MFC 20 weigh in results; Paul 'Semtex' Daley fails to make weight (again)

Electric welterweight Paul "Semtex" Daley last night failed to make weight for his fight against Nick "The Goat" Thompson at Maximum Fighting Championship (MFC) 20: "Destined for Greatness," coming in a half-pound over the 170-pound division limit.
It is the second time in as many fights that the English striker has had trouble on the scale -- he came in a whopping four pounds heavy for his bout against John Alessio in December 2008, which he won via technical knockout.
The fight will go on as planned; however, Daley will forfeit 25 percent of his fight purse to Thompson for the slip.
Here are the complete "Destined for Greatness" weigh-in results (via Sherdog.com):
Ryan Ford (171) vs. Pat Healy (169)
Antonio McKee (155) vs. Derrick Noble (155)
Paul Daley (171.5) vs. Nick Thompson (170)
Rory Singer (185.5) vs. Bryan Baker (182)
Roger Hollett (204) vs. David Heath (204)
Solomon Hutcherson (185.5) vs. David Mewborn (185)
Simon Marini (155) vs. Ryan Machan (155)
Alain Hernandez (155) vs. Evan Sanguin (153)
Donovan Foley (151) vs. Josh Russell (151)
Richard Symons (200) vs. Brad Zazulak (197)
Note fighters are allowed a one-pound allowance over the division limit.
In addition to the great match up between Daley and Thompson, two MFC titles will be on the line this evening. MFC welterweight champion Pat "Bam Bam" Healy will defend his title against Ryan "The Real Deal" Ford and lightweight champ Derrick Noble will defend his belt against Antonio McKee.
MFC 20 will air live on HDNet later tonight (Friday, Feb. 20) at 10 p.m. ET from the River Cree Resort and Casino in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

I dont give a crap if he makes weight in some crap organization….He is still one of my favorite fighters!
Nothing I would like to see more than 2 of my favorites Semtex vs. Alves!
SEmtex was always against going to the UFC, but I read an interview yesterday where he said he is finally ready, and wants to make the UFC his new home!

I didnt mean to condone not making weight because Its not very professional to not make weight, but I LOVE this kid!

It just doesn’t seem as bad when it is a non-title fight in a side show organization. We always give the fighters we like the benefit of the doubt, like for me I didn’t really mind when Wilson and Alves didn’t make weight. Now, if Alves doesn’t make weight for his title shot agaisn’t GSP, I will find it hard to ever be a fan again!

john i agree with ya it was 171.5 he miscalculated so what. maybe he is getting too big for the welterweight division. i mean he did fight at middleweight aswell so who knows.
alves will have problems making weight soon too

I have a big problem with not making weight even though i’ll be rooting for him. Especially when the commission is paid off to look away(EliteXC & Gina). But seriously how does a guy nicknamed after fainting goats stand a chance against legit KO power. This is gonna be ugly.

Semtex vs Alves is a fan boys dream. Definitely a match I’d like to see on my personal Fantasy Fight Card (if I ever made one). It’d be a stand-up clinic and I’d bet the house on Semtex. He’s a fast starter and much more explosive. Throws more combos, etc.

Lester: Its only 1/2 a pound for fucks sake.
I agree he needs to have it under control but its not really much is it.
He should have took a big shit and hopped back on there!
John: He is also a fave of mine and always exciting to watch. A promising career lies ahead for the man from Notts.

Yeah, I don’t have a huge problem missing by a half pound. Its when its more than one pound that it is egregious.

NO worries boys, I have a feeling that Semtex is headed to the UFC.
by john on Feb 20, 2009 12:55 PM EST up reply actions
Semtex falls into the same category as your boy Thiago….neither can make weight.

“crap organization”? Come on john, I understand that the MFC is no UFC (not by a long shot), but for a regional show, they are doing pretty good for themselves (I mean they have one of your favorite fighters on the card – I loved his fight against Shields btw, as I think Semtex was a couple punches/elbows away from putting Jake on queer street, although I still think his ground game is not up to UFC standards). I’m assuming that you have HDnet john and will be watching but I say check out the card tonight because I think it sets up some good fights with some recognizable names in the mix (at least for the hardcore). The guys running MFC seem to understand and be focused on their niche and are actually making money at it.
PS – Sorry man, don’t mean to nitpick but I just have to defend the home town MMA org.

YOU are actually right Canucklehead! My bad! I was just trying to justify one of my favorites not making weight. yOU are correct, this isnt a crap organization at all! My comment sounded like a typical UFC nuthugger noob comment and I am better than that! my bad, thanks for the correction!

Semtex would be a great addition to the UFC 170 lb. division, especially since their really starting to establish themselves in the UK….nees to make weight tho….

I think it’s disrespectful towards the opponent if a fighter doesn’t make weight. I think if this happens more than one time a fighter should get a huge fine…

He’s already sacrificing 25% of his purse. For these guys, smaller shows, that is substantial. And for the guys they are fighting, they’ll take it.

unless its gina carano. she can do anything she wants and ill still love her.
by Nokimono on Feb 20, 2009 10:04 AM EST up reply actions
And she has to get naked behind a towel to weigh in. Even better.

I wanna know when Fitch Fights next
It kinda blows that three of the top guys are best friends and prbably wont fight each other in Kos, Swick and Fitch, but has anyone heard what fitch is doing next?

Fitch is looking to fight Karo next, that is if Karo agrees to the fight.

Team Dagger is on the card? Hutcherson sucks….
by FukStyck on Feb 20, 2009 10:23 AM EST reply actions
Oh come on people, he was only 0.5 lbs over and some of you are commenting like he shot the Pope or something.
I agree that 4 lbs over is excessive. But to go from 4 lbs over to 0.5 lbs over shows progress and effort.
The truth is it might not even be his fault because guys at his level often rely on others to plan their diets, exercise and weight loss programs. That way they can focus on the most important part of training which is prepping your skills for the fight.
by Machine on Feb 20, 2009 10:31 AM EST reply actions
The article says 1/2 pound over but the weight says 171.5? Was he really 1.5 lbs over? Don’t they get time to take the weight off like in the UFC? Did he get that chance and still come in over?
by BeerMan on Feb 20, 2009 10:37 AM EST reply actions
Never mind. I see now.. The 1 pound over was allowed, but the extra 1/2 is the problem. I still want to know if he was allowed to try to take that 1/2 pound off?
by BeerMan on Feb 20, 2009 10:42 AM EST up reply actions
I was wondering the same thing. Canadian rules could be different.
by DDT on Feb 20, 2009 12:16 PM EST up reply actions
Hmmm, how did this happen? He’s not even a big WW. Half a pound is nothing though and it’s a smaller show. Strange though because he looks kind of small compared with some of the WW beasts in the UFC. I was under the impression that like Diego he walks around very close to 170. Still a fan, this is minor.

these so called CRAP shows give fighters a platform to start from. so screw u ufc nuthuggers.
by NEON on Feb 20, 2009 12:18 PM EST reply actions
omg finally someone who respects mma. if pisses me off when someone says a card sucks just because there isnt any big names or a title fight is not on the line. i for one enjoy exciting fights and like watching non-ufc shows.
by Jared on Feb 20, 2009 6:11 PM EST up reply actions
There is no way on earth a proffesional fighter should ever fail to make weight.
by Spyder on Feb 20, 2009 2:04 PM EST reply actions
Unless they take a fight on really short notice and come in a half pound over. Say if Kos weighed 171.5 against Alves no one would have complained.
by RobH86 on Feb 20, 2009 4:11 PM EST up reply actions
spyder your right. they do this for a living so they have to prepare there bodies and make weight. anything else just adds more critcism to the sport.
