Dan Henderson vs Michael Bisping UFC 100 fight confirmed

The rivalry between The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 9 coaches, Michael Bisping and Dan Henderson, will culminate at UFC 100 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on July 11.
UFC President Dana White today confirmed the long-rumored match up in an interview with Setanta.com. And he also revealed that with a win "The Count" would earn a title shot, which would "probably" take place in the United Kingdom later this year.
Bisping -- TUF 3 light heavyweight winner and current British UFC posterboy -- was always a clear choice for the position, considering TUF 9 will be themed, "U.S. vs. U.K." His role was bolstered following a unanimous decision victory over Chris Leben at UFC 89 in October 2008.
He has looked reborn since dropping down from 205 to 185 pounds, thrashing Jason Day at UFC 85: "Bedlam" and putting it on Charles McCarthy for the majority of the first round to earn a technical knockout win after "Chainsaw" could not answer the bell for the second frame.
This is without question the biggest fight of Bisping's career. Not only because it has title shot implications, but because Henderson is a crafty veteran who has competed against many of the best in the sport throughout his prestigious career.
Indeed, Henderson would be a huge feather in the Brit's cap and perhaps signal a changing of the guard in the 185-pound division.
Henderson earned his spot as coach with a hard-fought split decision win over Rich Franklin at UFC 93 just last month. He was a member of the United States Olympic Greco-Roman wrestling team in 1992 and 1996 and has competed all over the world both as an amateur in wrestling and as a professional in mixed martial arts.
"Hollywood" is the only the only fighter in the history of the sport to hold two titles in two weight classes concurrently in a major fight organization as he held the now defunct PRIDE’s 205 pound and 185 pound titles.
In short, he has a remarkable resume. But he has slowed down a bit since the end of 2005, finishing just one opponent (Wanderlei Silva) in his last nine fights. During that span he has won six of those contests.
The 185-pound tilt between Bisping and Henderson will be a featured bout on the historic pay-per-view (PPV) card alongside the welterweight championship showdown between Georges St. Pierre and Thiago Alves, which will likely receive top billing.
TUF 9 will feature a mix of lightweight and welterweight hopefuls competing for a "six figure" UFC contract in a tournament-style format. Production for the Spike TV mixed martial arts reality series is currently underway and is scheduled to debut on the network on April 1.

Bispings first REAL test and it will be a tough one for him for sure and I dont mean that to be derogatory I just think he has done better than people imagined he would in all of his fights so far (except for Rashad).
Im from England but I’ll be rooting for boy Hendo on this one.

my timeline prediction for bisping is coming into play perfectly! you regulars will remember me saying bisping will fight and lose to Anderson silva by the end of 2009! i also said (pre hend/franklin fight) that he’d go through one of them too!
by kevin on Feb 20, 2009 11:22 AM EST up reply actions
i think bisping is doing great but i think he will come up short on your prediciton, mostly because i think he will lose to hendo and after that the line gets long.you got hendo and nate trying for a rematch with silva and a couple others that may being erning there shot like wilson, damian, and there is still okami.
by roy on Feb 20, 2009 11:28 AM EST up reply actions
Well done Kev. So far so good but I think his journey stops with Hendo.
Plus I’d rather see Hendo have another go than Bisping. I dont think Bisping has anything to offer Anderson at the moment. One thing I will say is Bispings confidence will grow considerably if he manages to not only beat but finish Henderson in some way. I just don’t see it happening but this is MMA and as my Bodog betting account can verify, anything can and often does happen!
War Hendo!!
by Ca$z on Feb 20, 2009 11:31 AM EST up reply actions
Well, now we now the date that Bisping will lose his first MW fight.
I truely hope that Bisping does something, or better yet, does multiple things to truely piss off Hendo. Henderson has fought his friend Rampage, and then Anderson Silva where he did not feel like himself. Then he had a matchup with Pahlares (who hardly speaks English, if any) where he had to keep it standing. Then he fought Rich Franklin, who he had no animosity towards, just a lot of respect. I want Hendo to come into his fight with Bisping PISSED OFF and ready to take Bis’s head off, because he is much more than capable of doing so.
by ViolentMike on Feb 20, 2009 11:38 AM EST up reply actions
don’t think I’m saying Bisping will beat A.S.!!! But technically, Bisping’s strength is his striking. If he can stick and move, and A.S. comes in sick, untrained and on a bum leg, I give Bisping a good shot!

lol kevin, when a division is a thin as the UFC’s middleweight division, it’s not hard to predict that Bisping will obviously have to go through Franklin or Hendo.
Even saying Bisping would fight for the title in 2009 isn’t hard to figure out. Look at the division, who else would get a title shot other than Nate Marquardt??
But does this mean if Hendo beats Bisping, he gets his rematch? I sure hope so…
by Dredg XI on Feb 20, 2009 11:48 AM EST up reply actions
lol, I predicted it in june of last year. sorry you’re not impressed by my performance!!
by kevin on Feb 20, 2009 11:51 AM EST up reply actions
Bisping has been training since he was eight years old. He is more capable than most people give him credit. He hasn’t had a chance to really show case his talents and Hendo will be a good fight for him. I’m going to say Bisping but then he should fight the winner of Marquardt and Gouveia.
by Mr Potato on Feb 20, 2009 12:05 PM EST up reply actions
you’re right Dredg the MW division is thin and i think there is a significant difference in fighters abilities
example:
silva (above every 1) – Hendo/Franklin (better than any1 else at MW but both have been finished by silva)
and because they have been beat by silva they have to give shots to ppl that probably wouldnt get past Hendo/Franklin…. ppl like Leites and Cote
by ufcaddict on Feb 20, 2009 12:07 PM EST up reply actions
ppl always doubt Bisping…… a lot of ppl said he would get destroyed by Rashad, they said he was going to get beat by Day and knocked out by Leben but nothing like that has happened
now, when he fights Hendo, alot of ppl will say he will get beat, stopped, destroyed by Hendo but i reckon he is 1 of the very few ppl that could get a decision win over Hendo
by ufcaddict on Feb 20, 2009 12:13 PM EST up reply actions
The MW division is not thin. If anything its the LW division thats thin. The only true competitors at that division are Florian, Sherk, and maybe Diego now. (pardon if I overlooked any up and comers) Nobody else at the weight class stands out much now. Everyone says that the MW division is thin cause Anderson is on top and nobody can really hold water to him. There is more depth is the MW division than there is at LW or HW.

I told you guys MOnday that 3 fights are pretty much confirmed for UFC 100:

With the addition of Kang and the re-signing of The Crow, the MW Division is definately getting stronger.
I think if Kang or The Crow wins, one of them should fight the loser of Nate and Wilson. Probably the one with the most convincing win.
Either way, I see Kang challenging for the belt after a few fights. We all know he’s more than capable.

Cogito:
at least the LW division have a number 1 contender
thales leites got a shot for beating Mcfedries??? the marquardt fight he shouldnt have won… even with 2 points against marquardt he only won a split decision!!
and before that, cote!!! cote won almeida in a less than decisive way… and since when was almeida a contender at MW?? who had he beat in the ufc to get a chance to fight for the number 1 contender spot? rob yundt
its insane that you would compare MW to such a talent rich LW division…. sherk, griffin, edgar, ken flo, diego, stevenson
there are 5 names there that are close to a title shot and 1 contender
then you have the youthful up and comers; guida, huerta, griffin, tibau, diaz, lauzon, stephens, neer are all exciting prospects that are only going to get better
by ufcaddict on Feb 20, 2009 4:18 PM EST up reply actions
although i do agree with you that the HW division is thin… its in a state right now… not a great depth of talent…. probably the thinnest division in the ufc

It’s a tuff call for me as I’ve been a hendo fan for years but I’m from manchester so I want bisping to get the title shot…
but,..If I was betting I’d go with hendo
by DanP on Feb 20, 2009 1:45 PM EST up reply actions
Hendo hasn’t been the same since he left Pride. If he can keep Bisping on his back, he may be able to grind out a decision or possibly a TKO if Bisping gets caught by his ground-and-pound. However, I would give the stand-up striking advantage to Bisping, because his counters and footwork are much more technical than Hendo’s. So, as long as Bisping works on his takedown defence and can keep the fight standing for most of the rounds, he should be able to get a decision win. A TKO is not impossible, but I can’t see a veteran like Dan allowing that to happen, but we’ll see. Hendo is definitely passed his prime, but he’s still Top 10 and definitely the gatekeeper to the higher ranks for Bisping.
And Ca$z, you’re rooting for a yank? You traitor!

I will tell you all HENDERSON will absolutely destroy Michael Bisbing. If you watch the Leben-Bisbing fight, the one time Leben went for the takedown he got it with relative ease. Henderson is one of the strongest middleweights/light heavyweights. He hit bisbing with his huge right hand and either knock him out or preceed to ground and pound the shit out of bisbing. If bisbings chin holds up henderson will get the decision. If not Henderson will finally get another knockout. Michael Bisbing is going down July 11. And I will be chearing my ass off !

The UFC has been catering to Bisping in order to build their British fan base and plans to expand into Europe. Matt Hamill kicked his arse in England and in true UFC fashion, they awarded to the fight to the weaker Bisping. Since then, the UFC has been arranging fights that they felt Bisping could win.
But alas, now he has to fight Dan Henderson. He will then be known as the “10 Count” after he gets knocked out.

Yeah. If the UFC is using this as a plan to set up a title fight for him in the UK, they’re going to be sorely disappointed.
Dan can beat Bisping standing, and the wrestling/ground game is hands down Hendo’s…
Bisping WILL lose this fight.
Probably for the best anyways…I doubt Bisping wants to be KTFO’d by Anderson Silva in from of his home country.

ive always been a dan fan, but i think that his best days are behind him. if franklin hadnt been accidentally eye poked, hendo was on his way to losing that fight. at this point bisping is underrated by hardcore fans while dan is slightly overrated by hardcore fans. this is a very evenly matched fight. and the best part is that whoever wins and faces anderson will really deserve a title shot. not like leites or cote.
by COR on Feb 20, 2009 3:11 PM EST up reply actions
I am not that excited about this fight. Bisbing is going to fight a very technical fight and try to win on points, just like the Leben fight. Hendo just has to secure a few takedowns per round and get the UD. No exciting finish to this fight. Hendo by UD.
by BNF on Feb 20, 2009 11:13 AM EST reply actions
Everyone said the same when Dan fought Rich but he just wont let someone do that for to him for 3 rounds. He has a very good chin and Bisping does not have KO power so Dan will be willing to take shots from him to get on the inside and look for the TD.
Dont be surprised if Bisping gets his first GnP loss in this one.

Well I am predicting Hendo to win and would be very happy to see him finish Bisbing, but I don’t think it will happen. Bisbing is one of the best at getting back to his feet, so unless Hendo can KO him on the feet I think it will be 3 indentical rounds with Hendo getting the nod.

I can see Hendo out-wrestling him, and then a when the stand up exchange happens I see Hendo by LH Knock-out. But Bisping always has a great chance of winning any fight he takes. I hope Rampage and co. can help him tons to make make this a real kick-ass battle. Hendo by KO.

With all the talk about Couture / Cro-Cop possibly happening at UFC 99, I’m willing to go out on a limb and say that it will happen at 100. Randy’s in the middle o filming a movie and won’t sign the fight until he knows he can get a full camp in. The film is supposed to be finished filming in early May. That gives just enough time for a good 7 or 8 week camp. Couture / Cro-Cop was supposed to happen already, but it was derailed by a headkick from Gabriel Gonzaga. I can’t imagine 100 without Chuck and Randy. Perhaps they’ll even bring Tito back for this one.

We will find out how good Bisping really is. I can’t see Bisping being able to stick and move on Hendo like he did in his last fight? I would like to Hendo vs. A.Silva again I think Hendo ran out of steam the first fight because of the weight he had to drop from fighting at 205? After the Franklin fight(and Franklin is a great fighter). There would also be a possible Hendo vs WSilva after this and that would bring alot of excitment from their Pride day’s for the hardcore MMA fan. UFC 100 has alot of possibilties to make the greatest PPV ever. Hendo/Bisping, Evans(or Machida)/Evans, Alves/GSP. Why not add BJ/Kflo, and Machida(or Rampage) vs the winner of chuck and Sho Gun? I say f^ck the Couture vs Cro Cop fight as Cro Cop has done nothing to deserve to be on a card this big? I would rather see Couture vs Nog? another possible fighter is Forrest vs machida or Rampage? I’m starting to get to far in the future here and the one problem with putting on such a great card is the cards following will look sub par much like the cards following UFC’s year end PPV the cards following fan’s have been trashing because they were expecting the same.

As a englishman I’m ashamed we only have michael bisping as our sole high profile fighter. His fight against chris leben was a joke, sure he has good movement and fairly average punching but that aint gonna be enough against hendo.
He won’t KO bisping but I can see him getting the decision with the ground game Leben took bisping down too easy, against anyone else bisping would have been ground into dust.
It interesting to hear the conspiracy theroies, but I think if its true then maybe bisping against Silva is a possibilty in england. Hoping that he can hold it against silva (given Silva’s last too performances) its poss shoul it go too a decision bisping will win and he will become champion. I say this because in the uk we don’t have ufc on pay per view its on a sports channel. Should he win and become champion the UFC would have larger exposure in the UK thus UFC becoming more popluar in the UK and allow them to charge Pay Per View for every event rather than british only ones. But anderson will blow him away in the first round

Yeah this was one fight with an outcome that is not debatable at all. It also shows Bisping wasn’t able to be flexible in his style as necessary depending on the opponent, as the best of the greatest fighters are. He was clearly told by his corner to stop circling towards Henderson’s right hand, yet he just couldn’t help himself. It showed he’s not in the same league as Henderson.
