UFC Quick Quote: Randy Couture vs. Mirko Cro Cop in Germany a 'possibility'

"Possibility. I'm working on a movie this March, April and May. It depends when I finish the movie. If I can get a full camp in before the Germany [show] I'd love to fight Cro Cop. He's a huge star in Germany. But the question is whether I'll be able to get a full camp in."

-- Former heavyweight and light heavyweight champion Randy Couture tells MMAFix.com that he is interested in a fight against Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic when the promotion storms the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany, on June 13. However, "The Natural" warns that he may not have enough time to prepare because he will be on a movie set alongside action stars Jet Li, Jason Statham and Dolph Lundgren in Sylvester Stallone’s upcoming action flick "The Expendables." The timeline appears tight and it's unclear at this time when Couture would be obligated to make a decision so that the organization would have ample time to promote the match up. What's more, the second tour of duty for Filipovic -- the Pride FC 2006 Open Weight Grand Prix winner Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic (24-6-2) — is not even a done deal right now. The Croatian is also recovering from knee surgery following his technical knockout win over Hong Man Choi at Field’s Dynamite!! on New Year’s Eve. In short, the fight seems unlikely for June based on current circumstances, but that could change as the event approaches.

All i hear is the sound of Big Nog being ducked. Just my opinion though.

You mean being dropped by Frank

by rctrue on Feb 19, 2009 10:52 PM EST up reply actions

NNR: do you have any validity behind your claims that Randy is “ducking” Nog other than the fact that you are clearly a nog fan, look at the list of people Randy Couture has fought throughout his career. If there is one thing that is for sure its that, win or lose, there isnt a damn person out there that Captain America is ducking

I hope they do put randy up against nog. but thats up to dana. as 4 this matchup i see randy holding him in the clinch against the side of the cage and dirty boxing the sh!t out of him just like the gonzaga fight, with the GNP included.

There is nothing in life that would make me more happy then seeing A cro Cop left high kick against the side of Randy’s Jaw!

Greedy f***! Put the BS movie scripts down for half a second and come get your ass Kicked!

I never seen anyone successfully duck Nogueira like “Captain Cha Ching”!

by john on Feb 20, 2009 7:59 AM EST up reply actions

@NameNotRequired
2 years ago, when Randy was champ, he picked Gonzaga to beat CroCop, and tons of people accused him of picking GG because he was hoping to duck CroCop. Now, here we are, he is fighting CroCop, and you are accusing him of ducking Nog (who just got demolished by the way).

Nog is becoming a dinosaur (it seemed like he aged 5 years in that last fight against Mir), and unfortunately his best years weren’t in the UFC, so he doesn’t get the benefit of everyone remembering how great he was like Randy does. There is no up-side for Randy if he beats Nog.

by mikemick on Feb 20, 2009 9:03 AM EST up reply actions

I’ll try again.
Why would Randy be ducking Nog. John you really do need to watch Nog’s last two fights again and tell me what Randy has to be worried about. Sylvia was giving Nog a serious beatdown and would have beaten him if wasn’t always so scared to finish a fight and always look for a descision. And Mir who is not even known for his stand up was using Nog as a punching bag. How many bad performances will it take from Nog and Shogun for you to realise that they are both past their sell by date. You should be happy Nog is not fighting Randy because it will save you the embarrasment of making up an excuse for him when Randy beats him as bad as Mir did.

by Ade on Feb 20, 2009 11:34 AM EST up reply actions

Make that 3 fights Ade. His fight with Herring was also a less than impressive performance. Yes. Nog came back from a near decapitation by Heath to win the fight, but it was hardly a dominant performance. I chalked that fight up to a fluke, but after his perfomances against Tim and Mir, I am forced to think that Nog is not the same fighter he was in Pride. I still like Nog, and hope I am wrong, but I don’t see any reason for Randy to duck him. I think Randy would have to be the favorite for once in his life.

by naturalshadow on Feb 20, 2009 5:49 PM EST up reply actions

I’ve explained many times why i hold my beliefs of Couture ducking Nog. But in the end all one needs to see is the number of times he has turned out a fight with Nog or downplayed a meeting between the two dating back to 2000. Nog has publicaly called out Couture many times because he wanted to face him in the finals of KOK but couture got subbed while he won the tourney. Ever since Nog keeps saying couture but couture keeps avoiding such talk. I don’t care to try to understand his reasoning. All i can do is see his actions which seem clear.

by NameNotRequired on Feb 20, 2009 7:37 PM EST up reply actions

Sigh. Randy. You are a terrible actor. I understand that it makes you a great deal of money and that it is a lot less painful than MMA. But you will always have the opportunity to act. Your time as an MMA fighter is limited and nearing an ending. You will regret missing out on competing when your age finally catches up with you. Don’t waste this time acting. You have a more promising career in MMA broadcasting anyways.

by RyanHobbs on Feb 20, 2009 1:56 AM EST up reply actions

I disagree. He was offered a role with Stallone in a film that could do wonders for his acting career. If he were to turn down an offer like that, he wouldn’t be getting many more offers in the future. Also, he’s relevant in MMA right now. If he passes on a few movie roles, loses a couple of fights, why would studios be lining up to get him in a movie? (And I’m not saying he’s a good actor, or that he’s going to become the next “Rock,” but this was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up.

As for the people saying he’s “ducking” Big Nog. Congratulations, you’re the epitome of a keyboard warrior. Couture has been in some wars and has fought guys that weighed a lot more than he did. He’s trying to branch out into different things while STILL fighting. Show some respect.

by R-Dizzle on Feb 20, 2009 7:54 AM EST up reply actions

Is’nt he 46?!!!
I think Randy has put his time in guys. For pete’s sake, who cares if the guy makes bad movies or not. I seriously doubt that guys like A Silva, Liddell, and GSP will still be kicking tail at 46. I mean, that would be nice but I doubt it.

by naturalshadow on Feb 20, 2009 5:51 PM EST up reply actions

Fedor couldn’t submit Cro Cop, and u think Randy will? Don’t make me laugh – the only chance Randy has is L’n’P-ing Cro Cop for 15 minutes.

by jayshogun on Feb 19, 2009 10:27 PM EST up reply actions

Randy will finish him no problem. I see him taken him down and finishing with ground and pound. Randy will take a page out of Gonzaga. Watch for those elbows.

I hope Randy gets the old stink foot right to the face, and then wakes up and says " am I going to Disneyland"

by Bigmcmac on Feb 19, 2009 10:35 PM EST up reply actions

agreed bluepit, if kongo can get a gameplan to beat him i have no doubts randy’s will be even better.

by Buttcrack Obama bin Laden on Feb 19, 2009 11:47 PM EST up reply actions

Cro Cop isnt the same fighter as he was when he fought Fedor.

by rctrue on Feb 19, 2009 10:52 PM EST up reply actions

What do you mean the only chance Randy has? He will destroy CC in the first round just like GG did. CC is the one with only one chance and that is to land a left high kick before Randy dumps him on his head and pounds him out. Randy already beat GG who has every bit as deadly kicks as CC and a whole lot more. CC is a one trick pony and they are a thing of the past with the new well rounded breed of fighters. This will be a one sided beatdown.

by Gord on Feb 19, 2009 11:40 PM EST up reply actions

agreed Gord, randy will beat the croation out of cro-cop, he has no , i repeat no chance of getting out of the 2nd round, anybody who thinks otherwise is not a very educated mma fan, as for randy ducking nog, who i like alot , that is bull-shit to the highest degree, wtfu, coture has ducked no one in his career, never, hey NNR, what do you base your statment on? thats what i thought, nothing. some of the shit that gets put on here needs a stupid filter.

by daz on Feb 20, 2009 9:05 AM EST up reply actions

thats not even a possibility bro.. :)

by gaara on Feb 20, 2009 12:25 AM EST up reply actions

This is a terrible matchup for Cro cop. Cro Cop is not that great in the cage whereas Randy is great at utilizing it in the clinch. After he brutalizes Cro Cop in the clinch, his wrestling would be of use to bring it to the ground and pound Cro Cop out.

by RyanHobbs on Feb 20, 2009 1:58 AM EST up reply actions

It almost looks as if that picture happened by chance. Like Cro cop just happened to be in the back ground lol.

That is a dangerous fight for both fighters..

by Blades on Feb 19, 2009 10:02 PM EST reply actions

I agree this is a big name match-up, but won’t be much of a competition. 1 takedown and game over for Mirko.

by Ethan on Feb 19, 2009 10:14 PM EST reply actions

U are talking about Mirko Cro Cop right – the man many fighters failed to take down in Pride because of his footwork and TD defense? If Cro Cop prepares himself mentally for this fight, one can envisage Randy losing via KO or TKO. Cro Cop still has all the physical tools at his disposal, it’s just that ever since the Gonzaga KO he has not looked mentally like the same fighter that was once considered a top 3 HW. Whatever happens, it should be a great fight…

by jayshogun on Feb 19, 2009 10:25 PM EST up reply actions

GG owned him the whole fight, standing and on the ground. Believe me GG is WAY more of a dangerous opponent than CC.

by Gord on Feb 19, 2009 11:44 PM EST up reply actions

I agree Gord, Randy Handled Gonzaga and Cro cop had no chance in that fight. Besides those two fights were only 3 months apart so it shows where they both stand, imo.

by Jon on Feb 20, 2009 10:15 AM EST up reply actions

this will be not a dangerous fight for CC only for the Natural…even if CC is half as a beast he used to be…his LHK is more than enough to couture…very dangerous for him..

by gaara on Feb 19, 2009 10:23 PM EST reply actions

the reason ppl didnt take cro cop down was cus they were not randy the natural couture

And wrestlers in pride did take him down randleman, gonzaga in ufc, randy takes him down I see a gnp victory

great fight! Randy can’t have that big of a role in Sylvester’s movie and if he does it’s a shame cause i wanna see this happen at UFC 99 more than i wanna see Randy in a movie..

by RoB on Feb 19, 2009 10:36 PM EST reply actions

I really hope this fight doesn’t happen. At least right now. Both these fighters one of the greats. A lost for either one right now would be bad. If they do fight Randy wins TKO ground in pound in the third. Lets see Randy and Nog at UFC 100. I would be interested in Cro Cop fighting Kongo again. Just because of the disrespect Kongo had for him.

by Bluepit on Feb 19, 2009 10:37 PM EST reply actions

listen Randy is 45 he’s already made a good career and needs fights like this even if it would mean a loss.. and Cro Cop needs a fight like this too to show the fans what’s up!

by RoB on Feb 19, 2009 10:57 PM EST up reply actions

I think you need to go back and read my comment in full Rob. I don’t want this to happen cause I don’t want either one to lose. I suggest Randy fights Nog, and that would be more of a challenge than Cro Cop. And for Cro Cop to show people whats up, what better than to revenge his lost in fashion against Kongo who is a force to be reackoned with. After they both win that fight (if Randy wins) let them go at it.

by Bluepit on Feb 19, 2009 11:16 PM EST up reply actions

CC already lost to Kongo

by SoCalStunNa on Feb 19, 2009 11:23 PM EST up reply actions

ok i thought you just meant that a loss would be bad, not that you didn’t want either one of them to lose.. yep if you want CC to win, fighting Kongo is not the way to do it!

by RoB on Feb 19, 2009 11:39 PM EST up reply actions

So Cal I mentioned that the already fought. And Rob it is mma and they both could win or lose. It is what I would like to see. My opinion. But I strongly think CC would beat Kongo.

by Bluepit on Feb 20, 2009 12:29 AM EST up reply actions

a little soon dont you think if this fight goes down randy would have to fight a month later to be on the ufc 100

but i want cro cop to win, but randy still has it even in his old body couture by late stoppage or decision

by Jared on Feb 20, 2009 3:12 AM EST up reply actions

No I said to have randy and c.c not fight. I would rather see him fight at UFC 100 against NOG

Yea well randy dosent have much longer, seeing as how MATT MUELLER is eyeing a fight with him.
but seriously the rand/nog talk is lame man i hate nog.

this is a much cooler fight

very funny..i cant believe their really having it as an issue at BE..cool

by gaara on Feb 20, 2009 12:50 AM EST reply actions

randy all i have to say is your not that great of an actor so stop acting until your done fighting. your movies never make it to the theatre they are straight to dvd they suck just keep fighting your actually good at that and u are a huge draw and make millions just keep fighting and stop acting if u wanna continue your fighting career

by matt on Feb 20, 2009 1:12 AM EST reply actions

I think that this acting thing is a way for Randy to get some money back to retire. I think this is a stupid financial plan because acting and broadcasting could easily be Randys source of income upon retiring from MMA. The clock is ticking. Maybe MMA is too much for him nowadays and he needs more time to recover? He IS like 45.

by RyanHobbs on Feb 20, 2009 2:05 AM EST up reply actions

I don’t understand the appeal of having one guy trying to take it to the ground while the other tries to keep it standing. I’d rather watch CroCop fight the Iceman either at HW, LHW, or a “catch weight”.

by UFCAddict on Feb 20, 2009 1:29 AM EST reply actions

That sounds a lot more exciting.

by RyanHobbs on Feb 20, 2009 2:01 AM EST up reply actions

I think Randy has this fight anyway but, Cro Crop performs like he has in his last few fights then Randy will destroy him. Still fight I’d watch though.

Cro Cop by death stare!

by johnnybravo on Feb 20, 2009 3:15 AM EST reply actions

this is such bull shit to even offer randy this fight is a complete insult. cro cop has lost all credibility as a mixed martial artist because he is not he needs to go back to K-1.

cro cops last real win was to eddie sanchez (who the ufc cut i might add) back in 07 then after back to back losses he had the audasity to call out fedor for new years fight in japan then get owned by overeem you have got to be kidding me that this fight is even a possiblity what the hell is joe silva and CO thinking

randy just lost his title after two dominant performances over ganzaga and sylvia the only fight that makes sense for couture is against nogiera and the winner of that fight should get another title shot

What a f**king joke

by dia mette on Feb 20, 2009 3:36 AM EST reply actions

Dood. Listen. Everybody who is good in sports misses the attention when they’re out of the limelight. Then they wind up looking like an old fool if they try for too long.

And, as was said, your acting sucks. Pretty good ringside analyst, though. Stick with that. Peace out.

by TJ on Feb 20, 2009 3:52 AM EST reply actions

Randy, you’re too old and your acting skills are no good.

by TJ on Feb 20, 2009 4:11 AM EST reply actions

I figured it would be hard to come up with a Randy Couture fight I wouldn’t be interested in all that much but this matchup might fight that bill! If they fought inside the cage I doubt Randy would even need a full camp since it appears the metal is Cro Cop’s kryptonite.

by JTD on Feb 20, 2009 6:51 AM EST reply actions

CroCop is a better fighter than Randy and always has been.
Randy is overrated thanks to UFC’s hype, just look at the guy’s record.

Both in their prime, CroCop wins easily.
But Randy ages much better then Mirko, his fight against Lesnar wasnt as bad as Mirkos fight against Overeem so a fight today id say its 50/50.

by Lester the Pimp on Feb 20, 2009 7:12 AM EST reply actions

Well it seems like an interesting fight Im just not sure Randy is interested in fighting anymore…I dont get!, fighters are so picky these days!

by Hispanic Panic on Feb 20, 2009 8:48 AM EST reply actions

by E. Fairway on Feb 20, 2009 9:41 AM EST reply actions

i may be the only one, but i think this is a bad match up for randy, randy can probably beat 95 percent of the people that beat cro cop, but i think this is a dangerous fight for him. maybe i am alone on this.

by jim jeffries on Feb 20, 2009 10:21 AM EST reply actions

CroCop I guess is officially ducking a rematch with Overeem now?

by Belisarius on Feb 20, 2009 10:27 AM EST reply actions

If you could choose between Overeem in Japan or Affliction or Strikeforce or wherever, or Randy Couture in the UFC as a comeback fight, who would you pick?

And since Overeem is apparently in talks with the UFC, well…that’s a stupid statement.

Overeem was invited to fight Cro Cop in his cage on TV.

by stevo on Feb 20, 2009 11:47 AM EST reply actions

I was so excited when CC first came to the UFC. I’ve never been more disappointed. He didn’t look very good in the fight he won and looked terrible in the two he lost. If the old CC doesn’t show up, Randy will clinch and dirty box, then get the take down and gnp his way to a win. The only chance CC has is to land a clean kick to Randy’s head.

by brac on Feb 20, 2009 11:47 AM EST reply actions

good style match up – would be interesting

by Rusty Springs on Feb 20, 2009 12:30 PM EST reply actions

I don’t see Cro Cop winning this. This is a terrible comeback fight for him.
Randy is gonna work him up against the cage in the clinch and dirty box his way to a sweep, where he’ll work his way to full mount or hurt CC from the guard.
I’d rather see Cro Cop come in and fight another striker like Hardonk or Carwin or even a wrestler-turned-striker in Valasquez. After that, a revenge fight with Gonzaga or Kongo, and then on to the big fights with the likes of Couture, Mir etc.
Actually, a rematch with Nog for his first fight back would be even better.

by Hero-Of-Time on Feb 20, 2009 3:01 PM EST reply actions

ive read all these comments, you guys have no idea who mirko cro cop is, just because he lost two fights that doesnt mean he is done. as far as randy couture ill tell you rite now cro cop will knock him out in first round. and not by a leg kick but by his left arm. cro cop has the most powerful punch in mma he hits way harder then fedor and fedor knows that. but i hiope this fight happens and we will see who cro cop really is. cuz everybody is underestimating him but we will see. and if he wins this one his next will be nogeira.
