Coming into this fight I was a fan of both gsp and bj but after what I’ve seen, I have lost some respect for gsp. No doubt gsp is a great athelete and trains hard for his fights but what went on was not right at all. He definitely had an advantage and it was not right of him to do and if other fighters have even confirmed that he has greased up in the past then I believe he should be punished for it. I really wish there can be a 3rd fight between them just to settle this because it just wasn’t fair to bj.

The problem is that there are actually two issues here— 1) did he cheat? Answer— yes—vaseline was clearly applied to areas other than his face. (did he know about it or do it on purpose? who knows, but I’m willing to concede that George didn’t do it on purpose.)

2nd issue— Did it impact the outcome of the fight? I don’t think so— I saw George trainning for the fight of his life with upper echlon mma fighters. However I don’t practice jiu jitsu so I don’t know how much of a difference it makes in a fight.

I think it’s fair to say that both fighters have tarnished themselves over this.

For GSP to feign ignorance seems a bit far-fetched, not to mention totally unecessary given his superior overall skill set. From now on he’s going to be watched like no other fighter, so if it was the reason for his victories (as other previous opponents have inferred) he’s going to be found out now.

For BJ nothing turns people off like a sore loser. If he felt GSP was greasy the first time (this also goes for Matt Hughes) and had been told the same by other fighters then he should have raised it with the rules commission BEFORE THE FIGHT. At the very least he should have done so in between rounds! As for those who consistently try to defend BJ, I’d like to say he’s not whiter than white. Although legal (how?!) he’s worn knee supports in the past, useful (particularly against sweat/grease!) for grip if you’ve got great submissions off your back! He also (accidentally) poked GSP in the eye in the first fight which considerably disadvantaged GSP. Finally, his initial reaction to losing was to say he was retiring. If you’d felt the reason for your loss was because of someone elses cheating that wouldn’t be your reaction. As for him not having created the video, it’s posted on his official site and if he’s not supportive of it he could always delete it….

Best thing Dana White can do for us fans is have them both go on a winning streak then have a 3rd match, shown free-to-air.

1) BJ continues to bring this up over and over and over. Everyone knows already BJ…let the investigation happen.

2) BJ does has yet to admit he lost a fight to a superior fighter.

Punches were mainly to the side of the head, not the back. Shiney? BJ looked just as “shiney” before each round began. I believe it is what we like to call sweat. I say again any vaseline that is allowed on any part of the body will be transferred to other parts. Vaseline in the octagon at all is what should be banned, then there will be no future controversy regarding grease.

If you actually watch the fight, you will see that when BJ goes to rubber guard, there is so much friction that GSP’s back actually wrinkles from BJ’s calf rubbing against him…this wouldn’t happen if there was a lot of Vaseline. After the initial rubber guard, BJ doesn’t even get his leg over GSP’s shoulder, so I don’t understand people saying that GSP was slippery…watch the fight again. The fact that his skin wrinkles shows that there was a lot of friction, and he was not slippery.

Well…as a fan of neither fighter I have to say that the only nuthuggers on this site are Georges St. Pierre fans. You guys are worse than BJ Penn fans. I’m a GSP fan… I was rooting for him because I just thought BJ was too cocky… plus I just started watching UFC and I just didn’t really know BJ Penn except for the UFC PrimeTime special…

but after watching that video, I could see where BJ Penn could not get a high guard and control GSP because he was so slippery. I’ve done some BJJ myself, and I could see what BJ was trying to do and shoulda been able to do. And I think if they had rash guards on, as GSP had suggested, BJ Penn might’ve been able to work better and possibly submit GSP.

Of course, being such a smaller guy, BJ Penn woulda lost anyway.

Here’s what I know…And by the way I agree with hello, would like to see the fight again, and feel very confident it would end the same way.
1. There are too sides to every story and in a court of law there’s the prosicutions side and the defenses side, one side usually sounds good until you hear the others side.
2. I personally find this video laughable and very transparent, with there close up shots, editing and music they could make the pope look like a pervert.
3. Phil nurse is a complete moron I personally wouldn’t mind if they banned him from any future UFC events, he tainted or ruined ufc 94’s main event and hurt boths bj’s and gsp’s fan base, as far as if he did it intentially there is no proof to this, he might have or it might just have been a stupid mistake, I believe the later. 4. Gsp the cheater- what proof is there of this? Has he ever being tested positive for steriods..no. Can you proof he asked phil nurse to put vas on his body…no. 5. The fight should be ruled a no contest- Sherk was caught using steriods and lost his belt and they didn’t over turn his win, neither will gsp’s.

7. The NSAC said “this was definitely unfair to mr.penn”, he also said “It was unfair to mr.St.Pierre as it will tarnish an other wise very impressive victory.”

I’ve seen the fight several times and find it very hard to believe penn would have won if the little amount of vas wasn’t applied, I think it only made a difference with the high guard(which they played ad nausem on the video) were penns legs were slipping down. Penn has never submitted anyone in an MMA fight from his guard and gsp is a powerful bjj blackbelt much stronger than penn, give me a break.
9. It seems only overly emotional penn fans think the vas made a difference in the outcome(obviously the owner of the video did, and if penn didn’t feel it had such an effect he wouldn’t have allowed it on his site), pretty much everything I’ve ever read from articles on the fight at every sight I go to, top pound for pound fighter list, the conscenses is they didn’t feel the vas affected the out come of the fight.
10. They repeat the hit to the back of the head over and over again, grabbing the shorts which made no difference as gsp couldn’t get the take down, how since gsp has vas on his shoulders, penn couldn’t get the hight guard, but I guarantee if there was a pro gsp video you would see over a dozen things(without replaying them over and over) thats had nothing to do with vas on gsp upper back and shoulders that gsp owned penn at. Just watch the ENTIRE fight for god’s sake with an unbiased look at it. If the exact opposite happened, penns corner men rubbed a little vas on penn and penn destroyed gsp, and gsp had all these videos on his website as to how the vas was the only reason he lost, I would think gsp was not only the inferior fighter but a douche bag as well and thats my honest opinion.

Alright…If GSP cheated, and I believe he did(intentionally or not), then we were all robbed. This fight was billed as the biggest fight in UFC history. It didn’t live up to the hype. If extra Vaseline on GSP’s back is what caused this, then f*ck him for robbing us. As big a fan as I am of BJ, I didn’t care too much about the ultimate outcome.

GSP is the most well rounded fighter in the world. He is probably the most athletic and genetically gifted fighter as well. Numerous fighters, way back to Jason Miller, have said that he has felt greasy, and other fighters in Jackson’s camp has been acused of it as well. GSP would have won this fight anyway. But maybe if he wasn’t slick, we could have seen a more competitive battle.

I’m not going to say that GSP is a cheater. I will say this however: GSP is a listener. He does exactly what his coaches and trainers tell him to do. If Greg Jackson told GSP to grease, then GSP greased. If GSP wasn’t told to grease, then GSP’s cornerman was. GSP is going to do what he’s told to do, no questions asked. He’s not a hard guy to convince.

BJ has said before that he can’t stand cheaters. He called Sherk on the roids, and now he’s calling GSP on the grease. Noone said anything too loudly about GSP greasing before, but maybe its because noone wants to be the guy accusing someone of it, or “making an excuse”. Maybe BJ isn’t making an excuse. If you actually watch the fight, you will see that when BJ goes to rubber guard, there is so much friction that GSP’s back actually wrinkles from BJ’s calf rubbing against him…this wouldn’t happen if there was a lot of Vaseline. The NSAC official is with the fighter in the locker room when getting his hands taped and leading up to his entrance; walks side-by-side with the fighter to the ring and stands next to him before the fight begins; is in the ring during each round intermission; and follows the fighter back to the locker room when the fight is completed.

If a fighter is allowed to be greased up in the manner that Phil Nurse allegedly greased Georges St. Pierre, the NSAC is largely to blame for letting it happen. What is the point of having an NSAC official assigned the fighter and his trainers if he is not watching for infractions and rules violations.

In the past few days, several of St. Pierre’s past opponents have voiced their feelings about GSP being "greasy" while they fought him as well. If this truly has been going on as a repeated offense for St. Pierre, how have we gotten to this point without it being noticed by the NSAC or any other commission?

It is extremly difficult in an MMA setting, especially in the UFC setup, to intentionally grease up a fighter and get away with it. In fact, it should be extremely difficult to unintentionally grease a fighter and get away with it.

Perhaps the NSAC should look into getting some capable and competent officials to prevent issues like this from even being possible in the future."

If a guy “baths” in baby oil the night before etc etc all they have to do is put the guy in a steam room and if he’s as oily as a pig he’s busted. To be fair to Penn, I think that a fighter’s corner needs to be more careful. I do not disagree that Nurse probably had a scintilla of vasoline on his finger.
