There is a great possibility that I will be fighting for the UFC in Cologne, Germany. I dont know my opponent yet. But Im very confident that well come to an agreement with the UFC and that Ill fight for them in June. There are other offers on the table also.
Interviewer: Do you have any idea as to who youll face?
Ive heard that I could be facing Randy Couture. That would a great. Then again its not up to me or him but management so well have to wait and see. But Im sure hed also be interested in that fight.

UFC 99:
B.J. Penn vs. Kenny Florian
Wanderlei Silva vs. Rich Franklin
Mirko CroCop vs. TBA (possibly couture)
Caol Uno vs. Spencer Fisher
international UFC cards are usually weak…. Why is the UFC treating Germany so well?
by john on Feb 19, 2009 11:20 AM EST up reply actions
cuz in the U.K. they know they will be there often so they don’t have to stack the cards. Germany won’t get 6 shows a year or anything so they gotta make it good and get ppl interested. I’d expect this one this year, one next year, maybe two the year after that. Too many other cities and countries to visit on mainland Europe.
by Crowls on Feb 19, 2009 11:51 AM EST up reply actions
they’re treating Germany so well, b/c they know i’ll be going to see this event! me and a couple of friends are going to take the train from Sweden down to Germany for sure! can’t miss out on an oppurtunity like this..

I’ve been meaning to say for quite a while that UFC 100 will have a tough time topping UFC 99! It’s shaping up quite nicely.

Yo JOHN – to add to your Couture/Crocop news, there is a MMAFix interview of Couture where he states that he will fight Crocop in Germany if he finishes filming some movie in time to get a full camp in. He also states that if Lesnar loses, he definitely wants a rematch.

That’s the guy that was on TUF, Elliot marshall. Nate is a freaking huge middleweight.
by James S on Feb 19, 2009 10:45 AM EST up reply actions
that was my thought, he is GIGANTIC. He’s bigger than Rashad and he doesn’t even have a fight coming up.
by Crowls on Feb 19, 2009 11:54 AM EST up reply actions
Holy Crap he is huge! He looks like he easily has 10 to 15 pounds of muscle on Evans. It would be interesting to see what kind of cut he makes to fight at 185.

My boy Nate is a BEAST !!!!!!
by Rashad-Marquardt-GSP-Sherk on Feb 19, 2009 11:38 AM EST up reply actions
Yeah looks bigger than Rashad. Shows how good Rashad is, he could clearly make 185.
by Nick J on Feb 19, 2009 12:06 PM EST up reply actions
I wonder what Nate feels like knowing he is actually bigger and weighs more than the light heavyweight champ but still has to cut to a middle weight to be a contender.

I got a serious question for you guys!! I’m down under 200 pounds, been working out 4 days a week, been taking NO explode and love it. goal of 180 by june! What would you recommend and why? Axis HT or episthane??? thanks guys!!
by kevin on Feb 19, 2009 11:08 AM EST up reply actions
Kevin: I am in the same boat as you. my normal weight was about 208 lbs. HOwever, I plan on taking my 1st amateur fight at 185 lbs in May, so I have been dropping weight. Right now I am down to about 197 lbs. Everyone is different, but For me, losing the weight is all about diet (which sucks). I literally eat NOTHING but Grilled Chicken and a salad (oil and Vinegar dressing) 6 days a week, sometimes twice a day! Friday, is the day I treat myself well and Pig out… (I have to keep my sanity). I also Only allow myself to go out drink and party on fridays. I was pretty muscular at 208 lbs, so I am trying to lose the weight while retaining as much of my muscles as possible
I paid attention to all your praises about NO Explode and I ordered me some, but have yet to recieve it!
by john on Feb 19, 2009 11:25 AM EST up reply actions
I always eat pretty good, just been lazy for years! I lose weight quick (around 12 pounds in a month). Now I want to tone. I don’t drink, and actually enjoy my veggies. I feel more energy now that I’m active, and have seen my “man boobs” disappear already! Now I want to tone! I’m a little older than you John, so it’s tougher, looking for that “edge.” my boss said axis is awesome, and epistane isn’t. I saw epistane sold online and the web site sponsors sherk and alves…enough said!
by kevin on Feb 19, 2009 11:48 AM EST up reply actions
by the way, I’ve been as big as 218 (not as tall as you John), but normally 208-210. now, 195ish!
by kevin on Feb 19, 2009 11:48 AM EST up reply actions
i’m 6’0" and at my biggest was 239. now i’ve been cutting weight and bulking i’m down to 190, but i think i’ll drop a few pounds then be bulked back up to 200 or so just in a different fashion. doing the hard training is tough right now because i’m only 1 month out from knee surgery so all i can do is bag work and upper body weights really. sucks but soon i’ll be back to jits 10 hours a week :) looking forward to those days again.

John, didn’t know you trained mate?
Be carefull when it comes to wanting to retain muscle size and still loose weight/cut. If you have been weight training using last set max (you know 10, 8, 8, 6 reps increasing weight each time) or another tear and repair method you will be carrying weight in your muscles (mainly water) but not neccessarily strength.
Obviously in mma strength is more important than muscle size. Try changing your workouts to all body ones doing small heavy sets daily on the same muscle groups. Not work to exhaustion then rest that muscle for 4-5 days as is the norm.
This is more of a power lifters workout where you don’t look to grow (or retain) muscle but keep strength.
Changing my workouts has alowed me to stay the same weight and lift much more on the key workouts for MMA, being squats, bench and deadlifts.
I weigh (in US terms) 172lbs there or there abouts but cut to 155 for amateur comps.

Nick…is there a specific program your on ie.how do you group muscle workouts on a 5-6 day workout program
For example…lets say your working chest and bi’s one day…how long would you wait to go back to those muscle groups?? I wait 3-4 days before I work those specific muscles again but I’ll change it to chest/tri’s so that I’m not repeating the process over and over. Also, what are you taking pre/post workout?
by McArthur on Feb 19, 2009 12:45 PM EST up reply actions
Alright John, i have had 6 amateur bouts, going 5-1. Have toyed with the idea of having a pro fight but have got too much to loose really but you never know.
Whats the rules system for your org?
PS I’m not gonna be on my computer for a while so give me a run down and i’ll respond as and when i can mate.
by Nick J on Feb 19, 2009 12:46 PM EST up reply actions
Mc, sorry but gotta be brief as am going (could go on for ever on this sub)…
For strength i do a full upper body one day and lower the next and alternate. Only 1, possibly 2 excercise per muscle group, 1 set. Don’t work till you can’t move like what is common, just blitz it heavy weights for one set and return to that excercise 2 days later.
I promise your strenth will go through the roof. Or worked for me at least!!
Creatine, protein and oats mixed together both before and after.

for some good workouts for mma type of fitness check out crossfit.com. those work outs are redonkulous. i normally try to get that and my weights in daily, well as much as i can with the knee, and then jitsu when i am back to training.

I love listening to you guys on training, way different than what I hear, as a marathon runner and long course triathlete, I have “ballooned” up to 150lbs at 5’ 11" during the of season , 20 minutes on the bike for cardio, i’m not laughing at you guys because I am allergic to weights except legs for cycling, but 20 minutes hard is just a couple of pace lines at top end during the 4 or 5 hour jaunt. hahahahahahahahaa
by The Slovak on Feb 20, 2009 9:54 AM EST up reply actions
Kevin, cycle off NO here and there…another good pre-workout product is called EXPAND (with or without caffine)….the NO will have less and less of an effect after 8-10 weeks…I’m on Xpand one week then back to NO for next and neither has diminished for alomost 4 months, 5 days (plus 1 hockey game) a week…if your wanting to lose weight BEFORE you gain it back in muscle (which is what I did)a grerat post workout is called ELITE 12…it tastes great low on cards high on protein and will repair tissue as well…once you hit your target weight then hit the Axis HT or episthane
by McArthur on Feb 19, 2009 11:29 AM EST up reply actions
Kev, that Elite 12 is made by DYMATIZE nutition and is great stuff for LEAN mass…I also add 2 teaspoons of U-Days oil y=to that to for a little added protein and muscle repair

Hey I noticed you all seem pretty knowledgeable on how to cut weight and get in shape. I would like some free advice. Here is my situation. I’m 30 yrs old, 5’9" tall and weigh in at a whopping 256lbs. Yeah, sounds really fat I know but the thing is I’m not that fat. I’ve been in the military (US Army) for over 12 years now so I’m in reasonably good shape for a guy this big. I do well in my PT test doing on average 72 push ups 60 sit ups in two minutes and running my 2mile run between 1430 and 1500 normally. I do have a bit of a gut that I can’t seem to get rid of but I’m really big framed so it’s not as noticeable. I was wondering if you guys have advice on how to lose weight and tone up. I’m currently doing about an hour of cardio (mainly mountain biking outdoors and elliptical) 4 days a week. I’m also doing medium intensity weight lifting 4 days a week at 3 sets of 15 reps. I’m not seeing much in gains. I’m not slimming down in the least, if anything I’m getting bigger. I do this every time I lift. I’m not currently taking any kind of supplements and prefer not to outside my vitamin pack from GNC. Any advice would be much appreciated.
by Chief on Feb 19, 2009 12:04 PM EST up reply actions
the best way to lose a gut is to grow your core….sounds like you got enough cardio on the go but follow it up immediately with core strengthening for 30 minutes minimum…a lot of good programs on the web…cardio alone won’t make the gut go away anytime fast…also try and avoid easy core excercises like sit ups as they will take their toll on your back…core includes abs, obliques and lower back…be patient too as it’ll take a while

Hmm don’t know Mcarthur, i would recomend cutting unesseccary carbs for chief.
Carbs are essential for muscle repair and energy but if not being used they can easily be cut out to avoid fat retention.
Say as of 8pm, no carbs what so ever. Usually helps and when summers coming up and i wanna cut up a bit for vanity reasons that is the simple tweak i use.
by Nick J on Feb 19, 2009 12:28 PM EST up reply actions
thats a good call too Nick…for me carbs are fine I don’t need to count them but for someone that is just starting to “get into shape” thats prob the best idea…realistically though, everyone reacts differently to different methods and a specified combo of all the above would probably make the most sense…one thing for sure, there is NO easy way
by McArthur on Feb 19, 2009 12:35 PM EST up reply actions
Ha ha, agreed mate there is no quick fix or easy way.
Your completly right different methods work for different people. Its just a case of trial and error really.
The thing is with bodybuilding/gym work is everyone has an opinion. Its just a case of taking little ideas off everyone and adapting them to the individual and seeing what works.
by Nick J on Feb 19, 2009 12:43 PM EST up reply actions
agreed…notice a couple questions I picked your brain about a couple of posts up ^^
by McArthur on Feb 19, 2009 12:47 PM EST up reply actions
In response to Chief, there’s no getting away from it but diet is key. High intensity interval training is the best exercise. Have a look on Wikipedia, they’re not even sure why it’s better than long cardio sessions but they believe it may increase the resting metabolic rate.
by RobH86 on Feb 19, 2009 12:59 PM EST up reply actions
intervals will kill ya but rob is right. they def work
by McArthur on Feb 19, 2009 1:02 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah McArthur they’re sick. If you push it too hard you you’ll feel like getting sick and fainting. Generally it’s hard to just jump into HIIT but I swear if you’re half fit this type of training will make you very fit in no time. I might start back at it but I dread it.
Find a really steep hill and do sprints. That’s a pretty sick type of HIIT. I have pushed it too far a couple of times.
by RobH86 on Feb 19, 2009 1:09 PM EST up reply actions
true….motivation is the most difficult part of the whole thing
by McArthur on Feb 19, 2009 1:21 PM EST up reply actions
Thanks guys all great advice. I’m not sure how bad my diet is. I do all the cooking in my house usually and I normally eat chicken and fish. I usually have pork and beef once a week. I eat lots of veggies so that’s not a problem. I don’t really watch carbs or protein or anything but I make sure I eat only about 2200 calories a day. I just got back from my 2nd tour in Iraq and I’m taking until Jun 1 off to just relax and get in shape. I’ll try to incorporate all the advice I’ve been given. I do appreciate the advice.

by McArthur on Feb 19, 2009 2:07 PM EST up reply actions
Diet is the biggest part. If you follow multiple small meals a day you will lose weight. Chicken, Fish, turkey are good proteins. Combine it with vegetables and good carbs.

Haha, i think you are speaking more out of hatred for the Jackson camp rather than as an objective fan, though i do think you are right that Rampage is literally gonna beat jardine AND rashad, but i think Nate will beat gouveia
by Dave on Feb 19, 2009 10:54 AM EST up reply actions
IM with you BNF! Wilson is going to KO Nate, and Rampage is going to run through Jardine (easily)…rashad wil put up a agood fight against Page, but Shads chin wont hold up past the 3rd round!
by john on Feb 19, 2009 11:09 AM EST up reply actions
No doubt… Rashad is going to lose whether it is Rampage or Machida, Jardine is being brought in to lose and 09 is Wilson’s year. Wilson’s hits hard and the last time Marquardt got hit hard he crumbled under the pressure. Plus, I just think Team Jackson is riding too high and with the controversy surrounding them now I believe thier time is up!
by BNF on Feb 19, 2009 11:15 AM EST up reply actions
Yeah i agree on the Wilson Nate fight. Wilson is massivly underatted.
His BJJ coach said he is the most talented fighter out of ATT, now thats saying something.
Also on the same show (countdown) Wilson said very very acurately that Nate is good at everything but he isn’t great at anything.
So true.

Haha again john me and you disagree on an outcome, I dont think anyone not named anderson silva can knock out nate the great, and as heavy handed as gouveia is, i dont see him knocking out nate, and despite being awesome at jiu jitsu i dont see him subbing nate either, i see nate pulling out a late tko, or pretty decisive decision, but im sure me and you will agree on something one of these days
by Dave on Feb 19, 2009 11:35 AM EST up reply actions
Nick J, I remeber that, and Rogan mentioned Wilson’s coaches said the same thing before the J-Mac fight, but he just needed to do the work. I think he sees a title shot on the horizon and this has put the spark under his a$$. He is finally getting some recognition, like the countdown show and being the featued fight. If he did the work this fight is his to lose IMO.
