Manny Gamburyan headed to WEC featherweight division

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 5 finalist Manny Gamburyan is about to go on a diet, agreeing to drop 10 pounds and compete in the World Extreme Cagefighting banner (WEC) after suffering back-to-back losses inside the Octagon, according to MMAWeekly.com.
"Pitbull" recently dropped a unanimous decision to Thiago Tavares at UFC 94: "St. Pierre vs. Penn 2" on Jan. 31. He was attempting to get back in the win column after Rob Emerson pasted him with a 12-second knockout at UFC 87: "Seek and Destroy" back in August 2008.
It didn’t happen.
Since losing to Nate Diaz in the finals of the 16-man lightweight tournament at the TUF 5 Finale back in June 2007, Gamburyan put together impressive back-to-back submission wins. He just bout took Nate Mohr’s ankle home with him at UFC 79: "Nemesis" and he choked out Jeff Cox his last time out at UFC Fight Night 13 in April.
Both fights lasted less than four minutes combined.
He’ll look to establish similar success early on in his career with the UFC's sister promotion. But it won’t be easy with guys like Mike Brown, Leonard Garcia, Urijah Faber, Wagnney Fabiano and Jose Aldo, among others, floating around.
No potential date or opponent for Gamburyan’s WEC debut is known at this time. But according to the report he expects something to happen no later than this summer.

Manny is a goof…most classless act I’ve witnessed was when (forget who he was fighting) he faked a hand shake at the opening of a rnd only to throw a punch catching whoever it was off guard

F off Manny!
something has been on my mind for a while now, and I would like to hear all the Maniacs takes on it!
I am getting a little tired of weight cutting! Some people like wrestlers who have been doing it their entire lives are better at it than say a ju jitsu fighter from Brazil. its kind of not an even playing field!
Do you guys like the weight cutting part of the sport, or would you guys prefer the weigh ins being an hour before the fight, so when the actual fight starts, we are ensured that the 2 fighters actually weigh close to the same weight?
Another question: Do BOxers also Cut weight? Or is it just mma because there is such a wrestling background in the sport?

de la hoya cut hard to make weight for pacquiao, but think about it as well yeah thats an advantage for wrestlers but theres other advantages for other guys as well

This is a perfect move for Manny. I think ge will accell at a lower weight class. Can’t wait to see him compete in the WEC.

john… I think any competitive sport that is governed by weight class people cut to get an advantage. In jiujitsu they often fight by belt ranking but they also break up the ranks by weight in the larger tourneys. For example, in NAGA they do an experience category and a weight catagory… so if you weight 145 you fight a 145 with your exp. So I think everyone is expoed to it. I don’t think wrestlers are better at it for any other reason than they are used to being hungry…

I am pretty sure this was a case of drop the weight and fight in the WEC or find a new job.

I actually like the idea of weight cutting but i hate the fact that people suck at doing it. The US has it on lock because of the wrestling pedigree of US fighters in general- which is why all bjj guys, european guys and especially japanese fighters suck at it. They think it’s a matter of how long you can sit in a sauna.

JOHN, I’m a former wrestler and assistant high school wrestling coach(when I have time). Cutting weight is a whole different sport in addition to the sport itself. In many ways it makes wrestlers even tougher than the sport of wrestling would make them otherwise, (if that makes sense to u all) most of the time wrestlers have to compete the same day they make weight and often times the 2nd day with a 1 lb allowance in a 2 day tournament. YES, they do get more efficient at it, but to tell u the truth, it’s the nature of the sport of wrestling that makes wrestlers so determined to do what other athletes won’t or can’t. SPOONER1234, makes a great point. Also, GSP and other MMA fighers come from a non-wrestling background and they have no problem cutting weight, so I think it’s the sport of weight classes that breeds that mentality even though wrestlers were among the 1st MMA fighters to do so, dilligently & strategically.

MANIA! I thought he was the ANVIL… Manvil the Anvil Gamburyan? Did he steal Thiago Alves nickname or am I wrong?
by Sp00ner1234 on Feb 19, 2009 10:16 AM EST up reply actions
His approved nickname is Manny “British Prostitute” Gamburyan. If Bruce Buffer introduces himas anything else, he is mistaken.

This is a good move, there are some good fights for him at 145. I’m excited to see him on a WEC card. He was just too small for 155ers in the UFC.
by ---Caesar--- on Feb 19, 2009 2:46 PM EST up reply actions
Good…now he can get owned at 145 and won’t take up room on our PPV cards :)
by BigFatManiac on Feb 19, 2009 9:28 AM EST reply actions
Amen to that. He will get schooled in the 145 in WEC. There are some top notch guys in that division.

I hate this guy, not that I ever had respect for hime anyways, but when he threw an abdominal kick to his opponent that was touching gloves really made me mad. All I wanted for that entire fight was for him to break a limb. Whats with him and Karo, I know they are cousins, they think they are so fuckin cool.
by yoububg on Feb 19, 2009 9:44 AM EST reply actions
A lot of hate for Manny going on
Always thought he was pretty cool. Maybe cause he was alwyas the underdog
Still, think he’s a good add to the 145ers
Give him Jens as a welcome to see where he stands
by IrishKev on Feb 19, 2009 9:47 AM EST reply actions
Jens would knock him silly so it sounds good to me
by McArthur on Feb 19, 2009 9:48 AM EST up reply actions
that would be a good fite, plus i think it would be the first time a guy from TUF faced one of his coaches from the show unless im mistaken.
by bobby oshea on Feb 19, 2009 10:09 AM EST up reply actions
I think Manny would kill Jens! Jens is done! Manny would take him down and G&P him for as long as he wanted.
by ---Caesar--- on Feb 19, 2009 2:47 PM EST up reply actions
I thought he seemed like a pretty good guy until his fake handshake/kick. It’s hard to get past that kind of pre-medidated BS. That said he certainly has some talent and should have some strength advantages in the featherweight division. Jens-Manny seems like a good matchup to me and if I remember correctly Manny was on Jens team on TUF 5.

what fight was it where he threw the kick after the handshake? i want to see that. link?

Sounds good! NOW bring in Yamamoto to go with Manny, Faber, Garcia and Brown and we’re really talking about some great matchups!!! BJ BJ BJ!!!

To all the numbnuts here that keep mentioning the "do you know who I am bro? thing, get the fuck over it already.
Besides it being another person, a lot of young mma fighters are cocky as fuck. You just might not know of it but they are.
I don’t think its a good thing, it just is.
It’s easy to be a keyboard warrior but try getting in the ring and win some fights. You guys might not like Manny but the kid has insane work ethics. The kid has great heart. I can’t say the same for a lot of top lever martial artists who are known to be legends yet wont fight in teh ring.
Manny needs to improve his game, true. I hope he does good.
