UFC Quick Quote: Lyoto Machida pulling for Keith Jardine; readying for battle win or lose

"I'm cheering for Jardine, but I think that Quinton is stronger, hits harder... I think Quinton is the favorite. I think I’ll have to wait a bit more. I could do one more fight, but only if they (UFC) gives me a good opponent, a man with strong name. I don’t want to go down again. All that the UFC putted, I always joined, but now is time for me to start to ask a bit too. I'm waiting Quinton’s fight, but I’m not worried. Everyone was saying that, if I win (Thiago Silva), I’d fight for the belt, but it didn’t happen, but I’m not worried about that. Imagine if I were thinking about the next fight and lose this one? It's the same thing now, I'm here, solving some things and I'm already thinking about returning to Belém and practice my base for, then, start to worry about my next battle, either by title or not. I just need to make good fights and it will happen…When I get there, it will be just party."

-- Top undefeated light heavyweight contender Lyoto Machida tells Tatame.com that he hopes Keith Jardine can upset former division champion Quinton "Rampage" Jackson in the UFC 96 main event on March 7. That's because if the "Dean of Mean" can reign supreme, Machida more than likely earns the next title shot against Rashad Evans sometime later in the summer. With a win Jackson, is likely to get the nod against "Sugar." Regardless of the outcome Machida indicates that he is preparing to stay busy even if it means he has to win one more fight.

I think Rampage is gonna have an ugly fight with Jardine. Simply because he doesn’t charge forward. In the end though everyone in MMA knows that the LHW belt belongs to the Dragon.

I acyually feel bad for machida…and rampage.
Rashad is a pussy!!

Rashad is scared of NO MAN! And he’s gonna beat either or them, hop on the RASHAD wagon..he’s gonna be champ for a while !

I 3rd that…Rashad ducked Page straight up!

by Chadx23 on Feb 18, 2009 10:54 PM EST up reply actions

Rashads gonna lose the belt first TD.

Rampage or Machida beat him.

I hate Rashad, he’s in the top 10 of LHW, and he probably will give a good fight for either, but he loses both those fights.

The problem is the 205 division is so full of talent that it’s turned into Paper rock scissors.

Machida and Rampage are the only two I see holding the belt for any length of time.

by ShaiZ on Feb 18, 2009 10:57 PM EST up reply actions

how did he turn down a title shot! he just got the belt! rampage and rashad fought the same night and rampage lost to griffin which drops him down at least 2-3 fights.then won once!
Machida HAS NOT LOST!!!!!!!!!!!
WHY DOES Rampage deserve one!!!!
WHY!!!!!!!!!

by Mikeybear2009 on Feb 19, 2009 1:24 AM EST up reply actions

I agree with you 100% and I have always I am a fan of both Machida and Page, but Page should definately be behind Machida as far as title shots are concerned. I have my favourite fighters, but I never want any of them getting any favours done for them or taking short cuts when it comes to getting a title shot, but he majority of fans do not care or mind if their favourite fighter gets given a short cut to a title shot. The people who winge and moan about Rashad are always the same people that winge and moan about him, and will use any reason and excuse to do so and this will always be the case. The same ones that are still bitter about him beating Chuck and Forrest. When they talk about fighters being a pussy they need to remember that Chuck his camp and Forrest wanted nothing to do with fighting Machida, Rashad has never ducked anybody.

by Ade on Feb 19, 2009 4:41 AM EST up reply actions

i thought that it was rampage who didnt want to fight for the belt?

correct me if im wrong~

but im almost positive that page said he did not want a title shot.

rashad is no pussy!~ the man is undefeated!

how come u guys cant respect the champ??

its like all the mir haters…….respect the champs!

that said~ rashad loses his first fight as champ..

Why is Machida hoping that Jardine wins? Sounds to me like Machida is looking for the easier fight…is the dragon scared of the wolf?

by allamerican on Feb 19, 2009 8:49 AM EST up reply actions

allamerican:

by allamerican on Feb 19, 2009 9:16 AM EST up reply actions

by Machine on Feb 19, 2009 9:21 AM EST up reply actions

I have always had respect for Rashad and thugh that he was a talented fighter, apart from when he used to that annoying bouncing and jumping around thing of his,but I have never really thought much of Mir. I thought that he was overrated in the past and a win over an inexperienced Lesner and an absolutely crap performance by Nog has not made me think any differently. And if unlike me you still think he is a top 5 fighter, when he gets bets beaten by Lesner and probably the following two opponents, you will soon be changing your mind.

by Ade on Feb 19, 2009 9:46 AM EST up reply actions

Stinky: u r wrong!

Of course Rampage wants to fight for the title, which fighters doesnt? Rampage didnt want 1 more fight 1st, he was just dying to whoop Forrest’s ass! That loss is eating away at him. Rampage wanted a title shot, but if he could get his hands on Forrest first, he would prefer that!

Rampage or Machida will both beat Rashad Evans. Rashad will NOT successfully defend his title at UFC 100. THe real LHW title fight will be Rampage vs. Machida! that fight will crown the best Lightheavyweight on the Planet.

I do however believe that after Rampage and Machida, Rashad is the 3rd best LHW on earth! Rashad is getting better and better with each fight, and no shame in being the #3 LHW on the planet…I dont mean to diminish shad, I just think that Right nOw, Page and Machida are a little better!

what I am sick of and find it extremely unfair is that Rashad has the luxury of sitting back and watching his opponents fight his best friend and training partner Jardine, before Rashad fights them. That gives Greg Jackson a tremendous advantage when its time to gameplan for Shads fights! I dont like this one bit, and it actually starting to piss me off!

Machida should be fighting Evans at UFC100 and make the winner of this fight the winner of Evans/Machida. This is bullshit give the guy his shot. You can’t give say Lesnar deserves a shot 3 fights into his career but Machida can’t get one.

by jay on Feb 18, 2009 10:07 PM EST up reply actions

I agree, Lyoto vs Evans at UFC 100.

by Rancho Coocoo on Feb 19, 2009 1:53 AM EST up reply actions

Why does it belong to Machida? Rashad is the champ he beat the champ…don’t no what you are saying?

by Robert(1) on Feb 19, 2009 9:11 AM EST up reply actions

Let’s take a closer look at this. Machida is a great fighter but look at his opponents. Sokodju was overhyped and has lost three of his last four fights. Tito hasn’t beat anyone other than Ken Shamrock in the last four years. Thiago Silva is good but also alot of hype, mostly because he was the first one to demolish Houston Alexander and everyone thought he was the truth. Machida needs to fight a credible top five UFC tested LHW, PERIOD!!!! Rampage has fought the best in the world already. He has nothing to prove. But I have to say this….Please don’t sleep on Rashad. He can beat anyone in the LHW division if he plans the right fight. You may not like him but he gets better every fight.

by knowone on Feb 19, 2009 1:44 AM EST up reply actions

Machida only fights the opponents he is given, is it his fault that those are the ones given to him by the UFC. I do not think it is, and his title chances shouldnot be made to suffer because of it. You are saying Thiago was a load of hype, no one person would have said that bout him before Machida knocked him out. When Diego lost his match to Koscheck because of the illness he thought would end his career,he actually asked to fight Jon Fith in his next fight, a fighter who everybody was scared of fighting and avoiding. I gave him respect for that even though he lost the match. If more of the top guys in the light heavyweight division were like that and called out Machida in the past then you would probably have a few of the top guys on his list of beaten opponents. It is pretty obvious that some fighters are treated a lot better when it comes to their opponents, you only have to look at Liddel being given a past his sell by date Shogun to see that.

by Ade on Feb 19, 2009 9:33 AM EST up reply actions

I hope Rampage wins and then beats Evans, they should put Forrest vs. Machida on the Evans Rampage card and have the winners fight latter (Machida vs. Rampage).

Machida vs. Evans would not be a good match-up since both are counter fighters.

by mark on Feb 19, 2009 10:30 AM EST up reply actions

Word is Forrest is probably going to be out until 2010. Hand injury is really really bad. So talks of Forrest fighting anyone is out for awhile.

by big D on Feb 19, 2009 3:10 PM EST up reply actions

yea he should have fought for the belt long ago.
do you think jardine will pull a upset?

by NM on Feb 18, 2009 9:28 PM EST reply actions

The UFC is the bad guy in all of this. Rampage lost the belt in a razor close decision. He certainly deserves his chance to reclaim the throne. Machida is equally worthy, if not more so of having a title shot based on his body of work. The absurd in all of this is the Rampage vs. Jardine fight, which is only serving to delay Rashad’s defense of the belt.

This is what should have happened. Rashad should have been booked to fight either Rampage or Machida in March or April at the latest. Whichever one that was passed over should have been gaurenteed first in line to fight the winner of Rashad’s 1st title defense. As for Jardine, there are plenty of other potential match-ups vs. solid light heavies that would have made more sense. Instead, what we have is kind of a mess, and unfair to Machida for sure.

by CL on Feb 18, 2009 10:33 PM EST up reply actions

Griffin exploited Jackson with leg kicks. Jardine has far more vicious kicks than Forrest. And Jardine beat Forrest, who beat Rampage. So, yes Jardine can pull an upset, but I don’t think that he will.

by Josh H. on Feb 18, 2009 10:48 PM EST up reply actions

YOU do realize that checking leg kicks isnt that difficult? One of the easiest things for Rampage to correct! It wont be a problem ever again! I am more worried about Jardine’s body kicks!

get over the leg kick thing, its over and will NEVER be an issue again!

by john on Feb 19, 2009 6:50 PM EST up reply actions

jardine if he beats rampage wouldnt get a title shot because he only beat a crappy brandon vera and a good rampage, he would need another win unlike rampage or machida

by ian on Feb 18, 2009 9:28 PM EST reply actions

i kno but rampage only ko’d silva thats it.i think machida should have a title shot then rampage the winner of that.

by NM on Feb 18, 2009 9:33 PM EST up reply actions

that isn’t it at all.. Rampage is a legend and a fan favourite that had a good win streak before the judges (Dana) decided to hand the belt to Forrest who was given bs titleshot by beating a Shogun in Nogueira shape that night and getting an extremely controversial decision against the champ Rampage.. and do not ever listen to Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg they wouldn’t even notice if somebody came in with a broken leg, Dana must be putting the words into their mouths especially Joe’s he’s soo biased towards some fighters that it’s unbelivable and he’s talking out of his a$$ to make them sound so good! like when Mir beat Nog and when Forrest fought Rampage to turn the fans into the one fighter Dana wants too.. Thiago Silva looked horrible when he fought Lyoto, and i can’t wait for Rampage to knock his ass out on a stretcher!

by RoB on Feb 18, 2009 10:17 PM EST up reply actions

Im certainly rooting for Jardine. Not only because i despise Jackson, but i want to see Machida take the belt away from Evans asap.

by Jakob on Feb 18, 2009 9:33 PM EST reply actions

It’s a tough pick for me. I say Jardine is going to lose, and he’s going to lose early. BUT, Jardine has some nasty leg kicks, and Rampage doesn’t seem to know how to handle those. Plus Jardine has immense ground skills…if he can use ’em (or will let himself use them) he could sumbit Rampage very quickly.

by Jon on Feb 19, 2009 9:42 AM EST up reply actions

Machida is a class act. This guy is quickly becoming one of my favourites. I want Rampage to win but I don’t want him to have the title shot. Why not put Evans against Machida before ufc 100 and then have Rampage (Who should easily beat Jardine) vs the winner of Evans and Machida at ufc 100.

by Budgell on Feb 18, 2009 9:34 PM EST reply actions

Completely agree. I’m hoping Evans-Machida is in the works. Nothing else makes much sense.

Machida is already a champion!! he doesn’t need the belt to prove it.
UFC is more for the entertainment and not for sport…there is no fair game, he won 6 straight fights in row and he doesn’t get a title shot..
Forrest gum beat an over rated Shogun and he gets a title shot?

by MaChida on Feb 18, 2009 10:06 PM EST up reply actions

its because ur UFC only cares for cash..we are fairly aware that most of the fans dont like machida because they find him boring…they really cant appreciate guys with class and humble..they want to see a mean looking and shT talking stars just like brock..machida is undoubtedly the number one contender a very long time ago..but he never get it because he draws less crowd..they need poster boys…sad but thats how ur UFC works…

by gaara on Feb 18, 2009 10:28 PM EST up reply actions

  1. for a very long time now? Since when would you say? After beating rookie overhyped Sokoju? Or was it beating Tito Ortiz that put him to the top?

by tr8k on Feb 18, 2009 10:39 PM EST up reply actions

How about absolutely killing rich franklin and an undefeated thiago silva, brutally knocking both of them out. Give up the machida bashing he will be champion by the end of the year whether you like it or not.

by LG on Feb 18, 2009 10:48 PM EST up reply actions

after he beat tito..there’s really no one behind him..but it was plausable since forrest and page became coaches of tuf and hav to go at it..he shud fought forrest after that or even rashad for the title shot…my opinion

by gaara on Feb 18, 2009 10:53 PM EST up reply actions

Ortiz was a very solid win. Not only did Machida beat Tito, he dominated him. Don’t forget that Tito beat Griffin and Evans(kind of) not that long ago.

by Josh H. on Feb 18, 2009 10:55 PM EST up reply actions

Rampage will knock Machida’s head off guy’s. There is no fighter in the division that has the speed and power that Rampage has, yes Forrest found his weakness but it’s a weakness he is going to be able to fix and Jardine is the perfect opponent to make sure he has fixed his gaurd vs. leg kicks. I think Machida is a great fighter too but he has not faced a man like Rampage.

by Beaver on Feb 19, 2009 11:45 PM EST up reply actions

wow u guys hated machida b4 and now u love him, mma fans our never out for anyone unless there winners, i liked machida for a while and im a fan of hughes so im happy to say i liked fighters over winners..

I’ve been a fan of Machida since he got into the ufc and I’ve felt like he should of had a title shot for a while now. I always cheer for this guy. Being a black belt in Karate myself I find it very interesting that he can utilize those skills so well. This guy has always been interesting and the way he absolutely dominates his opponents is spectacular. And Matt Hughes has been my favourite fighter since I began watching mma. I’m starting to lose interest in him but I’ll always be a fan of his.

by Budgell on Feb 18, 2009 10:17 PM EST up reply actions

when machida beat bj penn is what caught my eye then i seen that he beat stephan bonnar and rich franklin then i went to watch his debut at ufc 67 against sam hoger he was very friendly.

yea srry if i sounded mean i just got offended how ppl only respect him after a ko, and now they call rich franklin a gatekeeper, thats bull i hate how they think a fighter suxx unless he knocks ppl out fast, i only stop liking a fighter if they do bad things like hurting a person outside of the rings and bad mouthing legends..

by guyverbob on Feb 18, 2009 11:01 PM EST up reply actions

They should have just had Machida vs Rampage planned out for UFC 97/98 or something and had a different main card for 96.

by DirtyML on Feb 18, 2009 9:56 PM EST reply actions

Or they could of had Rampage Vs. Machida at UFC 96 and the winner fight Evans at 100.

by BK on Feb 18, 2009 10:16 PM EST up reply actions

That sounds good to me.

by Budgell on Feb 18, 2009 10:17 PM EST up reply actions

I think that makes sense I don’t even see why it would have had to come to that. Once Rampage ko’d Silva he should have been given a shot at Rashad. Rashad declined for whatever reason and Rampage was booked to fight Jardine. Fine. But once Machida beats Silva then he HAS to get a crack at Rashad. The matchmaking surrounding the LHW crown makes zero sense to me and I think the UFC gets this stuff right most of the time.

Must be all those losses Machida has. Wait..

by Josh H. on Feb 18, 2009 10:56 PM EST up reply actions

by Plinko on Feb 19, 2009 12:12 AM EST up reply actions

The only reason i could see the ufc not giving Machida a title shot yet, is because of the quality of opponents he has beaten. I dont think he has beat anyone in the top 5 yet. Jon Fitch went through the same thing, winning 8 in a row in the ufc before he was given a title shot.

by tr8k on Feb 18, 2009 10:35 PM EST reply actions

so lesnar can lose to mir beat a washed up herring then fight couture for the belt?

it has nothing to do with beating big names its who sells fights!!fitch and machida dont sell fights!!

Why would Machida need to fights the winner of Liddel vs Rue? Liddel got KO by Evan, Evan Draw/lost to Tito, Tito lost to Machida?

Machida should be fighting the champ right now!! UFC is so much bull shit…Dana gives Machida what he deserve..

Martial art is all about Yin & Yang, Machida has the prefer mix of traditional & modern day arts.

by MaChida on Feb 19, 2009 4:11 AM EST up reply actions

That would be a clear step down for Machida and I’m a big fan of both Liddell and Rua, who would both be ranked towards the lower half of a LHW top 10 at best. Machida is no lower than top 3 and he needs to fight the very best at this point.

by JTD on Feb 19, 2009 8:26 AM EST up reply actions

Would have preferred Machida vs Rampage for the title shot as many people have mentioned, but since that is not gonna happen Machida needs to fight one last time before his crack at the title.
The winner of Liddell vs Rua would be a good fight but I don’t want to see Liddell get picked apart by the dragon. Maybe a fight against Forrest wouldn’t be a bad idea.

by oli on Feb 19, 2009 7:45 AM EST reply actions

I don’t even get caught up in the actual titles/belts but I just like to see the best fighters get the competition they deserve and Machida deserves the very best in the division. At this point it’s tough to argue that Rashad/Rampage aren’t at the top and Rampage is booked to fight. Rashad-Machida is just too obvious.

by JTD on Feb 19, 2009 8:28 AM EST up reply actions

I say if Rampage does win and gets next title shot just give Machida a fight just to keep him busy. I dunno throw him in there against a guy like Stann, Cantwell or Hamill. I know they are a step down but it would just be so Machida wouldn’t get rusty.

by rydinlow on Feb 19, 2009 8:44 AM EST reply actions

all of you guys are only cared about excitement by wanting rampage get a title shot rather than machida even though technically you all know that no body fully deserves the title shot right now besides Machida.

by mad_drummer on Feb 19, 2009 9:08 AM EST reply actions

I’m not the biggest fan of Machida, but he seems to be stepping it up and quite frankly, until someone figures out how to beat him, he’s gonna clean up the division.

Thiago was overrated as all hell, but I think he would give some trouble to anyone else in LHW. Machida embarrassed him.

by Jon on Feb 19, 2009 9:29 AM EST reply actions

there’s a difference between having the skills to be the champ and actually earning a chance to fight for the belt, yes machida has the skills to be champ, but i still think right now rampage is a bit more deserving, he was champ, lost a close decision, knocked silva’s ass out 1st round, he should get a chance to get his belt back, machida will get his chance soon enough and that’s that.

by fighter879 on Feb 19, 2009 11:07 AM EST reply actions

I think both Rashad and Rampage will have problem fighting Machida…They both have very good boxing skills, probably the best in the LHW division, but this is not a boxing match…
Machida has far more superior kicks & Knees and he can attack from all different angle and from the outside.

Unless these two guys can move faster or have better footwork than Machida, I don’t think they will the have chance.

by MaChida on Feb 19, 2009 5:33 PM EST reply actions

I agree Machida is a beast, I can see him dominating the LHW division like Anderson does MW and Fedor does all heavyweights.

by BK on Feb 19, 2009 5:38 PM EST up reply actions

Rampage is going to destroy Jardine then Evan’s and then Machida the end.

by Puck Head on Feb 19, 2009 8:37 PM EST reply actions

Agreed Puck Head Machida is a great fighter and so is Evan’s…hell this is MMA’s deepest division I truely believe the champion in this division deserves better PforP ratings. It’s hard not to have a loss when the talent is so close. Imagine Anderson Silva fighting himself? Would one Silva lose his ranking cause he lost to the #1 PforP fighter? Anyway I love this division and even though my heart is with Rampage I know he’ll have to be at the top of his game every fight. Depending on what Jardine shows up it could be one hell of a battle. Machida should fight the winner of chuck and Sho Gun or Forrest if he’s ready. Love watching them all but I cheer for only Rampage when he’s in octagon.
