WEC 39 full fight card for 'Brown vs Garcia' on March 1 made official

World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) today announced the official lineup for WEC 39: "Brown vs. Garcia," which is scheduled for the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, on March 1.

The event marks the first trip to the "Lone Star State" for the Zuffa-owned promotion.

WEC Featherweight champion Mike Thomas Brown will defend his 145-pound title for the first time against Leonard Garcia since capturing the crown from superstar Urijah Faber in November 2008. Garcia -- a disciple of MMA trainer extraordinaire Greg Jackson -- has earned his status as the number one contender after winning his first two fights for the promotion with first round knockouts.

Typically, WEC only features four main card bouts during its shows; however, the late addition of the featherweight scrap between rising star Jose Aldo and Chris Mickle has forced the organization to feature five bouts during this event.

That's great news.

In other action, lightweights Richard Crunkilton and Bart Palaszewski will mix it up in a number one contender eliminator match on the main card, too. The winner of the 155-pound contest is expected to earn the right to face division kingpin Jamie Varner at a later date.

Former 155-pound champion "Razor" Rob McCullough will also take on ex-division top contender in Marcus Hicks in a battle of little big men. And to round out the main card, undefeated Team Takedown prospect Johny Hendricks will lock horns with seven fight WEC veteran Alex Serdyukov in perhaps the last welterweight bout ever for the organization.

Here's the full lineup for WEC 39: "Brown vs. Garcia:"

Star-divide

155 lbs.: "Razor" Rob McCullough (16-5) vs. Marcus "The Wrecking Ball" Hicks (8-1)
170 lbs.: Johny Hendricks (4-0) vs. Alex "The Russian Crusher" Serdyukov (8-4)

Under card (May not be broadcast):

I cant wait to see Aldo vs. Garcia in the future!

by john on Feb 17, 2009 12:01 PM EST up reply actions

Bet Aldo BIG!!!! Cant wait!

by john on Feb 17, 2009 12:10 PM EST up reply actions

What are the odds on Aldo?

by JTD on Feb 17, 2009 12:22 PM EST up reply actions

dont know, dont care! however big the odds are, they wont scare me away! aldo wont lose this fight!

I hate to admit it, but I think the only fight I have seen of Brown’s is the Faber fight….which is why I havent been analyzing or commenting on the Gracia vs. Brown match up!

Maniacs: How good is Brown?

by john on Feb 17, 2009 12:29 PM EST up reply actions

only other time I’ve seen him is before Faber when he beat Jeff Curran UD…he’s big, thats for sure but I’m on the fence still. I would be a believer if he gets by “bad boy” too. I don’t believe in lucky shots but I do believe that Faber was getting a little silly and could’ve won that fight without the fancy sh*t

by McArthur on Feb 17, 2009 1:29 PM EST up reply actions

Totally agree!

by john on Feb 17, 2009 4:33 PM EST up reply actions

This sucks i wanted them to matchup Aldo with either Paixao or Assuncao- get him a stern test. Also Brown via UD. He’s gonna smash urijah after this too. U heard it here first.

by NameNotRequired on Feb 17, 2009 6:13 PM EST up reply actions

Sure thing GSP4PREZ, only if you pay me 1/10 if he wins?

by ViolentMike on Feb 17, 2009 12:12 PM EST up reply actions

Brown, Razor, Cleat FTW.

Serdyukov I hope gets his face smashed. Cant stand the guy for some reason. He’ll probably win though.

Razor Rob will get tooled again…He’s an arrogant piece of garbage. Someone please tell me why Alex Karalexis is still employed?

by FukStyck on Feb 17, 2009 1:23 PM EST up reply actions

Alex Karalexis is still employed because of TUF 1. Has to be.

by JTD on Feb 17, 2009 1:37 PM EST up reply actions

Probably right..I still love him getting choked out by Von Flue. He had no clue where he was. Funny $hit.

by FukStyck on Feb 17, 2009 3:24 PM EST up reply actions

Synister, Please share about Serdyukov.

He’s only been on the WEC undercards so far (twice) and has lost twice to John Alessio and once to Jon Fitch a while ago.

by ViolentMike on Feb 17, 2009 2:28 PM EST up reply actions

that first (twice) was not supposed to be there. There was only supposed to be one twice…

by ViolentMike on Feb 17, 2009 2:33 PM EST up reply actions

Nothing in particular. Just one of those guys that bug me with the way he looks. I seen him on Wreckage a few times, and hes a pretty good fighter. I just don’t like him.

by Synyster [[2009 Year of Gegard Mousasi]] on Feb 17, 2009 6:28 PM EST up reply actions

Solid card as usual for the WEC. Nice to see Hendricks on the main card.

What are the chances Brown/Garcia makes it to a decision? I’m thinking not good.

I’m also interested to see Razor Rob vs. Hicks since you know Hicks can take a punch after the punishment he took against Varner.

by JTD on Feb 17, 2009 12:21 PM EST reply actions

What’s up with Serdyukov’s nickname, The Russian Crusher? Does that mean he crushes Russians or he’s a Russian who crushes?

by PW on Feb 17, 2009 12:26 PM EST reply actions

good question

by McArthur on Feb 17, 2009 1:29 PM EST up reply actions

i love the wec but only know four fighters on this card (garcia, hicks, crunkilton, and rob) why all the hype on this aldo cat, how can you guys be so sure?

by Blazy J on Feb 17, 2009 12:43 PM EST reply actions

Seen him fight several times now, and Urijah Faber sees him as the toughest challenge at 145 in WEC

by ViolentMike on Feb 17, 2009 2:27 PM EST up reply actions

Im waiting for Garcia vs. Aldo! Mark my words, that wil be fight of the year whenever it happens!

by john on Feb 17, 2009 4:34 PM EST up reply actions

Garcia – Aldo would be great. The winner of Garcia-Brown likely faces Faber, right? Loser of Garcia-Brown faces Aldo? Sounds like a mini-tournament that makes sense to me!

by JTD on Feb 18, 2009 9:40 AM EST up reply actions

bcuz aldo has looked like a beast in his last couple fights. he destroyed that poor fellow at the cerrone vs varner card not too long ago. i wouldnt bet my house on aldo but i would bet my car. garcia vs brown should be awesome too. havent seen too much of brown either but i know he has heavy hands so i hope they stand and bang for a bit.

by JakeAnd on Feb 17, 2009 1:08 PM EST reply actions

I don’t see Brown being a threat to Garcia in any way. Garcia can bang with him and from his fight with Huerta you know he has a very solid chin. They guy is also a scrapper with excellent jitsu. Garcia takes it in the 2nd. Setting up a fight with Faber. Can’t wait to see that one

by pickle on Feb 17, 2009 1:17 PM EST up reply actions

Anyone who can knock off Faber is a threat to any LW.

by PW on Feb 17, 2009 2:12 PM EST up reply actions

Considering that Faber has some pretty wild strikes, like the elbow he threw that led to him getting knocked out, I’m going with the “Lucky Punch” theory.
Garcia by TKO.

by BrutalKnockout. on Feb 17, 2009 5:41 PM EST up reply actions

they are featherweights, not lightweight. These guys would get the crap kicked out of them by top LW’s. Brown is a small lightweight, but a big big FW. I don’t think urijah can take him, size matters…

by joe k. on Feb 22, 2009 9:32 PM EST up reply actions

I was wondering what had happened to Alex Karalexis… all the way to the undercard of the WEC OUCH!!!!!!

by pickle on Feb 17, 2009 1:20 PM EST reply actions

And he shouldn’t even be there!!!

by FukStyck on Feb 17, 2009 1:24 PM EST up reply actions

He has been in the WEC for a looong time now. In fact, he was even a “contender”

by ViolentMike on Feb 17, 2009 2:30 PM EST up reply actions

You said it right, WAS a contender. GARBAGE now, replace him with some up and coming talent.

by FukStyck on Feb 17, 2009 3:26 PM EST up reply actions

the wec all ways brings it, cant wait for these fights

by child on Feb 17, 2009 2:56 PM EST reply actions

You sir are correct. I get more excited for the WEC cards then the UFC.

by FukStyck on Feb 17, 2009 4:04 PM EST up reply actions

Eh, I dont know about that. I mean, UFC cards are always amazing half the time while WEC cards are just awesome. Although if you compare this card to Jackson/Jardine, I’ll go with this. To be honest, do they seriously think “Glass Jaw” Jardine is gonna upset him like Forrest did? Not a chance.

by BrutalKnockout. on Feb 17, 2009 5:44 PM EST up reply actions

Well, you certainly get more bang for your buck with the WEC!

by JTD on Feb 18, 2009 12:30 PM EST up reply actions

wec is not quite at ufc level. it only has 2nd rate fighters, if they were thrown in the mix in the ufc they would get manhandled

by melvin on Mar 1, 2009 11:52 AM EST up reply actions

Ya Jardine will not last but 2 minutes against Rampage

by mmalover on Feb 18, 2009 12:38 AM EST reply actions

I would agree but Jardine is probably as unpredictable a fighter as there is in the UFC. He either bring a surprisingly good performance or is knocked out silly. I tend to think the knocked out silly part is very likely but Jardine can bring on a surprisingly great performance out of nowhere.

by JTD on Feb 18, 2009 9:37 AM EST up reply actions

jardine definately has a puncher’s chance here. don’t get me wrong, my money is on rampage, but if they stand and mix it up, jardine could surprise us, his unusual punches could throw rampage off his game, and he could get the tko.
