UFC Quick Quote: Thales Leites ready for wherever Anderson Silva takes him at UFC 97

thales leites

"I can fight him standing. I will not be afraid to fight him in the standup game. I will never be afraid. I’ve been training my Muay Thai and boxing for five years and I think that I’m ready for any situation. I will be ready for anything. I know he wants to fight me standing to try and knock me out. But anything can happen. Cote was doing a good job with him closing the distance and keeping him down every time and moving forward in front of him. I’m thinking I have to do the same thing.... The most important thing is I trust in me and believe in me. He has two arms and two legs like me and like everyone else. If I believe in me and trust me and do my job I can do it. That’s it."

-- Top middleweight contender Thales Leites talks to Sherdog.com about how his skills match up against division champion Anderson Silva. The two Brazilians are scheduled to collide at UFC 97: "Redemption" at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on April 18. Leites -- a talented Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt -- feels that he can stand with the deadly striker if necessary, but feels his ground game is the one area where he is better than "The Spider." Perhaps he can snag one of those four limbs and ride off into the sunset as the new (and unlikely) 185-pound champion? Easier said than done, but stranger things have happened inside the Octagon ... like if he were able to somehow finish Silva via strikes.

I hate threads like this! UFC 95 is this weekend, yet we are already talking about UFC 97. THats why I am usually sick of talking about an event by the time it rolls around!

F this!

by john on Feb 17, 2009 9:10 AM EST up reply actions

ya where’s the 95 Blog dammit!!!!!!!

by McArthur on Feb 17, 2009 9:12 AM EST up reply actions

Sanchez/Stevenson just doesnt bring the interest that the Spider does, that would be my guess.

by Spyder on Feb 17, 2009 9:38 AM EST up reply actions

There have been plenty of blogs regarding Sanchez/Stevenson of late. What more is there to say? I think the Gouveia/Marquardt matchup is pretty well exhausted as well. Other than Maia/Sonnen I don’t think there’s a high profile matchup that warrants that much further discussion.

by GregC on Feb 17, 2009 11:26 AM EST up reply actions

I dont fault mania for the early coverage of events. if THales has a quote out there, what can mania do but report it? I dont fault mania, at all….I just hate it because by the time of the fight, us die hards have over hyped the fights so much and said, everything that needed to be said!

Anyone wanna talk UFC 95, holla at me!

I will tell you what fight hasnt been talked about at all that warrants discussion:

Markham vs. Hardy…Fight of the night, or KO of the night potential!

who wants to start?

by john on Feb 17, 2009 11:38 AM EST up reply actions

I meant Dana’s Blog Greg…

by McArthur on Feb 17, 2009 11:42 AM EST up reply actions

I’ve been excited about that fight since it was announced. I like Markham. Hope he KOs this dude in front of his hometown. WAR RORY!!

Who you got John?

by Synyster [[2009 Year of Gegard Mousasi]] on Feb 17, 2009 11:43 AM EST up reply actions

NO freaking idea Synyster! This match up is tough to call if you ask me. Hardy is no joke, markham hits like a bear!

Possible outcomes:
Markham via KO
Hardy via decision

I tend to give the nod to the fighter with the best chance of ending the fight so I would have to give a slight edge to markham!

by john on Feb 17, 2009 12:05 PM EST up reply actions

I haven’t seen much of either guy really. Just Markham once and I haven’t watched Hardy at all.

Based on just stats and stuff, I’d say if Markham doesn’t finish it by TKO, then a decision, more than likely a split, in which Hardy will win, just because I didn’t pick him.

My official prediction, Markham TKO 3rd round.

by Synyster [[2009 Year of Gegard Mousasi]] on Feb 17, 2009 12:08 PM EST up reply actions

Hardy will definitely be awarded a split decision if it comes to that. not cause you picked against him, but because the fight is taking place in England!

I saw Markham fight a couple times in the IFL and he is pretty good for a Miletich fighter!

Hardy is as tough as they come, and I am not sure Markham will be able to KO him, so I am going to have to go with Hardy via split decision. But dont hold me to it! your guess is as good as mine!

I am also looking forward to rude boy vs. Paul Kelly! Dont ask me why!

by john on Feb 17, 2009 12:14 PM EST up reply actions

good question: where are Dana’s video blogs?

by john on Feb 17, 2009 12:35 PM EST up reply actions

why?

by Synyster [[2009 Year of Gegard Mousasi]] on Feb 17, 2009 1:15 PM EST up reply actions

I like Kelly, he always comes to fight and Rude boy just wants to Bang it out! This fight wont make it to the judges!

by john on Feb 17, 2009 1:24 PM EST up reply actions

Syn..you don’t like Dana’s blogs?? Last events were a little weak but some are kinda cool to watch no?

by McArthur on Feb 17, 2009 1:31 PM EST up reply actions

Damn, you’re right McArthur! I hadn’t even noticed that Dana’s usual pre-fight blogs were absent. Maybe he heard so many people complaining that they were boring and he stopped doing them. Some weren’t that great, but I appreciated seeing a behind-the-scenes look at the week before the fight.

UFC 97 news:

SHOGUN is going to Murder Liddell*** Read this post:

Right now Alistar Overeem is living/training with none other than shogun doing cardio with Alejarra at Wand’s new gym in Vegas. Helping Shogun get ready for his fight with Liddell!

U hear that Shogun Haters?

Shogun is training for Chuck with Alistar and wandy’s gym using wandy’s genius conditioning coach? Still think shogun is going to gas and get beat up by chuck? I sure dont!

Old shogun will be back!

I can’t wait for this fight… I haven’t been really amped to watch someone get a solid beat down for a while.

by Sp00ner1234 on Feb 17, 2009 10:12 AM EST up reply actions

It’s a win – win fight for the fans. Either we get to see the Spider back to his usual domination or a massive upset happens that will have us talking for months

by DF on Feb 17, 2009 11:04 AM EST up reply actions

Silva wont respect Leites stand-up like he did with Cote thought.

I don’t think he’s got that KO power to keep Silva in distance…

by Jee on Feb 17, 2009 9:16 AM EST reply actions

Leites will get knocked out cold within 3 minutes if he stands with silva. silva is almost unbeatable but if you have any shot of winning you have to do what Luttter did and take him down.

by pug on Feb 17, 2009 5:01 PM EST up reply actions

Im tired of fighters saying they are not afraid of Silva. Thank you for telling us how unafraid you really are, I’m sure all you have to do is think you can beat Silva and it’ll be done. I think the same idea applies to flying so I’m going to give that a shot right after you beat Silva. He should be coming up with a valid game plan on how to beat Silva, taking Cote’s isn’t going to work for him. I wish they would just book Okami to fight Silva immediately after Silva thrashes Lietes in the first. Since Silva has never really been hurt and ends his fights in the first or second round I think he could take two fights in one night.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Feb 17, 2009 9:19 AM EST reply actions

You think Okami is a more valid contender… its not like the loss Silva has to Okami is a real loss.. it was a DQ. And Silva considers Okami a bad fighter because he thought Okami faked the funk to stop the fight, so you know he is gonna want to make a mockery of Okami’s face… which he will because he’s Anderson Silva (write that down)

by Sp00ner1234 on Feb 17, 2009 10:14 AM EST up reply actions

Which is even more reason that the UFC should have booked Silva to fight Okami coming off his lackluster performance against Cote. If the UFC ever wanted Anderson to come out and look super impressive, its this fight, which is why I believe they named Thales to be the #1 contender. He has ZERO standup skills in comparison to Anderson. And does anyone remember Thales’s takedowns? If you can call them that, they are more like “trips” which will NOT work against Anderson unless you want to clinch with him first…

I got Anderson Silva being at least a -1400 favorite to win, and you know what, I will STILL bet on him!

by ViolentMike on Feb 17, 2009 11:42 AM EST up reply actions

Leites is one of my favorite young fighters! Why did they have to book him to face Silva?

by john on Feb 17, 2009 12:06 PM EST up reply actions

If Leites wins that’d be a huge payoff..

by Synyster [[2009 Year of Gegard Mousasi]] on Feb 17, 2009 12:10 PM EST up reply actions

Anderson will win the fight, especially since he will come in pissed because of the Cote fiasco! However, I dont think Silva will steamroll Thales. Its should be a good fight, and thales should make it interesting for about 7 minutes, but then Silva will take over and end it before the 10 minute mark!

i wonder who thiago Silva will face next!

If Banha destroys Cantwell the way I expect him too, I would love to see the bad blood match up between silva vs. Banha!

I also wouldnt mind seeing Silva vs. Forrest!

However, I think that the winner of Liddell/Shogun, which wil be shogun, will face Forrest….so maybe they will book thiago against the loser of Liddell/Shogun!

by john on Feb 17, 2009 12:18 PM EST up reply actions

I hadn’t thought that maybe they wanted to make Anderson look good but its my opinion that almost every fight he is in he looks fantastic and in control. Cote being one of the exceptions to that. I wouldn’t mind seeing any of the four (Liddell, Shogun, Forest, Silva) fighting one another but I agree that Silva Forrest would be a good fight but if I can get Shogun Forest and Silva Liddell then I’m all for it. Here’s to hoping your right!

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Feb 17, 2009 3:24 PM EST up reply actions

cheers to that!

by john on Feb 17, 2009 4:38 PM EST up reply actions

I say Silva by KTFO in round 2.

by DealPlayground.com on Feb 17, 2009 9:52 AM EST reply actions

It would be so good if Silva lost this. We’d at least get another interesting division. Only HW and LHW are really in play at the moment.

by Leeroy on Feb 17, 2009 9:54 AM EST reply actions

Ummm, welterweight, you have heard of Thiago Alves? Grease Saint Pierre isn’t taking that one sorry

by The Dude on Feb 17, 2009 10:51 AM EST up reply actions

Nothing’s guaranteed in MMA, but GSP is and should be the prohibitive favorite in that fight. No fighter other than Randy Couture is as good at neutralizing an opponents strengths as GSP is. Thiago could possibly catch him on the feet and pull off the upset, but it would certainly be an upset. No matter how much Thiago’s takedown defense has improved, he won’t be able to stop GSP from taking the fight where he wants it to be. And if it goes to the ground I think it will become pretty academic.

by GregC on Feb 17, 2009 11:22 AM EST up reply actions

I am looking forward to gsp vs. thiago. Itll be a new challenge for GSP cuz I don’t think he has faced someone with as good stand up as Alves. Penn has good stand up but GSP had such a size and reach advantage it was nuetralized. If GSP wins this fight then I think the only fight for him that I would find interesting is him vs. Frank Shamrock. But that will never happen

by trbtrouble on Feb 17, 2009 11:38 AM EST up reply actions

And he finally gets to fight someone his own size.

But he will beat Thiago by Unanimous Decision after laying on him for 5 rounds.

by ViolentMike on Feb 17, 2009 11:44 AM EST up reply actions

Hopefully Thiago clips GSP behind the ear

by ViolentMike on Feb 17, 2009 11:44 AM EST up reply actions

“And he finally gets to fight someone his own size.”

your right I forgot to mention that, in fact, Alves might be bigger I’m not sure. I know he didnt make weight once and GSP hasn’t had that problem, but that cna be discipline not actually size. But I think this fight will be his biggest challenge. A bigger opponent then he is used to facing, with more knock out power than he is used to having to deal with.

by trbtrouble on Feb 17, 2009 11:52 AM EST up reply actions

yeah cause GSP just “lays” on guys a lot! Are you kidding?

by Jake on Feb 17, 2009 11:55 AM EST up reply actions

He now does avoid standing with anyone that can punch their way out of a wet paper bag.

I didn’t say Lay N Pray, just lay. Do you really belive that GSP will stand with Thiago for more than a combined 1 minute in a 25 minute fight???? I don’t and I wish there was a way to bet on it.

I’m just still waiting for GSP to score his FIRST KO.

Also, as an FYI, I HATE GSP and am biased. But he is the best WW in the world.

by ViolentMike on Feb 17, 2009 12:20 PM EST up reply actions

Jake: u r on crack if u think Gsp is going to trade with Alves! I dont think any welterweights are willing to do that!

GSP will try to lay n pray his way to a win, but I dont know if that will be easy. Tiago will probably be bigger and stronger than GSP, anmd that is not something that George is used to! I also think that Alves’s ever improving takedown defense, will be even better come UFC 100, and GSP isnt going to be able to take him down at will. Its a 5 rounder, so at some point GSP will put alves on his back, but Alves is a very tough guy… He will be able to survive GSP’s ground n pound, and make it out of the round….Every round starts in the stand up, and I dont think GSP can finish Alves. Which will give Alves at least 5 opportunities to knock GSP’s head off in the stand up!

by john on Feb 17, 2009 12:22 PM EST up reply actions

John-Jake didn’t say GSP would try to trade with Alves. When was the last time you saw Rush lay n pray his way to a decision? Please tell me. He may not be a knockout artist, but he’s no lay n pray guy either. I think you guys are underestimating GSP’s standup a bit anyways. He doesn’t try to knock guys out because he can just take them down and pound them out with little risk to himself, but he’s no slouch in the standup. Yes, I know Alves is better in the standup, but I don’t think GSP is going to just get dominated the way you seem to think so.

by Diceman on Feb 17, 2009 1:04 PM EST up reply actions

Chris Lytle was throwing down with Alves

by brendan on Feb 17, 2009 1:16 PM EST up reply actions

Brendan: tHats cause Lytle has a pair of ballz on him like no other!

Diceman: Here is my beef with GSP: Traditionally, he is an amazing Kickboxer! However since Serra knocked him into a psychiatrist office, he barely uses his world class stand up, and that Pisses me off! Lately, he just wrestles his way to wins…and I hate that! Especially when he has the tools to make every fight ultra exciting!

If GSP actually decides to trade with Alves it could be fight of the year candidate, but he wont dare stand n bang with the Muy Tai Wrecking Machine!

Keep in mind, I am super Biased towards Alves, so what do u expect me to say? He was like my baby, I watched him grow from a little baby, who got subbed by Fisher, into the monster that he is today! For those that remember, I predicted his meteoric rise about a year and a half ago! So of course I gotta roll with Alves!

by john on Feb 17, 2009 1:31 PM EST up reply actions

but Lytles chin is steel compared to Georges’

by McArthur on Feb 17, 2009 1:32 PM EST up reply actions

Lytle has a great chin, but the talk of GSP having a weak chin is ridiculous. He’s been TKO’d once in 20 fights. Other than the fight with Matt Serra (where he was hit behind the ear, not on the chin), when has he even been rocked?

by GregC on Feb 17, 2009 1:48 PM EST up reply actions

GSP hasnt been rocked a lot cause he hasnt really faced any good strikers. Think about it, most of his winns are against Grapplers/wrestlers:

Hughes
Fitch
Koschek
Trigg
Sherk
Karo

when he has faced good strikers:
BJ (who he didnt trade with)
Jay Heiron (didnt belong in there with GSP) so it doesnt really count!

Which one of his opponents really even possed the ability to “rock” GSP? NONE really! Thats why Alves is so damn dangerous and will win this fight! GSP hasnt seen a fighter with this skill set who will be bigger than stronger than him. GSP is going to be dwarfed by his opponent for once.

Too many factors that GSP isnt used to dealing with. Alves is going to win that belt!

by john on Feb 17, 2009 4:42 PM EST up reply actions

believing in yourself is one thing – taking on a creature like anderson silva is another!

No chance of winning this fight bring on Silva vs GSP/Alves!

by Randy for Couture on Feb 17, 2009 10:18 AM EST reply actions

Alves won’t fight Silva even if he beats GSP. He would have to first clean out the division (the way GSP has).

by GregC on Feb 17, 2009 11:23 AM EST up reply actions

GSP hasnt cleaned out anything YET!!!! He only has 2 title defenses, and there are new challengers for him at 170. For example: Kampman and condit (if they can string together wins), and Jake sheilds is going to sign with the UFC…its just a matter of time! I would like to see 5 title defenses before GSP moves up in weight! HOpefully Anderson will move up out of middleweight because I think Silva vs. GSP is a waste of time, that will be over hyped just to make a ton of money!

by john on Feb 17, 2009 11:41 AM EST up reply actions

GSP has kind of cleaned out the division…

but only has a few title defenses. There is still talent at 170.

by Bennie on Feb 17, 2009 12:55 PM EST up reply actions

He only has 2 title defenses, but he beat every legitimate title contender (besides Alves) on his 2 title runs. Condit would be a worthwhile opponent, but I thnk Kampmann heeds some work before challenging for a title. And the only guy he’s already beaten that I think deserves a rematch is Koscheck. Shields needs to sign with the UFC before he’s even in the conversation, but how does he beat GSP? He would be at a disadvantage wherever the fight went.

by GregC on Feb 17, 2009 1:47 PM EST up reply actions

yes sheilds would be at a disadvantage everywhere, but its a legitimate fight that needs to happen because Sheilds has been top 10 for a while now!

Dont get it twisted….Jake Sheilds next fight will be in the UFC, I am just not sure when that will be!~

by john on Feb 17, 2009 4:43 PM EST up reply actions

Silva wins my brutal decapitation before the fight starts…

by Oskarbravo on Feb 17, 2009 10:25 AM EST reply actions

this guys commits make Sonnen sound sane. “I can fight him standing. I will not be afraid to fight him in the standup game” lol RIP idiot.

by Dennis on Feb 17, 2009 10:39 AM EST reply actions

The thing is is that GSP is not in Andersons weight class, I would be really surprized if this fight ever takes place.

by Spyder on Feb 17, 2009 10:45 AM EST reply actions

And if it did, GSP would get owned on the feet due to technique and length, and Silva would eventually slap on a triangle to counter Grease’s Lay n Pray, not saying GSP always lay n prays, just saying that’s the only chance he would have against Silva

by The Dude on Feb 17, 2009 10:54 AM EST up reply actions

GSP lay n’ pray? lol

yea GSP needs to pray alot in a fight.

(BJ Penn dont remember what happened in 3rd & 4th round. borderline ko surviving mode.)

GSP is a Huge WW too athletic, explosive and too strong for his division.

Can he be the next Middleweight Champion? Of course he can.

Can he beat Anderson Silva? Now that’s the question.

Man you talk abut GSP like he was Travis Lutter this is ridiculous.

GSP stand-up (Jabs & Kicks) is very explosive. Even tought he didnt have that ko power.

Be sure that if GSP is on Silva, Pass guard, Elbows, Knees and Punches will be on the menu. And we will see, how much Silva can take.

IF GSP take him down…

by Jee on Feb 17, 2009 11:55 AM EST up reply actions

Silva would have an excellent guard, and his size difference would help him control GSP.

Think about it, Silva will be at 200 lbs and is the stronger guy. He also has long limbs, so he could control GSP.

The hard part is gettig Silva down.

Silva has KO on Irvin, could GSP knock out a guy at 220 lbs?

Silva dominated Hendo, how would GSP fare against hendo?

How would GSP fare against a very large and game Rich Franklin.

I love GSP and I think martial arts has a lot to do with technique, but at some point 10-15 lbs extra of strength and muscle plays a HUGE role.

by Bennie on Feb 17, 2009 12:54 PM EST up reply actions

Your right, but don’t forget that GSP trains with guys like Rashad, Jardine and i remember Rogan said that ; From the words of Jackson camp, GSP could take Rashad down almost at will and they werent able to take him down.

Those are light heavyweight… and the champ!

If it’s true, Silva could have a rough night.

That’s what makes this possible fight so exciting… both looks unbeatable in their strenght and gameplan and only 1 can win.

by Jee on Feb 17, 2009 1:57 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, Silva has two arms and legs just like everyone else…but his seem to be made from some sort of organic steel.

by MM_Eh on Feb 17, 2009 11:07 AM EST reply actions

by ShitleTot.com on Feb 17, 2009 11:38 AM EST reply actions

I wish wish wish that Cote would get another shot at Silva!!! Silva fought like an idiot in that fight.

by dana blanco on Feb 17, 2009 12:08 PM EST reply actions

Like a idiot huh?

In this sport, if you don’t respect the ability of your opponents, your out!

Silva caught him with some vicious strikes but Cote got a chin of granite.. and even when he receive those Cote always try to counters with the overhand right.

Silva play it smart, he was winning anyway.

There it is, MMA 101 just for you.
