UFC Quick Quote: Chael Sonnen and Demian Maia are better than Anderson Silva

"In my opinion, these are the two best guys fighting right now, me and Maia. I think whoever wins this fight is the best middleweight in the UFC. I think I'm better than Anderson and I think Demian's better than Anderson; I think we would both beat him. For my money, this is the fight to figure out who's the best. But who's the best and who's the champion are two different deals."

-- Chael Sonnen tells USA Today that he believes his opponent at UFC 95: "Sanchez vs. Stevenson," Demian Maia, as well as himself, are the two top middleweights in the organization. It's a rather bold statement, considering the world beater who currently reigns atop the division, Anderson Silva. Sonnen has won seven of his last eight matches since 2006. And he avenged that loss (Paulo Filho) in his most recent performance. Maia has never lost a fight in professional mixed martial arts competition. Meanwhile, Silva's dominance kind of speaks for itself. He will defend his 185-pound title against Thales Leites at UFC 97 in April. After that, if Silva wins, we may find out if Sonnen's assessment is accurate.

I’m laughing so hard, coffee just went all over the screen! This is coming from the guy who couldn’t beat a drugged up in lala land Paulo Fihlo…god this is the single funniest quote this year!

no doubt…I def want to try some of whatever he’s smoking

by McArthur on Feb 12, 2009 11:01 AM EST up reply actions

He got it from me McArthur. It also makes you think you’re a deer! And he smoked more than the recomended amount! Sonnen is a moron. Silva would f#%kin destroy this idiot in two rounds, if not sooner. Miaia IMO stands a much better chance if any…..

by allamerican on Feb 12, 2009 11:10 AM EST up reply actions

No.
Nope.

by Mikeybear2009 on Feb 12, 2009 11:19 AM EST up reply actions

oH! Wait he ment put together against Anderson..
mmm. Yeah i’m still gonna say no.

by Mikeybear2009 on Feb 12, 2009 11:20 AM EST up reply actions

I hope Silva gets a fight with Sonnen now just to make an example of him. Spend a round beating him up on the feet but letting him recover to get to the next round. Then spend round two like Couture on Pros Vs. Joes when he would just take guys down, slap subs on them and let them go. Silva could probably put a submission hold on every major joint in Sonnen’s body in one round. Then beat him senseless in round 3 to end it.

by PW on Feb 12, 2009 11:23 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I though he meant a handicap match too.

by Jeff on Feb 12, 2009 11:24 AM EST up reply actions

I’m gonna play devil’s advocate here and say that he might be a little ambitious, but they haven’t fought yet and the winner remains to be seen. I personally think they both stand a chance with anybody in the division. I’ll agree with allamerican though, Maia has a better shot – his BJJ is up there with the best in the world and probably the best in the division.

by Nokimono on Feb 12, 2009 12:10 PM EST up reply actions

Sonnen has no chance against Silva. Maia on the other hand definately has a shot.

I have predicted Maia to go all the way to the top for a long time. He could beat most of the people in his weightclass easily.

His toughest tests would be Hendo and Silva for sure. I would definately give Anderson the advantage but it would be be the closest fight that anyone could give him. Maia is just so creative on the ground. I certainly wouldn’t be surprised as some people on here if he did beat him.

I can’t wait for that fight and trust me it will happen.

Sonnen on the other hand is in dreamland, he is just trying to make himself look better than he is when he gets subbed quickly by Maia.

Maia wil beat Sonnen – by whatever sub he wants – Round 1

by Ca$z on Feb 12, 2009 12:16 PM EST up reply actions

sonnen is defo not better than silva….. he wouldnt even get out of the 1st round with him

maia has a chance if he can get it to the ground but silva would kill him on his feet and probably keep his distance

by ufcaddict on Feb 12, 2009 12:32 PM EST up reply actions

The crazy thing is that Sonnen actually believes this. He’s not trying to hype the fight, he actually believes that they’re both better than Anderson Silva. Even if other guys thought that, I don’t know how many would be so honest as to openly say it. But then again, this is the guy that said he hoped that Paulo Filho came into their rematch at 10% and had to be helped into the ring by his trainers so Sonnen could just “finish him off”. The sad thing is that’s what he got and he still couldn’t finish him.

by GregC on Feb 12, 2009 12:54 PM EST up reply actions

i think maybe sonnen would hold his own against silva for a round or 2 take in mind he would have to score takedowns and lay on him but hey going 2 rounds with silva is like 5 rounds with any other champion only 1 guy has gone passed the 2nd with the dude

by randy murders on Feb 12, 2009 12:56 PM EST up reply actions

randy thats cause the division isnt all that good. i mean only hendo and franklin are title material. hendo lost because he got clumsy and started swing for the bleachers. he could have beaten silva for a 5 round decision via lay n pray with one or two punches from gaurd each roound, but thats hendo’s problem he always just goes wild. you cant compare silva’s competition to george st pierres competition. welterweight division is on another level

by the heat on Feb 12, 2009 1:12 PM EST up reply actions

Now that The Crow is back abd Kang is in the UFC, the Division definately got better.
I see only Kang and Maia as threats to Silva.

by Hero-Of-Time on Feb 12, 2009 2:16 PM EST up reply actions

think of it this way. Silva said Filho was the best MW on the planet, better than himself. Chael beat Filho. therefore by Silva’s logic Chael is the best MW.

by josh on Feb 12, 2009 2:54 PM EST up reply actions

Very logical indeed josh. But I’d still go with allamerican’s prediction that Maia stands a better chance. Anderson always has had trouble with top-tier level BJJ guys. just check out Travis Lutter.

you mean the Travis Lutter he subbed? haha, yeah he had a ton of trouble with him!

God how can anyone stand this guy? He couldn’t finish a gassed out fighter having a mental breakdown yet A Silva he can smash? I can’t wait until he gets triangled.

alright guys, I’m off to bed, will check back in a few hours! as most of you know, we are planning a trip to an event in sept. I want to thank the 15 or so guys already planning on going. we have set a limit of 500 dollar seats. I looked, the most expensive seats for the ohio show are 450, so we’ll be getting good seats. I need an accurate head count! I know a few guys said maybe (roy, john) but haven’t contacted me, and I know some guys want to go too (stinky).. If interested, email me at
kevjack115@yahoo.com we’re doing everything diplomatically, and I need an accurate head count. This will be the last time I announce it until the announce the sept event!
.
One more thing, Stinky, you going to the strikeforce show in april? email me, my wife and I are going to go, we’re planning on getting ringside seats, we can all go together, maybe grab dinner. Get back at me!
peace guys!

by Syd[a.k.a."The Negation"] on Feb 12, 2009 3:21 PM EST up reply actions

Cote wouldnt let him take him down. Almeida woulda sumbitted Jason Macdonald less than a minute into the first.

by c-war on Feb 12, 2009 4:17 PM EST up reply actions

I cant believe we are validating this crap with responses, but I might as well join in! Forget anderson Silva, Sonnen couldnt last 1 round with THales Leites, andersons out matched opponent!

Chael Sonnen isnt even close to being a top 10 middleweight in the world or a top 10 UFC middleweight. Is this guys serious?

I cant believe he had the ballz to say this silly crap! The sad part is that we will never even get to see Anderson lay this fool the beating that he deserves. Chael isnt good enough to ever earn a shot against the spider, which makes this quote just laughable!

I have been away from the computer this hole day, and philQNY sent me a text about this when I was in class. I started hysterically laughing out loud in the middle of class. I seriously could not hold it in!

by john on Feb 12, 2009 7:01 PM EST up reply actions

nah! for me sonnen is just way too early for AS…but damian is definitely ripe for a shot at AS…he’s about 60-7-% chance of winning against AS..i agree with Caz that hendo would hav won if he sticks to his gameplan..hendo is just too pressured because of the hype of beating silva that convincingly because they market silva as the best p4p..

Sonnen is nowhere near the level Maia or Silva are. Maia, IMO, is the only one in the division that has the best chance of beating Silva. Sonnen is a retard and should just not speak. He sounds incoherent every time he speaks. I hope Maia puts him to sleep like he did to Herman.

Chael : If you did not get the Memo.. ANDERSON SILVA is the best MW on this side of the universe.

On Maia.. he is without a doubt one of.. or the best Ground fighter in the UFC 185 division.. but not " the ".. best fighter currently at 185 for the UFC.

SMART MOVE BY SONNEN. He is now (possibly) one fight away from a title shot. If (big if) he can somehow get by Maia, he’ll get a title shot because of these comments (or has a much better chance). Before he made these remarks, he was at least 2-3 wins (probably more) away from a title shot.

I don’t think he is even delusional enough to believe these comments that he made. I think he is trying to be a smart marketer. But then again maybe I am overestimating him.

by mikemick on Feb 12, 2009 12:02 PM EST reply actions

I havent figured out why the bout isn’t sonnen vs leites and Damien vs Silva Maia is a better contender to silva and deserves it Maia takes this fight much like what he did to herman by whatever he wants.

by tapsnapornapbjj on Feb 12, 2009 12:13 PM EST reply actions

I dunno about this fight. Maia has to get the fight to the ground first unless his striking has vastly improved. With the wrestling Sonnen has I think he will dictate where the fight takes place and I bet he won’t take it to the ground. He will win by UD with standup.

by rydinlow on Feb 12, 2009 12:24 PM EST reply actions

Doesn’t matter who the Spider fights. His stand up is untouchable and his BJJ is as good as anyones. I think Bisbing should be fighting him. The Spider likes to stand up and so does Bisbing, that would make an exciting fight.

Sonnen can say what he wants—-their respective records say otherwise. A sloppy win over a mentally-disturbed Paulo Filho doesn’t suddenly make Sonnen king of the MW division. He has nothing substantial in his entire career to support his claim of being the best, and neither does Maia. Potential does not equal actual, and Sonnen is not even potentially the best MW.

Stupid statement from a guy who needs a double portion of humble pie.

Almost every fighter thinks there the “uncrowned” champ. Talk to almost anyone in every division and they’ll think they have a great shot at dethroning the champ, its just the fighter mentality. There’s got to be someone out there that would give silva a run for his money, I hope silva doesn’t retire before that happens, too many one sided fights(slaughters) not battles.

How many times does Okami have to win a number 1 contenders fight to get the title shot?

WHAT A JOKE!

by markie on Feb 12, 2009 2:01 PM EST up reply actions

Okami is the number one contender and has the next fight against anderson and will get his ass kicked.

by McArthur on Feb 12, 2009 2:12 PM EST up reply actions

as much as i like maia, i want to see sonnen’s reaction when hes waking up after his fight with silva.

by rich on Feb 12, 2009 1:27 PM EST reply actions

Sonnen is just hyping his upcoming fight..

by johan-lofgren on Feb 12, 2009 1:44 PM EST reply actions

Yeah, and I could submit Fedor

by tsaunders on Feb 12, 2009 1:45 PM EST reply actions

A request, IF Sonnen gets a shot at Silva, can you have a camera on Sonnen’s face at every moment, especially when the cage door closes and locks. ahahahahahahahaa

Vince, who has he beat? How about Dan Henderson, one of the best out there and tougher than a $2 steak.

by The Slovak on Feb 12, 2009 1:49 PM EST reply actions

jajaja if sonnen is better than Anderson Silva then Kimbo Slice can take Randy Couture, man Sonnen must be on some good ass drugs jajaja

by Louie on Feb 12, 2009 1:59 PM EST reply actions

wtf. These guys all have such big egos.

I picked BJ in the BJ/GSP fight but I am beginning to like GSP more and more because he just keeps his mouth shut and fights 99% of the time.

Respect to GSP. Respect to Anderson.

No respect to idiots who haven’t done shit yet and could disappear off the planet in 12 months and no one would remember their name.

I’m an average dude with a little kickboxing experience and little bit of amateur wrestling and this would be like me saying that my 160 lb ass would destroy Anderson. I understand the need to feel your the best, if you don’t obviously you shouldn’t be there, but really! Anderson isn’t the best? Next Chael is going to challenge Brock/Mir winner I’m sure that it’s PCP he’s smoking hear it makes you feel invincible

BISBING BISBING BISBING BISBING!!!!!!!!!!1

by Stevo the great! on Feb 12, 2009 2:36 PM EST reply actions

Um Henderson or Bisping have better shots.
Anderson is too crafty and long for Maia to take him down and Shonnen, well it would be like Tyson Vs. Butterbean.
Wait, can someone book that?

by scissorfight on Feb 12, 2009 2:49 PM EST reply actions

lmao wow i totally hate him now…..what a fucking joke

by JG on Feb 12, 2009 3:01 PM EST reply actions

Do you people not get it. “Calling people out” is simply a tactic. A fairly tried and true device of getting yourself closer to a shot at the title. It’s an attempt to get people (whether legitimate or not) to at least mention your name in the same breath as the champ. I can’t blame Sonnen. He wants to move up, and this is one element of a strategy to do that.

Of course this is the easy part. The difficult part would be to actually pull off a victory. And I really don’t see that happening. While I think Chael’s superior wrestling would allow him to take Silva (& Maia) down on a consistent basis, Sonnen is just too prone to submissions and it would be a fairly quick end.

by Ernesto on Feb 12, 2009 4:38 PM EST reply actions

yeah thats a joke and everyone on this page knows it. Until Anderson gets old and over the hill and loses that speed, reaction time, bruce lee skills etc Nobody is going to stop him. He has put away some of the best fighters in the world and he did it either effortlessly or he beat them at their own game.

by lurkin&murkin on Feb 12, 2009 4:44 PM EST reply actions

Wow, I like Demian Maia a lot but now I kinda want Chael to win just to get a shot at Silva. See what happens…

by shitleTOT.com on Feb 12, 2009 5:13 PM EST reply actions

Maia would sub A Silva in the 1st rnd. A Silva’s skillz on the ground aren’t even close too that of D Maia. Maia would somehow pull A Silva to the ground and sub him (rnc).

by Jason T on Feb 12, 2009 5:59 PM EST reply actions

“Maia would somehow pull him to the ground” lol you cant even think of a plausible way of maia getting him down, anderson would and will kill him when they fight.

by LG on Feb 12, 2009 6:04 PM EST up reply actions

T.Lutter pretty much took Silva down at will. If A.Silva goes anywhere near the ground it will be a short night for both fighters(Maia sub win).

by Jason T on Feb 12, 2009 8:02 PM EST up reply actions

Silva is so dominate in the stand up that his ground skills are not payed attention to. Remember this assassin is a BJJ black belt with deadly skills. He took out Lutter who at the time was well known for his BJJ skills, he submitted Hendo via RNC an olympic greco wrestler who is more than a hand full on the ground. Maia no doubt has killer skills, but hasn’t faced anyone near the Spiders ability. I don’t think we’ve even seen the best of Silva yet, because those who were suppose to take him out haven’t been a challange.

by The Juice! on Feb 12, 2009 6:32 PM EST reply actions

Sonnen must be practicing the Flying Scissor Heel Hook thinking that its going to work because his last name rhymes with the last guy who beat silva legitly Ryo Chonan. I really want some of what ever he is smoken.

by Tyson Lee Harris on Feb 12, 2009 9:40 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t know about Chael, but I strongly believe Damien would take the title from Anderson.

by MMAWarehouse on Feb 13, 2009 12:19 AM EST reply actions

Word! Maia is the REAL DEAL

by Jason T on Feb 13, 2009 8:02 PM EST up reply actions

The reason sonnan says this is because silva is best friends with filho and he is just trying to get anderson to get a little angry at the comments…he wants the shot at the belt as he thinks he is the LAST REAL WEC champ…guy will get tooled….babalu made him cry, jermy horn made him cry and filho made him cry in the first fight on accident..
