UFC 95 BLOW-BY-BLOW LIVE MAIN CARD COMMENTARY:
Druby here
Diego Sanchez vs. Joe Stevenson (155-pound limit)
Round one: Sanchez with a jab, then hes stifled on a single leg takedown. Joe daddy with two punches on the way up. Sanchez with a combo and Stevenson with a stiff counter punch. Jab from Joe Daddy. Soft right from Diego. Good right from Sanchez hits its mark. Stevenson with a left and Sanchez with a counter jab. Diego with a flurry and then a knee to the body. Head kick by Sanchez blocked, but he then lands a uppercut. Thats the bell, uneventful round but I think Sanchez comes out on top in that one 10-9.
Round two: Short left from Diego stuns Joe Daddy. Diego misses a flying knee, and Stevenson goes for a double leg take down, but is stuffed and Diego gets the back briefly. Stevenson shakes off Diego from his back quickly. Stevenson goes for a standing guillontine but Diego with a slam to get him off. Daddy back to his feet and lands two good rights. Sanchez answers with a good left. Nice right from Diego. Both fighters exchange and then Diego lands a body shot. Sanchez with two solid uppercuts back to back.Sanchez tries for two head kicks but Stevenson blocks them both, thats the round. Still nothing too exciting up to this point id say Diego won this round 10-9.
Round three: Both guys come out throwing but they dont land anything of significance. Sanchez lands a glancing right that doesnt do much. Sanchez with a knee to the body stopping Stevenson in his tracks. Sanchez with a body kick and then both fighters throwing some punches none of them doing any damage what so ever. Sanchez shoots for a double but Stevenson stifles it. Stevenson lands a good right. Two weak rights land for Diego but dont do much. Diego goes for a looping left but Stevenson stops him with a counter right. Sanchez shoots but Joe Daddy stuffs it and lands some weak knees to the body before they seperate. Joe Daddy misses a right and Sanchez answers with a left. Both guys swinging wild to close out the round and Stevenson lands a good left and thats the bell. Overall a dissappointing fight, id say Sanchez will get the win but both fighters were far from impressive in this one.
Final result: Diego Sanchez defeats Joe Stevenson via unanimous decision
-end-
Dan Hardy vs. Rory Markham (170-pound limit)
Round one: Inside leg kick from Hardy. Leg kick from Hardy. NIce left from Markham. Jab from Hardy. HUGE left from Hardy drops Markham COLD and then he finishes with a HUGE right. What a big KO, great Knockout.

Body punch from Nate and then a double leg take down from Nate, Gouveia goes for a sloppy guillotine. Nate slips out. Full guard from Wilson. Nate on top now and a BIG right from Nate and knee to the body. Thats the bell, Nate wins that round 10-9.
Round two: Leg kick from Nate. Leg kick from Gouveia. Nate just misses a big overhand right. Good right from Wilson but Nate lands a BIG knee. Big right from Nate and two BIG knees to the body from Nate, their clinched up against the fence. Big right from Wilson Gouveia and then a left but Nate grabs the back and goes for a choke. Wilson slips out and is now on bottom with full guard. Elbows from the top by Nate. Elbow from the bottom from Gouveia. Back to the feet and Nate with a standing guillotine. Gouveia slips out. Head kick from Nate. Nate with a knee from the clinch. Leg kick from Nate. BIG right hand and two BIG knees and some vicious rights and Gouveia is hurt bad!!!! Knee and right from Nate to close the round, Nate dominates that round 10-9 easy.
Round three: Nice right from Wilson. Nate misses a HUGE right and Gouveia lands a solid combo. Nate has the back and hes kneeing the thigh and using some foot stomps. Nate holding onto the body clinch and looking for a suplex. Nice combo from Gouveia. HUGE flying knee and then a BIG spinning backfist two head kicks and some finishing punches and thats the fight!!! WOW an amazing finish by Nate once again he looks extremely impressive.
Final result: Nate Marquardt defeats Wilson Gouveia via TKO (Strikes) Round 3
-end-
Demian Maia vs. Chael Sonnen (185-pound limit)
Round one: Maia with a body kick and Sonnen catches it. Sonnen with a combo. Maia with a good straight left. Nice right hook from Maia and now he shoots for a double leg, and immediately pulls guard. Nice punch from Maia from the bottom and Sonnen is looking to posture up and do some ground and pound damage. Nice left right combo from Maia and then he gets a body lock take down and lets Sonnen sweep himself right into a triangle choke. Thats it its all over Maia impressive ju jitsu once again. Great submission by Maia.
Final result: Demian Maia defeats Chael Sonnen via Submission (Triangle Choke) Round 1
-end-
Josh Koscheck vs. Paulo Thiago (170-pound limit)
Round one: The pair touch gloves and are feeling one another out -- not much action in the opening minute. Koscheck misses with a big looping right. Thiago goes for a clinch, but Koscheck defends. The crowd begins to reign down the boos. Koscheck buzzes the nose of the Brazilian with another huge right. Koscheck is stawking the jiu-jitsu player and looking for the knockout ... he appears to be getting comfortable. Koscheck misses with another wild right, but nails Thiago with a head kick that backs him up against the fence. Koscheck goes in for a jab and walks into a huge uppercut, which Thiago follows with a left that floors him. Koscheck is stunned and Rogan says his eyes rolled back in his head. The referee steps in before Thiago can go in for the total kill. Koscheck gets to his feet quickly, protesting the stoppage. He thinks it was early, but it doesn't matter. Thiago gets the unlikely knockout win. Not bad for a jiu-jitsu guy.
Final result: Paulo Thiago defeats Josh Koscheck via knockout in round one
-end-

I am actually looking forward to this card, but mostly for the Maia/Sonnen fight. I am really surprised that the UFC hasn’t mentioned a word about this fight in the few commercials I have seen for the event.

this fight card is better than the ohio card.
why is dos santos on the under card after beating werdum on ppv main card with a KO!
Why isn’t Maia fighting Nate the great? Nate kinda moved down on fighter rankings (just a lil’)
Maia/Sonnen should be a good one, i wish Filho woulda gave his all against Sonnen.
Sanchez should win this i just hope he isn’t cutting to much weight.

cant wait to see kos again… i have to say i’m a self-admitted fan of this guy since the show… he seems to improve dramatically every time he fights
looking forward to the maia/sonnen fight and the marquardt/gouveia fight the most to see how the MW division pans out
i think the winner of marquardt/gouveia fight will get the next shot at silva
also looking forward to sanchez pounding this guys face into the mat and eventually submitting him

The show was already broadcast in Canada on Rogers Sportsnet at 3:00 PM EST. I won’t spoil it for all you Yanks that haven’t seen it yet so all I’ll say that it was one of the better UFC events I’ve seen in a while! Great stuff!

Diego GnP in the second
Marquardt TKO in the second
Demian Knee bar in the first
Koscheck GnP in the third
I’m pretty happy because if all of these guys get another win, they’ll be pretty close to a title fight. I’m really hoping that Diego lays a serious beating on Joe. It’ll help Joe to realize he needs to get some better stand up.

Good solid card for free and with the past 3-4 UFC’s I can’t complain even though UFC 96 may be the worse card ever on a ppv.
Diego
Wilson
Maia
Kos

Hope Santos shows up and gets another KO. Would be great to see him go against another good striker like Kongo.

Mania or Jesse: You guys ever thought about having a contest to where someone that visits the site gets a chance to win a trip to a UFC event? Domestic of course.
by El Mexicutioner, formerly The Mexicutioner on Feb 12, 2009 8:54 AM EST reply actions
They don’t even get paid to do this… if they do it couldn’t be very much. Your really asking them to fund out of their own pockets a trip for one of the whiny fans on this site.
by Cogito Ergo Sum on Feb 12, 2009 10:08 AM EST up reply actions
Whiny fans? I wasnt asking them for a trip for you. I suppose you have never heard the word sponsor? It was just a thought. You must be an emo or something that wallows in self pity and has the saddest outlook on life in general. How sad.
by El Mexicutioner, formerly The Mexicutioner on Feb 12, 2009 10:15 AM EST up reply actions
Haha I’m sorry I didn’t mean it to offend you. I was just assuming that a whiny fan would win. Its true they could get sponsors to do such a thing but thats harder to accomplish too and I’m just pointing out the obvious.

DOES ANYONE KNOW ANY SOLID INFORMATION ON PAULO THIAGO???? other than his 2 minute your tube highlight and his record. 10-0, 7 subs, 1 TKO. From what i seen in the highlight he will be NO MATCH for Kos. Kos should run thruough him easier than a hot knife through butter. Kos opened and has been -450. I think that risking $90 to win $20 is guaranteed money. Does ANYONE have ANYTHING on Paulo Thiago to prove otherwise?
In his highlight he picks up and kinda slams a couple of scrawny cats from Brazil that don’t know how to wrestle. Kos is going to steamroll him.
PLEASE, someone make me feel less confident about my hated Kos!!!!!
by ViolentMike on Feb 12, 2009 9:16 AM EST reply actions
You already know that Kos is going to stump him, why do you keep asking someone to disprove you? If anyone did say it, they’d be lying to you. Kos should have this fight easy but as you know in MMA we never know until the bell rings.
by Cogito Ergo Sum on Feb 12, 2009 10:10 AM EST up reply actions
I’m asking if anyone has any solid info on Paulo THiago, because I do not, and neither do you.
If he was going to “stump him” for sure, he would be a -800 favorite, not -450….
by ViolentMike on Feb 12, 2009 11:30 AM EST up reply actions
What the fuck is with Junior Dos Santos on the undercard!! He just viciously ko’d fabricio verdum out of the UFC, I want to see him fight. Put him in for rory markham/dan hardy anyday.
by snow87 on Feb 12, 2009 9:22 AM EST reply actions
NO definitly not…. Dan hardy vs markham is a much better fight..
by mike22 on Feb 12, 2009 2:21 PM EST up reply actions
What the hell is with junior Dos Santos on the udnercard? He crushed Fabricio, a very good fighter, he definitely deserved main card status. Evespecailly over dan hardy/rory markham
by snow87 on Feb 12, 2009 9:24 AM EST reply actions
Junior to the main card!! he’s one of the HW’S that’s worth seeing throw down.. too many guys from the lighter weight classes on this card!
by RoB on Feb 12, 2009 11:05 AM EST reply actions
i love the fact that a guy like dos santos knocks out a guy with no stand up “werdum” and everyone jumps on the dos santos bandwagon
by bryant on Feb 12, 2009 12:41 PM EST reply actions
Werdum “no standup”…Bryant, common, did you not see the Werdum/Gonzaga fight? He dropped Gonzaga and then TKO’d him decisively…Id say hes got some decent standup. And not to mention the fact that Werdum is a seasoned veteran who fought in Pride for years id say beating him was quite the accomplishment for a UFC newcomer like Dos Santos.
by snow87 on Feb 12, 2009 2:02 PM EST up reply actions
My picks:
Sanchez
Hardy
Marquardt
Maia
thiago
Etim
Dos Santos
Paul Kelly

Sonnen on an UFC card? And so soon after beating Paulo to a pulp on a WEC card? What’s Dana White’s & Joe Silva’s thinking to put him on this card when he should be getting a chance for the belt he deserves? I see that other WEC people will be on UFC cards soon, like that poser Condit & former LHW champ Brian Stahn… could make for interesting fights.
by Diesel on Feb 21, 2009 9:15 PM EST reply actions
That one kid who worked Stahn looked sharp at 205.
by Bennie Blanco from the Bronx on Feb 21, 2009 11:38 PM EST up reply actions
See, this is why you don’t put nobodies against good people!!! Koscheck never shouldve fought someone like Thiago. Kos got caught…thats it. He lost, since he lost to a nobody, the UFC has hurt itself by taking down a good fighter. Kos now has to rebuild, when he never shouldve fought a shit guy in the 1st place.
by ryan on Feb 21, 2009 9:28 PM EST reply actions
Thats how they build kos up, put him against nobodies. They have given him the shots against the upper class fighters and he has got his ass kicked by gsp and alves. You can’t cry because your boy got knocked the hell out. He took the fight and shit happens and might i say damn that looked good on that curly haired douche, back of the welterweight line for you asshole.
by LG on Feb 21, 2009 10:55 PM EST up reply actions
Kos took alves on short notice. And he fared well against GSP, it wasn’t a beating like BJ took.
by Bennie Blanco from the Bronx on Feb 21, 2009 11:34 PM EST up reply actions
Kos isn’t 30 pounds lighter than gsp like bj is.

I am very impressed by all of maia’s performances. I honestly think, he is the only threat to Silva’s title.
by jay on Feb 21, 2009 9:47 PM EST reply actions
yeah, he is super dangerous. but can he get silva down?

Diego is the biggest douchebag in MMA, and Joe Rogan was giving biased commentary that played up Diego’s action while down playing Joe’s. Someone should ask him how Diego’s ass tastes because of how he was so far up it tonight. Diego didn’t deserve a win… and it’s total bullshit how they said he began the weight cut at 190, made 155 by weigh in yesterday, and was 170 for the fight tonight. They should have weigh ins at noon the same day of the fight so pussies like Diego can’t get an unfair weight advantage by bulking back up for fight night.
by Diesel on Feb 22, 2009 12:36 AM EST reply actions
Oh my god, the main event sucked so bad and both such great fighters. Other matches were good though.
by Iceman on Feb 22, 2009 4:53 AM EST reply actions
Looks like KOS may be regretting doing any research on Paulo Thiago. That’s what arrogance will get you, KO’d.
