UFC Quick Quote: Frank Mir vs. Brock Lesnar 2 to be 'similar to the first'

"Technically, Lesnar has the ‘real’ belt and he can claim that, I’m not bothered. But I have accomplished more than him on the road to the title.... I see the rematch being a similar fight to the first. He will look to overwhelm me quickly but it’s hard to win fights by just overpowering someone. He has the size and his strength is immense but his technical ability is nowhere near mine."
-- Interim heavyweight champion Frank Mir tells Mirror.co.uk that he expects his rematch against Brock Lesnar at UFC 98 to end in similar fashion -- with his hand raised in victory after a submission. Mir tapped Lesnar with a kneebar back at UFC 81: "Breaking Point" in Feb. 2008. Lesnar went on to stop Randy Couture later that same year to capture the division title. Meanwhile, Mir scored a technical knockout win over Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira at UFC 92 in December to claim the interim title. The two will square off to declare an undisputed champion on the next big blockbuster show for the promotion in May.

NO way Stink! Brock isnt even going to the ground with Mir. He is going to use his monkey reach to beat Mir senseless in the stand up and clinch. Mir’s new toy, that BS 3 punch combo of his isnt going to work. Say Mir’s striking improves a little more come May, whats he going to have in his Arsenal? that tired ol 3 hit combo and then another punch, kick combo at best!
Unless Brock has a glass Jaw, which I doubt….mir is going to get KTFO!!!!

NO way Stink! THis fight aint going to the ground! brock is going to keep it standing, beat Mir up in the clinch with brutal Knees…and then he will use his Monkey Reach to pick Mir apart….ending in a TKO, 1st or early 2nd round!

whatever drugs you’re on John, I want some. Just because Mir beat Nog., don’t root against him. Mir will outclass Lesner where ever the fight goes!

I like Mir, I think he’s a funny guy and I don’t like Lesnar…but to be honest, how does Mir win this fight? If Lesnar stands, lesnar probably wins. Mir could pull gaurd and try to submit him but the chances are slim.

I don’t think Brock will make the same mistake again, but Mir’s stand up against Minotaro was awesome.. Brock can only punch and bull storm people so his game his limited.. Randy man handle him in his fight just Brock’s gorilla fists made it hard for Randy to move out, and Mir would have beaten Randy..

was Mir’s stand up against Nogueira awesome? or did NOgueira just look like a zombie? Props to Nog for the win, but Nog’s shape should be considered! I am just saying KO’ing NOgueira the way he looked that night does not equate into Mir Ko’ing Lesnar!

Kevin: 2 questions for you, stink and everyone else. NOt attacking you guys, just curious to get some feed back on these questions.
- Can Mir beat Lesnar in a stand up fight?
Brock just Ko’ed Couture, something that I give Mir NO CHANCE IN HELL OF DOING!!!! Unless Brock has a glass Jaw, which I doubt….I cant see Mir winning the striking or the clinch battles.
- If Mir is losing the stand up, can he take Brock Down?
I really dont see this happening. I guess theoretically Mir could pull guard and try to drag brock down to the mat, but I think Brock is strong enough to Keep Mir from dragging him down, or turning it into a slam.
Just my 2 thoughts. Curious to get some feedback from you guys on those 2 questions. Thanks, and this is why I love this site!

The only Frank Mir fight I really wanted to see will never happen now. I wanted to see Mir vs. Werdum but the UFC is just gay, and they cut him!
by john on Feb 11, 2009 11:28 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
yes, he can beat brock in the stand up…quite easily I think, which nullifies question 2, because Brock will take him down and then get submitted. You really got “Brock is a world class striker” from his match with Couture? If thats the case, I don’t know what fight you were watching, Randy got caught, plain and simple, he saw the punch coming and moved a bit slow, mir is in his prime, not 45!
by kevin on Feb 11, 2009 11:30 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
i think mir is better than you give him credit for john but he is and was over hyped since he beat roberto traven with an armbar. and the win over a zombie version of nog hypes hi even more. traven has great bjj but punch him in the face and he aint so great and thats what mir did. mir’s jits isnt even that good. not on the level of werdum or nog. and i feel it will be a little much to ask for frank to sub brock again even if he does get it to the ground. so i think brock takes it. oh and right on about alves-karo there in the other thread john boy. gotta agree with your statement

thank you sir!
I am pissed that the UFC cut Werdum. THe only fight I ever actuually wanted to see Mir in was against Werdum, so that Mir would get outclassed on his “bread and butter” ground game!

no hate about it kevin, mir is losing.has mir improved-yes but brock has improved even more.he almost killed mir in the first fight this time he does, and i don’t even like brock i would probally prefer mir to win but he won’t.
by roy on Feb 11, 2009 11:42 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
What some of you are missing is that Mir has a very distinct advantage that none of Brocks opponents had. Mir knows exactly how fast and how strong Brock really is. That is invaluable knowledge to have. It’s one thing to estimate something and another thing to have experienced it 1st hand. IMO that is the deciding factor because his strength and his speed are his bread & butter.
by Machine on Feb 11, 2009 12:48 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Kevin: I dont think that the Brock-ness Monster is a world class striker at all… I think Mir’s stand up is Garbage and that he doesnt like to get hit in the face. He out struck a mummified version of Big Nog, and who else? Wes Sims? I think Brock has tons of room for improvement in the stand up, but I think he is the tougher man, has the longer reach….and will get the edge in the stand up! Mir has 1 combo for crying out load!
Question: Do you ever think that Mir could finish Couture standing?
MMA math doesnt mean anything, but I just think the kind of power, speed and reach that Brock has, masks many of the holes in his striking. Mir doesnt have that luxury.
Machine: its a good point, but not really! Brock only threw one punch against Mir, and the rest of the fight was spent with Brock raining down Hammer fists until Mir grabbed a hold of his leg. I dont think its enough to really gauge the speed and reach of Brock, but Yes he has already tasted the power….dont know if thats an advantage or just a scar4y thought!

FRANK MIR in the 1st by DDT.
Seriously though, what could possibly be Mir’s plan to limit damage on the ground so it doesn’t get stopped in the 1st.
God I hope Mir has a legit plan and isn’t just hyping the fight.

Dont like Brock all that much, I just HATE MIR with a passion. The UFC doesnt have many Heavyweights worth rooting for over brock. If Brock were in Affliction I would root against him all the time, but the UFC HW division is just TRASH!!! I hate it! The future looks decent with rising stars like cain, dos Santos and Carwin, but right now Who can I really root for against Brock? Probably only Nogueira!
Where as affliction has fighters like fedor, Arlovski, Werdum and Barnett who I am a big fan of!

Brock-ness Monster . . . I like it. And Brock has probably been doing nothing more than training stand-up and submission defense. He’s not going to step into a leg lock again. Brock by battering Mir around the ring in the first and finishing him off in the second.

Not that I am a big fan of Brock, I just HATE Mir maybe even more so than I hate FORREST!!! Mir reminds me of a smug, ego-maniac, bugs bunny looking mOfo! I think he is just an over rated creation of the UFC marketing machine! Therefore, I hope Brock takes his F’in Head off!
I am more in AWE of Brocks physical and athletic capabilities. Also, the UFC HW division BLOWS, so I dont have many other fighters to root for over Brock with the exception of a TRUE Ol’ G…. Nogueira!

Stink: Do u think that Mir can win a stand up fight against Brock? I sure dont! Do you think that Mir can take Brock down? I dont think so! Not trying to sound condescending, but I am curious to hear your input about those 2 questions.
Dave: Not saying that your favorites aren’t good…I just think they are basically “silver spoon” UFC fighters! I think they have had an easier path than most, but to their credit they have capitalized. Still I am not impressed with many of their big wins!
Question: Why has Frank Mir NEVER competed in Ahbu Dahbi?

That being said John, back to your Affliction comment I definitly think Mir could take almost any heavyweight in Affliction, I think he would beat Yvel, Rothwell, hes already beaten Sylvia, I think he could beat arlovski believe it or not, I also think he matches up better with barnett than most people think, the only one i know he couldnt take is Fedor, and as far as silver spoon fighters I think brock takes the cake for that one.
by Dave on Feb 11, 2009 11:59 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
mir could not beat aa or barnett, yeah he should be able to beat gilbert because gilbert dosn’t have much of a ground game bur he is no where near there top 3 guys aa,barnett, and fedor.

no i definitly think he could beat arlovski, the more i watch him fight, the less i believe in him, im still a fan but i think Mir could beat him, not saying andre couldnt beat him too but i also think he matches up well against barnett, he would definitly have to hone his striking, but ive always said about barnett if you can avoid getting smothered you can do pretty well, just my opinion
by Dave on Feb 11, 2009 1:14 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
i see what your saying dave but mir has never been impressive to me, yeah he beat nog but nog looked fat and like shit so does that say alot?he beat a green lesnar barely and beat sylvia and thats about it.i would bet you never see him beat another top guy again but we will se after the lesnar fight how good he is or isn’t.
by roy on Feb 11, 2009 2:59 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Mir cant even beat Werdum! When Werdum isnt FAT, he would not only out strike Mir standing, but he would out class him on the ground!
AA takedown defense is too good for Mir to beat him. U think mir can stand with Arlovski?
Mir isnt getting Barnet to the ground either and Barnett is an amazing grappler anyway! So, NO he cant beat Barnett
and we wont even talk about Fedor!
Yeah, mir could beat Yvel, Big Country and Rothwell, but so what?
Speaking of Affliction. I dont think Mir could beat Babalu! hahaha

of coarse I will bet against Mir again!
Beating brock is nothing special either. The guy has 4 fights! In the future he will be amazing but he still has many holes.
I dont think MIr can beat him again. Yes he costs me lots of money, but I NEVER liked him! I always thought he was a crappy fighter who made a career out of smoke and mirrors using him breaking Sylvia’s arm…..Bug deal, most blue belts can do that to sylvia!
I hate Forrest, but I see his skills! Mir, I dont think he is very good at anything besides ju jitsu! That is honestly how I feel!

Mir was surprised in the first fight by Brocks explosiveness and power, I don’t see that happening again here. Could actually make for a good fight. I’m torn between an all out assault by Brock and the possiblity of Mir using footwork to pick Brock apart a bit and avoid the bullrush takedowns. Win win either way. I like em both and don’t care who wins. Odds are Brock mauls him
by Crowls on Feb 11, 2009 2:00 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Someone above speculated that Brock is training nothing but stand-up. At the same time one’s got to think that Mir is training TDD and standing up after being taken down along with his new-found stand-up game. Mir knows 1st hand what Brocks physical capabilities are. If he can nullify the wrestling and Brock can defend the BJJ, we will find out who’s the better striker. Only problem is even if Lesnar is inferior on his feet, everyone lands at least one punch even in a losing effort, right? Brock’s size affords him extra power in his strikes. Which means he’s got a punchers chance (which I dont like).

Brock should keep this one standing and keep hitting Frank with bombs. If he goes down wait for him to get back up and repeat whereas Frank may only have his submissions and will need it to go to the ground more than Brock.
Personally I don’t like any of these egomaniacs but I’d prefer if Frank won cos he deserves to be there more IMO. When are the UFC going to get a real HW champ.

Agreed, we managed to meet almost everyone in Dudlin just by finding their hotel.
As far as i’m aware not many tickets have been sold. Put it this way, the cheap seats are always the first to sell and yesterday you could still get 4 cheap seats sat together via Ticketmaster.
So if Ticketmaster still have them available i’d guess there no-where near selling out. On the plus side, this does mean you’ll be able to get down the front for photos etc.

You know I wonder how many of the people on here cheering for Brock were doing the same in his fight against Couture?. You gotta love the sour grapes and bitterness of some fans after Nog gets smashed into oblivion all of a sudden they are the number 1 Brock fans. Whatever, Mir is simply too good at submissions for Lesnar to deal with at the momment he will get caught in any on multiple subs by Mir and tapped again.

Mir is badass, no doubt. But i think Brock has improved alot and his win over Couture is more impressive, IMO, than Frank’s over NOG.
I see the fight going similar to the first except Brock doesn’t get a BS stand-up and point reduction and takes home the undisputed HW Belt.
Brock via Donky Kong Hammer Fists round 2.
Couture vs NOG needs to happen.

I don’t see it as more impressive. Randy was working brock until he got caught, it happens. I would still take
Randy in a rematch. I see where you are coming from though bc that was not the Nog we are used to seeing.

I think Mir will take this one. Brock has the potential to be a future great champion but he needs to learn the sport more. I think he is being set up for a fall like Kimbo did. Not to say the he’s comparable to Kimbo, he’s just in the same situation as Kimbo was. He’s head and shoulder’s above Kimbo. I just think that Mir’s experience and better technical skills in all facets of the sport is too much of an advantage. I also really don’t like Brock and what he brings to MMA. War MIR!!!

Mir going to win via TKO first round.
by Khaos_Warrior on Feb 11, 2009 3:37 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Mir was lucky to win the first fight because of Lesners’ inexperience. Mir was consatantly going for that leg the whole fight and Lesner still let him grab it in the end, that shows how inexperienced he was. That will not happen the seond time. Mir will not see the end of the second round. And if you Mir fans are thinking that Lesner will just stand there like Nog did and do nothing except be a punching bag, then you are in for a rude awakening. I am not a Lesner fan but I have always thought Mir was overrated and him beating a Nog that stood there and did absolutely nothing hasn’t changed that. Nog had got steadily worse since his Herring fight and was actually losing to Tim Sylvia. Randy, Carwin, Gonzaga and Kongo would all beat Mir. He is no way a top 5 figher, and will soon disappear down the Rankings after Lesner beats him.
by Ade on Feb 11, 2009 4:06 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I disagree and think Mir takes any of the four out. Randy (old), Carwin (unproven against top level opponents), Gonzaga (inconsistent and ground game not at Mirs level), Kongo (poor ground game).
by MMAGreen on Feb 11, 2009 8:26 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
And you believe this because of his lucky win over Lesner or because of his mediocre stand up which Nog made look better that it actally was. Kongo may have a poor ground game, but his takedown defence has vastly improved. He would knock out Mir before he had a chance to try and take him down. I doubt he would be able to take Kongo down anyway. I have seen nothing from Mir to show me that he is top 5, and the poor performances of his opponents will not fool me into thinking otherwise, like it seems to have most of his new fans.

murr is right. I say he wins 3 mins into 1st round by arm bar
by TRIKZ on Feb 11, 2009 3:57 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
sorry but Mir has no chance. Brock continues to learn and is just too big and strong. Plus Mir is a jerk. Maybe we will see our first ending by death.
by Brian "CLAY "THE TICK" GUIDA on Feb 11, 2009 6:52 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
the only way Mir wins is with a knee bar or leg lock…basically any below the waist submission…he wont be able to armbar Brock, he has said that himself that his arms are too big and strong to armbar.

I see Mir winning via submission again…
I’d say the one He did to Tank Abbot.

I am really hoping it ends the same way, but quicker. I want Mir to have the belt and Brock to drop back and take on Carwin/Gonzaga or Cain V.

Breaking News***
Jason “Mayhem” Miller will fight Phil Baroni in March. The fight will take place in Honolulu, Hawaii. This will be the first even of the new promotion called “Kingdom MMA”. It is owned by TJ Thompson, who was the owner of ICON Sport, but the company folded when the demise of ProElite happened. I’m excited to see Miller back.

The question is had Brock learned enough to avoid the submissions. Not necessarily the escapes or counters just what positions to see developing and move. Like when a leg gets in front of your shoulder in guard … get the hell out a triangle or armbar are coming

Frank got this again. Lesnar will never beat him.
by Jimmy on Feb 11, 2009 7:49 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Frank Mir is his own biggest fan, I have lost a lot of respect for him after saying that there’s only a few people in the world that can beat him in a fight. For f**k’s sake, do your talking in the cage, stop running your mouth every 10 minutes about what an amazing guy you are…

Brock showed good cardio againgst Herring, probably better then anything Mir has shown in terms of cardio. Mir always gasses, again just like BJ Penn, hearing a fighter tell me that he has improved cardio is not enough… he has to go 5 rounds to prove it. Mir says he trains better now but I still have to see him go hard in a fight first… that being said I like Mir again in this fight.
by Robert(1) on Feb 11, 2009 9:15 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
It doesn’t get out of the first round, Lesnar either destroys him or does something stupid and Mir grabs and arm or leg/ankle

Frank is starting to sound like a out and out idiot. Sure he may win the fight. But why does he think the same Brock Lesnar will show up. He fought Brock in his 2nd fight, and many people think Brock would have won if not for a dubious call by Steve Mazzagati. And he got a gift against Big Nog, cause he was fighting Nog, when he had a staph infection. And if you look at Brock, he is greatly improving fight by fight. Its a pickem fight, why does this guy act like this.

Off topic but I just got a nice chuckle watching Inside MMA top 10 rankings. They put Mike Brown ahead of Machida

I like Frank but kinda hope Brock smashes him in this one. He comes back wins 2 fights and is talking like he is the king. Either way I cant wait to see this fight. Mir by sub or Brock by smashing.

id give the advantage to lesnar. the way mir beat nog is the blueprint for how lesnar is going to beat mir. play it safe and keep it on the feet at all costs.

I like both fighters and think is a tough fight to call, I think if Mir wins it will be something like the first (able to weather the storm) and if Lesnar wins it will also be something like the first but this time Frank wont be able to weather the storm.
I a side not Lesnar looks mean in the pic! If I where him I would have that hanging on my wall!

I liked brock in wwe I was still a kid then
Now he’s in ufc I’m still a fan
I ordered dynimite when he made debut
And I saw potential then
I still wish he fought man choi
I like randy too and wanna see rematch but if he’s still gonna train with randy its prob unlikely
Mirs cool too I wanted him to beat nog but his talk is worse than brocks
About brock breaking under pressure I doubt
Come on he did wrestlemania
by phenomenal angel on Feb 11, 2009 12:45 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Brock will try and stand and bang. Mir will do the same becasue it is so hard to take Brock down. So what will happen? Mir will use kicks and temp Brock into a takedown then band submission.
by hatteras on Feb 11, 2009 1:36 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Remember that Randy and Herring were very favorable match-ups for Brock. Both have no submission game to speak of and that is and always will be Lesnar’s biggest weakness.
Brock took away Randy’s biggest strength in his wrestling. He also didn’t let Heath work his stand-up much by dumping him on his ass.
Against Mir or any other guy with top notch jits, Lesnar will always be threatened by the fight going to the ground. That said, Brock has a ton of power and has proved his striking game is no joke. He can pound out Mir, but I see him as a sizable underdog in this fight.

Brock wins this fight. Let Stinky throw away more money. I’d flip a coin before I’d trust his picks.

Brock just really needs to work his sub defense like crazy, get a different ref than he had the first time and repeat, this time without the dumb mistake.

For Lesnar to win, he must use the same gameplan as Mir used against Nog in december.
by bill on Feb 18, 2009 5:39 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Not exactly, Lesnar wins if he comes out strong like he did in their first encounter. If you have watched Lesnars workout routine you can see he has the stamina to go all out for 5 minutes. If Lesnar stays back and waits like he did against Randy, Mir will wear him down and sub him. Either way I am looking forward to seeing a truly explosive match.

…there’s so many Frank-haters here. FORTUNATELY, there’s one who respects Mir; FEDOR. In an interview before he fought AA, the no.1 P4P in the world ranked Frank Mir in the top 3 in the world’s HW.
…as for the second fight against Brock, I think Lesnar will keep it on the feet which I think will test Mir’s improved striking. (but I hope Frank uses his karate background ala Machida) As a Mir fan, I must admit it will be hard for Frank to trade punches with Brock considering that beast’s huge fist. And maybe Brock improves on BJJ defense.
…I honestly believe Mir cannot take him down on a wrestling take-down BUT if I am Mir, I will shoot not for the legs but near the foot and subsequently put Brock off-balanced then go for a Tank Abott heel/foot lock.

concerning mister Brock Lesnar
Brock lesnar is a fool. He thinks he can whoop fedor. HAHAHAHAHA that is funny. He thinks he can whoop Frank mir. Already had the chance and coudn’t pull it off. ok so his record is 3-1 and he is the champ. this dude is all hype. why can’t anyone see that. he knocked out one tough guy (Randy couture) and that’s because he is bordering on elderly. i love randy couture but he’s too old. everyone who fights brock lesnar is intimidated by his size. big deal. his sportsmanship is totally f-ed and his attitude sucks. he failed at every other avenue he has tried in life and he will fail in this one because you know what brock? NOBODY CARES HOW MUCH MUSCLE YOU HAVE!!!!!!! you are not trying to impress a room full of BS 6 year old WWE fans. this is a real sport with real skills involved and you will not be able to rest on intimidation alone. Kimbo slice had to figure that out the hard way and you will too.
by rilly on Mar 4, 2009 11:41 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
I see all the talk about lesnar not makeing the same mistake but what people dont understand is that he is a young fighter and he dont have to make the same mistake. If he makes any mistake his ass will belong to mir.
by nate on Mar 4, 2009 6:12 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Ok any1 who thinks lesnar will win is a complete and utter cocknose, mir will end it in the first round, even if he cant take it to the ground he can still out strike him any time, the only experience striking lesnar has is nerf chairs in the WWE. You better pray lesnar doesnt bum rush him again that will loose him the fight by submission it will leave him WIDE open
