UFC Quick Quote: Joe Stevenson banking on small differences to be big factor against Diego Sanchez at UFC 95

"… I also think it is to my advantage to get him in his first fight at 155lbs.This is his first time he has to make this weight, he'll be a little nervous about that. It takes a few times to get the weight-making down right. Also, it is first time overseas, and jetlag does play a factor. It is only a tiny factor, but it is still there and all those little things like the weight-making, the jet lag, the different weather in England, little things like that all start to add up. Like I said, I think Sanchez won't be at his very best in this fight as compared to his second or third fight at 155lbs…. I think he is underestimating me, too…. I want to stop Diego. I want to stop him or submit him. That will be a statement right there."
-- Joe Stevenson talks to EuroSport.Yahoo.com about his upcoming 155-pound showdown against Diego Sanchez in the main event at UFC 95 at The O2 Arena in London, England, on Feb. 21. "Daddy" will welcome "Nightmare" to the lightweight division, which he feels will be to his advantage rather than letting him get comfortable with the drop in weight. He also feels that other changes that come along with fighting overseas will all add up in his favor. Who you got?

Diego called JOe a whitebelt! Lmao! Should be a good fight. Joe should be preparing himself as if the best version of Diego will show up in the cage, but instead he is banking on a watered down version? This will be trouble for JOe!

It sounds like bunz talk to John.. He doesn’t want to fight the best Diego Sanchez at 155? he doesn’t to fight the best Come on man.. listen to him.. Oh.. the jet lag.. and the Weight cut.. his first fight at 155.. etc.. lil balls type talk there my friend.. I bet you he is hoping Diego gets the Flu too.. just to really stack the cards in his favor.. Please.. I like it when fighters come out and say.. I want the best version of X fighter.. that’s what I want to hear.. not this crap.

I think many of Diego’s opponents underestimate his power. He has more Submissions due to strikes in the UFC than most other guys. I think he will make Joe Daddy quit in similar fashion in the 2nd round. Diego was an undefeated BEAST at 170, how will he not be a force at 155? Diego is disciplined enough to not let the weight cut affect him.
I expect Diego to win this, have a fantastic fight against Tyson Griffin (assuming he gets by Dos Anjos) or Sean Sherk, then have a rematch against Kenny Florian for the No.1 contender, assuming Kenny loses to BJ, then wins his rebound fight.
Big things for the LW division coming soon!!

agreed. every time GSP comes to a new fight, its his hardest test to date. i dont understand why some fighters are such d!c@ks when it comes to respect for their other fighters. fight the best or you cant be the best
by wingblade on Feb 10, 2009 1:13 PM EST up reply actions
this is how he plans to win? this is his game plan??
if the guy is depending on jet lag to beat sanchez the guy is a tool… he may suffer from those little things but at the end of the day he is an athlete… he is going to overcome them obviously
if that is what he is depending on then he is going to get beat down
sanchez by tko!

not a good sign when a fighter is hoping the other fighter has a bad weight cut…..not good

I want to eventually see florian vs sanchez 2 but two weight classes lower!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope to see it after BJ beats Florian.

To say I dislike Diego is probably an understatement but I do have to agree with you guys…. I say he is too much for Joe Daddy and GnP’s his way to his first win at 155.

If anyone wants a good laugh, go to bloodyelbow.com and watch el mexicutioner debate the entire group of bloggers on the Kimbo article until he eventually was banned. They seem to be pretty uptight about “fighter bashing” there.

by roy on Feb 10, 2009 11:44 AM EST reply actions
Yeah that would be his 3rd loss in a row. These losses would all 3 be to high caliber competition but still 3 losses. Just like when Hendo lost to Rampage and Silva. They talked about retirement as if those losses were of such a detriment.

i think Joe is on his way to being cut anyway, no big wins, only big losses, the UFC has to complete his 10 for 10 TUF contract before they can release him or they would look bad, now the UFC is just feeding this kid to everyone so they can add him to their resume before he gets released, when you cant contend with the top3 or 4 guys in your weight class this is what happens. I could see him being a force in the 145 div of the WEC, Joe/Faber would be right on the money!!!
by ( (Adam G) ) on Feb 10, 2009 2:31 PM EST up reply actions
Ive always wanted to see Joe vs. Tyson Griffin. I think that would have fight of the night written all over it. I hope he doesn’t get cut after a loss to Diego, because it would be good. Griffin off his loss to Sherk, and Joe off back to back losses to guys that are better than the guy who beat Tyson(I truly believe Kenflo has surpassed Sherk).
by --utaptout-- on Feb 10, 2009 3:06 PM EST up reply actions
yeah adam i have seen them do that before, feed him all tough fights hoping he will lose so when they cut him no one complains.
by roy on Feb 10, 2009 3:32 PM EST up reply actions
The only factor that is dif will be the weight cut. They will both have jetlag and deal with the weather, like that’s a big deal. So I have no clue as to what he is trying to say. Diego will be a monster @ 155!
by BOW on Feb 10, 2009 11:49 AM EST reply actions
He’s saying cause he’s fought overseas before that he has already experienced the jetlag and different weather. He’s just trying to work himself up for this fight because he’s the underdog, give him a break most people don’t think he can win this by anything other than a guillotine.
by Cogito_Ergo_Sum on Feb 10, 2009 11:55 AM EST up reply actions
Like Diego said, Joe hasn’t really evolved at all. Everytime he fights, you see the same Joe Stevenson. He needs to mix up his training because he is starting to seem way too predictable. I’d like to see him fight Joe Lauzon.
by RyanHobbs on Feb 10, 2009 12:07 PM EST up reply actions
Jake Sheilds couldn’t submit Diego and that was years ago. With Diego now training JJ I think even at 50% he will give Joe problems. Weight cutting won’t be a problem because he has been cutting weight his whole life. I hope it is a good fight but I like Diego in this one.
by BILLYCARNAGE on Feb 10, 2009 12:32 PM EST up reply actions
weight cut is an extra 15lbs that the dude honestly did not have to lose though diego in his last few fights was pretty cut.. i dont see joe winning the fight but i think diego’s first time at 155 is going to be similar to vera’s first at 205 however he wont be to weak after that since he will keep his weight lower
by randy murders on Feb 10, 2009 12:58 PM EST up reply actions
That’s true, but it’s not like hes from there. Hasnt he only fought over there once? I guess you use what you can to psych yourself up for a fight that most don’t think you can win.
by BOW on Feb 10, 2009 12:10 PM EST up reply actions
I don’t like joe’s chances and it seems like he doesn’t either…i mean, if he’s counting on Jet Lag, Weather, and the cut to help him win, that’s weak. Besides, Diego channels the power of the weather, so that will not be an issue. Joe gets smashed again in this fight.
by Crowls on Feb 10, 2009 1:44 PM EST up reply actions
i don’t think i can pick a winner for this one, joe hasn’t looked that good in his last couple of fights and i don’t really care for diego. hopefully it will be a good fight though!
by sac165 on Feb 10, 2009 11:53 AM EST reply actions
I just don’t see this chubby little dude doing anything to Diego; Joe should drop a weight class or two
by Anger Jack on Feb 10, 2009 12:09 PM EST reply actions
Just cause I’m a Joe Daddy fan, im gonna say Joe by Guillotine round 2.
Diego will get cocky during one of his takedowns … and Joe daddy is one of the best at the Guillotine
But seriously, if I was betting money it would probably go on Sanchez.
by Reether on Feb 10, 2009 12:16 PM EST reply actions
Im hoping Joe daddy can put away the “Bad Dream”. I dont know what it is but I just never liked Diego. Joe really has a fight coming to him though and I see this going all 3.
by Matt25 on Feb 10, 2009 12:16 PM EST reply actions
I, too, want Joe Daddy to win. He’s a pretty good dude, and a really good fighter. I just think Sanchez is a very fast-paced slimey guy who will come out swinging for the fences. As for Sanchez’s attitude, not many people like him. He’s a goof, but a very hyper, and good fighter.

i remember diego weighing in at 168lbs with his shorts on for the Fitch fight. around a 10lb cut (you can be a pound over for non-title fights) is not that bad and shouldn’t really effect him.
by kneetotheface on Feb 10, 2009 12:28 PM EST reply actions
It seems like Joe is not giving himself much of a chance to win. Banking on small differences like that? Almost saying that Diego would beat him if it was Diego’s 2nd or 3rd fight at 155? I like Joe, but I felt bad for him when this fight was announced. I just don’t see how Joe can beat Diego. Diesgo has never been stopped, while Joe has been stopped via sub twice in the last year. Also, I don’t think the weight cut is going to be a problem for Diego. He’s a machine, and I’ve been saying since the Fitch fight that he needs to drop down to 155. I also think Koscheck should.
by --utaptout-- on Feb 10, 2009 12:28 PM EST reply actions
koscheck making 155 would be harder then diego, he looks like he barely makes 170 remember the first season of TUF was 205 and 185 pretty crazy to know those dudes pretty much all are a lower weightclass (swick is fighting now 35lbs under the weightclass he was on the show at) the only ones that didnt drop weightclasses for the ufc was leben bonnar and griffin
by randy murders on Feb 10, 2009 1:01 PM EST up reply actions
That would be a real tough cut for Kos. He is already ripped at 170.
by Nate on Feb 10, 2009 1:10 PM EST up reply actions
Kos used to wrestle in the 150’s. He could make it. He’s a phenomenal athlete, and he could do it. It would be tough, but it would be worth a shot, instead of being a gatekeeper at 170, because he will never beat GSP or Alves, and I don’t think he could beat Fitch either, if they actually did fight.
by --utaptout-- on Feb 10, 2009 3:03 PM EST up reply actions
Both of these guys are solid I see it being fight of the night easily
by shitleTOT.com on Feb 10, 2009 12:50 PM EST reply actions
That’s a pretty shitty attitude for a fighter but I guess a win’s a win. He basically is hoping outside factors will give him the edge as opposed to actually being a better fighter.
by Ixian on Feb 10, 2009 12:53 PM EST reply actions
Joe is probably being realistic, and recognises Diegos’ abilities I woudn’t call it a shitty attitude. Just like Diego realising after the Fitch fight that he is just too small to fight in that divsion, and doesn’t have the strength and power to compete with the likes of Fitch and GSP even though he may posess the skill.

by GodDamnMike on Feb 10, 2009 1:22 PM EST up reply actions
Diego will get beat up. Not tough enough for 170. Fitch beat him, Nick Diaz got ripped in a decision against him and Kos pounded him into nightmares. Dana is trying to find a place for him to stay. 155 is not the answere. Joe, you better knock him out or submitt him cause they won’t give you a decision if it’s close. Thats one of danas golden boys.lol I hope he gets beat up again.
by Tony P. Draper on Feb 10, 2009 1:13 PM EST reply actions
lol dude you couldnt be more wrong.. KOscheck didnt pound shit dude, that fight was HORRIBLE. THe 170 division has alot more depth then 155. Diego will be fighting for a title in about a years time at 155.
by BMO on Feb 11, 2009 4:04 AM EST up reply actions
Diego took Kos to a descision when he was only at 50%. And Diego made a point of asking to fight Fitch when everybody else was ducking Fitch. What does that say about him not being tough enough. You guys seem to concentrate too much on what Diegos’ wacky personlity outside the octagan, and show no respect or appreciation for what he does inside of it. Or are you just bitter about him going out with an Octogan girl. I have never read any interviews where he has come across as cocky or arrogant. Stop your hating.

Hopefully he goes nowhere! Joe is a good fighter. No shame in losing to Penn and Florian. Diego is going to be a beast at 155. I think Diego will stop him with some GnP!
by JV on Feb 10, 2009 1:45 PM EST up reply actions
He’ll do great at 170, hes a TUF winner at 185 and didnt leave the weight class cause of losses like most do, he left to have a chance at being a champ, 170 has been great to him, near #1 contender spot if he wouldnt have gotten injured and faught Alves instead of Kos like palnned, he could be fighting GSP right now if it had worked out for him so its not like he is leaving the 170 class cause of losses of lack of comp he gives, he did great there. NOW at 155 . . . He has the best shot at Penn, he can be agressive like GSP on Penn while having more to offer then Sherk, KenFlo or other top LTWT contender Tyson Griffin, i think Diego is much more well rounded then threse 3 plus he is agressive, thats what you need in the LTWT division! If he isnt champ eventually (when Penn leaves the div someday) then he will be a top 3er the entire time he is at 155, gaurenteed.

Honestley, I do think the cut to 155 is gonna be tough for him Especially for the first time. Jet lag and English weather is a stretch, but thats a long cut. When’s the last time Diego competed @ 155? High school wrestling tourneys?

Top 5 UFC LTWT match-ups I wanna see;
Diego/Penn
KenFlo/Diego 2
Diego/Guida
Diego/Sherk
KenFlo/Sherk 2
AND KenFlo/Penn of course asap so we can move on to these fights!!! Would have liked to see Clementi/Diego as well but what can ya do, hopfully the UFC is brining in some outside talent like Aoki or Yamamoto or Cavalacante would be nice and Condit coming to the WLWT division should replace Luigi nicely, i want Clementi back though, or in the WEC, he could be a WEC LTWT champ if they are keeping that division. WAR GOOD FIGHTS!!!

Im exited for the purecombat in tulare. thats like and hour and a half away from my pad. Mike Cook vs. Carter Williams should be good. by Hero-Of-Time on Feb 10, 2009 4:06 PM EST reply actions
I would say that it moves him to number 1. He has won several fights in a row and defeating BJ would make a huge statement. Then again, some people may speculate that BJ Penn is just not the same fighter anymore.
by RyanHobbs on Feb 10, 2009 4:57 PM EST up reply actions
I can’t wait to see Diego at 155, he will be a MONSTER!! I’m not worried about the weight cut….first off he’s still very young, and secondly he has a wrestling background so he understands cutting weight. Diego was always on the smallish side as a 170. If you look at most of the guys that are at the top of their division, their always big for their weightclass, and are usually 10-15 pounds heavier come fight time.
I know there are plenty of Diego haters out there cuz he’s kind of a weirdo, and he can come off as cocky. Personally, this guy is my favorite fighter in the UFC, and has been since TUF 1. At the end of the day, he’s a tough as nails mexican kid from the streets of Albequerque with an iron chin, and he’s looking to rip your head off. He’s a pure headhunter, and you gotta love that. I’ve never seen him get his bell rung, not once. I saw a replay of the Joe Riggs knockout the other night, and it perfectly summarized Diego’s style. He stunned Riggs with a punch to the chin that sent Joe to the mat…..and he immediately sprinted right at him and buried his knee into his face at full speed….how do you not love a guy like that??

Diego could be our next champian. Against either Florian or Penn would be a huge seller. He holds an early win over Kenflo and the bjj match up with penn would be a seller

Diego is a little on the wierd side but I love watching this guy fight. He has brought it in every single fight except the time when he fought Kos, so I say he more than likely really was sick. I always thought he was a little small for the 170 class but did great anyway except against Kos and Fitch (but man he never gave up against Fitch). Can’t wait to see him at 155. Being his first fight at 155 makes me a little nervous but he should end up being an absolute beast at 155!
