Seth Petruzelli, Bobby Lashley and more to return at Roy Jones Jr.-promoted MMA/boxing PPV March 21

Roy Jones Jr. -- one of the greatest pound for pound boxers of all time -- has planned an interesting event titled "March Badness" at the Pensacola Civic Center in Pensacola, Fla., for March 21, featuring a hybrid boxing and mixed martial arts card.

While Jones is the one promoting the event, he'll also double as a fighter. In the main event, he'll step into the ring for the first time since dropping only the fifth fight of his illustrious career to Joe Calzaghe by unanimous decision in November. His opponent will be Omar Sheika (27-8).

The MMA portion of the card is expected to feature three pretty solid match-ups.

First off, Seth "The Silverback" Petruzelli (10-4) is set to face ex-WEC light heavyweight champion Doug "The Rhino" Marshall (9-3). The "Silverback" is a two-fight UFC veteran (1-1) who was a contestant and semi-finalist on season two of "The Ultimate Fighter."

He hit the MMA lotto in October of last year when he filled in at the last minute for the injured Ken Shamrock in the main event of Elite XC: "Heat" and stopped the previously undefeated YouTube.com street fighting legend Kimbo Slice in 14 seconds. This will be the Orlando native's first fight since that career-changing win last October.

The second fight expected to go down is a heavyweight battle between former International Fight League (IFL) standout Roy "Big Country" Nelson (13-3) and former UFC number one contender Jeff "The Snowman" Monson (27-8). Both guys are well versed in all aspects of the game and this one should be a very technical match-up.

Former WWE superstar Bobby Lashley (1-0) will make his second professional start in the last MMA match on the card. The decorated amateur wrestler was scheduled to face Mike Hayes on the Palace Fighting Championships card in California this weekend, but the big man pulled out of the fight almost two weeks ago because of an ankle injury.

His opponent for March 21 has not been announced at this time.

"March Badness" will only be available on pay-per-view (PPV). Also, if you live in the area, tickets can still be had for as low as $28. It should be an interesting show.

Why is it that the one time that Monson has a bunch of interesting matchups, he might not be able to do any of them?

It’s still to be seen. Probably fees for the spray painting charges but possibly time for his psycho girlfriend and definite loss of his passport for now.

is it me or are these boxers finally beginning to concede that their sport is outdated…golden boy sponsering mma..roy jones sponsering mma…these guys know where the future is, and it isnt with boxing…their sport is fading away…and they know it…there are more people in this country who can name 10 mma fighters than 10 boxers…

it isn’t really fading though, boxing has its own fans as does MMA they just want to merge the 2 fans to like each others sport and maybe make some super fights between boxers and mma fighters

“The "Silverback" is a two-fight UFC veteran (1-1) who was a contestant and semi-finalist on season two of "The Ultimate Fighter."”

You might want to check your facts, Petruzelli’s UFC record is 0-2. He lost to Matt Hamill on the Ortiz vs. Shamrock 3 card and lost to Wilson Gouveia at UFC Fight Night 9.

Good for Roy Jones, great for us this is a really good card. Hopefully he fights before the MMA fights. I can’t imagine watching a boxing match after seeing Bobby Lashley and Jeff Monson in MMA matches

I would gladly pay two, maybe even three dollars*, to see this card.

  • - (assuming of course I manage to get a few buddies to come over and split the cost between us.)

Rich B, Seriously? you wouldnt pay to see this event? I think this is the biggest mma event over the next few months. The next few UFC events are total crap. Untill April 18th there is nothing I would oay to see that UFC has put together.

1). Get to see Bobby Lashley in action and despite what Dana White says I think Lashley is part of the future in the Heavyweight Division. He is one of only a few guys that is bigger then Brock Lesnar and that would be a marquee matchup pitting two former NCAA Champions against each other.

2). How will Seth Petruzelli rebound after his big win last october? should be interesting but I have Doug Marshall in this one

3). Roy Nelson vs Jeff Monson is a solid fight on any MMA card without a doubt.

4). I’m not a big boxing fan, But i know enough about the sport that Roy Jones JR may not be the P4P King anymore but he is a legend.

5). Finally I think it will be interesting to see how a MMA/Boxing event does, How they pull everything together.

Why Pensacola? Why not Orlando, Tampa or Hollywood FL? I guess that’s why tickets are as low as 28 bucks.

How can we contact the matchmaker? Steve Banks wants to fight Bobby Lashley. Spread the word.

nah boxers are promoting mma because the purse is much smaller and afordable..good for business….imagine if i was the promoter and just in the planing stage i haf to pay pacquiao 12 million guaranteed purse and ricky hatton the same amount…thats a lot of risk businesswise…and actually share the PPV with the 2 fighters…while in mma ill just pay the fighters 500T tops and keep the ppv money like what zuffa does
