UFC Quick Quote: Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua 'has everything' to beat Chuck Liddell at UFC 97

"... Shogun will be better next time. He was out of training and rhythm [against Mark Coleman] ... It’ll be a tough fight. Liddell hits hard, but I think my brother will be prepared. He knows what to do. My brother is a versatile guy, on the ground and striking. He has everything to beat Liddell, and, if he wins, he can already fight for the belt."
-- Murilo "Ninja" Rua assures Tatame.com that his brother, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, will be better prepared when he enters the Octagon against former light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell for the UFC 97: "Redemption" co-main event on April 18 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The Pride FC 2005 Middleweight Grand Prix Champion has underwhelmed in his first two performances for the promotion, losing to Forrest Griffin in his debut and sluggishly defeating a journeyman, Mark Coleman, in his encore performance. The Brazilian has looked poorly conditioned and unlike the dominant fighter who torched some of the best the division had to offer while competing in Japan. He has two months to find his training and rhythm, which he will need against Mr. "Iceman."

I wonder if ATT can teach chucky to keep his hands up. Still though Shogun was really never a fighter with massive power in his hands. But so long as he can up his cardio, i will be happy to root for him and hope for some flashy muay thai.

I agree with Jared, a fan should stick with his favorite fighter. So, as a long time fan of the Iceman, I will say that he knocks Shogun’s head into the cheap seats. I just don’t see how Shogun can turn around from the absolute mess that he was against Coleman, to being able to beat Liddell in 3 months? If he gets gassed the way he did against Coleman and against Forrest, Chuck has more than enough power to put him to sleep.

I stated in another thread a while back that I don’t think Shogun will ever be the fighter we saw in PRIDE again. That being said, I sure hope I’m wrong. I like the guy, and adding another beast to the already stacked division can only be good for us fans. Here’s to hoping Shogun has been running and puts a beating on Chuck.

He’s just a motherf****** waste of time, talent and is never gonna get a title shot even if he beats King Kong, gives his grandma a flying knee, armbars his dog, sleeps with Overeem or drops of a cargo of food to Africa!

It seems like people are actually forgetting how crap he was against Forrest. He was really that bad, it wasn’t because Forrest was that good, and he was even worse against Coleman. Chuck by knockout anytime he wasnts, and I am not even a Chuck fan. Dana knew exactly what he was doing for his buddy Chuck when he saw how pathetic Shugun looked against Coleman. He could not afford to let Chuck lose to Jardine in a rematch, but Shogun looks like a sure victory.
by Ade on Feb 6, 2009 8:51 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I have never really seen Shogun fight except against Forrest and Coleman. Not impressed at all. And from what I seen Chuck is going to send his head into the 3rd row. Why else do you think Dana would feed him this match so early, he sees the same thing. Chuck getting a win over a name, cause It sure isn’t gonna come against Machida,Rampage,Rashad or forrest.

Yup. If Shogun looks anything like he did in his last 2 fights he will get his head taken off by Chuck. This match is tailor made for Chucky – and Dana knows it.

I said I thought Shogun was overrated for weeks leading up to the Coleman fight and even I was shocked by how poor his performance was. I meant he was a little overrated. After watching that fight, I don’t think Shogun will ever make even a top 5 LHW.
It’s hard to know how old and puffy Chuck will come into this fight. But if I have to pick, it’s Chuck.

John it hurts me sayin it man but good lord, ive seen no reason to believe Shogun is gonna come back different than his horrible performance against Coleman, and if so, Chuck will probably destroy both him and you John, in a single blow.
by The Anomaly on Feb 6, 2009 12:18 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah Shogun may not look like himself these days BUT… everyone seems to be forgetting how poor Chucks been performing over the past year.
Chuck hasn’t KO’d anyone since Couture in 2006 (3 years ago). Yeah he TKO’d Babalu & Tito afterwards but I’m going back to my old arguement here from when Chuck was the 205 king and remind everyone that they, like most of his other comp were NOT strikers in any way. Pure grapplers with serviceable stand-up.
Notice that once he moved on to Rampage(striker), Jardine(striker), Wanderlei(striker), Rashad (new found striker), he was unable to dominate as he had against grapplers previously in his career.
Is he capable of beating Shogun? Well, it’s MMA folks. Anyone can win on any given day no matter who it is. But we cant ignore the facts. I think most of us can agree that Chucks best performance in his last 4 fights was against Wand, right? Those familiar with both Wand & Shogun can attest to what I’m gonna say next which is that Shogun is the more well-rounded striker with the more technical skill-set, agreed?
Here’s my point, I’ll admit there’s a sprinkling of MMath here but I expect Shogun to have a much better chance at winning this fight convingly. His true obstacle isnt Chuck but his own cardio which can easily be corrected between now and fight night.
On the other hand. Chuck will not be able to bridge the gap that separates he and Shogun in terms of skill-set in that same amount of time.
Come fight night, on paper, Shogun will be the superior fighter. No matter how much Chuck has improved at ATT. That’s why I’m picking Rua to win.

by brendan on Feb 6, 2009 12:49 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I re-thought what I posted about Chuck not bridging the gap. If the Chuck we’re currently used to seeing shows up, I stand by what I said BUT…My logic is slightly flawed. If he can simply mix things up and keep Shogun guessing, he stands a good chance at winning. Question is, will he? If he lasers in on the KO then Shogun by decision. If adds a heaping portion of takedowns and kicks to his heavy-handed recipe then I can see a possible TKO or Decision for Liddell.
I’m struggling to be objective here but I really want to see Shogun win and I believe he will. On paper, he should. It’s too big of an opportunity for him to pass up. Especially after falling short against Forrest.
by Machine on Feb 6, 2009 12:54 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Chuck got beaten to the punch by both Rampage and Rashad, and Jardine had a solid gameplan which I beleive could only work for him. Do you really see Shogun beating Chuck to the Punch, I don’t. Shoguns performance was not any better than it was against Forrest, it is just that Coleman was worse than Forrest. You may have facts but I do not see Shogun beating Chuck in the same way any of those fighters did before, and there was absolutley nothing that Shogun showed in his last two fights to show that he is any threat whatsoever to Chuck. Chuck would have knocked Coleman out in the first round, and he would definately not have been gassed by the second round. I am not even a Chuck fan, you guys need to sit down and watch Shoguns last two fights again. I bet what you are saying now about Shogun you said after he lost to Forrest, and look how crap he was. The guy nearly got beat by Mark Coleman. You need to wake up.The UFC might drop him just in time for the next Affliction show.
by Ade on Feb 7, 2009 3:25 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
The Chuck we are currently used to seeing would have knocked Coleman out in the first round. And what did you see in the Coleman and Forrest fights that makes you beleive that Shogun has any chance of beating Chuck. I picked Jardine and Rashad to both beat Chuck, but there is no way that I would pick Shogun to do it. Jardines gameplan was solid and Rampage and Rashad both beat Chuck to the punch. They just connected before he did. That could have happned to anyone. Shoguns has just looked absolutely crap in both fights, that is not the same as getting beaten to the punch, and I am not even a Chuck fan.

That’s what I was just thinking. I haven’t seen him other than in the UFC. The talk has gone way past what he has shown. He seems way over-rated and is set to prove himself against a cage veteran. Tough task… I’m gonna go with Chuck, 2nd RD TKO.
by DJ on Feb 6, 2009 6:55 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
DJ-
you said, “I haven’t seen him other than in the UFC”. Thanks for being honest. But how can you make a clean pick when you know so much about Chuck but so little about his opponent?
I’m not picking at you personally but I’ve seen too many posters do the same thing with alot of different fighters.
Here’s the flip-side of the coin, It’s like being newly exposed to Chuck without ever seeing any of his other fights and only seeing his 2nd Rampage loss and the following Jardine loss. What would anyone think of Chuck then? See what I’m saying?
As fans, it’d be nice to see more of us grow by learning more about fighters that are strangers to us as well as more about the sport and Martial Arts overall. Imagine the discussions and debates………
by Machine on Feb 6, 2009 9:50 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
What people don’t remember about Chuck is that after he got knocked out by Rashad, he came out and said you will see a totally different Chuck Liddell in my next fight. I’m speculating that he will start using some of his ground game now. Which, I think he needed to a long time ago, he wasn’t displaying good MMA skills for a while, he was only kickboxing which hasn’t worked out too well for him in the past few fights. He beat Wandy convincingly and if you can recall he actually took Wandy to the ground twice! I couldn’t believe it when I saw but that’s what he has to do.
The Iceman has a lot of good fights left in him. He just has to start using more than the stand up. Every fighter that has been matched up with Chuck only has to train on their endurance and their boxing skills. If Chuck can mix his game up, he’ll be deadly.

Theres a shocker he is picking his brother to win. Sorry ninja but your bro doesn’t have a shot in hell, he is gettin ko’d. It doesn’t matter which shogun shows up, but if he is anywhere near the shape he was in both his ufc fights it is gonna be a highlight reel 2nd round ko for chuck.
by LG on Feb 5, 2009 8:56 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
hmmmmm, tough one to call. I am a Huge Chuck Liddell fan, and it isn’t as if he has lost to any scrubbs lately. On the flip side of that, for chuck to be successful again he is going to have to mix it up. Use more of his kick boxing and his wrestling skills to maybe do some ground and pound or submit someone. Chuck is to easy to prepare for anymore, and the formula to beat the old chuck is out and has been cashed in 3 of his last 4 fights. Imagine how easily chuck could probably get a take down and ground and pound someone out. They would never see it coming, he would probably mount faster than anyone in a long time. Mix it up a little chuck and make those nuclear wart heads a little less predictable and I believe you have another 2 years left. If not, this may be your last fight unfortunately for me and all your other fans. Show gun has looked like shit, plane and simple.

Yeah, that drug testing really hindered him when he destroyed Randleman and Overeem in Vegas under the PRIDE banner. I sometimes wonder, are that many of you TUF geeks?? Or are you just trolls looking for a reaction?? Shogun has never been knocked out. Not in mma, not in professional muay thai, and he has faced a lot better strikers in both. Shogun by TKO.

I wonder about you Pride snobs. I was Fighting 1999-2001 and was into pride. However, the current competition in the UFC is superior! Some of these “TUF geeks” are making consistently better predictions because they aren’t clouded by an old love affair. Unless Chuck comes in looking older than ever, he will win.

I’m rooting for Shogun in this fight..Its a very dangerous fight for Shogun, Shogun has never been finished and cannot perform the way he did when he fought an aging Coleman against Chuck Liddell who can end a fight with one devastating punch.
Shogun has all the tools in his arsenal to beat Liddell. As long as his conditioning is at its best he will win this fight. I want to see the aggressive Rua of old come out and send the iceman into retirement.
Shogun has to put on a spectacular performance during this fight if he wants to remain relevant in the UFC and not get dropped. He needs this win bad, both fighters do.

Shogun was lazy, I dont buy into the training rhythm, sure it helps, but it doesnt make you gas out in 1 round. Hope shogun realizes he needs to work his but off, because all he is doing now is asking to be dominated again and making us start to wonder if he was on roids (many are already convinced).
by Scott on Feb 5, 2009 9:04 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Here’s why I believe Rua was juiced:
1. He looked much bigger, stronger and more athletic in PRIDE.
2. He has a bro-mance with Wanderlei Silva, who looked clearly ‘roided when he fought under the PRIDE banner. It’s not a coincidence that Wanderlei has also struggled in the U.S.
3. PRIDE did not drug test and was acknowledged to have a lot of “shaved ape with shrivelled genitalia” types in their organization.
I don’t think we’ll aver see a return to form for Shogun. Being out of shape is one thing, but the guy has just looked flat-out terrible for a while now.

Loser of this fight won’t sniff a title shot for years in a crowded division. That alone should be plenty to motivate both of these guys, who both should be feeling desparation to redeem their reps and re-ignite their careers.
I expected Shogun to have ring rust and be off his peak game, but I didn’t expect to gas in the 1st round after waiting a year plus to fight vs. someone he should have been extremely motivated to anihilate. Chuck on the other hand, has to feel some degree of shell shock as to how the last couple years have played out for him. I’m not sure the winner vaults himself to any higher than being 4th or 5th in line for a shot at the belt.

Not necessarily. If he was indeed using steroids, and he started to use them before he was able to build a good solid base without them, then most of the gains he would make while training on them would be lost once he was off. I have known people who only train when they are on steroids, and when they come off, they shrivel up to nothing.

I don’t see how beating Chuck vaults Shogun to the top of the contender heap in the LHW division. Chuck hasn’t knocked anyone out in forever, has lost three fights out of his last 4 and frankly isn’t scaring too many people lately.
Even if Shogun does win (let’s go so far as to what if him to a clear KO of Chuck), his last two performances against Forrest and Coleman were shabby at best. One good fight doesn’t put him ahead of three or four other guys fighting their best right now. Rampage, Forrest, Jardine ALL deserve a shot before anyone else gets a crack…

Biggets Chuck fan!!! (ME)
A lot is being made of chucks losses, yes the rashad ko looks bad on the cv, however chuck was winning that fight and IMO he responded to a booing crowd and paid the price!! Other fighters have gameplns, chuck was winning with his but got caught up in the crowd, abondoned his gameplan and got ko’d!!
jardine- Very close fight closer than alot of you guys are making out, it was a split decision and the more i watch that fight the closer it gets!! A rematch and chuck wins!!
Rampage- simply got caught!! it happens!
I totally agree that chuck has to mix it up especially with kicks as he is really dominant in that department but hasnt shown it recently!! But to say he is a gatekeeper is ridiculous!!
The only fighter in the division I think gives chuck a true headache is rampage, I think he gives most other guys the beatdown including Lyoto!!

Everyone seems to have gotten off the iceman wagon but ill cheer for him till the day he retires. I think he has so much too lose if shogun wins and I’m expecting chuck to come out impressive. Plus if he does win then maybe hell get to fight forrest. I’ve been waiting for that matchup for so long. Who as a fan wouldn’t want too see coach vs student from TUF 1!
