Affliction presents M-1 Challenge beginning Feb. 21 in Seattle

M-1 Challenge 12 presented by Affliction is set do go down with 15 bouts scheduled for the February 21 event at Emerald Queen Casino in Seattle, Washington.
The premise for M-1 Challenge is similar to that of the now-defunct International Fight League (IFL) placing an emphasis on team combat. The difference for M-1 is the focus won’t be on cities or training camps but rather individual countries - 16 to be exact with one fighter represented in each weight class.
The first to duke it out for sovereign dominance will be Team Finland when they take on Team Benelux which is comprised of fighters from Belgium, Netherlands and Luxemburg.
Team Finland captain Toni Valtonen will do battle with Sander Duyvis. Experience could be a factor in this one. Valtonen is a veteran of 25 fights compared to Duyvis’ four.
South Korea will battle The Imperial Team (formerly Team Russia). The Imperial Team actually won last years M-1 Challenge and they’ll be eager to hold on to that title when they start the best-of-five showdown with South Korea.
And Team USA West will look to deport Team Brazil Naja when the two go head-to-head.
One of the more notable fighters for Team USA west will be Bobby Green, who some may know from his recent loss to Dan Lauzon at Affliction ‘Day of Reckoning’. Despite the loss he had a decent outing and proved he was able to take it to Lauzon, clearly overwhelming him in the stand-up.
It should be an exciting night of fights with a handful of young up-and-coming prospects to keep an eye on.
Here is the official fight card for M-1 Challenge 12:
Finland vs. Benelux:
Juha-Pekka Vainikainen (10-3) vs. Danny van Bergen (5-4-3)

Yeah, I actually like this show. THe Couintry vs. Country thing is a great concept. Also allows the UFC to scout young foreign fighters!

LW Fighter – Daisuke Nakumura (spelling) has NASTY submissions – very slick.
I enjoy watching Psycho Carl Ommasoo fight as well – he always looks for a KO, unlike Huggie Bear (sorry Stinky, just had to do it).
I have also taken notice of HW Jessie Gibbs – in fact, he is the only loss on that guy that is fighting Cain Velasquez this weekend.
Also, very impressed with the resiliancy of Dmitry Samoilov. I STILL can’t believe he didn’t tap in that fight. If anyone watched every M-1 global, they know that I’m talking about. And I’m a fan of Mikhail Zayats. He fights at 205 but doesn’t even weigh that much so he has no business fighting at LHW, should be at MW, and he is still wrecking people.
Where are all the M-1 peeps at????

your knowledge of this is very impressive VM!
Forget the GSP vs. Anderson fight I want to see GSP vs. Wanderlei!

Just looked up the spelling = Karl Amoussou.
I just “you tubed” him to find he HIGHLIGHT REEL KO of Samoilov IMMEDIATELY after a restart in the center of the ring. I verified, and that KO is at the very end of this little 3 minute highlight of him. Most of you probably don’t know this kid or seen this KO, check it!!!

Actually, that clip doesn’t do the KO justice because the clip is out of context…. Here is the whole fight.

IF you are impatient, fast forward to 3:30 of the clip.

My bad, I got confused… I was just headed out for lunch, and I was like, “BOGDAN, that’s it!!!”
Bogdan Christea was the fighter that just WOULD NOT tap agianst Nakumura. Dmitry Samoilov’s name was just so prominantly in my mind because of that KO he was on the reciving end of…

Thanks for the footage VM…. Impressive!
I tried posting the link yesterday, but it was never posted. MMascraps has some video footage of jON Jones fights before he made it to the UFC. THis kid is an animal. YOU guys gotta see the 15 second KO he has under his belt!

For those of you looking for somthing to watch, go to youtube and type “Bogdan Christea” and watch the fight against Daisuke and then answer me this “Who has the biggest balls in all of MMA?”
Also, I find it interesting that as a youngser Bogdan was also hit by a truck and was in a coma for some time, similar to Nog = You can NOT finish the guy. I remember the announcers saying something else about him, he almost lost some limbs or his life a few times… Pretty crazy stuff. Bogdan has some SERIOUS pride!
John, it is a MUST see for you. Don’t just watch that highlight package, you must see the whole fight between
Daisuke Nakamura vs Bogdan
I’m going to lunch, be back in an hour and a half. I will look forward to your comments/reaction!!!
Attention PHIL and any other grapplers!!!! How many times SHOULD Bogdan have tapped in that fight?
by ViolentMike on Feb 5, 2009 12:53 PM EST up reply actions
VM: All I can say is WOW!!!! Dude should have tapped through out the entire fight! Talk about BALLZ!!!! Nakamura dude got a nice ground game but this dudes heart was very impressive!~

Good heads up on Hardonk john. I think everyone overlooks him way too much. And gotta agree with VM on Daisuke, he is the epitomy of how scrambling and grappling should be -always looking for something. Loved the way him and tokoro went at it at k1 or his fight with that kid on M1 that he hit the flying armbar on twice.

I’ve seen 5 or so of the M-1 challenge shows and there are some good fights. It’s mixed with some others that aren’t too interesting but on the show they spared the viewers with some editing.

I heard that TBA guy on Team USA West is the shit. He is very unpredictable and mysterious.

Yeah only thing is he always ends up pulling out injured and getting replaced by someone else. I’m still waiting to see him make his debut. Hopefully this time? Fingers crossed.

Kongo v Hardonk??? Imo its time for a step up in competion for Kongo…
by McArthur on Feb 5, 2009 1:09 PM EST reply actions
once he wins this fight he will move up in competition. UFC has been building him up slowly which is good because its giving him a chance to improve on his ground game!

This is such a great idea. I just wish it was done like the world cup. Every 4 years and the best of the best fighting in each division. MMA WORLD CUP. It could never happen with the contracts and what not, but a guy can dream.
by RyGuy on Feb 5, 2009 2:56 PM EST reply actions
Actually I guess it could happen if it is done and organized by the UFC. UFC WORLD CUP!
