UFC Quick Quote: Thiago Alves is going to knock Georges St. Pierre out

"It'll be a great fight. I'm very excited, I can't wait ... It's going to be great. I saw what he did with BJ Penn and I'll have to beat him a lot, do my game. I expected and didn't expect [St. Pierre to dominate Penn] understood? (laughs). I knew he would win, but not this way. He's much bigger than the BJ, a better athlete, and the sport today, in that level, you have to be the best athlete. I'll go there to knock him out."

– Number one welterweight contender Thiago Alves shares his hopes with Tatame.com regarding the outcome of his pending title fight with 170-pound champion Georges St. Pierre. "Rush" recently restored order to a division on the brink of chaos by pummeling BJ Penn at UFC 94 on January 31. Now St. Pierre can focus on business in the welterweight division - most notably Thiago Alves. "Pitbull" has been on a two-year tear, with five of his last seven wins ending by way of (T)KO, including stoppages over ranked opponents Matt Hughes and Karo Parisyan. This one's going to be fireworks indeed.

This will be a tougher test than Penn will be. Although Alves doesn’t have the same ground skills to stay alive as long as BJ did, he better hope he can stuff the best take down in MMA. The only way for Alves to win this one is early, early, EARLY KO ala Matt Serra.

by c-war on Feb 4, 2009 11:58 AM EST up reply actions

I disagree. Alves has been my one of my favorite fightes for a while. He is the better stand up fighter and I think if he can keep the fight standing he can win by KO or win by decision which is a huge possibility because he did very well against KOS’ takedons and in my opinion Alves did better against KOS than GSP did. Alves could win assumning he makes weight.

by JRV on Feb 4, 2009 12:04 PM EST up reply actions

GSP’s strategy against Kos was completely different than Alves; GSP dominated Kos at wrestling; his own game. Alves defended the TD’s and out pointed Kos on the feet; they were totally different fights and both fighters came in with totally different game plans, I don’t think you can use Kos as a measuring stick for how this fight will look.

Alves can KO GSP assuming he gets the opportunity; honestly though, I don’t see anyone short of A. Silva stopping George right now, the second this fight hits the ground it’s all GSP. Alves TDD is great but George has been labeled the best wrestler in all of MMA now; besides I think everyone agrees, Alves only has one chance at winning, a KO, GSP can win in so many more ways.

by O damn he got caught on Feb 4, 2009 12:50 PM EST up reply actions

agreed OD…I also feel as though KOS didn’t have the right game plan…given he only had 2 weeks to train I feel the outcome might have been different if he had applied a different srategy

*strategy ;)

by McArthur on Feb 4, 2009 2:18 PM EST up reply actions

On the above topic, is anyone else of the same opinion as me that GSP was more fun to watch when he first came into the UFC?

Flashy kicks/punches and looking to keep it standing rather than autopilot takedowns.

He is a far far better fighter now but just from an entertainment point of view, take down then g&p is the dullest of all tactics no?

by Nick J on Feb 4, 2009 2:37 PM EST up reply actions

The first time I saw GSP it was the Jason Miller at UFC 52.

And yea, it was exciting. Lots of stand-up. I saw that on DVD. I didn’t see GSP again until the Matt Hughes fight when GSP submitted him by armbar after completely controlling the fight…

Then, I saw him beat Serra by takedown, then Fitch by takedown. Those fights were more boring I thought.

So I agree. It’s not much fun to watch GSP take people down.

But it works, so…

You thought GSP/Fitch was boring??? Your watching the wrong sport man.

BREAKING NEWS…GSP SPEAKS!!!!!!

“I just can’t believe it. I don’t know. I’m just surprised. I’m not a cheater. What happened is my trainer, my Muay Thai coach, he put Vaseline on my face and then put his hand on my chest and back. But that’s a technique we use for breathing. It’s good. It’s used in Muay Thai. I use it in many of my fights. If you look at my previous fights, it’s not the first time he does that. Then B.J. said he put Vaseline and rubbed my back. Anyway, I think it’s an excuse. I have nothing to hide. I’m not even afraid to go into court and fight that.

When I lose, I always try to figure out why I lose. But the problem with B.J., he tries to figure out why he loses, but he doesn’t focus on himself. He focuses on the other person. When I lost the fight I focused on what I did wrong. I didn’t focus on what I cannot change. B.J., instead of focusing on things he can change to make himself better, he tries to focus on things he doesn’t have any control over, and tries to find some excuse that it’s not up to him. It’s really an excuse. He should focus on things that he can change about himself in the fight to make himself better. That would be a better approach for him…"

Wow. Very nice!!!! Resource? Mania should make that a thread. I agree with what he said.

by c-war on Feb 4, 2009 3:05 PM EST up reply actions

me too…especially seeing as how GSP could’ve remembered all the smack talk and legitimate pre-fight hype from BJ and used the opportunity to throw it in BJ’s face (like a lot of us unfortunately)…classy guy that GSP.

I hate siting other blogs in which I read stuff cause I love posting here and don’t want to upset MMAMANIA but I found it at mmanews.com….I’m sure MANIA will moderate this post if I’m out of line but I’m cool wit dat ;)

by McArthur on Feb 4, 2009 3:16 PM EST up reply actions

Too bad BJ isn’t the one who initally brought up the issue. It happened between round 1 & 2, remember George. Nice try though. That doesn’t sound like a classy answer to me. BJ just said he may file a complaint so it doesn’t happen again and that GSP was the better fighter. GSP is just kicking BJ while he is down like the majority of the GSP fans do as well.

by BNF on Feb 4, 2009 3:38 PM EST up reply actions

Thanks McArthur!! Good Stuff!

by PhilQNY on Feb 4, 2009 3:53 PM EST up reply actions

BNF, he had to say something and I believe that he speaks the truth and has said it in a way that is FAR less offensive then anything said about him ie.BJ going to kill him, GSP on steroids, GSP is a quitter etc.

by McArthur on Feb 4, 2009 4:22 PM EST up reply actions

He could have addressed the “greasing” issue without slamming BJ, that’s all. Pre-fight hype is all BS, this is real talk.

by BNF on Feb 4, 2009 4:33 PM EST up reply actions

a lot of people feel that BJ crossed the pre-fight hype line…or can you just say anything you want??? With respect BNF, what goes around comes around and I honestly think that BJ is getting his.

by DSmith on Feb 4, 2009 5:30 PM EST up reply actions

First off f*c* BJ. I was a fan this vasoline $h*t is BS, he got beat…beat bad no excuses. The fact that he is going through with this dropped me off his fan list, he can go f*%k his brother. This hole vasoline thing is BS. The fact that BJ know`s this and is still going through with it to prove what? To get to GSP`s next match, I feel sorry for you Alves, GSP will show that even when his corner man doesn`t touch his back why he`s the champ. Alves is one tough SOB though only problem is GSP is a better fighter.

by Beaver on Feb 4, 2009 8:23 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed, early flash knockout or nothing. Alves had good take down defense against Kos, I maybe wrong but Kos couldn’t take him down at all. That being said Kos couldn’t stop GSP’s take downs. And let’s hope for Alves’ sake he can make weight.

by DSmith on Feb 4, 2009 12:12 PM EST up reply actions

but koscheck really didnt go for any takedowns in that fight… he kinda just clinched and tried to drag him down a couple times, he really didnt shoot like he usually does, probly afraid of knees

Koscheck took the fight on short notice

by matthew on Feb 4, 2009 12:37 PM EST up reply actions

yeah 2 weeks preparation wasn’t a good idea, sure he was training but alves was peaking for the fight of his life with diego

by randy murders on Feb 4, 2009 12:54 PM EST up reply actions

This is why i love this kid. Even against the best welterweight ever and a top 2 p4p fighter, his plan is the same – KO. It was too bad that he couldn’t short circuit kos, that would have made up for the silva fight.

by NameNotRequired on Feb 4, 2009 6:33 PM EST up reply actions

Totally agree… Thiago is a true fighting WW and will be a huge challenge for GSP. That said, GSP continues to improve, no one trains the way he does and until you have fought him, you have not experienced anything like him. So my (very) early prediction will be GSP TKO RD 4.

doubt it thiago, but at least your gonna be on a gsp highlight reel!

i like thiago and he will be a top 5 contender for the next 3-5 years but not now, we all want to see the french canandian fight the spider!

I dont… GSP will get crushed by Silva!!

by ---Caesar--- on Feb 4, 2009 2:41 PM EST up reply actions

alves is going to not only stuff his takedowns, but he is going to knock GSP’s block off!

GSP always enjoys the strength advantage over his opponents. He wont have that luxury against Alves who is HUGE, which makes this fight very interesting! If GSP gets by him, then there is really nothing left for him except maybe Jake Sheilds. You guys all know Alves is my puppy! I predicted he would be the break out fighter of the year, like synyster is now doing with mousasi!

I am a big GSP fan, but I was on team Penn. I dont want to hear the GSP nut huggers say that I am only picking Alves cause GSP lost….Last week, I predicted that Alves would be the next welterweight champion regardless of if he was facing gSP or Alves and I am going to stand by my statement!

What happens ig Gsp cant take alves down? I know you GSP fans dont wanna c GSP exchanging with Alves in a stand up war!

by john on Feb 4, 2009 3:50 PM EST up reply actions

Other then a couple solid knee’s what ‘stand up’ has alves performed that you’d assume he’d knock GSP’s block off??? First of all he was beaten by Fitch, which many of you would like to forget or discredit (Fitch KO’d him). Second he’s beaten Hughes, Karo, and Kos of which only Kos is a top 10 WW.

I’ll be the first to say Alves will be KO’d in the first round. GSP will destroy him on his feet!

by Arnold on Feb 4, 2009 4:44 PM EST up reply actions

I know this is an old fight, but wasn’t Lytle winning that fight against Alves? I’m not saying he woulda beat him, or that Alves is still at that level, but if at that time Lytle was outstriking Alves, GSP definitely has more than a chance at beating Alvs on the feet.

by Synyster [[2009 Year of Gegard Mousasi]] on Feb 4, 2009 5:15 PM EST up reply actions

r u nutts? Alves was killing lytle!

Arnold: Fitch beat alves prior to Alves’s improvement. I think he would whoop Fitch’s ass right now!

Solid knees? thats it? HOw about some of the most brutal kicks in the game….his hands are nice too!

Karo was a top 10 fighter who had NEVER been Ko’ed until Alves lit his ass up!

congrats, you are picking GSP, the heavy favorite to win…. I got Faith in the dog!

by john on Feb 4, 2009 5:24 PM EST up reply actions

GSP can beat Alves on the feet, but it’s not in his best interest to try. And Alves did lose to Fitch, but he has changed a lot since that fight. It happened two and a half years ago when Alves was only 22 years old. I think GSP will win the fight, but Alves is a very dangerous opponent.

by GregC on Feb 4, 2009 5:28 PM EST up reply actions

For Alves to stand any kind of chance he has to be very confident, aggressive and willing to bring it to George or he will get out techniqued.

GSP has great plans for fights and the only to change his plan is to take it to him. The one thing Alves has is great striking and KO power.

I personally think it will be a very tough match up for St.Pierre if they both come hard but GSP should be able to take Alves down when he gets too cocky and GnP his way to a victory.

It will be good though.

by Ca$z on Feb 4, 2009 5:37 PM EST up reply actions

Is great striking and ko power 1 or 2 things? Im confused.

So does Alves have 1 or 2 things going for him?.

by dayzah on Feb 4, 2009 9:55 PM EST up reply actions

Thiago is tough, but if it goes to the ground with Gsp in the mount, he has no chance against gsp.

by Kdog on Feb 4, 2009 4:58 PM EST up reply actions

GSP likes side-mount from what I’ve seen recently, or North-South mount and do the kimura. Haven’t really seen him dish out too much punishment from the mount. I could be wrong though.

by Synyster [[2009 Year of Gegard Mousasi]] on Feb 4, 2009 5:16 PM EST up reply actions

u r not wrong! good call

by john on Feb 4, 2009 6:27 PM EST up reply actions

GSP seems to like to beat fighters at their own game. If he tries that crap against Alves he is going to get KTFO!!!!

I do miss the times when GSP used to actually strike. Recently it has been mostly wrestling out of him. THats not to diminish him, I just thought he was much more exciting prior to Matt Serra knocking him the F out!

Since that fight, he has been over utilizing his wrestling….but whatever works!

by john on Feb 4, 2009 6:56 PM EST up reply actions

i remember fitch challenged him saying gsp was afraid to get hit, then what happened?

by Egads on Feb 4, 2009 7:39 PM EST up reply actions

GSP doesn’t do damage from the mount?

And Penn had never been cut.

So what happened to Penn when GSP had side-mount? He cut and pummeled Penn.

Are you guys actually watching UFC, or are you just talking about it from dreams you had?

by ftg314 on Feb 4, 2009 9:47 PM EST up reply actions

I feel the same way. There is that small chance that Alves could catch GSP an KO him. But that can happen against any opponent. The only reason it scares me is that I don’t see Alves as an awesome all around MMA fighter. And if he won, he could lose it to his very next opponent. If GSP dismantles Alves, I dont see anyone challenging Georges for a long while. And I think that is good for the sport. They need to keep a sustaining Champ in their respective divisions, so the casual fans will get to know them and root for them or boo them. Like Light-Heavy Weight division has had 3 different champs in the last 3 fights. Heavyweight division has 2 champs? Could be confusing to the casual fans and they are the ones who generate money to the sport.

by open24hrz on Feb 4, 2009 12:04 PM EST up reply actions

open24..that was a great point. thats what i’ve been thinking for a while. although i dont think it’ll discredit the sport too much whichever way this fight goes, but the LHW belt has changed hands too much too soon. and hopefully its going to again really soon, and then stay put. cuz i hate evans.
off topic, sorry.

by OJR on Feb 4, 2009 12:09 PM EST up reply actions

GSP by whatever he wants???? Well he doesn’t want a standing fight with anyone since he is afraid to get knockout.

So what he wants to do is lay on people and use his power and take downs to win. I get the feeling we are never going to see GSP finish someone on his feet again. He way he bea Serra and Penn. Get use to it.

by Gankaho on Feb 4, 2009 12:17 PM EST up reply actions

Cause Fitch sucks on his feet.

by BNF on Feb 4, 2009 12:22 PM EST up reply actions

gsp would have stopped bj if not for him quitting. who cares if it’s on the feet or on the ground. submitting a fighter is just as impressive to me as a ko. gsp is not a boring lay-n-pray fighter. he’s constantly trying to pass the guard, using elbows, punches and knees to the body. gsp and boring do not belong in the same sentence.

by b.w. on Feb 4, 2009 2:03 PM EST up reply actions

Fitch isn’t bad on the feet. He’s no Alves for sure, but he isn’t bad. Im not sure why people are complaining about GSP not knocking people out on the feet. If you want to see a standing KO in every fight, you are a boxing fan, and are watching the wrong sport.

by c-war on Feb 4, 2009 2:10 PM EST up reply actions

I am just hating. GSP is my new favorite fighter to hate. :) His fights are not always boring, but they are forgetable.

by BNF on Feb 4, 2009 2:33 PM EST up reply actions

by The Anomaly on Feb 4, 2009 4:49 PM EST up reply actions

He mixes his game up to his advantage. He gives us a bit if boxing, then he takes it to the mat and does work. Not the most exciting “strat-a-gee”, but its smart and it work well for him. I still feel that we will see some highlights from the standing position. Just maybe not against highly dangerous stand-up fighters. Don’t forget about the Finch clinic.

by DH on Feb 4, 2009 12:20 PM EST up reply actions

Lay on people and use his power and takedowns to win. You are mistaking the old Sean Sherk for GSP I think S Dubs. I think GSP does a lot more than that. You sound a little bitter. You also sound a bit like Fitch did before he got his @ss kicked.

by Ade on Feb 4, 2009 12:42 PM EST up reply actions

Decided to use Penn and Serra as examples and skip over Fitch? George rocked Fitch in the stand up so many times in that fight I lost count. GSP knows when to let his hands go and when to take a fight to the ground, thats what makes him great. His GnP isn’t just lay n prey boredom, he’s not just blanketing the guy, he’s usually pounding away. Look at Fitch’s face after his fight with GSP, check all the knee’s to Matt Serra’s ribs in their fight. He’s got a very active ground game; there’s no reason to abandon it just to turn this into a kick boxing match.

by O damn he got caught on Feb 4, 2009 12:54 PM EST up reply actions

GSP must take Thiago down asap because of his punching power.
The issue is warap if he can’t take him down. GSP is amazing but doesn’t have Thiago’s power. Standing I think GSP is at risk to get knock out. But now that I remember KOS survive standig there with Thiago so GSP can too.

by league on Feb 4, 2009 12:18 PM EST up reply actions

This is the fight I am most looking forward to this year!! My 4 favourite fighters are GSP, Alves, Bisping and Rampage, so to have these two go at it is SIIIKKK!!

I think Alves gets the KO win, he will be able to defend the take-down (which GSP will shoot for straight away) for about a round or half a round, which I think is enough for Alves to punish GSP so that he is disorientated.

by Adam on Feb 4, 2009 1:27 PM EST up reply actions

Didn’t you learn anything from the GSP-Penn fight?

GSP clinched and basically faked takedown attempts just to tire BJ in the first round. Then jabbed him. Then took him down for real when the time was right.

GSP will tire Alves’ legs first like he tired Penn’s shoulders. Then he’ll bring Alves in his world.

by LJ on Feb 4, 2009 1:57 PM EST up reply actions

that’s not gonna happen.. Thiago is on a totally different level than BJ is, it’s gonna be hard for GSP to take him down without getting punished, Hughes and Kos tried and was anything but succesful in their attempts.. this is gonna be GSP’s toughest fight of his career for sure!

exactly! he looked even bigger than chuck haha, like 2 weight classes apart! that dude is huge. i saw in another thread someome mentioning that GSP was at 190 in fight night against BJ but i think that’s way too much, i’m not sure he even was at 180

by El_Santo on Feb 4, 2009 12:42 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, but don’t forget, Alves did not cut to 170 the day before.

by DJ on Feb 4, 2009 12:56 PM EST up reply actions

I hope that he makes weight. I am still disappointed from the whole Matt Hughes thing. Hughes was put in a bad spot with Alves not even coming close to making weight. He did the right thing looking out for the company and got a nice long layoff for it. He probably would have lost anyway, don’t get me wrong, but it just takes something away from the fight if someone doesn’t make weight.

by Shadyone33 on Feb 4, 2009 1:03 PM EST up reply actions

Alves also took that fight on short notice and informed the ufc that he wasn’t going to make weight because of it. He made weight against koscheck. He should be able to make weight.

by onthebutton336 on Feb 4, 2009 1:16 PM EST up reply actions

I could be wrong but I think Alves was training to fight Sanchez already. I think that Sanchez pulled out with an injury and Kos stepped in. He did make weight though, you’re right. I just hope that there’s no controversy.

by Shadyone33 on Feb 4, 2009 1:23 PM EST up reply actions

Informing the UFC you would not make weight is not even an excuse. I agree, I was dissapointed when he failed to make weight agaisnt Matt Hughes. Not that I don’t think Alves couldn’t beat HUghes, but I don’t consider those types of fights to count as wins.

by c-war on Feb 4, 2009 2:18 PM EST up reply actions

Against Kos he made 171, he won’t be able to that for a title fight. The Problem with Alves is he try’s to be as big as possible by fight time. Only problem with that is if he gets hurt or has any setback during training (like the Hughes fight) he will be in danger of not making weight.

He should either lower the amount of weight he is cutting from by about 5 pounds or move to middle weight.

by JSP on Feb 4, 2009 3:41 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I agree JSP. It would suck if he can’t make weight and they put GSP in the same spot as Hughes. I don’t think that the result will be the same, but I hope they have a good co-main event so that they can drop this fight from the card. If he can’t make the weight they should banish him from the WW division. I know this is the biggest opportunity of his career, but so was Hughes…Excuse or not he missed bad.

by Shadyone33 on Feb 4, 2009 3:53 PM EST up reply actions

Thiago ALves been my boy for a while and im gonna go out on a limb and say he wins this fight by KO. He did great against KOS who in my opinion had done the best against GSP recently. Alves has had a lot of time to prepare and his takedown defense is only getting better. He has to keep this fight standing if he wants to win. Assuming he makes weight of course.

by JRV on Feb 4, 2009 12:00 PM EST reply actions

I think that GSP fought a VERY conservative fight with Kos because he wanted to build his confidence. GSP didn’t take many risks and Kos only survived the fight because of his guard. For some reason GSP could not pass.

This fight even though I’m a huge Alves fan.. is more in favor for GSP to win.. GSP is a super athletic.. and a smart mans fighter.. I agree with the above comment that mentions how if Alves does Knock GSP out.. would be early.. it’s not easy.. but you have to bring the fight to GSP.. ALves could it.. but the thing is GSP is getting better and better.. we all have not seen the best GSP.. I knew once he fought Fitch.. how he fought Fitch.. that his evolution can make him the premier fighter at 170. This will not be a cake walk for either one.. but if were to place a bet I would put my $ on GSP.

Think this fight will go down in Montreal? Alves is a tougher opponent than Penn. I’ve thought so since they booked GSP vs Penn. Nevertheless, Georges will successfully defend in a unanimous decision. Bonus points if he submits the tough Brazilian. Belt is staying in Canada for a while

GSP all the way. He’ll do what he always does and that’s have a great game plan. He’s made a career beating other fighters at the strongest area of their abilities. Not to mention Thiago will gas with the amount of pressure GSP will put on him. The only remote chance he has of winning in by 1st round ko.

by Stevo on Feb 4, 2009 12:13 PM EST reply actions

I’m not sure about this. I thought Thiago’s gas tank is suspect too until the Kos fight where Kos put a tremendous amount of pressure on Thiago but he managed to gut out a decision. Kos was coming forward even when his leg was torn to shreds by Thiago’s leg kicks.

by bostonmmajunkie on Feb 4, 2009 12:24 PM EST up reply actions

GSP will put more pressure on him than Kos. GSP changes levels and has a much more complex game. And don’t forget that Kos took that fight on a week or 2 notice. Not that I think Kos was compromised too much, but it’s not like he had 12 weeks to prepare for a specific opponent.

Well finally we get to talk about something new for GSP and I hope that is an a$$ beating. Alves is huge and has been concentrating on TD defense since before the Hughes fight and then for Diego/Kos fight. Now a few more months and think think he has a good shot. Granted, he is very beatable he has been improving a great deal and I think he feels like this is his time. Alves by TKO!!!!!

A question for you Canadian GSP fans. Are you guys a little upset GSP is not headlining UFC 97? He took no damage agaisn’t BJ and if he beat Alves there he could possibly fight Anderson at 100?

by BNF on Feb 4, 2009 12:13 PM EST reply actions

Not really, I’m not sure if Dana really said this or not but I heard that they want to see how a fight goes over in Montreal without GSP being the headliner.

Plus Anderson, Chuck, Shogun, and the return of the Crow isn’t to bad in my books.

Who cares if there is no GSP?? There is Chuck, Silva and Shogun on the same card. The only thing better than seeing Chuck kick Shogun’s ass right out of the UFC would be if they reassembled BJ Penn and GSP gave him another ass stomping at the Bell Center.

by stevo on Feb 4, 2009 1:02 PM EST up reply actions

Crap, I didn’t see this comment before I posted above. I think that Dana doesn’t want to load up the card too much. Personally it wouldn’t stop me from going. I’m getting married in June otherwise I’d be there like I was for the GSP fight. I think that if the UFC puts quality cards in Montreal they’ll always do well. I know that if they put some of the stinker cards that they do in the UK they may not do so well after a while.

Not at all actually…I was there when he beat Serra and it was crazy but I’m 5-6 hrs away in S. Ontario so its not a short trip…however, if I was in Montreal or had tickets for 97 expecting to see GSP I might be a little pissed….When he beat Serra it was an amazing atmosphere due mostly to the fact that we were almost 100% positive he would win, and we would party…this is obviously a different much more difficult fight for him so I’m almost happy I won’t be there just in case the shit hits the fan (which I don’t think it will)…if ya know what I mean

I dont know why people say he has the better stand up and can KO GSP. GSP has as good of a stand up or even better and can also KO Alves. GSP is too smart of an opponent for Alves, He WILL take him down and G&P for a TKO in round 2. Thiago is an awesome fighter but does not have the tools to outsmart and outplan GSP.

by Don on Feb 4, 2009 12:16 PM EST reply actions

This is going to ge the toughest challenge for GSP so far in his career. I already see a lot of people are underestimating Thiago but he is a very game fighter and very good striker. I’ve watched him very closely since he has been in the UFC and he has steadily been improving and evolving. He was able to neutralize Hughes and Koschecks takedown defense. He has a very good chance at KOing GSP given his size and strength. I mean that left hook flash knockdown of Koscheck really impressed me and seemingly came out of nowhere. Anyways, I’m looking forward to this fight and its going to be much better test for GSP than Penn.

IMO, Fitch was/is a tougher fight than this; he’s the better all around fighter, he’s got a complete game, and he’s probably the only WW that could give George a run for his money in a rematch (assuming Fitch can improve his overall game that much). I’m not completely counting out Alves, anything can happen but GSP wants this fight on the ground and thats where its going.

by ftg314 on Feb 4, 2009 9:26 PM EST up reply actions

I think GSP/Greg Jackson are on a different level with the game planning. He systematically took BJ Penn out and I am sure they will do the same to Alves. Alves has power and a quick knockout is a possibility but I see GSP taking him down and being relentless to tire him out early and picking him apart in the later rounds.

by G3 on Feb 4, 2009 1:07 PM EST reply actions

The whole size thickness thing is laughable when you consider gsp used to train with heavyweight olympic wrestlers and takes rashad evans and jardine down at will. Its not all about weight, big f**king deal its not a bodybuilding contest, thiago hasn’t fought anyone close to gsp and the last time he did, jon fitch he lost. Half of the people on this site thought penn would destroy gsp in under 3 rounds and look what happened, gsp doesn’t fight with the other fighters strengths. People are making way too much over the slight weight advantage, 5’9 200 thiago vs 5’10 187 gsp. I see thiago’s only advantage is how hard he kicks and his powerfull knees, IMO gsp is better than him in every way, heavier doesn’t always mean stronger. Who knows what to expect in this fight thiago might t(ko) gsp or gsp might walk right threw him like he did his last 5 opponents only time will tell.

by nathan on Feb 4, 2009 1:18 PM EST reply actions

i have to agree on the “early KO or nothing”

Alves is good and GsP seems untouchable but people have seen what serra could do – if serra didnt pull that off he was screwed aswell. in my opinion ofcourse :)

by MMA040 on Feb 4, 2009 1:25 PM EST reply actions

this is so true…..lets not forget that GSP is beatable! Matt Sera thrashed GSP at one point and although GSP has improved much mentally and physically since then, he is still beatable. Thiago definately has the ability to neutrilize GSP strength that is for sure. The big question is not if he can stop GSP’s takedown, but can he do it all night long? I say Alves best shot is to bum rush GSP and see how GSP handels getting pressured. I do not recall anyone ever rushing “Rush” lol…would be interesting and make for a good but quick fight either way.

by Chadx23 on Feb 4, 2009 2:54 PM EST up reply actions

at serra vs gsp 2 – i noticed that GsP hardly goes for a takedown out of his own. he wait till opponent throws a punch avoid it and then go for the takedown, im pretty sure he will do the same to Alves (he will know about the Knee incident with hughes) i dont think GsP is going to standup with him and invite a Rush.

he will propably make up another scientific explanation how to beat Alves :P (after the penn fight i laughed real hard with his “wearing out shoulder to stop bloodflow to make the muscles tired” etc i dont know what he was on about but it was kind of funny at that moment). made me think about this russian guy from a old rocky movie – training in a Lab

anyways got love for both fighters – but GsP’s experience is going to take this one imo.

by MMA040 on Feb 5, 2009 6:23 AM EST up reply actions

GSP will probably win this fight but Alves brings a different element he has vicious knees, if I remember correctly Hughes was fainted/going for a takedown when out of nowhere Alves landed the knee that ended the fight, and GSP has a soft chin as seen with Serra. Plus Alve knees are deadly was Karo who up to that poimt had never been KO’ed. and he dropped like a rag doll, and that knee came out of nowhere.

by hk on Feb 4, 2009 1:28 PM EST reply actions

To be honest, I think Alves has a great shot at knocking St. Pierre out. Alves is actually bigger than GSP and is kind of in the mold of an old Liddell (without the leg kicks and knees) in the sense that he has great TDD along with superior striking. Now I am not saying he’s definitely going to beat GSP but he’s the only one in the WW division that I think can give GSP a run for his money.

On a side note, imagine if Penn had beaten GSP and had to fight alves for the title. IMO Penn would be helpless especially now seeing how he deals with guys that are much bigger than him. He would have had to stand and trade with Thiago because I doubt BJ would be able to get him to the ground and Alves would murder him on the feet.

Can’t wait for this fight though. It all comes down to whether Alves can keep it standing because they match each other in size and athleticism but one is superior in wrestling and the other in striking.

by San Jose Rob on Feb 4, 2009 2:08 PM EST reply actions

Alves is going to lose and here is how the fight will go: 1st round GSP gets the clinch and goes for the takedown, alves resists but eventually gets taken down. round two GSP comes out swinging and Alves looks sharp on his feet but forgets about the takedowns and finds himself on his back for most of the round. By Round 3 Alves is starting to look weary and beat up. GSP gets the early takedown and wins in Round 3 by TKO or SUB.

I think Thiago learned from BJ that the way to prepare to beat GSP is to invest in your training and not in your smack talk. :)

No one’s saying that Thiago can’t knock out anyone, including an oak tree. He’s got serious punch.

I just find this fight a lot like the Horn vs. Liddell bout when everyone was saying that if anyone had the tools to beat Chuck it was Horn, and that Horn would be able to work his strengths to maximum effect against Chuck’s weaknesses.

I think GSP is the most complete fighter in MMA, and it’s tough to predict that his supposed weakness is so inferior to Alves’ that it will determine the fight. He has so many tools to win this, and even though he may not be kicking people’s heads off a la Napao vs. Cro Cop, he’s STILL beating the everliving tar out of them.

A one punch knockout is fun to see, but his domination of BJ that broke his will is a TKO on a completely other level.

I think it will be fun to watch. I just hope Alves doesn’t BJ his preparation and come in over weight- I’d love to see him at his absolute best because you know that’s what GSP will be come fight time. Could be a scrap for the ages…

by Paulska on Feb 4, 2009 2:44 PM EST reply actions

Horn was too small for Chuck and got embarassed trying to take Chuck down over and over while getting tooled and thrashed by Liddell for 4 rounds until he couldn’t see anymore lol! All that said, he didn’t take Chuck down one time in that fight and that proved Liddell had changed from the first fight where he rolled with Horn and got choked out.

So are you saying GSP is like Chuck and ALves is like Horn or vice versa?

by Chadx23 on Feb 4, 2009 2:59 PM EST up reply actions

I’m thinking that GSP is the Chuck to Alves’ Horn. There’s no question Alves has skills, just like Horn did. I just wonder if GSP’s game just isn’t at a level that no one else can compete with right now.

The only guys that have any shot at beating GSP at 170 are those with great stand up/KO power and way above average TD defense. Alves does fit that mold, so he has a shot. But it’s a very small shot.

Don’t think Fitch will ever challenge GSP unless his stand-up gets light years better and don’t know if that’s possible this late in the game for him.

Who does that leave at 170. Mike Swick? GSP is one fight away from being the Anderson Silva of his division. At the same time, he is one strike away from it all collapsing around him.

Any thoughts on who the top 5 strikers are at WW that have complete enough games that they can’t be taken down at will by great wrestlers.

1. GSP
2. Alves
3. Mike Swick
4. Koscheck
5. ???

First of all gets your facts right, hughes did thiago down but couldn’t do anything with it, koscheck had a horrible game plan and only tried take downs out of desperating against the fence. Since it was only a kick boxing match thiago was fresh and harder to take down.

Secondly only penn was the noticeably smaller/weaker fighter than gsp in there last 5 fights. Fitch, hughes and koscheck are just as big as gsp around 185-190, serra is thicker than gsp, not sure his walking around weight and penn is a natural light weight who should still to 155.

Just because thiago is 10-15lbs heavier than gsp means shit, your assuming he’s stronger because he’s heavier, keith jardine who spars and wrestles with gsp said gsp is stronger than most light heavy weights. Gsp wrestled with the heavy weight canadian olympic team and takes jardine and rashade evans down almost at will-light heavyweights and he won’t get thiago alves down??? You need to face reality this will be alves toughest fight of his life and he stands a very good chance at getting run over again, like gsp’s last 5 opponents.

Gsp is no koscheck, he’s intelligent, has excellent game plans, Is better than koscheck in every way and fights a fighter against there weakness’s. He’s not stupid and knows how hard thiago kicks and knee’s, ever since serra upset gsp, he surprises people with each of his fights, half the people here said penn would walk right through gsp on the ground and standing.

Gsp destroyed penn, honestly I wouldn’t be surprised at all if walks right threw thiago either, I was very surprised how he beat penn, I’m a gsp fan and each time he does better than I expect only the first serra fight. This is MMA and anything can happen but to count gsp out in this fight is just dumb.

Thiago has taken his ttd to a scary level. I believe he’s much different from the Fitch fight. It’s been obvious watching him fight Hughes and Koscheck. He’s going to kick GSP’s legs from under him over the first two rounds and knock him out later in the fight. That said, I really enjoy watching both fighters, and won’t be disappointed with either winning.

by AA on Feb 4, 2009 5:01 PM EST reply actions

First Thiago has to make weight, which I’m sure he will, as far as stand up skills I’ll say GSP. Power, thats easy Alves. Kicks I give to Georges. Leg kicks, Alves. Wrestling, easy Georges The question that needs to be answered is will Alves be able to keep Georges from taking him down. I’m not really sure either way how a stand up war would end, I know how I would like it to end. But if Georges takes Alves down…It’s over. Maybe not immediately, but Alves will be taking damage and in the end he’ll be just another beatdown victim of the Champ. JMO.

by SluggerCitySoldier on Feb 4, 2009 8:17 PM EST reply actions

GSP would’ve destroyed Alves like he did Hughes, Serra, Fitch and Penn.

Now that he’s pissed because of the Vaseline comedy, he will obliterate Alves (obliterate being more severe than destroy on the fight adjectives scale).

Alves has a great takedown defense? So did Fitch and Penn.

Alves’ striking is off the charts? So was Penn’s.

GSP does what he does: plan and execute.

“GSP by whatever he wants” is the only outcome possible.

I really hope GSP puts this guy away. I don’t want any obvious roid monkey as the champion. It’s just bad for the sport.

Alves needs to be randomly tested frequently all the way up to the fight. If he passed every test and came in looking like he has in his past couple fights I’d be shocked.

I find it interesting that the only time fighters ever get popped for a positive test is AFTER a fight. They should be doing these tests more before the fights. Not only would they be suspended for a year they would lose out on the money from the fight.

I realize there is a reason the UFC would hate for that to happen, as it would ruin whatever fight they had set up, but it’s the right thing to do.

The guy really doesnt look even remotely close to 170 but if he can cut to make weight without sapping himself of all the energy hes going to need then so be it. I really think it will catch up top him. He will end up moving up a weight class at some point imo.

GSP will frusturate Alves. Alves will come in with a game plan that he will be timid and waiting for GSP to shoot so he can stuff it or bring his knee’s up or go for the big KO. I think GSP will turn it into Alves favor and try making it a stand up game for the first 2 rnds. Fake the shoot and watch Alves defense and see how he reacts, if he makes any kinds of mistakes with the fake takedowns, he will pepper him with jabs, leg kicks, or clinch him and pop a knee on Alves face. Alves best be is to bumrush RUSH and try to take him out of his game plan. If not we know eventually GSP will take him down and GNP him or sub him

I think the only chance that the Alves has is to KO GSP. However, GSP has very good wrestling and I was impressed with his ability to keep BJ at bay. Its funny how a lot of guys are saying that GSP has the best wrestling in MMA, I don’t think so. Some of these fans need to take a look at Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto. When he starts fghting again you will see that he is one of the top 5 pound for pound fighters in the world!!! His only loss is due to a cut early in the fight.
