Denis Kang to return at UFC 97 against Xavier Foupa-Pokum

Denis Kang (31-11-1) will look to score redeem himself inside the Octagon when he takes on promotional newcomer Xavier Foupa-Pokum (20-9) at UFC 97 at The Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on April 18.
It will be a home game of sorts for the PRIDE Welterweight Grand Prix 2006 runner-up -- he is a Canadian citizen despite his South Korean roots. Kang was a big acquisition for the promotion, signing a four-fight deal prior to his debut against Alan Belcher at UFC 93: "Franklin vs. Henderson" just last month.
He was a heavy favorite and started out strong; however, "The Talent" hung in and eventually sunk in a fight-ending guillotine choke on the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt in the waning seconds of round two.
Prior to the loss, Kang -- who enjoyed success primarily in Japan and Korea fighting in the Pride FC and Spirit MC organizations — was on a two-fight win streak after losing back-to-back matches. He has lost four of last seven fights dating back to late 2006.
Kang was once considered a top-ranked player in the division and a serious threat to reigning UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva. He’ll need to get back in the win column sooner rather than later to earn back that reputation … and it starts with Foupa-Pokum.
A Cage Rage and Palace Fighting Championship (PFC) veteran, Foupa-Pokum is on a six-fight win streak. In fact, he has dropped just one fight in his last 12 attempts – s submission loss to Murilo "Ninja" Rua back in December 2007.
The French fighter has a nice mix of submissions and (technical) knockouts on his resume. He is definitely an experienced, capable and dangerous fighter Kang -- who needs a win bad here -- cannot underestimate.
In the UFC 97 main event, Anderson Silva will put his 185-pound title on the line against number one division contender, Thales Leites. In the co-main event, Mauricio Rua -- fresh off his less-than-thrilling victory over Mark "The Hammer" Coleman at UFC 93 --will challenge former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell.

Never even heard of Foupa-Pokum but I think it was John that said this guy isn’t too shabby

Hopefully Kang gets the win here. I love to see him fight and now the UFC jitters are hopefully over he can go on a tear up the ranks.
We all know he was winning the belcher fight. If I have a criticism it is he does make the odd random drastic mistake which ends up losing him the fight. I cant remember ever seeing him get walked over and ussually looks v.good in all his losses too…if that makes sense.
A focused Kang should have this one in the bag.

Prof X via exciting finish at least for the sake of french MMA. Him, Cyrille and Kongo have done big things to it legalized over there. Always gotta give props to guys helping take this thing to all corners of the world.

I say that having the last name Foupa-Pokum would’ve been a nightmare growing up.

Good, now Kimjoke can start to realize what he’s really worth and do TUF. He’ll never see another pay day even close to what he saw at Elite.

McArthur. Foupa-Pokum or Professor X as he’s known is total class. He was giving Ninja a bit of a beating until he got caught in a sub and that was back in 07 when Ninja was quality!
This is a really though 2nd fight for Kang who I’m guessing will still be the favorite but I fancy Pro X’s chances!
by MoonUK on Feb 4, 2009 4:37 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah professor X is very confident on the feet. I have seen his fights in Cage Rage and he is definately impressive. Kang has to be on his game to make sure of the victory.
I couldn’t bare to see Kang lose again in front of the UFC fans…I think he is too good for that.
by Ca$z on Feb 4, 2009 5:17 PM EST up reply actions
I would have given Professor X a very good chance of betting Belcher, thats how dangerous I believe this fight is for Kang.

BTW…does anyone else think Kang looks like Data from Star Trek

a little bit old but it will be nice to see how kang has adjusted to the octagon. if he loses i say he just sucks. he can still be a gatekeeper.

What a disappointment this guy is! He starts off strong, then gasses out and loses! With all his experience, he should have better cardio and shouldn’t have gotten careless and caught in a guillotine! He would get killed by A.Silva.

So if Chuck beats Shogun does he get a title shot ala Forrest Griffin style??
by O damn he got caught on Feb 4, 2009 3:45 PM EST reply actions
Come on man… Lame. But maybe they can fight after Forrest’s hand heals. That would be a money maker for sure.
by BNF on Feb 4, 2009 3:46 PM EST up reply actions
Winner of Chuck/Shogun fights Forrest, I like the idea, and would take either fighter over Griffin =P

I’d like to see Jones/Forest…it may seem to be a big jump from Bonnar to Forest but I don’t think it would matter…thoughts?
by McArthur on Feb 4, 2009 4:05 PM EST up reply actions
ufc wont put forrest in a position to fight a relatively unknown guy when they have money matchups with forrest as co-main event, chuck, jardine, rampage, machida, thiago silva. all potential money making fights for forrest’s return where if forrest would lose hes still not gonna drop to far down
by randy murders on Feb 4, 2009 4:10 PM EST up reply actions
Forrest is Garbage! He is a product of good gameplanning! You cant be a top dog at 205 if you cant finish a fight!
Fans bag on Machida, but does anyone actually think Forrest couuld have finished tHiago? I sure dont!
by john on Feb 4, 2009 4:11 PM EST up reply actions
agreed Randy although I feel that is unfortunate
by McArthur on Feb 4, 2009 4:13 PM EST up reply actions
JOHN. your opinion on forrest is GARBAGE. he doesn’t finish fights? he finished your boy slow-gun pretty decisively didn’t he? bring the excuses………
by b.w. on Feb 4, 2009 4:20 PM EST up reply actions
He can’t stand Forrest; doesn’t mean John doesn’t know what he’s talkin about, there’s plenty of good fighters that I don’t have anything good to say about; ie: Machida. Besides, when’s the last time you brought any news to the table before it was posted on mania??
I also think Griffin is overrated, I think he beat a gimpy Shogun and a not in his right mind/out of shape Rampage. 1 pump chump gets TKO’d by the next guy to challenge for the belt. Thats just my opinion though; I know the guy has fans, I’m just not one of them.
by O damn he got caught on Feb 4, 2009 4:53 PM EST up reply actions
besides the shogun choke out in the last 15 seconds of the fight… whens the last time forrest finished anybody? heres your answer: Elvis Sinosic October 7, 2005… ohhh he sounds like a big time finisher of fights to me! only three and a half years, no biggie…
by brendan on Feb 4, 2009 5:06 PM EST up reply actions
Get over the fight finishing complaint! How many boring fights has Forrest been in? In his UFC career, only 1 – Hector Ramirez. For a guy with as many fights as he’s had, not many guys can say that. He works as hard or harder than anyone else in MMA despite not being the most naturally gifted individual. I’ll take that over talent and no work ethic any day.
by GregC on Feb 4, 2009 5:16 PM EST up reply actions
Thank you boys! 1 pump chump! THats all he will EVER be at LHW!!! I dont have to respect that crap! I love GSP, but I said the same thing about him, until he successfully defended his title!
Just like NFL, you can be a great player, but you dont get Immortalized until you win a superbowl… U aint champion until you defend your title!
Only thing good I have to say about Forrest is that he is a hard worker, he has heart and he implements game plans really well. I dont care much for his skill set!
Defend your title, better yet Finish a fight, and maybe I will show him some love!
That Shogun crap is getting Old BW! Shogun is one of my favorites, but he was in worst shape for the Forrest fight then he was for the coleman fight. at least he had an acl in the coleman fight….and all you did after the coleman fight was bash Shogun’s winning performance….saying how terrible he looked, but whenever I talk bad about Forrets, u start blowing him and talking about how you were impressed with his performance against Shogun. Get real!
If you arent impressed with his winning performance against Coleman, how can you be impressed by him finishing Shogun, when he was in much worst shape against Forrest then he was in the shogun fight.
dont even bother responding to this post, because nothing you can say, will diminish this post!
B.w you are my boy, but I just OWNED YOU in this debate! lol try debating me on another topic my friend, cause this is a battle that you can not win!

JOHN. your FORREST crap is getting alot older! you are the one who constantly bags on forrest, everytime someone mentions his name. this thread isn’t even about forrest, but you just couldn’t help yourself. i know you have a vendetta against forrest, so every time you dog him, im going to be right there on your a$$. one pump chump? what does that mean? is that some sort of hip-hop lingo that i dont get. yeah you really got the best of me in this. HA! forrest would have stopped coleman in 1 rnd that night. shogun too. keep bringing the excuses though, maybee someday rua will show up in shape. p.s. he spanked rampage as well. :)
by b.w. on Feb 4, 2009 6:01 PM EST up reply actions
you call that getting spanked?he barely won if you even want to give him the win.
by roy on Feb 4, 2009 6:20 PM EST up reply actions
Forrest wouldnt finish anyone! get over it! 1 pump chump, means win the title and lose it right away without defending it!
Lets look at top UFC LHW:
Rampage: Finishes fights
Shogun: finished plenty of fights
Rashad: Is NOW finishing fights, thus I respect him now!
Thiago Silva: finishes fights
Machida: Did you watch the Thiago Silva fight? nuff said
Liddell: Finishes fights
Wanderlei: Finishes fights
Franklin: Finished plenty of fighters
Henderson: Finished many fighters
But Forrest cantbus a grape! He is the Only top 10 fighter who cant END a fight! How could I possibly like him?
I am not even sold on him beating Bonnar at the TUF Finale!
You can reply all u want, but you and I both know that I OWNED YOU on this debate! Just admit it and we can drop it. YOu have plenty of chances to debate me on other topics in the future. Just admit it!

by McArthur on Feb 4, 2009 7:15 PM EST up reply actions
JOHN. what debate? this is just you ranting. one pump chump? i still dont get it. i thought maybe this was describing how you beat off with a pair of tweezers. i guess with your description that BIG NOG is a 1 pump chump. he won the ufc title without ever defending it, right?. i guess what it boils down to is that your still pi$$ed that you bet against forrest and lost big, you guaranteed he would lose to shogun and he didn’t, you guaranteed he would get koed in 1 rnd against rampage and he didn’t and you guaranteed that you would leave this site forever if forrest won and you didn’t. what, you dont think i remember that? who won this so called “debate”. bye “looser”.
by b.w. on Feb 4, 2009 8:07 PM EST up reply actions
How can you debate whether or not you like someone? I’m sorry, but that’s not a debate, it’s called opinion. I think someone not finishing fights is a stupid reason to hate on them when they are consistently exciting. However, it’s opinion and you’re welcome to yours. But there’s no debate here.
by GregC on Feb 4, 2009 8:13 PM EST up reply actions
john is just p*ssed that both his boys (Rampage and Shogun) “the fight finishers” couldnt finish Forrest!
by JV on Feb 4, 2009 8:54 PM EST up reply actions
JV. john keeps telling me to be “a man” and own up to “loosing” ths debate. anyone can go to the search engine on this site, type ufc 86 go to UFC 86: VIDEO THE WAIT IS OVER…ALMOST. his exact quote "if rampage “looses” this fight, i will never come to this again! thats how sure i am about this fight, iv’e got $1200 bet on rampage that will win me $500. saying that i am confident about this outcome is an understatement!" i felt like bringing this up the night of the fight, but decided i would let john off the hook, b/c he is just a young man with a big mouth, but not a bad dude. well he brought up the “be a man” quote 1 too many times. a person that lives up to their word is what i call “being a man”. JOHN. this is what happens when you mess with the bull, you get the horns. BOOM!

I love how the UFC haters (you know who you are) automatically said Kang was going to kill Belcher, easy, and ridiculed anyone who thought otherwise. He is pretty good, but losing 4 of you last 7 isn’t.
by BNF on Feb 4, 2009 3:52 PM EST reply actions
I thought Kang was going to kill Belcher too; but it’s more a case of me disliking Belcher than hating the UFC.
by O damn he got caught on Feb 4, 2009 3:55 PM EST up reply actions
I wasn’t talking about you guys. I have liked Belcher ever since he put the goats vagaina on Kalib’s head. :) I picked him to win, but I am absolutly positive Kang did some damage, judging by the way Alan was talking in his post fight interview.
by BNF on Feb 4, 2009 4:23 PM EST up reply actions
lol Kang just made a stupid amateur mistake like he loves to do… he was dominating that fight up until the point he went for that take down… belcher really had nothing for him until then, you cant disagree with that, he takes the rematch 9/10 times
by brendan on Feb 4, 2009 5:08 PM EST up reply actions
Brendan knows the truth. He owned Belcher until he gave him his neck. It was his first fight in the UFC and the nerves must be a lot to deal with and it drains a lot of fighters. Especially the ones who are highly touted and are expected to perform.
Besides the other losses were to Akiyama, Misaki and Mousassi. No shame in that and he never gets beaten up he just makes a silly mistake.
by Ca$z on Feb 4, 2009 5:26 PM EST up reply actions
Kang is a very good fighter, who like Ca4Z pointed out usually loses due to a silly mistake, but his recent losses (besides Belcher “the self proclaimed title contender” lmao) have all come to great fighters. NO shame in that, I promise he will be a great addition to the UFC’s middleweight division!
by john on Feb 4, 2009 6:53 PM EST up reply actions
i hate most outside the ufc fighters and think they all are overrated but i thought kang would run through belcher too i think belcher got lucky and flatout sucks at life
