I have mixed fealings about this. There have been complaints in the past by other fighters that they felt GSP was a little too slippery, but they have been unwarrented up until this point. The bottom line is the commission was right there in GSP’s corner and they say it was a miniscule amount of vasciline that was promptly removed and wiped off hard. If the commission feels that it does not warrent an investigation then there shouldn’t be an investigation. Ultimatley it’s up to NSAC. They were there and they have the final say.

I think the solution is for each fighter to have their own personal attendant to wipe them down between rounds- and after the fight. I assure you that if I were Georges’s personal attendant I would do an extremely thorough job.

As someone who implements the rubber guard I must say we use this guard to avoid strikes or adjust to an uma plata. GSP clearly whipped BJ which I thought would be impossible. When reviewing the fight after the allegations it is clear that GSP was slippery. I don’t know if it would have changed the fight outcome, but I noticed the following:
GSP started by grabbing the shorts (cheating)
GSP was rubbed down between rounds 1-2 (with petroleum jelly)
GSP was rubbed down again (although it only shows the commission shouting at them and wipe him down, and you see greg jackson stick something into his pocket
The final thing I noticed was the blows behind the head…ouch.

It was my understanding that BJ alerted the commission pre-fight to check for greasing. That’s why they were able to catch him between rounds. I heard BJ was told about the greasiness by Serra prior to the fight. (I read this on another site) Go MIR!!!

I read some of the comments and I’m probably just going to echo what someone else said, but I’m going to say my piece anyway.

I do not think that the vaseline thing was done on purpose. In this case, I don’t think it was a factor in the fight. It looks like it was 3 fingers that rubbed what couldn’t have been a lot. If I’m correct it happened between round 2 and 3 in which GSP had Penn down for the whole round anyway and Penn couldn’t use his leg because I think that GSP was using posturing to avoid it. When GSP was passing at will during the 3rd and 4th round, it was more of him just popping his leg out than anything to do with the back. I could be wrong and there may be others that saw things differently.

With regards to other fighters bringing this up now, it sounds like sour grapes. Some people are talking about fights from years ago.

I do think that this does happen with other fighers and I could swear that I’ve seen folks getting rubbed off before rounds before. This may end up being a good thing. Maybe other fighers that have done this inadvertently will change what they’re doing because I don’t think that anyone wants to gain an unfair advantage. Especially someone that is so respectful to the sport and others. GSP is someone that talks a lot about respect and challenging himself. Greasing or cheating would defeat that purpose.

Lucky for Hughes that GSP used grease. Otherwise, GSPs foot would still be stuck in his ass.

Just like the fight was overhyped, so is this vaseline thing. Look at Dana after the fight. He did not say great fight for GSP only questioned the vaseline incident. dana overhyped this fight like crazy , looked bad in the end then tried to cover up with excuses.
