Interesting to see that the athletic commission and Dana new about the vasoline right away. I don’t think it would have changed the outcome of the fight but it will be interesting to see how this plays out. Rematch?

Nope. One beating is enough for BJ!

by OJR on Feb 2, 2009 10:02 AM EST up reply actions

one beating is def enough ! bj is a joke and this only adds to the joke that surrounds him. gsp dominated him and bj should be thankful he can still walk and talk after saturday night !

by mark hynes on Feb 2, 2009 10:05 AM EST up reply actions

Why is BJ a joke? He moved up in weight and lost to a bigger man. He runs through people at 155…
anyway cool blog, I like to see the reaction’s of Lorenzo and Dana during the fights….

by Robert(1) on Feb 2, 2009 11:20 AM EST up reply actions

BJ is not a joke. There is no shame in losing to a superior athlete like GSP who is also naturally bigger and stronger.

Stop hating!

by OJR on Feb 2, 2009 11:41 AM EST up reply actions

He is a joke because he talked a lot of crap about GSP being a “quitter” and “fight to the death”, and then quit himself after 4 rounds. Hyping a fight is one thing, but you should back up your words, “I’m gunna knock you out in the first” is fine if you try and KO the guy in the 1st (punch him).

Blow-Job Penn is a hypocrite and joke of a man,

by Adam on Feb 2, 2009 11:46 AM EST up reply actions

couldnt have said it better myself adam ! hes a joke exactly for that reason. he has mad skills and is a good fighter at 155, but dont get on like an idiot running your mouth about to the death and how gsp is a quitter…when u quit after round 4? get back out there and take your beating like a man and stick to your words !

by mark hynes on Feb 2, 2009 12:01 PM EST up reply actions

I like your agrument….makes sense….thanks

by Robert(1) on Feb 2, 2009 12:18 PM EST up reply actions

You’re the “joke of a man” wether or not he backs up what he says, he is willing to fight GSP, are you? Joke.

by ( (AdamG ) ) on Feb 2, 2009 12:44 PM EST up reply actions

tough loss AdamG….no offence but I’m happy I’m not in your shoes….BJ is a LW and the best LW of all time imo and would also beat 95% of WW’s…he is still the LW champ and will put the beat down on Kenny I’m sure of it…just wasn’t his night on Saturday…

by McArthur on Feb 2, 2009 12:50 PM EST up reply actions

tell me about it, went from the fighter with the most possible future options, to the guy in the LTWT division, i hope he retires, i dont see how he can call himself a champ after all that talk and then quiting. All the fun is gone, no more gsp, no more rubber match, no more double belt defenses, no more Alves, no more Hughes 3 (probably), no more legend or best of all time, no more Anderson Silva, no more could a should a would a, its over my friend . . . “I was not impressed by his performance!!!”

by ( (AdamG ) ) on Feb 2, 2009 1:02 PM EST up reply actions

BJ needs more work on his cardio/strength training, the guy has improved his conditioning but its what made the difference in the fight; in the first round GSP could not take Penn down at all, he had 2-3 failed attempts, I’ve never seen someone stay on their feet like that when GSP wants it on the ground.

Overall I was dissapointed in the fight; I was hoping for a back and forth battle, not a one sided beating; I think Penn is still one of the best there is. GSP is just a monster at 170; non stop full steam ahead every minute of every round, not many people in the world can keep up with that kind of pace. That being said, hopefully this loss doesn’t get inside BJ’s head, if so, then I won’t be surprised to see Ken Flo pull out a win.

by O damn he got caught on Feb 2, 2009 1:08 PM EST up reply actions

huh…he’ll be back with a vengence and you know it…I feel bad for Kenny all of a sudden

by McArthur on Feb 2, 2009 1:12 PM EST up reply actions

i will be surprised for Kenny but i also think BJ is still the best WlWT in the world, besides GSP, when GSP moves up to 185 BJ will be reunited with HIS belt, til then, i have not much respectfor BJ “The quiter” Penn.

by ( (AdamG ) ) on Feb 2, 2009 1:12 PM EST up reply actions

Adam G-

Don’t worry. He will be back. Losing to a stud like GSP is no reason to be too upset. Everybody in combat sports takes a whooping at one time or another. This one loss does not take away from the talented fighter that BJ Penn is.

Truth.

by OJR on Feb 2, 2009 1:13 PM EST up reply actions

Ill be glued to my TV the day GSP meets his maker, Ando possibly, but then he will lose cause its a stud like Ando, i want someone to blind side him the way he blind sided me, a random outclassing by Alves would be nice, something as unexpected as GSP mounting BJ Penn by the 3rd round. BullSH*T!!!

by ( (AdamG ) ) on Feb 2, 2009 1:17 PM EST up reply actions

The BJ Penn that i grew up watching would have walked out to the center of the cage and took his FULL beating like a man, faught off the DR tying to stop the fight, somthing, he just crumbled in his corner, . . .speechless . . .RETIRE!

by ( (AdamG ) ) on Feb 2, 2009 1:19 PM EST up reply actions

it was definately surprising

by McArthur on Feb 2, 2009 1:28 PM EST up reply actions

as much as i lost respect for him quitting after running his mouth about gsp being a quitter, i dont think he should retire. he can still compete at 155, he just ran into the king of the 170 division that night. he can still dominate at 155, and i think florian is in trouble when that fight happens. as for adam g sayin im the joke, sorry kid, its bj…if he wanted to fight to the death, get out their for round 5 and lets see it.

by mark hynes on Feb 2, 2009 1:31 PM EST up reply actions

Yep Adam, I have to agree, I couldn’t help but think of the GSP vs Jon Fitch fight, where Fitch took way more dmg than BJ and still kept trying to win; I think Penn was mentally broken. I was not dissapointed in BJ’s performance/effort at all; I was just dissapointed to see that he threw in the towel.

by O damn he got caught on Feb 2, 2009 1:32 PM EST up reply actions

me too…where there’s a will there’s a way…BJ didn’t have the will on Saturday….

by McArthur on Feb 2, 2009 1:34 PM EST up reply actions

didnt you guys also think that penn looked terrified and scared in the octagon during the intros ? to me he looked so scared to be in the ring and that was when i knew he was in for trouble that night !

by mark hynes on Feb 2, 2009 1:34 PM EST up reply actions

Nope. Stop trying to attack his character. He lost to a great champion. End of story.

by OJR on Feb 2, 2009 1:36 PM EST up reply actions

nuff said OJR…end of story for me too… :)

by McArthur on Feb 2, 2009 1:42 PM EST up reply actions

True OJR. AND HLL NOOOOO, BJ was not scared in the ring dude, that i will neveragree to, are you kidding, thats my entire point bro, YOU keep saying hes the joke not you, he was scared before hand not you, he was there and DID fight GSP, you were where, in you recliner fat *ss!!! Dont call me “kid” newbee, im 25 tomorrow, have a son, pay a mortgage, and have been on this site for 3-4 years now cool guy. BJ wasnt scared before hand no way, and the towell came when he knew he was out of his league and just wasting his time in there, everybodys time in there. But scard, dude he lost, he didnt cry. Sorry kid.

by ( (AdamG ) ) on Feb 2, 2009 1:44 PM EST up reply actions

This is the way I see it. It really appears to me that, BJ was scared. (Not to nit-pick, or argue). The look of confidence BJ typically has at the stare-down is downright intimidating. That was not present. He DID look off-kilter, kinda like he was not really all there. I said a few days before the fight that BJ was really using up the small gas tank he has before the fight. I think all the shit he was talking mentally wore him down….mentally. Remember BJ saying that he has to relax and recover during his routine camp, that it is necessary to not (physically) peak before the fight. But to peak at the fight. Hypothetically, I think he was mentally finished before the fight even started.
On the other hand, his peak physical condition might have been there, it was just no match for the monster he faced.

by GodDamnMike on Feb 2, 2009 2:07 PM EST up reply actions

WoW! D.White is pretty serious abou this Vas thing . . .Wonder if it will go anywhere. At bjPenn . com you can see the footage of what happened in full, the corner man went from face to shoulders to chest to upperback, it was noticed by the nsac right away and i guess they are taking it pretty seriously as well as D.White, most likely outcom if any, Kru Phil Nurse will lose his lisense, not much more than that for all you “GSP cheater” hopefuls and “no contest” wanters… Doubtful.

by ( (AdamG ) ) on Feb 2, 2009 2:38 PM EST up reply actions

The nsac even “went up there and started screaming at the cornermen and GSP, knocked the vas down and kicked it out of the octagon!” . . . No good, no?

by ( (AdamG ) ) on Feb 2, 2009 2:43 PM EST up reply actions

And Jackson appologized to Valentino after the fight for the inncidnt . . .WHY do that if it was just a “ritual they do every fight”??? And “every fight” huh, wierd no one noticed it til now, proably cause its a first therfor making it NOT “a ritual” . . .

by ( (AdamG ) ) on Feb 2, 2009 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

the ritual involves the rubbing of the back, shoulders, temple…usually and hopefully not with vas though

by McArthur on Feb 2, 2009 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

Then the “ritual” should be done by someone not doing the vas right? Since th cornermen and the fighters and the officials know a rule is “no vas anywhere but he face” simply put. Nurse goes right for the chest and back and the officials JUMP right on it right then an there, but still do not effectivly wipe it all off, and lets say he was getting “greasesd” before the fight as well by adding water and sweat to it later it reactivates Vas, adding more to an lready applied area activates earlir applied Vas also.

by ( (AdamG ) ) on Feb 2, 2009 3:08 PM EST up reply actions

Im learning of Serra complainin of the same thing with GSP, KenFlo saying the same thing about Huerta after their fight, all from Jacksons camp . . .

by ( (AdamG ) ) on Feb 2, 2009 3:09 PM EST up reply actions

BJ got worked, but something wasnt right that night, im no longer “down in the dumps” im detemined to find out whats up here. Penn seemed done after the 1st his attitude) and maybe thats cause he got to see how slippery GSP was, no to mention GSP pulling down BJ’sshorts or using them during a takdown attempt, then hitting Penn severl times in the back of the head, warned more than 3 times, and in several rounds . . . We’ll see.

by ( (AdamG ) ) on Feb 2, 2009 3:12 PM EST up reply actions

thats what i mean goddamnmike. he just didnt look the same, maybe scared wasnt the right word, but he didnt look right. just didnt have the stare of the usual confident demeanor. as for adam g, calm down man. only having a discussion here. dont act like you know everything and i dont, im no newbie. been following this stuff for a long time now too. just tryin to have discussion with fellow mma’ers.

by mark hynes on Feb 2, 2009 3:13 PM EST up reply actions

GSP is still better, but maybe thats only when he’s using 4 different types of cheating, if he did . . .

by ( (AdamG ) ) on Feb 2, 2009 3:13 PM EST up reply actions

Sorry dude, i love BJ, youll learn this.

by ( (AdamG ) ) on Feb 2, 2009 3:14 PM EST up reply actions

Where are you going with this Adam?…What, do you think the outcome of this fight would have been different? When GSP was picking apart BJ on the feet, Did the Vas help? NO! When GSP had BJ Defending the takedown in the 1st round, it was apart of the master plan that GSP had in store for BJ, NOT THE VAS.

In the first round, BJ Penn was so scared of the strength that GSP possess, he screamed at the ref. I know everyone heard that. The scream was because GSP had a hold of BJ’s Shorts, but in all reality, BJ was scared to shit b/c he could feel the power of GSP. BJ wasn’t screaming cause of the “pull of the shorts” he was scared period of the whole fight!….AND NOT THE VAS….

Give it up for life Adam G…Let his camp run to the nsac, it won’t changed the out-come. 10/10 GSP Wins against BJ “The guy who never gives up” Penn!

by ntvmma on Feb 2, 2009 3:33 PM EST up reply actions

there wasn’t any “picking apart BJ” on the feet; landing a superman jab, and a couple regular jabs could hardly be considered “working someone”; BJ likes to play high guard, if GSP’s upper back was greased like some are suggesting than it gets all over BJ’s legs the second he goes to set up a triangle or play that high guard. After its all over his legs it’s easy for GSP to slip out of the guard and into side mount; didn’t you hear Rogan saying over and over again about how amazing it was that GSP was just passing BJ’s guard like that?? I’m not saying I buy into the “conspiracy” either I’m just saying if it was intentional, it would have been a significant advantage to GSP maintaining that top position and moving so easily into Sidemount/mount.

by O damn he got caught on Feb 2, 2009 3:45 PM EST up reply actions

got it dude, didnt buy into to it yesterday nd dont really buy it today. SORRY pal, but i think i was the first tosay it whn this nws originaly broke yesterday “BJ . . .STOP CRYING!!!” so dont tell me about BJ’s camp this and stan up jabs that bro, i know what it would have done and what it wouldnt have done bro, i get it. BUT fact is its illegal right?? Ok then, dont tell me anything ude, tell GSP to win and NOT do illegal things, BJ did nothing wrong right? Wether its a worthy complant of illegal activity, its stillillegal activity. And what, he can just defend his belt forever like this cause he beats guys so bad it doesnt matter?? YOU my friend are blind! Serra complained of it, BJcomplained of it and it was seen on camera, and Kenflo complained of it when e faught Huerta (also in Jacksons camp) Wierd huh? And also wierd that GSP becomes this “Untak downable, uncontrollable, fast, great BJJ moves and pases guy” right when he gets with Jacksons camp huh??? Outwrestled Kos . . . Outfaught Fitch . . . Then copletely outclassed anothe P4Per . . . Right, im sure it all GSP in there. Add the strike to the back of the head several times in several rounds and being warned by Herb Dean about it several times, grabbing BJ’s shorts duing takedowns, and Vas to not allow BJJ to come into play. . . . If it walks like a duck. . .

by ( (AdamG ) ) on Feb 2, 2009 4:03 PM EST up reply actions

AdamG up above you say there’s full footage of the cornerman greasing GSP inbetween rounds, which video is it, I’m on BJpenn.com and the only thing I see is Dana Whites video blog from fight night when he complains about the vas used on GSP.

by O damn he got caught on Feb 2, 2009 4:05 PM EST up reply actions

LMAO! Right, screamed cause he was scared but never screame again, GSP was still there right, but BJ stopped beig scared or what, why didnt he give up right then, when GSP was demonstrating his “power” and not grabbing BJ’s shorts. You act like all these things arent against the rules dude, THEY ARE! Get some MMA kowledge and then come talk to me. Its not abut the Penn fight, its about feeling bad for Alves cause GSP will do the same thing to him that he has done to Kos, Serra, and BJ, like Huerta tried to do to Kenflo, like Jackson tries o do with all his cast.

by ( (AdamG ) ) on Feb 2, 2009 4:06 PM EST up reply actions

O damn; its in the thread on the left of the main page called “GSP and his team secret cheat footage” it has 3 vids as you scroll down showing everythign that happened the 2nd time they were caught (between rnds 2 and 3 when the commission was already pissed and watching for it), they already had a big blowout the first time, between rnds 1 and 2.

by ( (AdamG ) ) on Feb 2, 2009 4:09 PM EST up reply actions

You both too ignorant too see BJ was completely owned before even coming into that fight… GSP didn’t look scared, not once! The only time BJ didn’t look scared is when he was coming into the octagon. There is absouloutley nothing BJ had on GSP..Nothing!. You’re biased attmpt to dis-credit a fighter in GSP means nothing to me. You’re conspiracy is nothing, and even BJ Penn him self knows he was beat. GSP had the ultimate game plan for Penn, thats it and thats all! Working Penn’s Cardio, keeping him working was the plan, and it played out really well for GSP.
BJ is a god at LW and im a fan, but his fans are a bunch of cry babys, and make me damn near hate the fact BJ is a fighter.
Luckily, i apporach these situations differnetly, Im a fan of BJ Penn, and i completely agree the BJ would probably own maybe 85% of the WW in the UFC, but to continue on with the ignorant discussion about GSP being a grease monkey is just stupid. BJ is the man, he and he stepped up and took the loss like a man. Don’t ruin it for him and for fans like us. BJ has already stated his coming back and gonna take on Kflo..so don’t kill it for the rest of us fans.

“GSP is still better, but maybe thats only when he’s using 4 different types of cheating, if he did . . .” Surprise, surprise Adam is coming up with more excuses, I would have never guessed. You have had excuses for everyone of BJ’s losses, why stop now? Anyone who thinks GSP is the type of guy to cheat, just isn’t paying attention. Adam, why don’t you go look at all the gifs floating around other sites of BJ’s corrner rubbing grease on his face and then touching his BACK and CHEST. Hypocrite.

Nobody should get three tries. Eventually the truly better fighter will get caught.

As we saw with W. Silva.

by Lester the Pimp on Feb 2, 2009 11:31 AM EST up reply actions

Spyder, can you truthfully say that GSP/Penn 1 was as one sided as the Tito/Shamrock beatdowns?

Not a chance! BJ lost a split decision due to takedowns in rounds 2 and 3. IF a fight was judged on damage, like it should be, he would have won thier first fight.

BUT, after seeing JUST the 2nd fight, there would be no need for part 3. It would just be more of rounds 2, 3, and 4.

by ViolentMike on Feb 2, 2009 11:53 AM EST up reply actions

Bj is still the #1 LW, you still have to give the guy credit for fighting a weight class above, I know he has done it before and the first time vs GSP it was very close but the new GSP is way stronger than the old GSP, the vas had nothing to do with outcome but hopefully this will help BJ overcome this loss and get back to defending his LW belt. I love GSP but I think A.Silva would be to much for him his long legs and power are to much to overcome but I still would like to see him try and hopefully prove me wrong.

Thoughts On BJ v. GSP

I am a BJ nuthugger. All I can say is that BJ took a butt whooping. No excuses. The better man won. Congrats to the classy and humble CHAMPION, GSP!

I read some posts back that Alves will take it to GSP.

Hmmm…I don’t think so. I look at the list of people GSP has destroyed and I doubt that Alves can bring anything new besides a steroid bloated physique.

Machida is the man! I have been riding his sack for awhile now. Ask Thiago if Machida is "boring". Hop on the Machida bandwagon, boys…

Diaz needs to act more humble and not showboat in the ring.

Jones is the truth.

by mark hynes on Feb 2, 2009 1:33 PM EST up reply actions

Ya i noticed that too- BUT here’s the thing, they wipped it off as i remember between the rounds. and it wasn’t done on purpose as you can see on another thread it was an accident.. and either way it wouldn’t of made a difference for the outcome of the fight, its not like it was rubbed on the whole back just the centre of his back.

by ricky on Feb 2, 2009 11:16 AM EST up reply actions

give me a break.. GSP is bigger and better, no need to even talk about this! BJ Penn is way too small for WW and would have been murdered by Thiago Alves too, and Fitch, Kos and everybody else.. Diego Sanchez will probably beat him in a 5 round title fight too.. he’s not good enough of an athlete

the ufc needs to put more emphasis on the volume of the live crowds during it’s telecasts. it doesn’t sound nearly as loud on tv and would add alot to the ppv’s imo. it would probably drown out goldie and rogans voices, but that might be a good thing. rogan was annoying sat night. there was 1 point during the 2nd rnd when gsp was landing some great punches, and rogan was going on and on about bj being the 1rst american to win the bjj tournament and i was like “shut the hell up and call the fight”. everyone already knows there backstories of these 2 fighters.

gooooooood day~ my mmanerdz!

just stopped in to let u all know i had a great time this weekend.

imo~ i thought uc94 was pretty dang good. i sat 10th row.

after my first bets of the year on mma~ i made 17k on the night.

my wrong picks were~ stun-gun~ diaz~ and bonnar.
~~\

back on topic~

this excuse talk needs to stop!

gsp owned bj. i dont want to hear that bj had an off night either!

if u have ‘off nights’??

then ur not a 100% fighter. it means u have a flaw!…

that "off night" crap needs to stop~

just like the "jelly belly" talk..

bj needs to go back and dominate the lw division like he knows he can!

that said~

gsp needs to stay at ww!! no sense in going up to get murdered by andy.

great show 94 was except guida beat my homie nate.

adamG~ hows my G doing??

by stinky~fingers on Feb 2, 2009 10:05 AM EST reply actions

Agreed, I think GSP would get killed by Anderson. I think the worst move a fighter can make is to gain weight to fight a heavier fighter. As soon as you beef up you are not what you were. If Anderson wants to move down so be it but GSP should never move up!!!!!

by Spyder on Feb 2, 2009 10:16 AM EST up reply actions

I read somewhere that Silva vs GSP will be at catchweight. So GSP will be fine. Halfway between 170 and 185 is 177.5, and GSP was apparantly fighting at 180 against BJ, so weight will not be an issue against Silva.

by Hero-Of-Time on Feb 2, 2009 10:26 AM EST up reply actions

its not all about the size when it comes to the murder that would happen.

andy is on another level then gsp~

just like gsp is on another levle then bj.

andy could cut all the way down to 170 and he would still smack gsp.

andy should be fighting 205ers and not mw or ww.

he only has 4 fights left after 87..

by stinky~fingers on Feb 2, 2009 10:36 AM EST up reply actions

GSP vs Silva wont happen for a while, if ever… they both have tough fights coming up, especailly GSP, dont overlook Alves, he is a beast!!!!

by ---Caesar--- on Feb 2, 2009 11:25 AM EST up reply actions

Heard it all before guys.. Serra is GSP’s kryptonite, Fitch is too scrappy for him, BJ is superior at everything.. No matter who he beats, you always have an ace in your sleeve. Just give the guy his props and quit speculating on the result of a fight that is months if not years away..

by Caper on Feb 2, 2009 2:23 PM EST up reply actions

Good call Caper. GSP will never get the respect and noteriety for doing what no one else can even come close to doing. Could you imagine if Fitch, or Penn had won?? Being from another country (and speaking another language) will never get the same light from the vast majority of the fans. Patriotism is a real thing nowadays…..hehe.

by GodDamnMike on Feb 2, 2009 2:41 PM EST up reply actions

I think GSP is awesome, and continue to prove he is one of the best fighters in the world. I don’t know if it would ever happen, but Anderson Silva vs. GSP would be great to see. IMHO Silva would beat GSP easily, and I am a big GSP fan. Silva is at a different level than every other fighter out there. I’ve been saying this for over a year, enjoy watching Silva while you can, because a fighter like him comes along once in a generation. He is as good at what he does as was Ali in boxing, Jordan in Basketball and Tiger in golf. That doesn’t take away from other great players or athletes, there are just people who are just on a different level. GSP is always improving and is a great fighter, but Silva just has so much God given talent, that no amount of hard work and training can make up for that. I love both guys and they will continue to dominate at their respective weight classes!

i read that gsp came into his fight against penn at 187 pounds and and that thiago alves came into his fight against kos at 199 and i dont think anderson even comes into his fights on the night of the fight at 199 so if gsp can handle alves i think he has a great shot at beating anderson i think that gsp has a better chance to beat anderson than any of the middleweights currently in the ufc.

by matt on Feb 2, 2009 11:41 AM EST up reply actions

I would say that Dan Henderson has a better chance than GSP. Partly because Dan showed the a take-down into good position should work, a good wrestler with a solid chin.

Dan beats Silva maybe 1 in 4 or 5 attempts, he’s just gotta hope that after Bisping he gets that “good” attempt.

MATT, if GSP can beat Thiago at 199 that automatically means he can handle Anderson Silva at 199 lbs? Are you serious?? That has to be THE WORST MMAmath I have ever seen!

Also, 199 seems VERY heavy for Thiago, yes, even for Thiago. If he ever weighted 199 on fight night, I would think that it was for the Hughes fight where he wasnt even able to make wieght. If you read that he was 199 for the Kos fight “somewhere on the internet”, please remember that you can always believe what you read on the internet… I don’t recall ever hearing of a WW add back 29 lbs in 24 hours. I mean, I don’t even think HW’s that cut to 265 can even weigh 294 on fight night. That is just toooo much, unless they planned on dying of bloat..

by ViolentMike on Feb 2, 2009 11:59 AM EST up reply actions

maybe he walks at 199…but NOBODY can add 29lbs in a day…

by McArthur on Feb 2, 2009 12:06 PM EST up reply actions

Í don’t think GSP would beat Franklin, Hendo or even Bisping and he would atleast have a very hard time doing so GSP beating Anderson Silva won’t happen.. the reach and the skill of Anderson is just too much for him to handle

by RoB on Feb 2, 2009 12:24 PM EST up reply actions

he wouldn’t beat Marquardt either that guy is huuge

here it is from yahoo

“In Alves’ recent win over Josh Koscheck on Oct. 25 in Chicago, he went into the cage at an unheard-of 199 pounds after making 171, which would make St. Pierre the rare smaller welterweight if Alves could do it again.”

Here are my final thoughts on UFC 94. I posted something similar yesterday, but I edited and added a bunch more just now at work.

I don’t know about everyone else, but last night I came away most impressed with Lyoto Machida – just like the last few times he has fought. After last nights performance, I don’t know how anyone can not appreciate his style. Everyone was so dead set on ‘Thiago being this vicious striker that was going to KILL the "BORING" Machida’. Sorry guys, but Machida proved that he is head and shoulders against everyone he has faced in his career thus far, and much more than likely, above everyone in the LHW division. He fought an undefeated Thiago Silva and didn’t even get punched once! Machida dropped him three times and left him for dead in the center of the octagon at the buzzer of Round 1. Now you want to talk about an impressive performance!!! WOW!!! I am happy that I was having a bad run and Boner messed up my parlay because I ran to the computer and got Machida at -200 as he was entering the octagon.

I don’t like that they are forcing Rampage to have two fights before his rematch – his fight with Jardine is a waste of a Main Event, but Rampage better be careful because Keith loves to play the roll of the spoiler. But this is not Main Event worthy fight in my eyes. Machida didn’t even get touched in his fight and he is in shape and ready to go. Rashad is going to be sitting pretty with the belt for a while now because he isn’t going to have to defend his belt until the fall at the earliest. That is just stupid. Instead of having this stupid situation where Rampage gets the next title shot if he beats Jardine, but if Jardine wins, then Machida gets the next title shot, simply scrap Jardine and plug Machida in to face Rampage for the #1 contender spot. Now THAT would be a PPV Main Event UFC needs to STOP putting divisions on hold for NO reason.
BJ on the other hand, he just didn’t show up mentally. Even in the stare down, he didn’t look right. GSP was the one doing the "BJ rock". GSP was once one of the most exciting fighters in MMA and sooo many people (not I) were thrilled to see him dethrone the greatest WW of all time, Matt Hughes – because they saw him as a "boring wrestler". And look how GSP has fought all of his fights as of late. Pretty ironic, HUH?? Everyone knows that I’ll be rooting for Thiago Alves to knock GSP’s head off, but I will not be willing to wager money on Thiago… Like Adam G said, GSP is the best 198 lb fighter that fights at 170. At least against Thiago, he will FINALLY get to fight someone his own size.

And what was up with "Huggie Bear" Guida??? That was awful. He looked like a gay man hugging a straight man throughout the entire fight. I don’t know what was more girly. Huggie Bear’s fight strategy or Gono’s entrance. Talk about not wanting to fight! If anyone was going to implement that strategy, I thought it would have been John Palakowski (spelling?). After the fight, I predicted to my brother that he would win by split decision, and he thought I was crazy. But I knew that one judge would discredit Clay for showing zero aggression. I found that even more boring than lay n pray. Well that, and I consider the UFC judges to be either semi-retarded or semi-blind or they all have beginning stages of Alzheimer’s.

Also, I am surprised that Chris Wilson lost to an unknown. Did anyone watch this fight? Did the judges get the split decision wrong?

by ViolentMike on Feb 2, 2009 10:33 AM EST up reply actions

VM.“at least against Thiago he will FINALLY get to fight someone his own size”.??? was not jon fitch considered one of the biggest, strongest ww’s in mma when gsp fought him? yes he was. fitch is said to walk around at around 205-210. gsp just made fitch look weaker, as he will alves. you think gsp has become a “boring wrestler” like hughes. lol! keep hating, it only makes gsp stronger.

by b.w. on Feb 2, 2009 1:30 PM EST up reply actions

Wowww your a hater.. I wouldn’t even call you a BJ fan, just a GSP hater. Man he outclassed BJ everywhere. Standing, Sub Defence, and Wrestling. It’s part of the sport bro, deal with it.

by Caper on Feb 2, 2009 2:29 PM EST up reply actions

Correct. I HATE GSP. Always have, always will. Did I diss GSP or discredit his win in any way? Nope.

Oh, and by the way Caper, WHO ARE YOU???

B-Dub, Fitch is a larger WW, but he doesn’t have to resort to banned diuretics to make wieght!

by ViolentMike on Feb 3, 2009 10:56 AM EST up reply actions

Stinky, everyone has off nights… just like GSP did vs Serra, Chuck vs Jardine, etc… it happens, that is what makes this sport so great! GSP was clearly the better man in this fight, but BJ will be back dominating the LW division for a long time! The vasoline wouldnt have determined the outcome, but we will see if he gets fined or something…

great parts of the video blog~

-lorenzos reacion to the machida ko over silva.

-how mad dana sounds about the ‘jelly belly’

-how happy~ and then how sad rashad and the crow looked when dana said gsps in trouble.

-gretzky’s wife and how u know gsp fully hit that after the fight.(in the butt too)

-dana’s and wands $100 bet.

all around this blog was pretty good~

Yeah I know size isn’t the issue, that’s what I was talking about.
Even still, I don’t think it will be as one-sided as everyone thinks. If there’s anyone who has the skill to take Silva down and hold him down, it’s GSP. The guy throws 205’ers around in training. His strength and his wrestling are insane.
And on the feet… well the Thiago fight will be a sort of sneak-preview of what his gameplan against Silva would be, ’cause Thiago is better on the feet than GSP.
GSP definately has the tools to beat Silva.

by Hero-Of-Time on Feb 2, 2009 10:39 AM EST reply actions

if he can take rashad down with ease he can take anderson down, if he can pass bj’s guard like that he can pass anderson’s. Also is it just me or is rashad tiny for a light heavyweight, gsp in the primtime show looked as big as him and just in this blog when rashad was standing next to " the crow" it looked the david lousiea was alot bigger than rashad

I loved this blog, saw another side to dana, i thought it was excellent the way he reassured bonnar!! I like that shit!!

I am no bj fan but if gsp had vaseline rubbed on his back then it is illegal and against the rules, therefore cheating!! I agree the fight would have played out the same, however rules are rules. I for one would love to see a rematch as bj wasnt himself and maybe he would come in shape the next time!!

gsp was immense however and clearly done his homework. Also how many big fighters were there….quality!!

Im at the next one ufc95…..not even on a par main event wise lol!!!!!!

by mo on Feb 2, 2009 11:36 AM EST reply actions

95 may not have a main event that’s on par with GSP/Penn, but you can be rest assured it will be more exciting.

94 turned out to be a big dissapointment. If someone were to tell me that Machida was going to be the most exciting fighter on the card, I would have probably threw up in my mouth a little bit.

My take on 94…

-I’m happy to see Karo make it through 3 rounds after his panic disorder problems. Although I think he should have lost the decision, he got over a huge hump.

-I chose Bonnar to win TUF 1, and I think he beat Griffin…but, he is just not top calibre and should be fighting in the prelims.

-Jones was fun to watch and has a bright future ahead of him. I look forward to seeing him fight again.

-Guida is an attention whore and needs to stop acting like such an ass-clown. It’s one thing to be full of piss and vinegar, but this guy acts like a complete idiot. I would appreciate it if people would stop saying things like “everyone likes his personality” when describing him, because I hate his personality. Then, to top it off, he hugs Diaz for 10 minutes and wins a decision? Meh…enough with this guy. I’ll take Nate losing a fight and actually trying to fight, over this attention whore winning by hugging his opponent…any day of the week.

-Penn looked heavy at the weigh-ins, and as much as I hate to say it “I told you so”…he gassed in round 2.

-GSP is on a completely different level than anyone at 170. As much as I like Alves…he ain’t beating GSP. I’m not falling for the UFC “hype” for Alves/GSP…GSP will walk through him. For those who will fall for the hype, ask yourselves this question…who would win, Penn / Alves?….I’d say BJ…’nuff said.

UFC 94 out of a scale of 1-10……6 (only because of Lyoto Machida)…damn, just threw up a little.

Thank God Affliction posted a 9.5 last week, or I’d be out $100.00 for nothing.

by introvert on Feb 2, 2009 12:17 PM EST up reply actions

LOL @ Machida comment. GSP, Jones and Machida were the top performances of the night!

by OJR on Feb 2, 2009 1:04 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, they were…still not saying much though. The card, as a whole, turned out to be pretty weak, IMO.

by introvert on Feb 2, 2009 1:27 PM EST up reply actions

Karo was a bore and Diaz should have kept his stand up going.

by OJR on Feb 2, 2009 2:03 PM EST up reply actions

I’d give Affliction 2 a 9/10 and UFC 94 a 6/10 at best…

by McArthur on Feb 2, 2009 1:45 PM EST up reply actions

actually I think Alves would OWN Penn as well. You Penn nuthuggers don’t realize that Penn just can’t deal with the size of these guys. Not to say that GSP’s ability and gameplan had nothing to do with the win, on the contrary it was his ability that made it such a dominating win. But his size is what gave Penn so much trouble and Alves would be the same way. I don’t think he’d dominate Penn like GSP did, the fight would certainly be more of a battle on the feet, back and forth, etc. but I think Alves with his devastating leg kicks and overall power would beat Penn.

by Anthony on Feb 2, 2009 2:39 PM EST up reply actions

Who’s a Penn nutthugger?

I’m a fan, but picked him to gas and lose to GSP…that’s what happened.

by introvert on Feb 2, 2009 4:30 PM EST up reply actions

BJ would lose to all of the top WW’s like Kos, Fitch, AJ, Alves.. and i can promise you that he’s going to lose against Diego in a title fight at 155..

by RoB on Feb 3, 2009 5:05 AM EST up reply actions

pffft…..bj’s a joke?? thats why he would submit or KO any1 of you people in 10 seconds……..because he destroys people at 155 and hes the champ is that why hes a joke

One thought I had –
Now I know that Dana is on the up and up when it comes to the organization, but I don’t think a video clip of him making a bet on one of the fights is a good idea. I realize it was just a friendly bet, and for a minor amount of money, but this is the kind of thing that can easily be blown out of proportion by reporters and ruling commissions. Maybe I’m just being paranoid.

by jr on Feb 2, 2009 12:08 PM EST reply actions

great show all in all
now UFC is setting everything up for UFC 100, don’t forget:
Main card:
1) GSP vs Thiago
2) BJ vs Florian
3) Rampage vs Rashad
4) Hendo vs Bisping
5) Gotta have Chuck in there, just depends on the outcome of his fight vs Rua
It’s going to be sick!!

I agree that they need to scrap Jardine and put Machida in his place. But since that won’t happen give Machida the next shot and if Rampage can get past Jardine then let him fight Machida after he takes the belt from Rashad.

Extreme damage and SLAYER

Once again much love to mmamania
I lookup this site every freaking day!
I’m an average MMA fan I buy UFC ppv 3-4 times a year, so I’m pissed off

Here`s my point
By releasing the video blog, Dana just cause extreme damage to St-Pierre career and to the UFC
first of, it shows Chuck Liddle insinuating ST-PIERE was cheating. hard to know what MIR thinks?
U got the former biggest UFC star accusing the current biggest UFC start of cheating!!!
now Chuck’s next fight is in Montreal UFC 97!!!
I don’t dislike him, Chuck is a big Slayer so he’s almost family to me.
But there is no way in hell Chuck is going to fight in Montreal with this video spreading all over the net.
This fight will be scrap.

Dana how can you be so irresponsible

by McArthur on Feb 2, 2009 1:24 PM EST up reply actions

Perhaps if he did not show it people would think he was protecting GSP??? Perhaps he shared the video for his own protection and the protection of the UFC. His reaction was that of zero tolerance and also of one that appeared to be independent of any ruling. A preemptive strike if you will. Cant blame Dana for Chuck “the snowman” Lidell. The point about GSP is valid but I think he will survive if he maintains his integrity.

Totally disagree, there are other cards already struggling with so many title fights and stars on the 1 card. 2 title fights is plenty, with 2 or 3 other big fights and a nice solid undercard. The usa have had there fair share of huge cards recently, so its time to spread the talent beyond vegas!!!!

LIKE IT OR NOT THE UFC IS BIG AND NOT JUST IN THE US NOW, BUT EVERYWHERE!! I really hope dana doesnt over do ufc100, cos it has a knock on effect!
