Hey- GSP addressed the Vaseline issue at 5:25 remaining in the video. Any thoughts?

Frank Mir looked like he’s getting kind of fat in his face. Anyone else notice that?

BJ BJ BG BG GSP GSP..!! LOL he made BJ quite?! BJ is a quitter? talk about eating your own words GSP made BJ live by his own words. BJ is a quitter LOL. BJ is a quitter LOL. BJ is a …..

by Beaver on Feb 1, 2009 4:31 AM EST reply actions

Not really, BJ said he wanted to fight on, but his brother pulled the plug.

by MoonUK on Feb 1, 2009 7:07 AM EST up reply actions

If BJ wanted to continue he would of made it much clearer than a weak, barely audible “yes”. He would of slapped his hands against his head, squared up and roared or something.

Basically his “yes” was only pride, his body and heart had already quit. Personally I would rather a GSP type quit where he gives up when he knows he’s beat rather than someone who is just trying to survive, because thats how peope get seriously injured.

I’m really happy they stopped it. All those who say MMA is brutal get to see its not about blood lust, the fighters health is the utmost priority.

Another win for MMA

by Holdin_Ropes on Feb 1, 2009 7:14 AM EST up reply actions

Oh come on. BJ didn’t protest at all when JD said stop. If Penn would have come out in the 5th he would have been killed.

by SilasM on Feb 1, 2009 9:12 AM EST up reply actions

espn needs to get their facts straight it had both of them listed as 6’1 when it showed the results in the very beginning

by sac165 on Feb 1, 2009 11:51 AM EST up reply actions

I SAID IT WAS A MISMATCH AND PEOPLE FLAMED ME.
I SAID GSP’S WRESTLING WOULD OVERWHELM BJ AND PEOPLE ARGUED.
I SAID BJ WOULDN’T WIN A ROUND.
I EVEN EXPLAINED HOW THE LHW’S AT HERE AT JACKSON’S GYM HAVE TROUBLE WITH GSP’S WRESTLING AND I WAS DISMISSED.

WELL HERE’S THE “I TOLD YOU SO”

I SAID MACHIDA WOULD DOMINATE SILVA.
“I TOLD YOU SO”

JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER FIGHT I’VE CALLED SINCE THE BEGINNING OF 2008.
“I TOLD YOU SO”

I’VE ARGUED THAT GSP IS THE BEST P4P IN THE WORLD AND THE BJ NUTHUGGERS WENT CRAZY. “I TOLD YOU SO”

Now I’ll make a predictoin: I think GSP stands a 50-50 shot of beating Anderson Silva.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Feb 1, 2009 11:58 AM EST up reply actions

I love GSP, but Silva is to big and elusive for GSP to dominate. I could see GSP shooting for a take downs and eating to many knees, Silva needs to fight Bisping(the future champ) or Henderson first, then maybe a farwell fight with GSP. Pudgy prodigy can stay at 155 and stfu

by Bigmcmac on Feb 1, 2009 12:36 PM EST up reply actions

bisping the future champ? ok… hopefully henderson stops him so we don’t have to see silva whoop his ass. I don’t think gsp can beat silva though, his standup is too good and he would probably have a good reach on gsp

by Bk on Feb 1, 2009 1:47 PM EST up reply actions

“Now I’ll make a predictoin: I think GSP stands a 50-50 shot of beating Anderson Silva.”

-Thats not a prediction.

And I’m not a BJ Penn nuthugger I definately thought GSP
was taking this oen relatively eaasily, so why are you
acting like you are the know it all. Your post makes it
sound like you were the only one who thought GSP would win.
You need to calm down pal, GSP was the odss maker favorite
and the people’s choice to win dude you aren’t the mma lord
of all creation

by trblkd on Feb 1, 2009 1:25 PM EST up reply actions

Yes I am the lord of mma prediction (at least pointing out mismatches when other people’s hearts blind them). The odds makers didn’t say it was mismatch. They didn’t say BJ wouldn’t win a round. I said that. If you thought GSP would dominate then I wasn’t talking to you dipshit.

Okay so 50-50 chance isn’t really a prediction for the A. Silva thing. I’ll concede that, but what I’m trying to say is that he has a legit chance of holding him down. There will be plenty of people here who refute that.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Feb 1, 2009 4:38 PM EST up reply actions

50-50 shot. thats some predicition!

by holder on Feb 2, 2009 12:05 PM EST up reply actions

Oh, and Karo sucked! I didn’t predict a loss for him, but I did mention that he annoys me and he’s not contender material anymore.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Feb 1, 2009 12:07 PM EST up reply actions

love the awkward crowd response when machida said “Am i desrving of a crowd shot?”

by ADA on Feb 1, 2009 5:01 AM EST reply actions

Yeah, he said “People, am I deserve the title shot?” and it was a soft cheer but I think it’s because most people didn’t understand what he said.

by RedDog on Feb 1, 2009 7:52 AM EST up reply actions

yea sure, but ppl wants to see the big names fight for the titles so the crowd response was as expected.. and btw, Thiago must have had a mental breakdown through his whole training camp cause he was in horrible physical shape not even close to how he looked like against Houston..

by RoB on Feb 1, 2009 9:39 AM EST up reply actions

I don’t know about a mental breakdown but he definitely had a spare tire going.

by RedDog on Feb 2, 2009 1:44 AM EST up reply actions

Man. GSP is all class. Great insight, great game plan, and through it all he still shows humility and respect. No childish trash talking needed.

Great show BTW always look forward to it.

by Teep on Feb 1, 2009 5:12 AM EST reply actions

Yeah, he let his fighting do the talking. Ironically, I think if Penn would have stayed in one more round, GSP would have have been the one to kill BJ.

by RedDog on Feb 1, 2009 7:55 AM EST up reply actions

To the death indeed. When thinking about how Penn tried to paint GSP as a quitter and hearing GSP psychoanalysis of it- BJ really did describe what he would happen to him to a T.

by DSmith on Feb 1, 2009 11:23 AM EST up reply actions

Jon Jones seems very humble and mature for his age. Just by improving his cardio alone would make him a serious threat to many of the light heavy weight strikers. If he also adds any bjj to his arsenal, even the simple stuff (RNC, armbar, guillotine, etc…) and does it well, he would be a force to be reckoned with at such an early period in hi development.

by Holdin_Ropes on Feb 1, 2009 7:07 AM EST reply actions

I would like to see Jon Jones vs. Matt Hammil next!

by john on Feb 1, 2009 7:14 AM EST up reply actions

Jon JOnes vs. Verra would be interesting as well, since they both have solid greco Roman bases!

by john on Feb 1, 2009 8:42 AM EST up reply actions

I’d see Jones winning both, though I think Hamill be a more competitive fight.

by DSmith on Feb 1, 2009 11:25 AM EST up reply actions

Ever since i saw his fight with Gusmao, i was just blown away by his creativity, timing and daring. Man, i am all over the jones bandwagon. Learning moves off of youtube- What??! I think we’re reaching an era of MMA where many truly naturally gifted and brilliant fighters will rise unlike your one or two like BJ from the previous gen.

I don’t lose any respect for BJ last night, he did get dominated but he isn’t meant to fight up at 170. It’s hard to move up, I’m sure we will see that if Georges makes the jump to Silva.

by Bennie Blanco from the Bronx on Feb 1, 2009 8:59 AM EST up reply actions

Karma is a b——. He thinks he is the greatest thing next to GOD. BJ is naturally gifted but he is also lazy and thinks he don’t have to train and prepare for fights.

by Vette on Feb 1, 2009 9:19 AM EST up reply actions

All this talk from a guy that didnt even have the b*lls to make a prediction before hand, BJ threw in the towell last night but you were never in this fight, shhhhhh.

by ( (AdamG ) ) on Feb 1, 2009 11:46 AM EST up reply actions

Vette, just because he lost like that doesn’t mean he didn’t train. Physically, he looked better than ever at 170. In the second Hughes fight, he weighed in at 162, and had a belly. Friday he weighed in at 168 and there was no flab.

by ( (AdamG ) ) on Feb 1, 2009 11:45 AM EST up reply actions

I had picked BJ.

My favorite fighters are:
1. BJ
2. GSP
3. Rampage
4. Machida

So even though I picked BJ it was hard to do. Props to Georges, he was the stronger guy and his game plan worked. Georges is classy guy and respecful, so when BJ goes down you have to be happy it was Georges.

What is this I hear about BJ filing with the athletic commission about GSP’s back? Things like that shouldn’t even be debatable. There needs to be rules in place so guys can’t even file with the commission. GSP didn’t do anything I’m sure but I think there should be some rules in place.

by Bennie Blanco from the Bronx on Feb 1, 2009 8:58 AM EST reply actions

jon jones – illegal elbow??? i heard frank on this, but I say illegal and need for time for recovery. in any case, jon is very mature for 21 years and a great talent.

by TapedUpPair on Feb 1, 2009 9:21 AM EST reply actions

By the truest definition, the blow was illegal. But, there was no way Jones could gauge whether the elbow would even land let alone decide where to land it.

by DJ on Feb 1, 2009 10:28 AM EST up reply actions

I knew it was physically impossible for BJ to win and i called it a 4th rd TKO.. and Joe Rogan – Mike Goldberg was totally off-beat the whole night they must have had their eyes closed or something.. Jones elbow was right in the back of the head almost the neck and it was brutal!

by RoB on Feb 1, 2009 9:50 AM EST reply actions

I actually picked up how slippery George’s back was when BJ tried to clinch him (utilizing his legs) but was unable. This commotion about the commissioner picking up on his corner applying it to his back proves my perception was correct. I am not saying George did this on purpose but I have another assumption which is that George is on steroids.

Time will tell

by RayS on Feb 1, 2009 10:23 AM EST reply actions

BJ should have had a tune-up fight at 170. It would have given him a chance to adjust to the extra weight. But, from a promotional standpoint, it would have taken away from the mystique if he had of looked merely mortal against one of the average 170 pounders.

I still have alot of respect for BJ’s ability – it is now settled on where he belongs.

by DJ on Feb 1, 2009 10:26 AM EST reply actions

If he really is the guy he acts like, he’ll retire and go into Hawaiian politics. Thats my first bet. If he cant be the best at something he wont do it, he’ll even quit as we’ve seen, like a little b*tch, right BJ? If he still wants to fight at LTWT thats chill, but ill respect him again when GSP leaves the WLWT division and steps back up and gets his belt back, somehow someday. If he ever quits like that agin, especially to a 155er, im done with his *ss, waste my friggin time!!! . . . BJ BJ BJ!!!

So did I hear that Thiago Alves might have to face John Fitch? I think Alves deserves a title shot put fitch against karo or marcus davis or someone like that.

Manchida still doesn’t get a title shot unless Jardine beats Rampage. Well rampage does deserve a shot if he wins so that is fair but why not have the two of them fight in march instead of rampage vs jardine?

And if rampage does win then who will manchida get next? the winner of rashad/rampage? That would take 9 months or more from now.

by DSmith on Feb 1, 2009 12:30 PM EST up reply actions

just heard about it, BJ would have lost, in better shape he would have lost, both dry as a bone or wet as my girlfriend BJ would have lost, steriods or not, BJ would lose, im sorry man. BJ is the best LTWT in the world, thats it. If GSP moves up to 170, after BJ gets his sh*t back, and wins at 155 for 2-3 years, he could try and get back the 170 title, but i repeat, he will never beat GSP, Too big, Too fast, Too big at 170, GSP is the best 185 lb fighter that fights at 170 ive ever seen. BJ BJ BJ!!!

by ( (AdamG ) ) on Feb 1, 2009 12:39 PM EST up reply actions

I know since he has rededicated himself he wants to avenge all of his losses. It’ll be a very hard pill for him to swallow that he can’t beat GSP. I don’t think the 170 belt will mean as much to him without beating GSP along with it, but I agree with you.

by DSmith on Feb 1, 2009 12:48 PM EST up reply actions

I’m not usre what to make of the vaseline thing. I hate to say it, but like Dana said, BJ is surrounded by “yes-men”. They may have said something to him about it. I don’t know what to make of it yet…I’m sure Mania will shed more light on it as soon as he can.

by --utaptout-- on Feb 1, 2009 12:59 PM EST up reply actions

If BJ loses to Ken Flo, which is a very strong possibility as Kenny also comes into fights with a plan, then he will disappear once again.

I really like BJ, but after his trash talking with no back up, how can you be a fan of this guy.

The only truth that can be said about the entire fiasco leading up to the fight is what someone stated about BJ – he can really promote a fight or make something out of nothing. Well, he made lots of money for Dana and lost a lot of respect in the process. GSP might as well been fighting against a cadaver last night as that was how much a threat BJ was to GSP.

I hope they never feature Karo or his zygote Manvel ever again on a UFC card. That fight was friggen hard to watch – even worse was the commentary from Karo’s corner encouraging him. They might as well have given him his fav blue blankie and a soother since this guy has mentally lost it. There is no way he won that fight….NO WAY!!!

by deadgrassinyard on Feb 1, 2009 12:31 PM EST up reply actions

Bj will go back to the kiddy pool and dominate. Gina Carono is 145…so think about that 155 is really small. BJ is the best of the little dudes. All he can do now to save his legacy is be the best light weight champ ever. If he beat Kenny and then diego snachez or whoever. 2 or 3 wins at lightweight and BJ will go down as the best 155 ever.

If GSP beats Thiago and then moves up to face Anderson and wins that he will surpass even Fedor as the best p4p in the world. That is until rickson gracie comes back.

There seems to be some issue with GSP’s corner rubbing vasoline on him. MMA live brought it up, but BJs crew is going to have the commision take a closer look to see if they cheated.

by fokman on Feb 1, 2009 1:00 PM EST reply actions

Its retarded, what does BJ want to fight GSP again without the Vas (if its true) and get his *ss kicked again, what did the Vas do to help GSP land superman punches and jabs? GSP is better regardless of that crap being said. GSP is the best 198 pound fighter that fights at 170 pounds that i have ever seen. GSP is better than BJ Penn. Penn is good, but not great. Period. Gord was right.

by ( (AdamG ) ) on Feb 1, 2009 1:31 PM EST up reply actions

As if that would have some bearing on this fight. Its not like Penn was doing anything. If they call the fight a no contest, it just goes to show how far Dana’s balls are down BJ’s throat.

by deadgrassinyard on Feb 1, 2009 1:36 PM EST up reply actions

The dude vas’ed his face between rounds 1-2, then accidentally used the same hand to massage his back (up top by his neck). You can see when you re-watch the fight. The commission caught it before the round started and wiped it off themselves- there was no cheating.

BJ “The Pudgy” Penn can now go eat coconuts in hawaii and go back up to his weight of 210. He is a pig with a big mouth. He is a loser. He should retire and be a hula dancer. If not a hula dancer then he can wax surfboards at the beach for a few bucka an hour.

by Vince McMahon on Feb 1, 2009 2:00 PM EST reply actions

BJ’s pudgy coconut head bouncing off the mat was the funniest part of the evening. Oh, and I guess "to the death" really means "to the end of the fourth" or "to the point that I get tired or my face hurts".

"Don’t piss me off Georges, I’m serious…". Yeah. Seriously disappointing. After all that smack talk, BJ should have answered the final bell and took his beating like a man. He’s the one who wanted this fight so bad. Cabbage patch coward.

It’s time to stick a fork in BJ’s deformed potatoe head and get on with the Superbowl.

I feel for ((adamg)) theanomoly, utapout true penn fans, I myself would have being really depressed if gsp lost. To be honest I too like you guys thought very highly of penns skills and was shocked at how the fight went. What the hell was wrong with penn is gsp that good or did penn have a really bad night. How the hell did he pass his guard as easily as he did?

Penn really should have stayed at light weight, not said all that shit about gsp, what a nightmare for him now, his fans his family and girlfriend I feel sorry for them. I used to have animosity for penn as he said such disrespectfull things to gsp, but its all gone, I feel sorry for him, how completely embarrassing to lose like that, after all the talk and calling gsp out fore ever.

Was it just me or did penn look really off coming into the fight, like a deer in the head lights, he looked scared like something was wrong. Was he sick or injured coming into this fight? I wonder, nothing like what I expected, I thought it would be a war, and still think penn had a chance to win, it just takes one hard punch and its lights out. But I will say gsp seemed to have an amazing game plan and stayed away from the pocket, he clinched or superman punched, or kicked. What else is there to say, its still surreal to me, of course I’m glad gsp won but holy shit that was not expected.

by nathan on Feb 1, 2009 6:47 PM EST reply actions

I concur that BJ looked like a deer in the headlights, not ready to fight. Like “damn, what have I gotten myself into, I’m not ready for this and GSP obviously is.”

Karmic retribution perhaps for all the trash talking. BJ had to throw all the insults at a guy who is a noble champion and a great ambassador to the sport. Then he doesn’t even come to fight! And can’t even finish!! Totally surreal and some kind of weird lesson in it for me as well as BJ’s whole camp.

I was hoping that if BJ won he would have apologized to GSP. But I can see that wouldn’t cut it, being a good guy after the fact. The right guy won that fight and the other guy was not ready for the biggest moment of his life. Lessons abound in what we witnessed.

You gotta work hard to be a great champ. You’ve gotta be humble and do the painstaking day to day work without EGO. You gotta do everything right so when that moment comes you can lay it all on the line and win or lose with dignity.

GSP is smart enough to train with the best in the world and not make it all about him. Then he helps them out when they need to prepare. Unbelievable camp he has. Meanwhile, Penn is training with guys nowhere near his level. He should suck it up and go to Couture’s camp and be a gym rat for the next few years like GSP. Don’t know if he has that in him, though.

BJ tried to talk himself into the fight by belittling GSP. Ali talked a lot about how he was The Greatest, obviously psyching himself up for big moments, but he always brought it come fight time. That said, Ali’s worst moment and his worst loss came when he tried to humiliate Frazier and got his ass beat in their first fight.

Nate, I’ve been eating crow all over various other posts, but I noticed you’ve been a great sport regarding the outcome of the fight. Good show, man.

I’d like to see BJ make a comeback but he has to totally re-evaluate who he is and what kind of person he’s gonna be. Then he might become a real champion.

’Till then I will look to the class acts of the sport for examples: Fedor, Anderson Silva, Machida, and definitely GSP.
