Jelly Belly: Georges St. Pierre overdoses on Vaseline at UFC 94

GSP

Between the second and third rounds of his fight against BJ Penn at UFC 94: "St. Pierre vs. Penn 2," Georges St. Pierre had an excessive amount of Vaseline applied to his back by his cornermen.

Officials ringside noticed the extra -- and illegal -- application of petroleum jelly on the backside of the Canadian and sprung into action, having it removed before he could come out for the round. St. Pierre had no excuses for the incident, saying it was just a minor mistake caused by the between-round frenzy.

BJ Penn and his team, however, do not see it the same.

"The Prodigy" indicated that he is set to file a complaint with the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC). When contacted for comment, the government entity that regulates the sport in "Sin City" did not have an immediate statement on the incident.

St. Pierre throttled Penn for four full rounds to retain his 170-pound title. He relied on his strong wrestling skills to take the lightweight champion to the mat and pound on him for most of the fight. St. Pierre also demonstrated crisp stand up, landing some nice shots and even a few head-snapping Superman jabs.

The Hawaiian had no answers ... literally. Penn did not answer the bell for the fifth and final round.

The fight was a lopsided drubbing. And it's hard to imagine that Vaseline was the reason behind it. Nonetheless, if the application of the slippery substance was premeditated to give St. Pierre an advantage -- and not a minor mistake as St. Pierre claims -- then there could be repercussions.

Rest assured that the NSAC, if a complaint was indeed filed, will do its best to get to the bottom of the situation. Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for more on this developing story.

Only a classless punk like Penn would try to make an issue out of this after being handed such a beating. BJ, you are not a man! You are nothing more than a bully that got served.

just in case you missed it guys:

UFC 94 Recap and thought by Kevin*****
I see all these BJ fans making excuses and saying ludicrous things, so I’ll be the one to keep it real. GSP dominated the 2nd-4th rounds! GSP was bigger, stronger and more focused! He will dominate the WW division for a long time to come, I really see no one beating him, and am really looking forward to the 3rd "super fight of my time (this one and Hughes/Gracie were the other 2). I think this will be the fight of the century (silva/GSP), as long as both come in 100% and focused!
BJ didn’t gas, he just got his ass kicked, plain and simple! The last time he looked good at 170, the sport was different, now the guys are cutting from heavier weights and are too big and too strong for a true LW. I don’t see BJ losing at LW the same way GSP won’t lose at ww. GSP moving to 185 is more realistic than a LW moving to ww. This has been proven with sherk also, his only losses are to incredible ww’s and BJ.
Overall, UFC 94 was the night of decisions. Nate Diaz’s standup looked great, but he lost the fight in the clinch and up against the cage.
Karo sucks…enough said!
Jones (the guy Bonnar fought) will be a beast considering he’s only 21, his raw talent alone is incredible! By the way, that elbow landed flush…to the back of the head!
Machida…as much as I don’t like his style, his win was very impressive!

Good intelligent post. rare on this site.

by Bennie Blanco from the Bronx on Feb 1, 2009 2:29 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Back here after taking Saturday away (mom and brother came down and spent the day with me, birthday was Sat). I was right on only 2 fights (Tavares and Fitch). I have never been so humbled in predicting fights in my LIFE! So I will not vent my frustration on losing any but the Guida decision.

I was never a big fan of Guida, I always rooted against him especially in the Griffin and Huerta fight, and I was pulling against him in the Danzig fight as well as that Diaz fight. He dry humped Danzig and won, and dry humped Diaz and won. I thought both those guys won those fights, and I am just AMAZED at how the judges gives him those decisions.

One other vent, is the fact that Bones Jones was able to drop Bonnar with a spinning elbow to the back of the head, and not get warned or ANYTHING! I know it was unintentional, but still.

Good job to GSP for making BJ not able to continue. Machida for knocking Silva senseless, and Karo for having amazing luck. I was wrong on everything, and have been wrong on most recent main events, (88, 89, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94). So if you want to know who will win, ask me who my picks are!

I don’t know about everyone else, but last night I came away most impressed with Lyoto Machida – just like the last few times he has fought. After last nights performance, I don’t know how anyone can not appreciate his style. Everyone was so dead set on ‘Thiago being this vicous striker that was going to kill the “boring” Machida’. Sorry guys, but Machida proved that he is head and shoulders against everyone he has faced in his career thus far.above everyone. He fought an undefeated THiago Silva and didn’t even get punched once! or if he did, I must have missed it. Machida dropped him three times and left him for dead in the center of the octagon at the buzzer of Round 1. Now you want to talk about an impressive performance!!! WOW!!! I am happy that I was having a bad run and Boner messed up my parlay because I ran to the computer and got Machida at -200 as he was entering the octagon.

BJ on the other hand, he just didn’t show up mentally. Even in the stare down, he didn’t look right. GSP was the one doing the “BJ rock”. GSP was once one of the most exciting fighters in MMA and sooo many people (not I) were so happy to see him dethrown the greatest WW of all time, Matt Hughes – because some people saw him as a “boring wrestler”. Pretty ironic, HUH??

And what was up with “Huggie Bear” Guida??? That was awful. He looked like a gay man hugging a straight man throughout the entire fight. Talk about not wanting to fight! If anyone was going to implement that strategy, I thought it would have been John Palakowski (that kid that hugged everyone this past season of TUF). After the fight, I called that he would win by split decision, and people thought I was crazy. But I knew that one judge would discredit Clay for showing zero aggression. I found that even more boring tha lay n pray.

VM i agree with machida man that was the most impressive fight i’ve ever seen in MMA he outclassed silva by a mile and a half.. i didnt like guida at all either but i knew that fight was probably going to be that way just wish diaz would’ve allowed a takedown and pulled guard more and try the submission game he’s got he had chances to win he just allowed guida to implement his boring tactic.. guida=more boring then machida.. i also will say machida is one of the most exciting fighters to watch now not because hes aggressive but because you just never know when he is coming he just does it

by c-war on Feb 1, 2009 3:52 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

C-War, I agree. BJ basically tapped out on strikes. If he really wanted to continue, he would have said something to his corner about not stopping it.

BJ ate his own words. hahaha!

by ProKev on Feb 1, 2009 4:50 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

BJ said “I want it to stop” twice when his corner was asking him if he wanted to continue, and “I wanna speak with the DR”. It wasn’t a DR stoppage.

Not a fan of BJ making excuses. If he wants to look for an excuse, he has nowhere but to look at himself.

GSP simply out muscled BJ and proved that he cannot dominate a division above 155.

by ViolentMike on Feb 1, 2009 3:33 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Kevin, great post. It is nice to see educated MMA fans write intelligent things and admit when someone is better, plain and simple. We as fans are lucky to see great events and great fighters and GSP and Penn will go down as two of the best…ever.

by Jake on Feb 1, 2009 2:43 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Diddo Kevin, I predicted all all the main-fight card winners correctly, but was too much of a puss to money on it. Bones is the man. I’ve always been a fan of Machida and now there’s a reason for more people to jump on board. I think GSP could put on 15lbs of muscle and not loose speed due to his athleticism. I say let’s see the A. Silva fight sooner rather than later before one of them gets injured or something stupid happens.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Feb 1, 2009 4:44 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, the party I was at had over 50% of people going for Penn, and I was trying to educate them. I don’t agree that GSP can hang at 185 with Anderson though.

i’m a diehard fan of GSP, probably my favorite athlete, but i agree with matt king. i don’t want to see GSP go up in weight to fight silva. look what happened to penn when he came up to fight GSP.

Very Great post Kevin. Last night was great, i was surprised to see so many people going for Penn that there were. Everywhere there was “TEAM HAWAII” shirts. GSP is an animal, I’m really looking foward to his next fight.

coincidence he dominated the only rounds his corner rubbed him down?

by inho on Feb 2, 2009 2:32 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Whatever dude. Penn got beat down the entire fight. It was a complete domination. Penn had no answers to anything that GSP threw down. Plain and simple. It does show that there will always be haters no matter what. Your boy lost, just let it be…

@Kevin

Good post man. I always look forward to reading your posts. We dont always agree on the fighters themselves, but you always write up good quality posts. Keep it up Kev.

Thanks for keeping it real Kev. The Vaseline excuse going on at the moment is hilarious. Get over it BJ nuthuggers. I’d like to see Georges fight Andy at some point, but just not right away. Set him up against Okami, Gouveia or maybe Bisping. For now, let’s see if Alves and Anthony Johnson are ready for the big leagues. Georges “The Game Plan” St Pierre. The P4P best.

by DH on Feb 2, 2009 12:25 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

While BJ did get his ass whooped it’s wrong to place the fault of wrong doing on him and his fans. GSP cheated! Just because you believe he didn’t have too – which I tend to agree with also – does not mean he didn’t cheat. That just makes it all the more stupid that he did cheat. What people should be talking about it is the fact that GSP or his corner man or both cheated. The argument about whether he would’ve won without was completely tarnished the second they decided to slop vasaline all over his body.

by Jayroc on Feb 3, 2009 2:36 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Our boy Georges has nothin to worry about. There were cameras everywhere and officials there when the vaseline was removed. BJ always has an excuse for his losses i.e posting x-rays of his ribs on his site etc… Reminicent of one Ricardo Arona. Am going to go watch the again now see him get trounced.

by NameNotRequired on Feb 1, 2009 2:01 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree, but Vaseline doesn’t just get “removed” you ever try to wash it off? it’s oil based, not water, so it takes a lot to get it off, not just a “wipe.” that said, it had NO impact on the fight!

by kevin on Feb 1, 2009 2:08 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I think that it could have helped neutralize BJ’s high guard from the bottom…but overall BJ got his ass kicked and I don’t think this incident led to him losing the fight…but why did this happen…I’m not sure I believe it was a mistake…or was this the first time this dude was cornering someone…you know…for the “Biggest Fight in UFC History”…

by Fiend on Feb 1, 2009 3:04 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

dude it wasn’t like his whole back was covered in it. The guy was rubbing GSP’s shoulder blades which really, is a pretty small portion of his back when you take the whole thing into consideration. And yes, vaseline is tough to get off, but with a dry towel 2-3 good hard wipes would do the trick, I’m sure.

by Anthony on Feb 1, 2009 4:06 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

If you re-watch the fight you can see it happening. Phil Nurse put Vaseline on his face then used the same hand to massage GSP’s back- the base of his neck actually. It was an accident. GSP is not a cheat and he was in danger of nothing. BJ should be ashamed of himself.

by DSmith on Feb 1, 2009 4:10 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

St. Pierre’s sub-defense was very good, his arm/shoulder position was what stopped BJ from utilizing the high guard, not to mention Georges’ strength and great passes.

Honestly I left the bar last night going “holy shit, nobody at 155 is going to be able to put BJ away… That guy’s got an amazing chin”, I respected BJ more than ever… after reading this.. not so much. Hopefully he drops it.

by fleet on Feb 1, 2009 4:19 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

His posturing is phenomenal. I tried to point out what crazy improvment GSP made in hip switching and posturing since their last fight. But people said “GSPs wrestling has always been good” as if I was off base. I also said that GSP would use the side mount more this time. Happy to see it all went down like that.

OH, and BJ STFU about the vasoline before you lose fans.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Feb 1, 2009 4:48 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I remember that Ovaries, we had a short discussion on the finer points on why his wrestling was tailor made for MMA unlike just dominant wrestlers like kos. This performance was just all that. The way he fought BJ’s guard was just something else. Just straight up blueprint exposed him.

by NameNotRequired on Feb 1, 2009 5:31 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree Punch, GSP has great posture inside of guard, and you cant get the rubber guard, high guard, with someone that postures up like GSP, it also makes it difficult to Triangle him as well. Not to mention that GSP passed at will last night.

by Matt25 on Feb 1, 2009 11:36 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Georges won the first and dominated the second. If people actually believe his camp would risk the fight by putting vaseline on his back between the 2nd and third rounds they’re ignorant. That was the only round that the incident had happened and didn’t happen in between the earlier rounds because the commision is around both fighters corners at all times. Nothing will come of this other than BJ and some of his fans excuses

by jtl87 on Feb 1, 2009 2:10 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

BJ and his team are bigger b*tches than I thought! What a bunch of tools. Instead of taking his @ss whooping like a man. And just go back to LW and take care of business there. Get some of his mystique back, he chooses to be a little B*TCH!

by JV on Feb 1, 2009 2:14 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I am glad BJ lost. I agree with the writer though. The stuff on GSP back would have no bearing on how the fight went last night. GSP dominated Penn and made me happy. Now to say Penn should not say anything is crazy. If it was against the rules there should be reprecussions made by the athletic commission. No they should not take the title away. They should however fine GSP. There should be standards set. The question is was there any on his back in the first round when the fight was still a fight. There is no good reason vasaline should be on a fighters body period (other than the face). I cant think of any. I lso cant think of how it would accidently get on his back except to do it on purpose. Gsp is a great fighter. Glad he won. He should be fined. It only stops thing like this from happening in the future

BJ should go back home, put a soother in his big mouth and shut the hell up for once. The fight was a one sided beating and as if GSP would ever take part in anything so retarded.

by syncro on Feb 1, 2009 10:23 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Seriously you people need to take a step back, stop letting your decisions be influenced by your “favorite” fighter and re watch that fight.

I forget exactly which round it was but you could tell how hard of a time BJ was having keeping that high guard, or coming close to restricting a limb/getting any leverage that would allow a submission attempt. It was extremely obvious that something was causing there to be absolutely no friction between BJ’s legs and GSP’s body. Now we read that there was some mix up where someone was putting Vaseline on his back? Your telling me there is no chance they didn’t wipe it all off? Give me a break.

Personally I feel even if you were to ignore this whole situation GSP still would of taken that fight. His size and strength prove to be to much for other fighters in the same weight class, let alone true LW fighter.

Let’s regain our class and composure in the wake of the Vaseline allegations. Let’s not involve ourselves in these arguments because our guy won and we have nothing to be ashamed of. BJ came out in good shape and was simply out-classed. Let’s leave it at that. Damn, was he out-classed (sorry).

Yep, if Nurse did it on purpose that was pretty low, but to keep it real that little bit of residual vasiline on his hands can’t possibly be more than the (sometimes) gobs on the faces that end up getting smeared all over both fighters bodies. Look at that huge Gob that was on GSP’s eyebrow (Hughes 3)that Jackson was trying to wipe off and the ref wouldn’t let him. We know Matt didn’t punch it off, so it likely ended up smeared on Matt’s body. BJ just can’t handle not being #1. It all or nothing for BJ. I hope he doesn’t retire. Mind you I’m sure BJ’s talk of retiring was more towards Dana sweetening the pot for his next contract negotiations.

BJ is not a likable person, but he is a top-notch fighter. That being said, he can never beat Georges. BJ didn’t look himself because he wasn’t in control, nor was he allowed any opportunities to capitalize on. Georges has evolved more than Penn since their last battle. If they fought again, Georges would only finish him sooner. That belt is chilling out in Canada for a while.

It is you’re; you are = you’re.

Vaseline – what is next for complaints? Remember this was between rds 2 & 3. What did BJ do in the 3rd round? Oh, that’s right, he was being dominated without the use of his useless rubber guard which he only used in the first round.

Vaseline is all over the friggin fight – you hit someone in the face and you get it on your gloves. You grab your other glove when you are going for a takedown or to prevent a sub move and then you get it on your fingers and palms. You then use your own hands to grab another guy or hold his back down so now you have vaseline on the other guy which you put there. So, perhaps GSP should put in a complaint against the BJ camp for greasing up GSP’s back during the fight. GIVE IT UP PENN. Go back to Hilo and smoke some more dope.

9-11, JFK, The Holocaust, GSP/Penn 2. The answers are there in front of everyone, but if you choose to ignore THE TRUTH, then it is I who questions your delusions.

Answer me this Maniacs. Had BJ won this fight, (which he would have if the UFC didnt fix the fight) what would have helped in the long run with PPV buys/events? One guy going back and forth defending 2 belts once a year, changing up his weight or having 2 seperate champions defend 2-3 times a year?

Damn adam, i am pleasantly surprised by this unless it’s not really you. Good to see!! Do you now believe that BJ has been overrated since he first beat up hughes(which was a stylistic cakewalk)?

by NameNotRequired on Feb 1, 2009 2:07 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

no, when he did that there was no GSP, no ando, and im not sure about Fedor, or atleast Fedor wasnt as big yet, when he did that Hughes was P4P #1 and he had just beat gomi before that and then a Gracie at 185 to make it 3 in a row he, he was #1 in the world at that time dude, sorry, thats still a fact. Then he even tried to beat Machida, lost but tried so losing to Machida didnt even really drop him on the list cause he wast supposed to beat him anyway, it just add to the woa factor of BJ that he would try and almost win, then beat another gracie at 185, Renzo, he was still #1 to me, then GSP beat him, that did it to me, it made Hughes #1 again, and BJ 2 GSP #3 or 4, then bj lost to hughes and made it solid, then GSP took over for a while while bj made his way up, Ando blew up, Fedor blew up, and GSP made it solid last night that he is better then Penn, only guys that think he was #1 this entire time awere over rating him ya know, i thought he could be the best but he IS NOT, GSP isnt either, but he will always be higher on the chain than BJ. ANd BJ first the towell now this, dude, please, come on, for me!!! stop.

This has nothing to do with BJ getting destroyed or crying. IF the cornerman cheated there should be repercussions. IF he didn’t no big deal.

I seperate the results from this incident and look at it alone.

BJ would of lost no matter what.

If he cheated he should pay!

by Bennie Blanco from the Bronx on Feb 1, 2009 2:23 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

There’s a gif of how it happened on bloodyelbow fanshots. It was completely accidental. Phil Nurse was trying to slow GSP’s breathing after applying the vaseline on his head so he put his left hand on GSP’s back and his right on his chest to compress it. You could see that he didn’t even realize he was doing it as he was completely concentrating on gsp.

by JS on Feb 1, 2009 2:03 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I thought GSP explained it fairly well as an accident of an over zealous cornerman on the “Inside MMA” show on ESPN.

BUT it looks like BJ and his legions of fans just cannot accept defeat. It just makes BJ look like more of a whiner, bad loser, spoiled child etc.

Penn’s ego just cannot accept that he lost so badly. It’s devastating to him and he needs any excuse. It doesn’t help that BJ accuses EVERYbody of cheating now.

BJ. You were beaten. By a better man. You have to just deal with it.

BUT… if the cornerman was cheating this should be looked into. Dumb move by the cornerman to try and give an edge to a guy who was already clearly winning.

BJ could not have been more owned. And he looked psyched out before the fight even began.

But he defended the takedown and didn’t get hurt in the first (though where were his strikes?!!).

The only time he made an attempt at sub was when he pulled rubber guard in the second. I really hope that there wasn’t vaseline all over GSP’s back at that point because that was Penn’s only shot at doing something in the fight.

Obviously GSP had nothing to do with it. He is as honest as they come in my eyes. But if his cornerman did it even as a “mistake” he is an idiot because the last thing we need from this fight is controversy. The only consolation I got after the utter drubbing of BJ Penn was that GSP put the whole thing to bed once and for all.

by Bennie Blanco from the Bronx on Feb 1, 2009 2:38 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Your assuming that the vaseline was intentionally put on his back. Why couldn’t it be like was stated by GSP, simply that after applying vaseline to Georges face, his corner rubbed his back and when noticed, it was rubbed off immediately. Does Georges strike you as a cheat??? Be good losers and quit bitchin, your fighter got beatdown.

by Couchchamp on Feb 1, 2009 2:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

GSP would never cheat.

I am worried about his cornerman though.

GSP is pure class, much respect.

GSP has had the same corner men for over 2 years- it was NOT intentional. Watch it again.

by DSmith on Feb 1, 2009 8:31 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I’m not saying GSP’s corner did this intentionally or accidentally, but if it was intentional they picked a strange time to cheat. You’d think they would either do it at the beginning of the fight or save it for when their boy is losing. For Huerta, there was a case…but last night when this happened GSP was dominating BJ, so I can’t see the cornerman deciding that lube was necessary at that moment.

by BigFatManiac on Feb 1, 2009 2:30 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Im a huge Penn fan and in the end he put his foot in his mouth, but he didnt lose his title. He is still dominating the 155 division! GSP is freak of nature and the toughest guy at 170 in the world!

by Joe on Feb 1, 2009 2:12 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

BJ would of lost whether or not anyone cheated.

PROBLEM IS, someone may have cheated.

It’s not accepted and there should be punishment IF they did intentionally cheat.

If it was an accident and minor, then no big deal. But if the corner guy was trying to cheat, then make them pay!

Right is right. Wrong is wrong.

by Bennie Blanco from the Bronx on Feb 1, 2009 2:16 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

by Bennie Blanco from the Bronx on Feb 1, 2009 2:17 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I agree, if a preliminary investigation finds that this was intentional, or aided GSP in any way, then fine the whole crew. However, no one other then the biggest of BJ huggers would believe that either of these things happened. If it happened, it was a mistake. More importantly, it had no impact on the outcome of a serious beatdown. BJ and his camp (family) are b*tches, pure and simple.

by SilasM on Feb 1, 2009 2:28 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with most of what you said.

BJ can be a crybaby, but if the guy was cheating I would like to know. Interested to see where this goes. Cameras were everywhere.

If the guy reached in for more vaseline after doing the face and the put it on the back, that isn’t an accident.

Florian said the same about Huerta… Jackson camp also.

by Bennie Blanco from the Bronx on Feb 1, 2009 2:44 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

exactly, cameras were everywhere, pretty dumb time to intentionally cheat huh?

by McArthur on Feb 1, 2009 3:25 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Give it up already. How much vaseline do you think could be left after they wiped it off. Dry skin is one thing, but sweaty skin it doesn’t stick as well. They probably wiped more off that got there naturally from the fight. Where do you think all that vaseline goes that they keep appling to their faces. What? Does it evaporate. No it gets smeared all over both fighters. It’s a lame excuse and just shows Penn’s true colors.

by Gord on Feb 1, 2009 8:20 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

They are all going crazy on BJ’s website.

“GSP cheated” etc.

Way to accept defeat like a man BJ.

by Teep on Feb 1, 2009 2:18 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think GSP cheated, his cornerman may have. This needs to be investigated though. A cornerman knows what is appropriate and what isn’t. You know when you are cornering for GSP vs. BJ where you can and can’t put vaseline. I’m sure that guy has cornered before, so it is hard for me to believe that he did that accidentally.

Anyhow, BJ still loses this fight, but right is right and wrong is wrong.

by Bennie Blanco from the Bronx on Feb 1, 2009 2:20 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Bennie, Im sure youve done alot of cornering in mega fights like that to know that a cornerman doesnt make mistakes right?

by JV on Feb 1, 2009 2:25 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I’m just assuming that a cornerman is a professional.

If I’m a professional and do something for a living, I know what is legal and not. I’m assuming this guy didn’t come off the streets a few weeks ago to corner.

I’m assuming he knows the rules and the athletic commission clearly lays out that: you are not allowed to place vaseline anywhere but the fighters face.

Are you saying that they didn’t know the rule or that he was in such a hurry that he slathered vaseline on his back?

by Bennie Blanco from the Bronx on Feb 1, 2009 2:28 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It was Phil Nurse for christsake!!!! A professional?

by DSmith on Feb 1, 2009 8:37 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I did notice BJ could not seem to lock his legs in a higher position on GSP from guard. But it had nothing to do with GSP’s chiseled shape from shoulders to hips or the fact they were both sweaty.

by DJ on Feb 1, 2009 2:19 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Once again this is because GSP postures up very well. Take even a few BJJ classes and you will understand. You cant get a rubber guard on a guy that postures up like GSP does. The only time BJ almost had a good rubber guard was when he pulled GSP down to his chest, but GSP immediately postured up again.

by DZZ on Feb 1, 2009 2:22 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Everyone is missing the point.

Yes, BJ would of lost anyway but if the cornerman cheated there should be repercussions.

What do we say? No big deal, GSP would of won anyways. Maybe true but if something illegal happened it should be investigated regardless.

by Bennie Blanco from the Bronx on Feb 1, 2009 2:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Bennie, check my earlier post. You are right, but lets face it. It was NSAC guys who noticed it and cleaned it up. If they thought it was intentional or impacted the fight they would have started an investigation on thier own, but they didn’t. This is nothing, but a man being classless in defeat!

by SilasM on Feb 1, 2009 2:31 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Hey Bernie,
I for one am not missing the point. I agree with you (wrong is wrong) but it’s kind of like a groin strike. It is illegal, the fighters are given time to recover, but do they ever completely recover and even if so, the seed is planted that it may happen again. All of which, can have an impact on a fight.
If GSP’s camp were to receive a fine, would it actually matter? The outcome stays the same and Greg Jackson is slightly poorer.
So, I think most of us are just taking it for what it is and moving on…

I have personally said for a while, and said it on a thread a while back, that BJ is overrated. He’s got arguably the greatest natural skills set in MMA, but he doesn’t use them to his full potential. Having the goods, and using them to the fullest, are different. If you are a great talent, but lose because you’re lazy, you’re not a legendary fighter. You’re a gifted athlete that is too lazy to become legendary.

Bennie is making a good point that the issue has nothing to do with whether GSP won the fight. Obviously he was killing BJ all night.

But the Vaseline thing is a separate issue. “Mistake” or not once that stuff is on your back it doesn’t come off easy. Certainly not with a quick towel wipe. The guy who put it on him is either an idiot or was looking to stack the deck a little. Either way, it’s not cool.

Florian mentioned some precedent in the Huerta fight. Let’s all forget about the BJ complaining aspect. We all know he got tooled and probably is complaining anyway he can. But no more vaseline “mistakes” from now on from this camp, please.

The appropriate response would be a fine and not allowing that guy to corner ever again.

by revjames13 on Feb 1, 2009 2:44 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Man, who has an answer for someone who wont get off of you. The same exact fight he had with Mac. Clay’s opponenet looking at their corner for help. You guys who are bashing him, is it illegal to fight like that? NO! So keep on nuthuggin’ and leave Clay alone. He sucks at striking, doesn’t really have a style other than “leaching” a win away from the opponent, BUT he is fun to watch. He got his butt handed to him when he tried to strike so of course he went back to bull riding. IT’S LEGAL! He basically does the best with what God gave him. I don’t think he will ever beat a great MMA fighter but give hm a break.

Mania,

It would be great if you could get a hold of Greg Jackson and Phil Nurse to get their side of the story. This story is gaining some momentum and it would suck to see something like this taint the victory. These accusations definitely need response from both sides.

(I hope I’m allowed to post this link, not sure, sorry if it is not allowed)

GSP was breathing hard after the first round (if you listen to the audio, you can ear them talk about it), and his cornerman pressed his chest with both hands to slow his breathing. The same cornerman had just put some vaseline on GSP’s face. I don’t think there was much vaseline left. Saying they were greasing up GSP is far fetched.

Please bj just move on people are gonna loose alot of respect for him if he keeps making excuses. I was rotting for him on saturday but he oviously had no chance with the vasaline on or off.

Good post.

You wonder who is in BJ’s camp telling him he is the greatest and he should have won, if it wasn’t for the vaseline he would submitted GSP. A joke.

by Nick on Feb 1, 2009 3:45 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Classless from Penn and his crew. The officials removed the vaseline (fair enough it’s tough to wipe it all off). There was no foul play on GSP’s part.

Hell it’s just total garbage that Penn is coming out with, it’s not like he was even close to locking anything in and GSP didn’t slip out of anything. Just nonsense. He should take the loss like a real man. He’s coming across as a pathetic loser. GSP won fair and square and Penn is just bitter and trying to discredit the better fighter. Show me one instance where this supposed greasing had an impact.

Grow up BJ. You’ll lose a lot of fans with this carry on.

by RobH86 on Feb 1, 2009 3:38 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

No doubt, I think this is totally classless of BJ. And also to not give an interview after the fight. He’s not a gracious loser; he always blames someone else rather than just to man-up and admit he got handled by a better fighter!

by wesman on Feb 1, 2009 4:36 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly. Matt Serra was very gracious and respectful in defeat to Georges after the rematch. So was Matt Hughes who many people rag on but in fairness to him he’s always been very humble and respectful both in victory and defeat. Hell even when Nate lost last night he was a class act which surprised me a little but I was delighted to see it.

BJ though is coming off as a disrespectful, bitter man. Borderline pathetic. He may lose some fans. Perhaps he was too exhausted for interviews but his latest stunt doesn’t sit well with me. Perennial excuse maker.

I honestly liked BJ going into this fight, he got beat, thats that. You win some, you lose some. The latching on to conspiracy/cheating thing was just for laughs at how desperate I could look. I even threw out the 9-11/JFK thing to satirize it even more.

Everyone check out the GIF. at bloodyelbow to see what actually happened. It looked like Phil Nurse went from rubbing a little vasoline on GSP’s forehead then proceeded to rub between the shoulder blades to help him breath. The commission noticed it and wiped his back with a towel. It’s pretty clear to me that it was a mistake and not intentional. See for yourself.

What an idiot Phil is. Anyone sitting by ringside that night? I know everyone is looking at what was shown on PPV but who knows how much rubbing of the back happened? I’ve watched the PPV over and I’ve seen the GIFs out there showing Phil rubbing GSP’s back briefly, but who saw it in person? And if Phil was warned in-between the first and second round, why rubbed GSP’s back between the second and third round.

BJ Penn didn’t develop as George did , George takes it to another level every fight and leaves you the fans and the appointments stunted , it was clear that George will win the fight but i would never have guessed with that much domination. I ’m surprised at the BJ Penn fans leaning toward BJ even after he lost badly . Also Florian will also win his fight against BJ but hopefully with not much domination because if that does happen then BJ performance will be questionable

I WON about £300 on my bets on gsp machida fitch guida karo jones and tavares…boom!

I have lost all respect for BJ as a fighter and a man!

firstly how the fuck was he so slooooooowwww??? even in Round 1.

Neways PENN SAID HE WOULD FIGHT TO THE DEATH!….pity the punk quit sittin on his ass and if you even dare try to say it was his trainers who called it…BJ didnt even try to put up a case to let the fight continue.

The fact that he is now complaining about this vaseline non sense which is a crystal clear mistake is pathetic although rules are rules so to be 100% legitimate the athletic commission must look into it and punish GSP if neccessary but thats just a legal matter as we all know it had no effect on the fight so hopefully there ar eno reprecussions!

Instead of wastng time complainng he should be apologizing to the world for calling GSP a quitter and talking so much shit and lies when he could clearly not back it up.

he said GSP tapped during the 1st Matt Serra fight…well maybe he did quit physically but BJ quit mentally last night and because of him talking all the shit hyping this fight and then he couldnt even touch GSP im am sorely disappointed and even though i never liked BJ’s attitude and i only enjoyed watching him …I now despise him and hope Ken Flo can musker a miracle and beat BJ into retirement.

thats all the hatred out of my veins..haha

P.S. Machida = Wow I was in love with him before the fight and now FINALLY all you guys who have been hating on Lyoto’s brand of ‘boring’ fighting can eat your words and appreciate his skill because at the end of the day Machida doesnt come out all guns blazing – he waits, times and then if there is an opening he takes it and if it is a large opening he finishes a la last night! …but please Let my boy Rampage have 1st crack at Evans cus once Machida gets his shot I cant see anybody being able to beat him!

Thanks UFC gr8 card i kinda had tears in my eyes when GSP won the fight….the good honest hard worker prevailed (reminded me of that story about the lazy squirrel and the hard working squirrel who kept working to get nuts for the winter) lol

I like watching BJ and GSP fight but GSP didn’t beat the ‘best BJ has ever been’… BJ wasn’t even there he looked like he was still carrying that rock underwater.

To everyone who says the vaseline didn’t matter… intentional or not it’s an advantage… it’s cheating. If Nurse is dumb enough to make a mistake like that he shouidn’t be up there. To me it’s like saying the trainer accidently gave the fighter steroids.
How can you say what did affect or not affect the outcome especially for a fighter who is so strong with submissions.

by Matt25 on Feb 2, 2009 1:17 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I know I don’t have much credibility after GSP humiliated BJ Penn, but let’s face it, BJ Penn looked terrible from the jump. He did not bring his fighting spirit and was psyched out.

GSP ran right over him without breaking a sweat and as such, I don’t think that he did anything that is going to make Anderson Silva exactly quake in his boots.

AS would have huge physical advantages over GSP, who is used to being the strongest cat in town who can more or less manhandle most of his competition. I think GSP’s only real weakness is going to be against a guy that can light him up on his feet and be good enough in the clinch and takedowns to avoid getting dumped on his back.

If Anderson Silva isn’t some major GSP Kryptonite, I don’t know who is. After his win over Penn I’ve got GSP as the #1 P4P because of the quality of his competition. I used to think it was utterly ludicrous to even mention GSP fighting AS. Now I will say that the fight might actually happen and that GSP might have a very small chance at beating him.

But let’s not forget that AS is the best striker on the planet, light years ahead of BJ Penn or anyone GSP has ever faced by a long shot.

But screw it, now I want to see that fight. Just don’t think that AS is not being humble. The thing that sticks out in my mind from that fight is how bad BJ looked, not how great GSP looked. Granted GSP made him look bad. but BJ looked out of it before the bell even rang and looked slow and sluggish before they even clinched up.

If BJ Penn brought the best version of himself and was on fire and then GSP turned him back and sent him packing by having an answer for everything, AS would likely have been much more impressed.

by revjames13 on Feb 1, 2009 10:14 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Anderson is a very dangerous opponent for anyone and has a striking advantage over everyone. His TD defence has been shown to be nothing special. One thing that you have to take into consideration in a fight is, when a great striker fears the takedowns his striking ability is GREATLY reduced. Timmy never touched Randy and Randy was able to tee off on him for 5 rounds. Is Randy a better striker than AA, not even close, but it almost appeared that way when it was so much easier for Randy to hit Tim. GSP isn’t exactly Machida when it comes to avoiding getting hit, but he has taken VERY little damage in 20 fights and was only in trouble once from getting KOed when he was a fraction of himself (Serra 1). Everyone but Cote played right into Silva’s game and they paid for it. One of GSP’s greatest strengths is to not only not play into his opponents strengths, but to take away those strengths and leave them feeling helpless. I realize Silva is a step up, but it’s not like GSP is just eeking out wins against the cream of the crop at WW, he’s pretty much making them look like amatures. I can’t think of a fight (that he won) where he didn’t break his opponents will. I don’t care what anyone says, Cote got into Silva’s head, just like I said he was going to. When asked if he (silva) would like to fight GSP, he said if the fans want to see it. If GSP can take-down BJ and Rashad, he WILL take Silva down also. If BJ can’t even come close to subbing GSP, then it’s unlikely Silva will either. GSP has sick top control,so all he has to do is get him down before eating to much leather. I honestly think it will be easier for GSP to dump Anderson on his head, than it will be for a TD WARY (thus much less effective striking) Silva to light up GSP.

by yoshitownsend on Feb 2, 2009 1:55 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

At first I thought this sounded pretty rediculous, and just said “wow bj just take your loss without trying to find an excuse”..

But then I re-watched the fight; the vasoline is blatantly being applied on GSPs back and shoulders at the end of Round 1 by one of his cornermen..

At the end of the 2nd round, when it switches to GSPs corner you can see the commissioner is visibly angry and pointing, and trying to wipe GSP down with a towel..

At the end of the 3rd round, the same cornerman from the first round wipes vasoline on GSPs shoulders again, right in front of the commissioner and he gets mad and points at the guy, and they try and wipe it off GSP again with a towel..

Sorry that was definitely done on purpose; and if you watch it made a huge difference in the fight; after the first takedown in the second BJ threw up rubber guard right away and GSP just slipped out of it like it was nothing; this was right after the vasoline was applied..

Perhaps GSP would have still won anyways, but that was pretty blatant cheating and BJ is definitely in his right to file a complaint..

by Nazgum on Feb 1, 2009 10:28 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

GSP is one of my favorites and I really dont see him trying to cheat. But if it was on purpose that NSAC should take action.
However it did not have any effect on the fight. The reason BJ could not use his rubber guard on GSP is because GSP postures up very well. You have to be able to pull a guy down close to your chest to get a good rubber guard and that just doesnt happen when a guy like GSP can posture up like he does. Take just a few BJJ classes and you would understand this. Great posture while in guard can also prevent you from getting triangled. Really the only thing BJ could have worked for, while having GSP in his guard, was an arm bar.

BJ is a pussy. He lost fair & square and because he got beat so badly he has to make tons of excuses & look for any far-fetched reason to explain why he couldn’t do better than a rookie could have done against GSP.

BJ has no honor, no discipline, no pride, and deserves ZERO respect!! He’s a punk that needs to go back to mommy & cry like the bitch he is.

BJ said GSP was a bitch for “quitting” due to the strikes from Matt Serra, so that means BJ is an even bigger bitch for begging the doc to end the fight as his corner told Herb Dean & the doc they quit!!

BJ is a sore loser for saying they will file a complaint for “excessive” vaseline for GSP, an amount that was removed before the round started & could be a problem for BJ or advantage for GSP… that’s what a loser who can’t man up & accept being beaten would do… something that rich-boy without heart BJ Penn would totally do!!!

BJ… go away – we don’t need you in MMA and we don’t want you!! Go back to Hilo & hang with the other crybaby bitches would can’t run with the big dogs of the UFC elite!!!

if you watched that fight, st pierre was toweled off between rounds; every round, I think. Thus, when the fighting actually began, st pierre was about as dry as a fighter can be under those circumstances (i.e.: hot arena, prespiring fighter).

this is just another case of an asshole from hawaii trying to tarnish another man’s triumph. Remember: Penn accused hughes and st pierre of being on roids when they fought him and we all know about that sickening display when he licked joe stevenson’s blood off his gloves following their fight.

if penn’s upbringing is what they call parenting in hawaii, then its no wonder they have such a drug and delinquency problem in that shit-hole part of the world

I want a third fight so st pierre can give penn lasting brain damage

Anderson is way better than BJ in the clinch though. Wonder what GSP’s game plan would be for him. Shooting for the takedown and punishing him from side-control all night? No way AS gasses out like BJ or doesn’t come to fight like BJ.

I am impressed as hell that GSP would think about moving up to face him, because AS could put a big dent in GSP’s and send him back to 170 like GSP just sent BJ back to 155.

I’d say that sparring with Rashad (another current UFC champ remember) who is very fast & resourceful would be good training for someone like Silva… but no guarantee for a win. GSP would give Silva a challenge he hasn’t seen in a long time, if at all. look back at Silva’s fights (not the Leben beat-down or Frankiln laugh-fests) and you’ll see that Silva isn’t without flaws in his game.

anyone can lose on any given night… look at how Serra got by GSP and you can see that sometimes lucky is better than good.

people thought Urijah was unbeatable… just like some think about Torres – but fact is that everybody loses eventually. just ask Royce, Rickson, & Renzo Gracie.

In Alves’ recent win over Josh Koscheck on Oct. 25 in Chicago, he went into the cage at an unheard-of 199 pounds after making 171, which would make St. Pierre the rare smaller welterweight if Alves could do it again.

The point is now apparently moot, but they’re still bitching about it:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/josh_gross/02/02/penn-st-pierre-post-fight/1.html

“Late Sunday, Penn’s representatives decided against filing the complaint, which has already been drawn up by the Hawaiian’s family attorney, first thing Monday, a reaction perhaps to some initial communication between the camps. Distance from the fight will also yield breathing room to make a decision on the rest of his career. But considering how his fight transpired, and with the apparent controversy over tactics in St. Pierre’s corner, Valentino believes Penn could have a change of heart.

“I’m not making excuses for B.J.’s fight,” he said. “What happened, happened. St. Pierre was a better fighter. But B.J. couldn’t get his ground game off because his legs were slipping off. His hands were slipping off. He couldn’t get going. It wore him out. That could have been a factor in the fight.”

Quit the whining BJ, you were out-classed in every sense of the word.

bj could have taken a prefight bath in ky jelly, crisco, and vaseline and gsp still would have had him spread out like jesus on the ground performing skull surgery

You guys should try going back several pages on this site, its halarious reading the arguments of how this is impossible and that, by the way ((adamg) who was the winner? Who ever got gsp by 4th round tko was it. For months I was picking gsp by either decision or by late tko, I guess it was late tko, I thought it would be close not so one sided. God I was really hoping this fight wouldn’t end in controversy like the first one, jesus gsp fans can’t win.

Chuck is an idiot, he was the one who started the finger-pointing to GSP’s corner. I remember he was asked in an interview who he thought would win between GSP and Penn and he said "Oh I’m not sure, BJ is my friend, I can’t say" which of course means he knew BJ was gunna get destroyed. He just sturred up a bunch of shit cus BJ was going to need any kind of excuse to help ease the pain. The important thing is BJ knows in his heart that he simply got mauled into submission.

BJ is a moron. If he really uses this as an excuse for why he lost, it will reak of desperation. He got the shit beat out of him, does he really think a tiny dab of vaseline had anything to do with that? It was quite satisfying to see that smug bastard getting pwnd on the ground.

Vaseline below the face is gay. A TAINTED win. Not really satisfying.
