UFC Quick Quote: Thiago Alves 'praying' for Georges St. Pierre win

thiago alves

"I’m praying everyday for St. Pierre -- St. Pierre all the way, baby. For myself, for my camp and everybody, the MMA fans … I’m going for GSP!"

-- Number one welterweight contender Thiago Alves shares his hopes with Cage Writer regarding the outcome of tonight's blockbuster showdown between 170-pound champion Georges St. Pierre and lightweight titlist BJ Penn, echoing similar statements to that of Jon Fitch. Alves and Fitch -- and more than likely the rest of the top players in the division -- do not want to see the pace of the title defenses come to a screeching halt, which would more than likely happen if Penn wins tonight. He'd be on the hook to defend both titles (170 and 155), meaning that he'd have to be willing to fight very often to keep things moving in both classes.

100% agree with Alves – but I for one don’t think it will be a concern once GSP wins.

by ufcaddict on Jan 31, 2009 7:13 PM EST up reply actions

dont forget that matt hughes was able to take alves down! and gsp beat hughes and sherk who are a couple of the best wrestlers in mma

by brendan on Jan 31, 2009 8:29 PM EST up reply actions

GSP will own Alves, not to put anything against Alves but GSP has fought the best and came on top time and time again Alves is just starting to move up and GSP will be to much for him.

by Beaver on Feb 1, 2009 2:00 AM EST up reply actions

Im a BJ Nuthugger (ya, i’l admitt it) but GSP whooped his ass….from what ive seen Alves VS GSP….GSP will dominate.

by The5thBeatle on Feb 1, 2009 12:30 PM EST up reply actions

ou dont have to pray too hard for GSP to win. It will just happen.

by c-war on Jan 31, 2009 4:35 PM EST reply actions

im praying with Thiago

by Braveheart uk&roi on Jan 31, 2009 4:36 PM EST reply actions

BJ will keep things moving just fine, 6 fights a year, 3 per belt, no worries. And youll def be in the 3 for WLWT Alves! STOP CRYING!!! BJ BJ BJ!!!

by ( (AdamG ) ) on Jan 31, 2009 4:39 PM EST reply actions

lol, He doesn’t even defend his one belt 3 times a year, he says he doesn’t like fighting that often, so what makes you think he’d want to defend 6 times a year? What possible evidence that he could fight 6 times a year comfortably are you drawing this from?

Srsly??

by ShaiZ on Jan 31, 2009 4:51 PM EST up reply actions

Sad for you AdamG, his wish will come true. Also in a fight, BJ wouldn’t stand with Alves – that’s right i said it.

by NameNotRequired on Jan 31, 2009 5:19 PM EST up reply actions

lol seriously… theyre going to need an interim belt if BJ wins

by brendan on Jan 31, 2009 6:52 PM EST up reply actions

This was better than a KO or sub. BJ got owned!!! He called it between rounds!! I thought most of the trash talking was to hype the fightÉ But when GSP didn`t even say hello to BJ after the fight It was more than trash talking. BJ is eating his words. GSP GSP GSP!!

penn is done. stick a fork in his potato head.

If Bj SOMEHOW does win..Alves will crush him.

by kdan1981 on Jan 31, 2009 4:44 PM EST reply actions

Since when did Alves become some crazy favorite over both Penn and GSP? Look I agree he is a threat but this kind of talk kdan1981 is ridiculous.

by The Anomaly on Jan 31, 2009 8:08 PM EST up reply actions

GSP vs Alves will be an awesome fight.
I think it will be better than tonight’s fight.

by Hero-Of-Time on Jan 31, 2009 4:46 PM EST reply actions

Jesse/Mania; you guys should add Alves and Fitch to the Rush list if you can, hell, add the entire WLWT division to his list, it wont matter.

by ( (AdamG ) ) on Jan 31, 2009 4:51 PM EST reply actions

You would think all the WWs besides Alves would want Penn to win. GSP has already crushed all the rest of them.

by PW on Jan 31, 2009 4:56 PM EST up reply actions

Again I’m a big Penn fan but I think GSP wins tonight big…..it may not even be a close fight….BJ has proven nothing at 170 besides losing to both GSP and Hughes….while GSP has been tearing through 170 pounders…not going to be a good night for Penn fans…..but Im paying, so I hope I’m wrong.

by Robert(1) on Jan 31, 2009 4:56 PM EST reply actions

Bj should defend the LW belt once against Florian and then make a permanent move to WW. There’s no one else at LW that warrants his attention. All of his challenges are at WW.

by revjames13 on Jan 31, 2009 5:43 PM EST reply actions

He just wants pierre to win becouse he will get the to fight for the belt in like 2-3 months if bj wins he will defend his lighweight belt first then go up to defend welterweight tittle in about 6 months
No amount of praying will help pieree thoght
BJ BJ BJ BJ BJ BJ BJ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alves will crush GSP and hold he belt.
Borrowed time, even if GSP wins.

by KS on Jan 31, 2009 6:11 PM EST reply actions

alves doesnt need to pray, gsp has already won the fight the only thing he should be praying is that bj doesnt chicken out

by jeff on Jan 31, 2009 6:14 PM EST reply actions

GSP will smash Alves …. so much better technically, he faster, has a better all round game. Alves has sick power but so does GSP .. when this fight happens expect GSP to mix up the stand up with some sick take downs followed by brutal GnP.

GSP v Alves – GSP Rd 2 via sick GnP or submission.

by DownUnder on Jan 31, 2009 6:19 PM EST reply actions

adamg is the most delusional nuthugger BJ fan of them all… i hope he can come to grips and wont slide into a deep depression when his boy bj gets owned in every aspect of mma tonight…

having said that i will probably be GOA for yrs if GSP loses the fight… GSP is the only one who can lose it.

by holyintellect on Jan 31, 2009 8:39 PM EST reply actions

gsp vs anderson silva is possible if gsp wins tonight and again against alves. but if bj wins he will fight florian then win or lose he will face alves. perhaps if gsp wins he can just go fight silva. if penn wins we will see gsp vs penn 3 some day.

by hatteras on Jan 31, 2009 8:46 PM EST reply actions

After BJ loses he’s got Florian and Deigo waiting for him at LW.

by JV on Jan 31, 2009 8:52 PM EST up reply actions

Alves got his wish…..GSP will beat him as well. I like Alves but he will not beat GSP.

by deadgrassinyard on Feb 1, 2009 1:37 AM EST reply actions

when alves came on stage he couldnt get his words right he was so nervous at the thought of fighting GSP…. you could see it in his eyes defeated already

by holyintellect on Feb 1, 2009 11:45 AM EST reply actions

Be carefull what you wish for, remember a light weight praying for the chance to fight gsp???? And alves along with most other fighters thought penn was the better fighter, I’m sure alves must be shitting himself now. Trust me gsp won’t just stand in front of alves taking his leg kicks, I’m sure he’ll attack his weakness’s like everyone else, but ya never know MMA is unpredictable it just takes one punch.

by nathan on Feb 1, 2009 1:06 PM EST reply actions

i would love to see alves stop gsp, and it is possible. GSP is known for screwing up, that is why he will never be the champ hughes was…..lol oh it’s damn true! In fact he is due for a hic-up about now. Alves….. Can you make weight big boy? Can you get down to 170 anymore? We will see. If so you can do it. GSP just shows how much crap he’s on from the vaseline incident. His jaw will not take a big blow from an animal. Just don’t have the backbone. lol I hope this enrages someone who loves gsp to write me back.

TELL DANA WHITE ALL THE FIGHTS SUCKED EXCEPT FOR THE DIAZ FIGHT AND THE JUDGES SCREWED THAT UP TOO. CLAY LIKES TO HOLD GUYS FROM THE BACK FOR MORE THAN THREE MINUTES AT A TIME… I KNOW WHAT WE CALL THAT AROUND HERE!!!!!!!

AFFLICTIONS LAST CARD WAS BETTER THAN UFC’S LAST NIGHT.
DANA WHITE IS A BIG HEADED IDIOT THAT CUSSES TO MUCH. KEEP SLIPPIN JERK!

by Tony P. Draper on Feb 1, 2009 3:06 PM EST reply actions

In Alves’ recent win over Josh Koscheck on Oct. 25 in Chicago, he went into the cage at an unheard-of 199 pounds after making 171, which would make St. Pierre the rare smaller welterweight if Alves could do it again.
