WEC Quick Quote: Jamie Varner put his body through Hell

"My medical bills are going to be way more than what I made in this fight. I had to get a bunch of X-Rays done, a CAT scan, I had to go get surgery on my hand, I'm gonna have to get my foot casted, I have to go back to the doctor and have my eyes checked out again, all that stuff adds up. It's crazy that people can sit there and talk shit about me when they have no idea what I did [on Sunday night]. I laid it all on the line, I put my body through Hell. My hand's broken, I can barely walk, my foot's broken, I'm on crutches and I got a cast on my hand. I don't know what the hell people wanted from me. It's crazy."

-WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner talks to Pro MMA Radio about his 4.5 round war with Donald Cerrone at WEC 38 'Varner vs. Cerrone.' "C-4″ and "Cowboy" put on a thrilling back-and-forth brawl for more than 20 minutes until the bout was stopped prematurely due to an illegal knee by Cerrone. A dazed Varner opted not to continue, sending it to the judges scorecards for a final decision and provided a disappointing ending to an otherwise great title fight. Afterwards, an incredulous Varner was lit up on the message boards for throwing in the towel - a criticism he maintains is unwarranted based on the abuse his body took during the fight.

He didn’t quit when he broke his hand. He quit when he took an illegal blow to the temple and couldn’t see. And after an almost 5 round war. Lay off the guy.

WHAAA!!!! cry me a river varner, we wanted you to finish the damn fight… not puss out last minute, is it too much to ask for you to defend your title for five rounds? if it is then go ahead and strip yourself of the belt loser

by brendan on Jan 28, 2009 1:18 PM EST up reply actions

So would you let me illegally knee you in the face? How about after I knock you retarded with the knee, I stomp your balls until your blue in the face? Don’t puss out after I do it either.

by c-war on Jan 28, 2009 2:04 PM EST up reply actions

I watched the fight and the so called ‘illegal knee’ barely grazed him. He was on his way back to his feet when it happened so it was borderline illegal. Bottomline is, you are in a fight. Sometimes shite happens and if you have any heart then you roll with it. If you cant take it then you are in the wrong business so get the fuck out. Varner had nothing left in the tank and he pussied out. He certainly didnt fight like a champion and doesnt deserve the belt. Look at the beating Cerrone was taking for the first few rounds, you dont hear him crying.

by mike on Jan 28, 2009 2:59 PM EST up reply actions

I can agree with both sides of the arguement, with the fighting through broken limbs (is awesome), to the knee that was illegal (barely, but illegal).
All I have to say is what would a Pride referee have done?? Nothing. Guys in Pride took knees (and kicks) to the face when they were downed in every fight, but strangely none of them experienced blindness.

lol OK I’m sure that these douchbags calling professional fighters losers and pussies are 260lb lard a$$ keyboard warriors who have never trained a day in their lives. You kids are pathetic, step into the ring and let one of the best fighters in the world knee you in the temple illegally and when you wake up from your coma you can see if you want to keep talking sh!t, tough guys.

I’m sure you guys would talk that sh!t to his face by the way. You’d be quivering, afraid to make eye contact calling him “mister varner” and telling him what an amazing fight it was. I guess being completely anonymous can really make people brave.

fighting through broken limbs-if he’s telling the truth- is pretty dang crazy. but that knee when cerrone threw it was legal and varner was going for a take down in the middle of it and it barely grazed him; saying your going blind when your opponents eyes are almost swollen shut is crap, come up with a better excuse next time. once again, if he is telling the truth which im not so sure about, just ignore what i wrote

If the knee was what ended it then that is fine but the other injuries are a result of the fight and if you stop fighting because of those then it is called being unable to continue and is therefore a loss.

by RyanHobbs on Jan 28, 2009 2:19 PM EST up reply actions

Great point. My biggest issue was that he immediately started talking about breaking his hand after the fight. That made it sound like he was just looking for a way out and was using the illegal knee as an excuse.

All that stuff is well and good, but he supposedly quit because of an illegal blow. If you get your bones broken in the fight, then you either lose by tko or keep fighting.

He’s just proving to everyone that he quit because he thought thought he would get finished or decisioned by Cerrone if he kept fighting.

by Dom on Jan 28, 2009 8:58 PM EST up reply actions

Varner took the easy way out of a fight. Whether or not he had injuries, the knee is not what hurt him, so he shouldn’t have used that as an excuse to end the fight.

Rewatching it, it’s almost as if he knew the knee was coming and started moving back towards the mat in order to find a way out.

As a fighter, that doesn’t make him feel like a champion.

by 45 Huddle on Jan 28, 2009 1:14 PM EST reply actions

Tough guy’s around here…sitting behind your key board doing the 9 to 5 and probably 50 lbs over weight. 90% of all of you have NO…NO clue what fights do. You’re as bad as Mike Vick or some hillbilly wanting there rooster to fight tell he dies. A broken hand AND FOOT, and still went on. The man was struck in the temple and could not see. Lay off him you #$@’s

I agreewith you 100%

by Kit on Jan 28, 2009 1:32 PM EST up reply actions

I give Varner all the credit in the world for fighting with a broken hand and foot. That takes guts, heart, balls, and toughness. But I think he pushed the panic button in the fifth round and found a way out of the fight. The guy’s a warrior, but the knee didn’t appear to be all that bad and I’ve seen fighters continue after taking far worse illegal strikes. But I can’t guage the full effects of the knee from just watching it. Varner is the only one who can judge whether or not he can continue. However, the way it appeared, was that Varner was hurting badly from the hand and foot and found a way out of the fight. I see what you’re saying 45 Huddle he was comming up and came back down into the knee. I don’t know if it was intentional or if he saw the knee and tried to go for a takedown. Either way though Varner deserves credit for fighting in the kind of condition he was in, but I think he wanted to find a way out of that fight. And who can blame him? Fighting hurt is one of the toughest things to do. I’ve competed in wrestling and jiu-jitsu hurt and it sucks. I can’t immagine how hard fighting with a broken hand and foot must be.

by DB on Jan 28, 2009 1:37 PM EST up reply actions

I also think Varner is doing an inordinant amount of crying. If you fight hurt you fight hurt. Don’t use it as an excuse.

It is heroic if you fight on and it is later revealed that you did so despite your injuries. It is cowardly to look for an escape because of those injuries and still claim victory. There is no glory in your story Varner. You should have “cowboy-ed up” as they say.

by MrFyer on Jan 28, 2009 6:16 PM EST up reply actions

The Cowboy is most likely doing a light trianing session today.. all in all.. I respect MMA.. Irespect MMA fighers.. but when you are crowned a Champion.. you have to uphold the honor.. and raise the bar for yourself and your peers.

On medical bills thing.. I know the ufc when a fighter gets hurt in the Octagon. the UFC covers everything straight thru rehab.. so if Zuffa owns both UFC and WEc.. I would assume WEc would do the same.

That fight between Varner and Cerrone was insane.. it was a grueling back and forth battle.. like most of us.. we saw Varner ahead going straight thru round 5. It was such a good fight.. up until that slight Knee graze.. slight.. caused Varner to say .. No Mas!

Oh man.. I was tight.. Varner your a Champion..but that was a chump move.. and he put more his foot in his mouth.. in his post fight comments.. he said waaaaayyyy to quick about his broken hand.. the fight was not stopped cuz of his hand or his foot.. it was stopped because he had 3 points on the ground.. and Cerrone let off a knee.

In this fight weven though Varner won all the rounds.. round 5 was not going to go the same way.. now it’s more speculation.. cuz the fight ws stopped too early.. but the Cowboy.. was raising the bar for himself and for his opponent..and Varner IMO know he gave all he had.. and was not able to or willing to coast till the bell rang.. so he opted out.. made an excuse.. added another excuse to the excuse.. and that my fellow maniacs is Bunz!

by PhilQNY on Jan 28, 2009 1:30 PM EST up reply actions

Phil..my man. I agree with you almost 100%…The only thing I question is the reasoning behind Varner telling everybody about his hand after the fight. Its possible he figured he needed to explain himself more to the crowd after the boos? honestly I don’t know.
I’m a fighter, and the last thing I would do is disrespect my opponent like that and myself. He made himself look worse in the eyes of the mma community. ..but Phil basically nailed it.

by john on Jan 28, 2009 5:45 PM EST up reply actions

not that it really counts for anything, but the two of them share two common opponents, Maia and Franklin. Jason McDonald did better against both of them. that matchup is going to come down whether or not McDonald can get the take down. Quarry has a decided andvantage on the feet as does McDonald on the ground.

I agree with you James. It’s not so much about what did or not happen in the cage on Sunday night, it’s the antics of Varner afterwards. This guy is an emotional toddler. You would think being a professional MMA fighter you can expect injuries, adversity, and unfair things like booing from the uneducated fans. Yet Varner still finds a way to react like an adolescent and says “Yea fu&%!ng boo me”.

He should no better than to expect anything more from the average MMA fans and he should also know how to man up and act like a professional after going through something like this. Somebody needs to tell him that he doesn’t owe an explanation to anybody, just let it go dude and stop running your mouth. People will respect you more in the long run if you don’t whine and bitch about bs.

Also, good comment by James S. I don’t mind Varner but he’s been non-stop about this lately. All of this can be settled in a rematch. If he ducks Cerrone in a rematch, then he sucks. Until then, the fight ended less than favorably but what can you do? Only Varner got hit with the knee so only he knows 100% if he was faking or not.

Not long ago Varner was bitching about Frank Mirs commentary during the fight, and he claimed that it was one sided… It was not. But Mir was thorougly impressed with Carrone – his heart his toughness, and his skills. When Varner is complaining about the medical bills and the injuries sustained during the fight, he undermines his own critique of Mir, not to forget that Varner is fueling the claims that he caved in after that knee gave him an easy way out.

I loved the fight, and I hope they’ll go at it again. Too bad that Varner feels he has to justify his actions in the ring, because he had nothing to be ashamed of. Varner gave Carrone everything he had, and the crowd loved Carrone for it. Varner was winning the fight, as Carrone went on to win the crowds hearts. Varone got booed because his heart was compared with the man he had given a beating all night. That’s why he fell short.

I surely hope Varner finds tranquility. He deserves it just as much as Carrone deserves a rematch.

"My medical bills are going to be way more than what I made in this fight".

What the hell is he talking about? The WEC foots the bill for all medical expenses for injuries incurred in the cage. This was a sanctioned event held in the state of Nevada under the rules and regulations of the NSAC. Part of the regulation process is that the promoter provides medical coverage/insurance.
He’s just talking out of his ass now. The only thing he’ll be spending a lot of money on is Massingill and Summers Eve to clean out that gaping vag of his.

by Psyqo78®™ on Jan 28, 2009 7:30 PM EST up reply actions

I think it is absolutely ridiculous that people are bashing Jamie Varner for b*tching out of the fight. He got kneed in the head and could not see. It is not like the judges gave him round 5 costing Cowboy the victory. All 3 judges gave the round to Cowboy forcing the split decision. If anything it was more detrimental to Varner because he almost lost a split decision cause of the illegal knee. He did have a solid ground and pound (which is supprising if Cerrone trained with GSP and probably got the crap beat out of him in Montreal) but Cerrone did a lot off his back and had cage control as he stalked Varner throughout the octagon.

If anything people should be happy with a hard fought, great fight on both ends and stop bitching about an illegal hit that most people here would be knocked out from.

Last point, I thought the class that both fighters displayed at the beginning of each round was extremely important for the fight game from political standpoint (I am from NYC) and if more fighters displayed similar class, our stupid/hippie legislators would have no problem approving the bill to bring MMA to MSG.

So quit calling the guy a puss when 90% of you wouldn’t have the balls to get into the cage and do what he did. And don’t retort with ‘hell ya I would get in there"; just because you’ve been in a couple of street fights and may have won doesn’t put you on the level of toughness that these guys are on.

Easy big fella, he is a professional & if he is going to piss and moan then he will be subject to a little heckling here and there.

PS: I could take him…….lol!!!!!!!

hell ya I would get in there.

I’ve never been in a fight before, I just enjoy reading books and playing on my computer.

by Bennie on Jan 28, 2009 7:37 PM EST up reply actions

DUDE….

You miss the point. He should of quit, he broke two bones and didn’t want to fight because of pain. Understandable but he shouldn’t win after quitting. He is lucky that they allowed the fight to stop because he probably would of lost due to lack of will to continue.

Jamie’s internal dialogue?

(man, I can see perfectly)

Doctor: Do you want to continue?

Jamie: Yeah…

Doctor: If you are unfit to continue we can go to the scorecards

Jamie: Really…. (oh man, I can’t fight anymore) AHHHH my eye, I’m blind, I’m blind.

Doctor: He can’t see, we must stop

I think if that exact same blow that grazed him were legal I don’t think Varner would have given up and got tko’d. I think he just knew he didnt have to continue so he didnt.

EXACTLY.

by Bennie on Jan 28, 2009 7:36 PM EST up reply actions

He didn’t stop the fight. The doctor stopped the fight. He’s not whining, he’s explaining. Granted, he’s quite exasperated while he’s doing it. It’s him responding to the very harsh and clear criticism of his performance in the fifth round. How many men here are physics majors? Who here knows the force exerted upon Varner’s eye socket? I don’t know these things myself. But, when a successful fighter is unable to follow a doctor’s eye accuracy test, and has stated, “I cannot see,” is not allowed to fight, I’m glad. It’s not a fight at that point. Had the knee been legal, the fight would have been stopped and Cerrone declared the champion. But, it wasn’t. It was illegal. Cerrone knew he lost the fight, this is made clear by his reaction to the judge who scored the fight for him. So, in my mind, it makes no sense to lash out against Varner, as he continued on when he was injured for one and a half rounds. Both his hand and feet were broken in the third round, it is said. If he was going to, “Puss out,” He would have done it earlier. He would have given up. He didn’t do that. He kept fighting. Then an illegal move took place, that damaged his eye. In which case, the doctor stopped the fight. It’s that simple.

Well Varner has one fan left name Falufalump.

by MrFyer on Jan 28, 2009 6:25 PM EST up reply actions

NOPE.

He lucked out that he had an illegal blow on him. He could of continued. He has been hit with much worse knees.

He can see fine, just watch him next fight. I’ve seen about 50 knees worse than that in the last year.

Varner = on his way to a 5th round defet.

Varner = lucky guy

Varner = will lose next time

ok you idiot, the doctor stopped the fight because Jamie was being a little whiny girl. He would have let him continue if he wasnt crying like an 8 yr old girl at the toy store

by TheElementofOne on Jan 29, 2009 6:20 AM EST up reply actions

He should of finished the fight.

He could see, he just didn’t want to fight because of the broken bones.

Understandable, don’t get me wrong, but he should of lost the fight.

Tired of hearing this bitch whine! Put his ass in the UFC and then he’ll really have something to cry about…

by PACO on Jan 28, 2009 7:49 PM EST reply actions

There is a reason why there are 5 rounds. If you cant make it you lose.

Varner = physical beast = emotional midget

by TapedUpPair on Jan 28, 2009 7:50 PM EST reply actions

dude….is this guy still bitchin???? Let it go Varner!!! Your making yourself to be a whiny whore…Now I really wish Cerrone won.

by skelow on Jan 28, 2009 8:03 PM EST reply actions

tapeduppair nailed it.
this guy really needs to shut up. he had a good fight for 4.5 rounds. people are upset that he pussied out after a knee that grazed him. yea breaking bones hurts and it wouldnt be easy to continue but all he had left was half a round. he knew he was in trouble and saw a way out and took it. anyone that disagrees with that obviously has a man crush on varner.

Heres the thing, the first thing Jamie cried about in the post fight interview was his hand being broken. Why didnt he say “my head hurts” or “i cant see.” He never once mentioned the knee. He was obviously being a coward and taking the easy way out. He knew he was gassed and didnt want to get choked or gas’d out. He alse reacted to the crowd like a little girl. When he heard boo’ing, he should have just apologized and promised a rematch, instead, he got mad and swore at his fans. He doesnt have the heart of a champion. He simply took the easy way out to keep his belt. I cant wait for the rematch. Cerrone deserves the title, he fought like a warrior and kept pressing despite getting his face pounded in. Jamie in my book is a poor excuse for a champ and needs to be put in his place. Jamie, your a pussy

by TheElementofOne on Jan 29, 2009 6:18 AM EST reply actions

All of you talking sh@# about Jamie, I would love to see you say these things to his face. Everyone one of you would fold like a folder chair and would probably completely change you tone if you were looking him straight in the eye. “Hey Jamie, I’m a big fan, great fight, you’re a real bad ass fighting with a broken hand and foot” as you stand there in your size medium Affliction or Tap-Out shirt.

by Jason on Jan 29, 2009 9:07 AM EST reply actions

Varner definitely was looking for a way out of the fight and when that illegal knee grazed him, he jumped all over it. He ain’t no champion. After hearing how be broke this and that during the fight, I am even more convinced that he pussed out. Too bad WEC doesn’t have more talent in the lightweight division as UFC does. 75% of UFC’s lightweight division would own him.
I guess that’s good for him cause otherwise, he would not be lightweight champion of WEC.

by anom on Jan 29, 2009 12:56 PM EST reply actions

that knee wouldve changed the whole fight around if he chose to continue. chances are cerrone wouldve capitalized on it; he was getting more aggressive at the last round and it was already scored as a close fight. if cerrone wouldnt have knocked him out he wouldve probably been able to win that round to take home the belt.

if you were a champion would you want to lose the belt on account of eating an illegal blow?

it hurt, im sure it did. but varner did jump on the opportunity to keep his belt within wec ruling. this ISNT pride so dont compare it. hes a WEC champion and won his belt within wec ruling, not pride.
