Nate Quarry vs Jason MacDonald on tap for UFC 97 in Montreal
Jason MacDonald (21-11) will celebrate his tenth appearance inside the Octagon in front of a hometown crowd at UFC 97 from The Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on April 18, taking on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) alum Nate Quarry (10-3) in a middleweight bout.
MMAmania.com today confirmed that "The Athlete" has been added to the card. He joins a bevvy of Canadian talent set to compete during the second-ever show for the promotion to take place north of the United States border.
MacDonald has had a roller coaster ride during his UFC tenure. He has compiled a winning record (5-4); however, he has struggled against several of the top fighters the division has to offer -- Rich Franklin, Yushin Okami, Wilson Gouveia and Demian Maia are notable losses.
He was most recently overwhelmed by the vicious ground and pound of Gouveia at TUF 8 Finale back in December. The American Top Team (ATT) powerhouse smashed MacDonald with brutal elbows, forcing him to tap little more than two minutes into round one.
MacDonald has been unable to gain any traction in the 185-pound division since bursting onto the scene in 2006 with back-to-back submission wins over Ed Herman and Chris Leben. If recent trends are any indication, MacDonald is poised for victory over "The Rock;" however, it won't come easy.
Quarry will return to the scene of the crime in what was one of the most bizarre fights ever against Kalib Starnes back at UFC 83: "St. Pierre vs. Serra 2" in April 2008. He essentially chased the Surrey, British Columbia, native for a majority of the 15-minute bout. Starnes simply refused to engage. It was such a joke that Quarry mocked him inside the Octagon toward the tail end of the fight for playing keep-a-away.
The Starnes fight was just his second after a nearly two-year break from competition to recover from a serious injury that required "spinal fusion" surgery to repair. He stopped Pete Sell via come from behind third round knockout in his return fight. He was then submitted by Maia in short order at UFC 91: "Couture vs. Lesnar" in November 2008.
It's once again a contrast in styles -- MacDonald has some tricky submissions. Of course, his Brazilian jiu-jitsu skills are not on par with a decorated grappler such as Maia, but Quarry -- a heavy-handed power-puncher by trade -- will have to be careful nonetheless.

Quarry is going to get owned… he looked HORRIBLE against maia who is a submission guy, if i remember he didnt even make it past the 2 min. mark… and macdonalds biggest strength are his subs!

MacDonald got submitted by Maia as well. I know it took a lot longer, but just because submissions are MacDonald’s strength doesn’t mean he’ll be able to sub Quarry. Nate has good takedown defense and I don’t see J-Mac pulling guard to get it to the ground like Maia did. Tough fight to call, but MacDonald’s stand up is mediocre at best, so I like Quarry by TKO.

Nate is the tougher man and the btter wrestler. I think Nate keeps this fight standing unless J-mac decide to poull guard, and I do not see that happening. Quarry via TKO

Rock by TKO or submission to strikes. MacDonald is a little bitch. Quitter!!!

You can’t even compare Maia and McDonald’s ground games. Maia probably has the best sub game in MMA. McDonald, although yes, subs they are his strength, can’t compete with Maia.

You didn’t miss much. It was really an uneventful ending to the build up to the event. Very disappointed w/ these UFC Primetime shows. I was so amped when I first caught word of it. So disappointing.

I like the match-up. Both guys are coming off lopsided losses and need a win. Nate’s got good takedown defense and if he can keep it on the feet he has a big advantage over MacDonald.

I’m going to UFC 97. I hope to see Quarry fight this time. He came to Montreal last year and chased Starnes around the ring for 15 minutes. I think MacDonald takes this by submission.

Psh! Quarry by TKO. Imma huge believer that the Jackson camp is gonna takeover the MMA world by storm (with the exception of the Cerrone fight, in which I still think he had somewhat of chance to land a submission quick) but yea, training with Rashad, GSP, etc. I think Quarry has this fight locked.

these are two of my favorite fighters, not the best but likable, and i think this is a hard one to call. i think i see it hitting the ground and jmac doing work on the ground.

My prediction is that Nate Quarry will continue to demonstrate the most awkward stand up in MMA.

great match up! this should really be a good fight that wont get a lot of attention unfortunatly. Jmac always comes in shape and if he gets set up on the ground he’ll win. Because of Quarry’s terrible ground game i’m going with Jmac by sub round 2.

I was impressed by Jason in his fight against Maia. He did pretty well considering he was playing Jits with one of the best. I will be rooting for him in this battle. Nate is one tough mofo, with good takedown defense, but he seems a bit slow since his return. Pete Sell was lighting him up until that 3rd round knockout
