Gary Shaw: Benedict De La Hoya slapped boxing in the face with allegiance to 'haters'

Props: ESPN.com

"Oscar is not into MMA. He can't sit there and tell you anything about the moves or strategies that these guys are using. Oscar is not into MMA, and the people who are in MMA are haters. They will never accept him. Oscar won't be able to overcome that. How could you not attend a fight that involves a boxer who is a partner in your company in a sold-out arena where they have a statue of you out front? That's a slap in the face to boxing."

– Former Elite XC Live Events President Gary Shaw shares his thoughts on the recent partnership between Affliction MMA and Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, specifically De La Hoya's decision to attend "Day of Reckoning" on January 24 instead of the WBA welterweight title fight between Shane Mosely and Antonio Margarito at the nearby Staples Center. Shaw has been a part of both sports at the highest level and perhaps he knows what he’s talking about. Or maybe he’s just bitter about his lack of success in mixed martial arts and doesn’t want to see other people succeed where he did not. Hi hater.

Why won’t Gary Shaw just go away. Plus when have MMA fans ever embraced an “outsider”. We’re notorous for rejecting people who come into this sport with the intention of making money, but have no background or knowledge about it.

Fatty needs to F*CK OFF for good. Noone cares what he thinks. The fact that Oscar showed an interest in being at the Affliction card is good and if he became more of a fan by doing so then even better.

The fact that he is currently competing at the top level in boxing means he has more knowledge about combat sports than the useless walrus pictured above. He just has sour grapes cos he is collecting his Elite XC pension and will never be associated with MMA again.

Besides Oscar doen’t really need to know the finer points as Affliction deals with all the matchmaking etc. Saying that he looked really impressed when Fedor dropped Andrei!!

by Ca$z on Jan 28, 2009 11:49 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

agreed. i wish oscar would slap shaw across the face. his intentions for the sport are much more honorable than shaws. oscar was giving props to mma when shaw was calling it “just a fad”.

Damn right we’re haters against fat boxing f%cks trying to rigg fights. Nick – if you saw the trailer to “the shaws” reality show then you’d have been cruely subjected to the sight of a shirtless gary. God do regret watching that.

Get F*CKED Gary Shaw!
Your very name is synonymous for all that is wrong with the MMA industry. Do yourself a favour, go enter a hot dog eating contest (you will easily come first, second AND third), then go fuck yourself sideways with a blowtorch you piece of shit.

God I hate Gary Shaw.

Wasn’t this fat fuck an outsider to MMA? Was he such an insider of MMA that he knew how to run a prosperous MMA promotion? Both Gary ‘Grimmace’ Shaw and Jared ‘Pretty Fly for a White Guy’ Shaw are both slaps to the face of the human race. Jared reminds me of the white kid in “Gran Torino” that doesn’t stick up for little asian girl and that Clint Eastwood calls a pussy.

gary shawran a company into the ground multiple times and oscar de la hoya is half a billionaire! oscar de la hoya is just the head of the company he isnt the whole company. he is partnered with shane mosely and bernard hopkins and hopkins was at the event with shane as you could see in the post fight interview in the ring and oscar was taking care of the new venture with affliction/golden boy..you only get one chance to make a 1st impression and this is obviously why oscar was at the 1st event since partnering up with affliction!! get over it gary…

can’t say I disagree, just look how disinterested Oscar is after the fight getting a picture with Fedor. Was that promo for a Gary Shaw reality series real or a goof?

I am not sure if it was real. I heard some of Skalas music though. Pretty terrible. Even my girlfriend didn’t like it and she loves terrible music.

Gary Shaw is a fat, disgusting sack of crap.

Sounds like he is a bit jealous that he didn’t pick up a chunk of that 5 million that Affliction paid to rent Oscar that night.

Dude, if BJ was fighting Fedor I would pick BJ. He is the man and always will be.

And via what and when?

by ( (Adam G) ) on Jan 28, 2009 12:39 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Adam G : I’m a big fan of both fighters.. both fighter’s are MMA hall of famer’s in my book.

I give GSP the nod in this match up.

GSP’s Size will be the difference.

GSP is a real big Welter Weight. Even if BJ comes in shape it’s not going to be the same. 155 shape he came into when he fought Joe and Sean.. This fight with all due respect can go either way.. but something in my gut tells me GSP will win.

I’m not on team GSP or Team Penn.. I’m team Mania(PQNY)

the only advantege BJ has .. is in the boxing realm.

the only way I see BJ winning is if he puts GSP on his back. which up onto the time he fought Fitch out of his whole MMA career GSP has only spent 4 MINUTES on his back.. which is insane.

I feel GSP will grind BJ out.. take him down.. nullify his jits.. press him up against the cage.. and go to work.. I see a late 2nd round or even 3rd round stoppage in the favor for GSP.

If BJ can clip GSP cut him hurt him.. get his back.. it’s a wrap for GSP. a la Penn vs Hughes part1.

I think the size is the key factor in this match up.

I’ve seen and been on the mat with GSP.. he is a REAL big dude.. especially for his weight class.

Now even though GSP won a spit decision awhile back against BJ.. both fighter’s are much improved.

If I where to bet money.. I would bet it on GSP. I don’t see BJ taking GSP down at all.. BJ can prove me wrong and has what it takes.. but this is how I see it.

by PhilQNY on Jan 28, 2009 12:52 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I see Bj winnig via armbar in the third. I like GSP, but I don’t think he will be able hang with an inshape and focused BJ. Penn put it best, martial arts is about technique, not size and strength.

god, gary shaw is a piece of work. now that his own dip into mma promotion failed (miserably), he’s calling mma folk “haters.” he’s an idiot.

shaw, just get kimbo in the boxing ring so he gets knocke out, and shut the hell up.

by B_Hos on Jan 28, 2009 11:34 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

As a boxing fan and an MMA fan I can confirm the obvious :

Oscar D stopped caring about boxing a long time ago. He is the A-Rod of boxing, talented and 100% fake. He is jumping into the MMA pool for profit, pure and simple. Shaw is right to that extent… But in this case its the pot calling the kettle black!!!

by OJR on Jan 28, 2009 11:35 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

if oscar wants to make a profit in mma, then affliction better start making some money! ;)

“Shaw, who has promoted both sports and enjoys promoting MMA more, said De La Hoya shouldn’t count on it. “MMA is a closed community. It’s like a cult,” Shaw said. “People in boxing are willing to accept people from outside of the sport. People in MMA are haters. They will never accept someone who is not totally into their sport.”"

WTF is he talking about? If anything I feel boxing is the cult not letting MMA ppl in.

I hate this guy

by Fokman on Jan 28, 2009 11:37 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

You’re right. The only people talking crap are the boxing people.

by c-war on Jan 28, 2009 12:11 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Not true. Young heads like me like both sports. Its the old, old heads that hate on MMA and talk crap.

Also, I know alot of MMA fans who talk crap about boxing but then get sensitive when boxing fans come back at them.

Its a never-ending circle.

Can’t we all just love each other? :)

by OJR on Jan 28, 2009 2:31 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

OJR. i still like both. i grew up watching boxing, i bought every Ring and KO magazine i could as a kid( this was before there was mma or the internet.) i think mma has kinda forced boxing to put on even more great matches than ever. yes there are some incredibly boring boxing matches, but over the last 5 years there have been some all-time classics, too many to name. i feel sorry for people who dont like both, less fights for them to watch. oh well as long as they love mma, they are alright in my book. :)

I dont know what Gary Shaw is tlaking about, he says De la hoya isnt interested in mma. Ive been to six ufc events and he has been at every one of them, people at home dont know this because zuffa dosent have the cammera on him all the damn time because frankly theres some more interesting people there, and they dont have to fill a time slot because they broadcast more then three fights.

Oh and Kimbo Slice is a piece of shit fighter, that why Danna said if he wants to be in the ufc he would have to compete on the ultimite fighter, i thought that was hilarious, that and when Petruzelli knocked him out in 14 seconds. The WEC was a fucking joke!!

shaw is a hypocrite…dela hoya’s doing what he did with elitex and now his pissed because dela hoya might actually have a sucessful mma promotion….
the reason dela hoya was not at mosleys fight at staples(aside from being partners with affliction) is that—he knows he would get boooeed by mexican and mexican american fans there..who were the majority in attendance..because he was beat up by a much much smaller pacquiao and he QUIT!! unlike mexican greats morales and julio cesar they fight to the end..
