WEC 39 welterweight championship bout cancelled due to injury to Condit; possibly Larson (Updated)

WEC welterweight champion Carlos Condit (22-4) has suffered a hand and wrist injury and was forced to withdraw from his bout against number one contender Brock Larson at WEC 39 on March 1 as reported on the WEC official website.
In addition, Five Ounces of Pain is reporting that Larson is also injured, prompting Zuffa to consider scrapping the weight class altogether rather than find a replacement bout, effectively sending Condit, Larson and a host of other 170-pounders to the land of the UFC.
The report also puts "The Natural Born Killer" at UFC Fight Night 18 against Martin Kampmann on April 1.
The potential dissolution of the welterweight division wouldn't come as much of a surprise, considering the organization has already made plans to dispose of the light heavyweight and middleweight divisions. If and when it were to happen, all that would remain in the WEC are the lightweight, featherweight and bantamweight classes.
It helps that Condit has essentially cleared out the 170-pound division, including a previous submission win over Larson back in August of 2007. In fact it's a move that Condit himself predicted following the Miura fight:
"If I fight those [UFC] guys, it will be as the WEC champion…. There are a lot of tough guys – a lot of them, believe me – but you just have to fight whoever they tell you to fight. I’m proud to be the WEC champion and whoever I fight, whenever I fight, wherever I fight, I’ll do it as the WEC champion."
Condit has bested several tough opponents throughout his six-year professional mixed martial arts career, including Frank Trigg, Carlo Prater, Renato Verissimo, John Alessio and many others. The 24-year-old fighter out of Albuquerque, New Mexico, is widely considered to be among the top welterweights in the world and has not dropped a bout in more than two years.
His last fight came at WEC 35 against Hiromitsu Miura back in August. Condit successfully defended his title with a fourth round technical knockout in what was widely considered one of the best fights of 2008.
Condit would have his work cut out for him against the new-look Kampmann, and if he manages to best "The Hitman," there awaits a plethora of experienced welterweights that would love nothing more than to spoil his quest for UFC gold.
Whatever the outcome, it certainly would be fun to watch.

I got Martin. Also found it strange because weekly is reporting that there was no injury. They just decided to cancel it which gives more proof of the dissolution of the division.

Thats what i read on weekly and another site, either way i think it will get merged, there really arent that many fighters in the WW in wec. Should be a good fight but i got to go with my boy kampmann but i do really like the natural born killer

Kampmann will win but I’m glad this is happening.
Hopefully we see Hazelett v Villefort now

that would be a phenomenal jits fight. too bad for that campbell kid, he showed some promise but won’t have the WEC to get seasoned any longer. i’d imagine he won’t be coming for the ride

All they need now is Jake Shields and the WW division will be ridiculously stacked!!!!!

Mania had left off that Carlos Condit has also fought Jake Shields, and lost a decision.

glad he’s comin over, and larson too, but kampmann wins in destructive fashion. Condit is a skinny guy with not much strength. He gassed against Miura. How is he gonna handle the strength of kampmann who’s fought tough guys at 185. Kampmanns striking is far more crisp. Condit could pull guard and maybe sink in a triangle, but aside from that i got kampmann steamrollin this kid. Too bad cuz he’s got a bright future. needs to go the route of kenny florian and start building muscle. tough first UFC fight. guess that’s how it works when u come in as a champion
by Crowls on Jan 28, 2009 2:58 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
really? that surprises me. though if there going to scrap the devision its not srprising that larson is unmotivated

Not only should they have done this a long time ago they should also look at building up the lighter divisions as well as there just isnt enough potential good matchups.
Example, seeing Pulver vs Faber 2 just didn’t make sense seeing as they fought each other 2 fights ago and was only because the ratings were so good for the first one.

Well, it’s about time Condit gets to test his skills in the UFC. Now we’ll see if he’s all talk or if he can really hang with the big boys. Good luck to him!

The Hit Man is gonna whoop condits puney ass!
by Griffinfan05 on Jan 27, 2009 10:58 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Puny as in small and weak, not able to hold his own in fight right? yeah i dont think a puny person would be able to hold wins against so many tough opponents….not A+ class fighters for sure but tough competition.

The WEC is a farm league for the UFC. Condit is in for a rude awakening.

condit will get thrown around in the UFC welterweight division. He’s good, but he still has the physique of a 13 year boy… He will need to develop his strength more and work on his cardio before he could ever consider becoming a force in the 170lb division. He’s just 24 though and has plenty of time to develop in the UFC.

good point, i hadnt really thought of that, he may have to work on his cardio less than you think though. sure he gassed in the last fight but that was an all out war and he still pulled it off. but your absoltely right about the strength

Beat Frank Trigg who is a pretty strong guy and a damn good wrestler!
Dont forget this kid can hold his won standing with just about anyone. His Muy Tai is brutal. He reminds me of a bigger Kenny Florian~!
I would love to see him fight guys like:
Marcus Davis
Lytle
Hazlett
Dan Hardy

According the WEC’s own site, Condit was the one who got injured so the chances of this happening are zero. Also why would the UFC decide to scrap an entire division because a contender got hurt i’m sure there will be plenty of takers who would love a shot somebody must have gotten some bad info on this.

I also doubt that they would scrap their entire WW division because a contender got hurt there are plenty of guys who would love a shot at Condit’s belt. Somebody must have gotten some wrong info for this story to leak out and not be close to the mark at all.

I can see Condit getting a very risky takedown early, and then Kampman muscling to the feet, feeling looser, then BAM, headkick!

Kampmann will get a TKO for sure in this fight.
