WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner suffers broken hand and broken foot in round three of WEC 38 'Varner vs. Cerrone'

Fresh off his war with Donald Cerrone at WEC 38 'Varner vs. Cerrone,' WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner will be tonight's guest on MMAmania.com's exclusive presentation of Pro MMA Radio.

Varner took a split-decision victory from "Cowboy" in an action-packed battle that saw "C-4" break his left hand and right foot in round three of their scrap. Varner confirmed the injuries earlier today with Pro MMA Radio host Larry Pepe.

Despite the split-decision, it's not a stretch to suggest that Varner was on his way to a clear-cut victory before an unintentional (but illegal) knee felled him midway through the fifth. Varner opted not to continue after having difficulty seeing, providing a disappointing ending to a fantastic fight.

Tonight's show will have Jamie's reaction to the judges scorecards, his opinion on the commentating of Frank Mir, the toughness of Donald Cerrone and of course his decision to not continue after the illegal knee.

If that's not enough, none other than Nostradumbass himself, MMAmania.com Editor and Senior Writer Jesse Holland will swoop in from his perch on Mt. Pompous to give you more 'expert' analysis than you can shake a shtick at.

Joining my nasally diatribe will be John Anik from ESPN's MMA Live as he attempts to wade through the digital filth I leave behind and provide his own interpretation of the impact from last weekend's 'Day of Reckoning' and WEC 38 events and also preview this Saturday's colossal clash at UFC 94 'St. Pierre vs. Penn 2'.

Hosted by Larry Pepe, Pro MMA Radio is professional, guest-driven program that features some of mixed martial arts biggest names.

If you’re looking for a radio show that revolves around a couple of MMA fans ranting and raving about everything that’s already been covered ad nauseam, then Pro MMA Radio probably isn’t for you.

However, if you want to hear from actual fighters and industry insiders answering questions that are relevant to the current MMA scene, tune in every Monday night at 9pm ET for our exclusive live feed.

See you tonight at 9pm!

It going to be an excuse-fest!

With a broken foot and a broken hand its no wonder that he “couldn’t see”.

He simply needed a way out of the fight.

Cowboy was 100% correct on Pro MMA Radio when he said that Varner quits when puahed. When he fought McCullugh, Drew Fickett said that he heard Varner say that he didnt’ even want to continue the fight – AND he was winning.

Varner is talented, there is no denying that. But with this attitude, he is quickly going to be in the same category as the other talkers like Tito and KJ Noons.

C’mon Jamie, you are better than them, or so I thought…

by ViolentMike on Jan 26, 2009 4:57 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah it’s kind of weird. Varner put a serious beating on Cerrone for most of that fight but took quite a few shots himself. He was winning the fight and there wasn’t much time left so it wasn’t like he needed to find a way out. Both guys were pretty gassed and the chances of anyone finishing that fight were pretty slim.

I gotta say though when he saw his opportunity he took it and I just can’t figure out why. Cerrone couldn’t see for half that fight. I was actually worried they were gonna stop the fight after the second round because of the cuts to Cerrone but they weren’t as bad as they seemed at first.

All in all a great fight for 4 1/2 rounds. Truly a classic in the making prior to the stoppage.

I hate to say it but Varner quit. Lame!

By the way, I looked at it about 20 times and Varner was on his feet and nothing else when the strike hit so technically Cerrone should have won by TKO.

by DDT on Jan 26, 2009 5:09 PM EST up reply actions

His crying “I’m sorry man, I’m sorry” was about the lamest thing I’ve ever seen post fight. Other than the end of the last fight it was a pretty sweet night of fights. Way better than Affliction.

by DDT on Jan 26, 2009 5:14 PM EST up reply actions

Way better than just about any MMA event. These WEC events don’t have the same intrigue and the match-ups aren’t as exciting but the actual fights themselves are far and away, the most skillful in the sport.

Completely agree. I was rooting for Cowboy. Young kid that I saw on “Tap-out” about a year ago. Varner wimped out, what a CHUMP.

there shouldn’t be any excuses if Jamie Varner beats his opponents like he beats his women. This guy’s real name is Mike ______ and he like’s to take out his anger on women. Specifically knocking out a former girlfriend in a Texas hotel room, leaving her there bloodied and battered for the maid service to find her unconcious in the bathroom. All the while, he is running back to AZ. This guy is a POS. He doesn’t deserve to be aloud to fight at the Professional level. He’s not a pro, he’s a loser. This wasn’t the first time he has done this. This fighter has beaten several women in the past, unfortunately they are as talented as his ring opponents. He deserves to be in jail, then we can see how much he wants to fight when BUBBA grabs him by the neck and turns him into a girl. F U Mike, you deserve the worst.

LIsten up boys! I just watched Dana whites video blog #1 for this weekes UFC BJ vs. GSP and its a great blog!

The blog was done at last nights wec event. The whole blog consists of Dana hanging around back stage and asking all the fighters for their prediction of the GSP vs. BJ Penn fight! Let me tell you, mOST FIGHTERS think BJ is going to win the fight.

Caol Uno and Robbie Lawler both predicted BJ Penn via 2nd round KO!
Faber: BJ Penn
Jens Pulver and all his trainers: BJ
Varner: bj

Mike Brown: GSP

Most interesting part of the blog was at the end…Dana was Chillin wit Kid Yammamotto. Dana asked him: Are you ready to come fight here, we want you". Kid said he is ready. Lets hope they get the deal done!

Btw, Kid also predicted BJ Penn!

Varner is a douche! I truly believe that Cerrone was going to finish him in the final round, and garner knew it~! Not only that, I re-watched it 3 times, the knee was close! he was up, then back down! I won’t listen to the radio show, but I hope someone asks a real question like: why did you say you can’t see and puss out? you obviously were winning, and Cerrone’s eyes were swelling shut, yet he kept backing you down…oh and what’s with the gay ass hug?

by kevin on Jan 26, 2009 4:01 PM EST reply actions

To me it didn’t look like he connected with the knee to the eye so I am really not sure why he couldn’t see.

by JSP on Jan 26, 2009 4:16 PM EST up reply actions

I agree, and when he got ceronne in the eye, to me it looked like a poke (inadvertent)

by kevin on Jan 26, 2009 4:17 PM EST up reply actions

His fallopian tube fell out and he was no longer able to continue.

by SHORT_BUS on Jan 26, 2009 4:21 PM EST up reply actions

not really funny, leave the jokes to Holland!

by kevin on Jan 26, 2009 4:23 PM EST up reply actions

Oh please Kevin… He was going to finish him in the final 2 min? That is a really dumb comment when Cerrone had 4 1/2 rounds to do it and couldn’t.. Varner still won the 4rth round with a broken foot and hand.. but yeah i’m sure a guy that just went at it with a broken foot and hand in the cage with one of the best guys in the WEC is a sissy.. big time keyboard fighter like you..haha

by Kory on Jan 26, 2009 4:43 PM EST up reply actions

lol, he was getting his ass handed to him, and took a knee that we could debate wether it was legal or not all day, then quit! He was gassed ceroone was fine. Varner won the decision hands down, but I think he may have been finished! Sorry I have a different opinion god!

by kevin on Jan 26, 2009 5:11 PM EST up reply actions

It should have been NC & with a rematch next fight

by Joker Jo on Jan 26, 2009 6:53 PM EST up reply actions

Is that his excuse for the dick tuck he made during the fight?

by SHORT_BUS on Jan 26, 2009 4:13 PM EST reply actions

Did anyone else notice the Cowboy’s “In Your Face Nipple Tweek” didn’t work out for him? It was done during the staredown… Doesn’t he know that you HAVE to gently twist your nippies as you get introduced by the ring announcer? You don’t tug violently at them as you approach the staredown!

That is the ONLY thing Cowboy needs to fix to win the rematch. Well, that and takedown defense and keep that counter roundhouse coming when Varner throws the overhand right.

by ViolentMike on Jan 26, 2009 5:00 PM EST up reply actions

what did frank mir say while commentating?

by joseph.67 on Jan 26, 2009 4:16 PM EST reply actions

From what I took from Mir, he was surprised that Cerrone was getting the better of the standup and that’s why Varner kept taking him down. And that Cerrone was like a terminator. He kept coming forward despite the punishment he had taken, and both of his eyes nearly being swollen shut.

by UFCAddict on Jan 26, 2009 4:19 PM EST reply actions

He d.ick tucked and took the easy way out.

by SHORT_BUS on Jan 26, 2009 4:22 PM EST reply actions

Hopefully Cerrone gets pissed off and don’t fool around with the hugging in the rematch. Next time Cerrone will whoop that ass.

by brandongk4 on Jan 26, 2009 4:25 PM EST reply actions

It was a good entertaining fight, and I thought Mir did a good job with announcing to bad it had to end the way it did.

I also think Varner could be a good subsitute speaker for Dana White if for some reason he wasn’t able to make an event. I haven’t heard that many F bombs since a Dana White Tirade on the Tuf shows.

by JSP on Jan 26, 2009 4:42 PM EST reply actions

The Cowboy seemed to be much bigger than Varner and it didn’t seem that Varner hurt him at all, but I would have scored the bout 49-46 for Varner. We don’t know what would have happened in the last 3 minutes but after the hand and foot mend maybe we will get to see it again. I don’t know what Varner can do different next time, but I have the feeling that we didn’t see everything the Cowboy has in his arsenal. Cowboy may get the best of him next time, but for now Varner is still champ. You hate to see anyone break something and have to take time off as this is their job and if they can’t fight, they don’t get paid. Funny thing is, the guy who lost actually seemed to have more class than the winner….go figure

by BeerMan on Jan 26, 2009 4:57 PM EST reply actions

Cerrone had the SAME look as Rich Franklin when their favoring score was read. Bet it was the same judge too!

albeit i think Franklin, honestly, won!

Varner was back pedeling so much, no wonder he broke his foot. ha
To me he was looking to get out of the fight.

by CraigMack on Jan 26, 2009 5:43 PM EST reply actions

Varner is a punk he gets hurt he quits simple as that. That knee grazed him he shit his pants and didn’t want anymore of what cerrone had in store for him he can dish out punishment but scared to take any anyone see the Franca fight he was winning the first two rounds then Franca dominated the 3rd and Varner ran away from him like a little punk. The guys a disgrace.

by yeah on Jan 26, 2009 6:19 PM EST reply actions

In the post fight interview he claimed it was right hand that was broken……..

by kokondo on Jan 26, 2009 6:52 PM EST reply actions

As soon as I saw him walking out in those whore glasses I wanted him to lose. His days as champ are numbered.

by SHORT_BUS on Jan 26, 2009 7:08 PM EST reply actions

Yeah he looked like George Michael

by DirtbagHtr on Jan 26, 2009 9:38 PM EST up reply actions

To me it looked like Varner was looking for a way out of the fight. He felt Cowboy closing in on him and knew he would be looking form the KO. Varner has kind of a reputation for being soft willed (asking his corner to quit between rounds in the past). Varner was definatley hurt by that knee, but I don’t think it was too bad for him to continue. But he’s the judge of that not me. I think his had and foot were hurting him too bad and he just wanted a way out of that fight. I give Varner all the credit in the world for fighting with a broken hand and foot, but he could have finished the fifth round. That knee shouldn’t have been a fight stopper.

by DB on Jan 26, 2009 8:18 PM EST reply actions

Its pretty easy to talk shit about someone “pussing out” in a fight, but know one really knows how bad the knee effected him. im not defending varner, i think hes a bit of a douche, but unless you were the person getting hit in the fight, you really dont know the situation. i cant wait to see the rematch though

by child on Jan 26, 2009 8:42 PM EST reply actions

Varner KO’s Cerrone in a Rematch and shuts everybody up …. its gonna be like the burns-johsnon rematch…. nobody talks about the first fight anymore ….and thats how this one will turn out ..if it does happen asap… if nt ..crunkleton or bart is gettin KO’d

by maxxwell99 on Jan 26, 2009 10:36 PM EST reply actions

What do you mean “you don’t know the situation”? Of course I do. Everyone does. IT WAS ON TAPE. THE KNEE MISSED. You can rewind it a thousand times and you won’t see the knee connect because IT DIDN’T.

by hikuta punch on Feb 1, 2009 4:36 AM EST reply actions

Varner is a puss,Varner was looking for a way out, lol maybe but if i were to fight Varner he would kick my ass. and Varner went 4 1/2 rounds with a far more superior fighter. he still has his belt! but he will never bet a champ like Matt Huges, gsp, bj penn, anderson silva, chuck lidell, or that little shit urijah faber. he has no class nor balls that is it. i cant wait to see someone beat his ass, and they wiil but i’m sure he will tap out after a few good punches.
