Affliction spends $3,308,000 to attract 13,228 for 'Day of Reckoning'

Affliction "Day of Reckoning" took place yesterday, January 24, from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California and featured the much-anticipated heavyweight showdown between WAMMA Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko and former UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei Arlovski.

The live gate produced a total of 13,228 spectators, down 11 percent from last year's Affliction "Banned" event that brought in 14,832.

MMAmania.com was also able to obtain a list of fighter salaries from the California State Athletic Commission for "Day of Reckoning," and the big winner certainly seems to be double-A, who pockets a cool mil and a half despite his knockout loss to "The Last Emperor."

The total disclosed payroll for Affliction's sophomore effort was $3,308,000, slightly lower than last July's event that saw them shell out $3,332,100.

Keep in mind the official salaries do not include bonuses (like Fedor's, which is rumored to be well over a million dollars) or sponsorships and also exclude taxes, fees and other miscellaneous payments.

By comparison, the total disclosed payroll for UFC's star-studded pay-per-view UFC 92 'The Ultimate' back on December 27 was only $1,381,000.

Below is a complete list of fighter salaries from Affliction 'Day of Reckoning':

Star-divide

Fedor Emelianenko $300,000 def. Andre Arlovski $1,500,000
Josh Barnett $500,000 def. Gilbert Yvel $30,000
Vitor Belfort $200,000 ($80,000 to shown, $120,000 to win) def. Matt Lindland $225,000
Renato "Babalu" Sobral $90,000 ($60,000 to show, $30,000 to win) def. R. T. Sokoudjou $50,000
Paul Buentello $90,000 ($70,000 to show, $20,000 to win) def. Kiril Sidelnikov $10,000
Dan Lauzon $12,000 def. Bobby Green $4,000
Jay Hieron $45,000 ($20,000 to show, $25,000 to win) def. Jason High $10,000
Antonio Rogerio Nogueira $150,000 ($120,000 to show, $30,000 to win) def. V. Matyushenko $50,000
L.C. Davis $14,000 ($7,000 to show, $7,000 to win) def. Bao Quach $7,000
Albert Rios $6,000 ($3,000 to show, $3,000 to win) def. Antonio Duarte $3,000
Brett Cooper $10,000 ($5,000 to show, $5,000 to win) def. Patrick Speight $2,000

Andre Arlovski $1,500,000 and Fedor just $300.000?!?! I dont understand that.

by mrOctagon on Jan 25, 2009 5:48 AM EST reply actions

…and Barnett gets, $500,000 to Fedor’s $300,00, OK, he might get some PPV money, but it appears his management team is short selling him. Plus, no KO or win bonus for Fedor???

by Stu on Jan 25, 2009 7:52 AM EST up reply actions

Fedor got a 1 million signing on bonus when he signed for affliction

by Braveheart on Jan 25, 2009 8:47 AM EST up reply actions

I thought it was $3 million?

by El Mexicutioner, formerly The Mexicutioner on Jan 25, 2009 9:25 AM EST up reply actions

I believe it work like this:

Fedor only making 300,000 fight salary, but they also give him like a million or 2 per fight, but they dont count it as fighter salary.

by john on Jan 25, 2009 10:10 AM EST up reply actions

Fedor has a deal that he gets all the rights to the video of his fights. No one can re-air or re-use any of his stuff without his say so. Pretty smart if you think about it. That is why his pay is much lower than you would expect. He is making it up on the backend with the selling of the rights to use the video he owns.

by sawyer1370 on Jan 25, 2009 10:30 AM EST up reply actions

Yes he does own his video footage rights but only in europe. I hear that he made over 2 million last night, they just dont count it as fighter salary!

Fedor = Boss Playin! “Its pimpin, pimpin!”

Salaries like this are going to be the demise of Affliction!!

by ---Caesar--- on Jan 25, 2009 11:06 AM EST up reply actions

Maybe not! if they got 5 million to throw at De La Hoya just for him to attend the event, they may not be in as much financial trouble as people would like to believe. 5 million to De La HOya is more money then the entire fighter pay outs put together!

by john on Jan 25, 2009 11:16 AM EST up reply actions

fedors pay is tax free if its not on salary and they can pay it anyway they want not just from the companies money.. and goldem boy pay arlovski that much because hes a boxer under there name as well so he’s gonna get some extra dough for that and he showed hes one hell of a boxer

by randy murders on Jan 25, 2009 11:46 AM EST up reply actions

JOHN – I think the $5 M was for all of Golden Boy Pro. this is what i posted in the larry merchant post.

I think what he meant is that Affliction paid Golden Boy Productions $5 Million to help with with Affliction. That probably included Oscar’s personal involvement throughout the week and at the event last night as well as GBP producing the events using their cameras, camerament, lights and production team to cut and edit everything together live. The show last night did look MUCH better than the first.

If you think about it that makes the most sense. $5 M for delahoya’s involvement and all of the camerawork and editing sounds like a lot, but then again I have no idea how much it should cost for all of the lighting, cameras, microphones and the live editing of the event.

by joseph.67 on Jan 25, 2009 12:02 PM EST up reply actions

Fedor makes $1.3 mil per show so there is an additional $1 mil that they haven’t disclosed. Crazy that AA gets more. And the $5 mil is so that ODHL shows his face. There’s definitely gonna be a Donald Trump fee too that’s not disclosed. I mean he’s just attaching his name for marketing purposes. Let’s see how PPV does.

by NameNotRequired on Jan 25, 2009 2:59 PM EST up reply actions

Fedor also get rights to his name in Affliction. So if he leaves affliction he can use his tapes in the UFC if he wanted.

by CITY BOXER on Jan 25, 2009 11:54 AM EST up reply actions

I was thinking the same thing, but im assuming when Fedor signed his contract the reason why it was so low was because alot of people in the MMA world felt Fedor had not truly been tested in the ring, and thus he might not be half as good as he has looked. Im sure he is getting a big bonus that isnt being shown.

by bullwhip on Jan 25, 2009 3:54 PM EST up reply actions

fedor’s bonus from the ppv buys is gonna be somethin fierce…so initial numbers are deceiving…

by mctapout on Jan 25, 2009 12:23 PM EST up reply actions

Its because Fedor pays his opponents to take a dive. Silva got a lot more than Fedor last time. I see a pattern.

by Sean M on Jan 25, 2009 1:11 PM EST up reply actions

sean that’s just stupid. why would they take a dive? they would probably make much more on promotions and sponsorships as a champion than anything fedor could offer him. why don’t you fight fedor and we’ll see how long that fight lasts.

13,000 not bad, it seemed pretty full i hope they did good with the ppv buys they put on a great show.the pay seems right aa made alot but i thin the headliners deserve good money lindland was overpaid but the rest of the saleries seems right on point.

by PW on Jan 25, 2009 11:02 AM EST up reply actions

The attendance money is the tip of the cake. The PPV pays for them, and at 45$ per view, with 100.000 viewers they have done right allready. I hope they did far more than that.

by Adam on Jan 25, 2009 6:29 AM EST up reply actions

For sure they paid to much, but they are trying to give UFC a bad name, and are probally willing to lose money……..Is it smart? I think Afflictions only chance to make money is when Fedor fights and if they didn’t make money at this one that’s pretty brutal. I don’t think these fights helped out Affliction either they were pretty lame for entertainment value, even though haymakers can happen in any fight Affliction was unlucky to have two in their top three. Another thing Affliction has to do is get rid of the boxing ring the stoppage from getting tied up in the ropes takes away from the fight, the octagon was created for MMA so use it. All in all if Affliction even makes money the performances did nothing to gain support outside the Hardcore MMA Fan.

by Beaver on Jan 26, 2009 7:34 PM EST up reply actions

Fedor dusnt get % of ppv, there aint gona be that much money there. he just gets a bonus from m1 for keeping the belt, which should be MORE then AA pay!

by Esposito on Jan 25, 2009 1:45 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t think Lindland is anywhere near “the most known fighter in the world”. I doubt his political aspirations have garnered him many fans outside of Oregon, most of which he probably had already. Outside of Oregon he’s probably one of the least popular fighters in the US. And I don’t think he has much of a Japanese fan base because he’s never fought in Pride, Dream, etc.

yes, he got overconfident and made the stupidest of mistakes.. affliction is doing the right thing paying their fighters good, but it’s just too early for them to do it! they need to establish themselves first.. and if they could do that the UFC would have to pay their fighters better aswell..

by RoB on Jan 25, 2009 7:34 AM EST up reply actions

The problem that Affliction is having is that they are banking on hardcore fans. They need to get Fedor some english lessons and they need to media blitz Affliction brand to the mainstream media. A guy like Vitor Belfort who knows English very well and is an exciting fighter is the kind of guy they need to get on shows like Live with Regis and or Jimmy Kimmel etc.. Get some of these guys out there on TRL or The Best Damn Sports Show. They are not suffering from a lack of good fights its just a lack of proper marketing. This is why I think that them landing Tito AND Frank Shamrock or Cung Le is big because they bring large fan bases of their own and all three are cross over appeal type personalities. They need to do some thing and do it soon.

by Tommy B on Jan 25, 2009 7:39 AM EST reply actions

I 100% agree, even Babalu who speaks decent english and can put on a good show in the ring would be great.

by Kibs on Jan 25, 2009 8:16 AM EST up reply actions

That is a great point, and shows why Dana and the UFC are doing so well. People can bash Dana and the UFC all they want, but their product is better and every time Affliction has a card, it just proves it again. The reason why the UFC doesn’t have a deal with HBO or CBS is because they refuse to give up the production rights. Each PPV and each preview show they do gets better and better. They draw in fans that way. Their fighters are approachable and likeable. If they aren’t or do something stupid (like Babalo) then they get cut. Love it or hate it, the UFC has a better product right now, and until Affliction and everyone else can learn the lessons already learned by the UFC for the past 6 plus years, they always will.

by sawyer1370 on Jan 25, 2009 10:35 AM EST up reply actions

not everyone gets it. belfort, babalu those are the perfect guys to be the faces of affliction. your best fighter isn’t always your best spokesperson. that’s why the ufc doesn’t put anderson silva in interviews or on letterman. those jobs go to mohawk man or rich franklin.

by JB on Jan 25, 2009 10:54 AM EST up reply actions

great point jb!

Sawyer: Yes the UFC has a better product, but what do you expect? The UFC has done 95 ppv’s already, and countless fight nights and TUF Finale’s…They have had years to work the kinks out into the product that it is today.

Affliction has improved drastically from its 1st to 2nd show. Imagine if they can stick around how much better Affliction 20 becomes! It a trail and error process. Ufc has had time to work out the kinks, and if Affliction can survive…They will do the same!

Everyone is talking about how their finances are all screwed up and that they will fold very soon. Not so sure about that. Afffliction has enough money that they could pay Oscar 5 million just to attend the event. This tells me that they arent as broke as many of the haters would like them to be.

WAR Affliction!

by john on Jan 25, 2009 10:59 AM EST up reply actions

The $5M is most likely what they paid Golden Boy to produce the event, as well as have Oscar show up.

If you don’t think they are in financial trouble, where is their income coming from? can you give me a breakdown in numbers? You know that they get 50% at most of the PPV fee, right?

so with fedor’s (at least) $1M bonus, 3.2M in salaries, 5M in production/oscar that is about $10M so far to put on the show minus tax costs, cost to rent the arena, advertising and other expenses. How much do you think they made last night? I didn’t notice any paid sponsors on the mat of the ring.

Tito needs to be “fired” from being a commentator he was terrible! Good show overall, but they can’t shell out big bucks with little return. They can’t afford a 1.5m guaratee to AA and come out on top. If he would have won different story. AA definately had him if it wasn’t for the mental mistake. Should have stepped back or hit another front kick even I saw the flying knee coming whne he went to the corner with him.

Well Affliction must be selling a $h!t load of t-shirts to cover the cost of running these things.

Tito wasn’t that bad. I don’t agree with the crowd booing him.

by RobH86 on Jan 26, 2009 12:10 PM EST up reply actions

Two of the best fights were o the undercard: Duarte/Rios and Davis/Quach. It was pretty cool to see that both victors came back from losing the first round.
I was anticipating more from Baby Fedor, being that I’ve never seen him fight. It seem like Buentello was on another level than him, and this is just Paul Buentello. Buentello seemed to be in great condition for a guy his size. It was a good win for him.
lauzon must have some sensitive pubes because those last two "groin" shots he got were glances at best. Anyway, he was able to pull out a sub, but Green did pretty good for taking the fight short notice.
Sokoudjou was the same post Pride, highly overrated Sokoudjou that everyone seems to have come to terms with. The guy is simple to figure out: let him go a round and gas then move in for the kill. Easy fight to predict. Dana, resign Babalu. He would make for some great match ups in the UFC HW division.
I thought Belfort would win by TKO, but never by the devastating KO he dealt Lindland. Hopefully Belfort can do some things at 185. As for being able to beat Anderson Silva like Tito suggested, Ive never heard such garbage.
Barnett pretty much dominated Yvel, but Yvel just wouldn’t go away. He definitely redefined "intelligently defending yourself." Anyone else would have been done once Barnett got the mount the first time let alone the third.
Fedor/Arlovski: I swear I almost missed this punch. I was about to look away at the TV and Arlovski just falls to the canvas. Another impressive finish for Fedor. As for the rest of the fight, AA was pretty much winning that fight, but then Fedor happened, and that was that.
IMO this was a surprisingly good card. Also IMO, the fights were a lot better than UFC 93. Hopefully we will get to see Fedor/Barnett somehow, someway. But, judging by the numbers that are out for this show, It would surprise me if we did under the Affliction banner. I seriously doubt the gate or the PPV buys covered the gate, and knows how many of those tickets were comped. I listen to a KROQ in L.A. online and it seemed like they were giving out at least one pair every hour this past week. Plus, and I dont know if this is true of not because I didn’t see it, but Larry Merchant supposedly said on the HBO broadcast of the Margarito/Mosely fight that Affliction paid De La Hoya $5 million to be at the Affliction event. Like I said dont know if it’s true, but Affliction has gotten a bad reputation for it’s lack of fiscal conservatism, so it wouldnt surprise me. Overall, this card was was a pretty good way to kill 5 or so hours of my life.
Biggest losers: Gary-Jerry Millen who’s high school girl-like celebratory screaming could be heard in the ring after Fedor won and anyone who was unfortunate enough to sit through Tito’s post fight interviews. I can just imagine what it’s like when he and Jenna try to have a conversation. God help their kids, seriously.

UFC underpays.

Everyone keeps saying, how can they afford to pay out 3 million in salaries.

The UFC could pay 10 million in salaries and still have a healthy profit on their bigger PPVs.

by Ben on Jan 25, 2009 11:50 AM EST reply actions

they use a lot of the profits that they make trying to get MMA legalized in states across the US and to build the brand overseas. A lot of their overseas shows have lost money. They are able to lose money like this by using their profits wisely to build up their company so that they will make more in the long run and then everyone will be happy.

by joseph.67 on Jan 25, 2009 12:12 PM EST up reply actions

Good Point! Everybody thinks that the UFC is making millions upon millions on their fighters. People forget how much $$ UFC puts into getting MMA legalized in the states and putting on shows overseas.

by fokman on Jan 25, 2009 12:33 PM EST up reply actions

I’m nut hugging on the UFC, but they do it the right way, and they really care about the future of MMA. Not everyone will agree with everything, and I still think the majority of the fighters are underpaid, but I don’t know all the facts on all the other perks and money the fighters make for showing up at other events and stuff. The top guys seems to be doing pretty well.

If the UFC keeps it up, and Affliction can keep improving and make enough money to put on shows, MMA as a whole will continue to gain fans and support. All I want to see is great fighting, and hopefully last night will be another step in the right direction to ensure all of us MMA fans have the ability to see great fights on a regular basis.

by sawyer1370 on Jan 25, 2009 2:23 PM EST up reply actions

Its good to see fighters getting good paydays and i hope that affliction survives just so that there is a reasonable alternative to the UFC and to force UFC to pay their fighters better. Does anyone know if they will release the ppv buy numbers? I think they can survive if they are breaking even since everyone involved has other revenue streams (gb/trump/affliction etc)but since their payouts are so high that may be doubtful.

Anyone have a reasonable breakeven number? They pay their fighters 3.3 mill, and if they pay Oscar $5 mil and including promotion it seems like at least $10 million. Their live gate probably didnt cover 1/2 the salaries so it would seem that they need a pretty decent ppv buy rate to break even. Another point is that other then Larry Merchant there is no proff that they paid Oscar $5 mil, and that may not count in expenses for this card since that amount may also involve future cards.

by mudwane on Jan 25, 2009 11:56 AM EST reply actions

DOnt forget that they have to pay the Honda Center a portion of the gate. They have to pay for the production unless that was included in the 5 mil to golden boy. They also have to pay the workers that made the show happen. IF they didnt get more than 250K PPV buys I think they are introuble or atleaset will have to cut the salaries for the next show.

by fokman on Jan 25, 2009 12:30 PM EST up reply actions

I would be pretty suprised if they got 250k buys but i dont really know. They mentioned that they want to do 3 cards a year or one card every 4 months which seems reasonable since they dont really have enough fighters to do much more then that. It would help them if they had a little deeper roster since after a while fans might not want to see the same people at the top of the card even if it is a great fighter like Fedor.

by mudwane on Jan 25, 2009 1:09 PM EST up reply actions

One small thing most people don’t know. If you go to a PPV fight at a bar, the bar has to pay a fee to show the fight. The UFC charges about $1500 for this, and Affliction charges $4000-5000. I had a long conversation with the General Manager at my local Buffalo Wild Wings about this last week. They get good turn outs for Affliction, but do better with UFC PPV’s. Their profit is about 2-1 on events. So there are many little details almost all of us don’t understand or know about.

With all the big time investors Affliction has (Trump, Golden Boy, etc.) they can’t be just throwing money away. If they did, then investors like that wouldn’t stick around just to lose money. Trump isn’t a dummy, he’s only in it to make money, so there has to be a light at the end of the tunnel for Affliction, at least one would think.

by sawyer1370 on Jan 25, 2009 2:29 PM EST up reply actions

Affliction can’t sustain this. The UFC could barely sustain payouts that paled in comparison to this until TUF came out and they bloated the fight cards with recognizable, but otherwise C level fighters that they could pay pennies.

by Clayton on Jan 25, 2009 12:33 PM EST reply actions

As far as Fedor’s pay, do you think M1 would have their name anywhere in that arena, or have crap fighters like Sidlinkov in the show if they didn’t controll Fedor? He’s getting a discounted rate due to all the promotion M1 is getting.

I was very very imopressed with Day of Reckoning…Now if they could just sign some new talent (elite xc fighters) to mix up their cards or borrow some from Dream, then it will mos def vbe fun to have 2 big major MMA orgs in the USA.

Overeem, Aoki, Alvarez, Crocop, Hunt, Schilt, Lebanner, Gomi, Diaz, Lawler, Shields, Manhoef, Calvancante, Hansen, Brett Rogers, Murillo Rua, Noons, Jacare, Mosuasi and many others to mix it up.

Belfort vs Manhoef
Lebanner vs Sylvia
Crocop vs Arlovski

those are a couple fights i would like to see in Affliction.

Now, having said all that…………..the $3,308,000 that they spent on thsoe fighters salaries is the main reason thsi is not likely to happen. They have put all their money into thsoe fighters that they probably can not afford any othe top fighters and their high salaries!!! The f***** up by settign the salaries so high. Good for thsoe fighters, not mad at them, glad they are getting theirs, but the company will not make it if they continue to pay the SAME fighters on EVERY SINGLE card that money. WIsh they woudl have spread the wealth around from the beginning with some fighters i listed….lets just see what happens!
