Rich Franklin injury from Dan Henderson eye poke at UFC 93 does not require surgery (Pic)

Props: RichFranklin.com

Quoteworthy:

"After losing the decision to Dan Henderson, Rich has some healing to do. He had to get stitches in two spots on his head from the head butt, and stitches on his shin from one of his kicks. Everyone has been asking about his eye -- from the eye poke at the end of the fight -- and we are happy to say he doesn’t need surgery. He does have a cut on the white part of his eye and a slight tear, but it doesn’t require surgery. Pictures have been posted so you can see what it looks like now."

Perhaps it looks worse than it really is ... although the sight of Rich Franklin's mangled eye in the wake of his fight against Dan Henderson at UFC 93: "Franklin vs. Henderson" looks grizzly. The good news is no surgery is needed. Anthony Johnson was not so lucky (he was felled by an accidental eye poke just last year, which needed surgery to fix). "Ace" caught a finger in the eye during the third and final round of the main event fight in Dublin, Ireland. He went on to lose the contest via split decision.

Doesn’t his eye always look like that?

Yo there is an interesting video floating around about Satoshi Iishi sparring with Couture. Iishi doesnt look that bad. I been trying to post a link, but Mania isnt letting me.

Ishi, isn’t that the Judo guy from the past Olympics???

Regarding Hendo/Franklin – The fight I have wanted to see for years – the long reigning Pride 183 lb champ vs the ong reginging UFC 185 lb champ. And as all the regulars on this site know, I am a HUGE Hendo fan. Did he do enough to pull off the win? Yes. Was he impressive in doing so? Not overly, but he was fighting a very well rounded Rich Franklin. The age is DEFINITELY starting to catch up to Dan, as evindent by his cardio. The Dan that has been fighting in the UFC as of late is NOT the same Dan that dominated over in Japan. He just does not have that killer instinct anymore. In Pride, he would step into the ring with the mentality that his opponent just got blown by his wife and kicked his dog on the way out – He would try and take people’s heads off! Hendo did land a nice shot in the first that dropped Rich.

I am not one to fall off the so called “bandwagon” of my favorite fighters. Hendo has been a favorite of mine for years, and he will continue to be my favorite MW and LHW until he retires, but unfortunately, since coming to the UFC, I see that date sooner rather than later.

Liddell, Shogun, and Wanderlei are all HUGE fights at 205 that are out there for Dan. But first he must coach TUF and then fight Bisping. Hopefully the fight with Bisping is very shortly after the season finishes airing (and they being airing immediately after taping). Time is not on the side of Hendo.

As a Hendo lover and a Bisping hater, it is sooooooooooo sad to say that seeing Bisping win a pathetic decision win over Dan is absolutely possible – I can’t beleive I just typed that. Dan’s right hand is much quicker than Leben’s left, so he has a better chance of landing that KO bomb to Bisping – but I think Hendo is going to have to rely on his Greco Roman roots more than ever aginst Bisping and just stay in tight, or take him down the the ground and pound on him. Much more to say, but I’m hungry and need a bacon egg and cheese….

Hendo/Franklin was a very enjoyable fight – 2 class guys. Hated to see that eye injury at the end of the fight. If we’re really lucky, maybe we’ll get to see Bisping fight Hendo, then Ace. (Although I can’t see him lasting with either)

Yeah Iishi is the judo guy that won this past olympics.

Does ANYONE ELSE have any feedback on Hendo or the Hendo/Franklin fight or Hendo coaching TUF????

I hope that Hendo gets tired of hearing everyone say that he looks tired when he is fighting and he comes out knocks Bisping’s head clear off his shoulders in the opening minute! But Hendo isn’t typically one to care about what the media is saying. (Unlike Joe Daddy who threw a 5 year old girl pissy-fit and started whining that he should not be an underdog to KenFlo, and then he gets choked out in a minute.)

by ViolentMike on Jan 20, 2009 11:10 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think Hendo is declining as much as you say. He’s .500 since coming to the UFC, but the level of competition he’s fought is impressive. Rampage, Silva, Franklin and an up in coming Palhares. Coming out of those fights with 2 victories is nothing to hang your head over.

Even in Pride, Dan wasn’t winning all of his fights by devastating knockouts. He’s gone the distance in a lot of his fights, which is to be expected since his greatest stength is his wrestling.

Bisping looked good against Leben, but Hendo is in a different class of fighter. Bisping hasn’t fought someone of Hendo’s ability yet. It will be a good fight. Bisping will have a very difficult time with Hendo’s wrestling. I see a UD for Hendo in that fight.

by RealDrew on Jan 20, 2009 11:10 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I have been saying it for a while now Mike that Hendo doesant look like the same Animal he was in Pride. I chalked it up due to the weight cut that he hates so much to fight at 185 lbs. I thought he would have more energy fighting at 205 lbs, but I was wrong. As an admitted Bisping fan, I got Bisping out pointing Hendo to a decision!

Happy that Hendo is coaching TUF over Rich. Rich should never set foot in the middleweight division ever again!

Also, Check out the semi-nude pics of Arryiani that are floating around the internet!

Btw, Arlovski is being paid more then a million to fight Fedor…. Cant blame him for leaving the UFC!

by john on Jan 20, 2009 11:20 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I have been wondering if anyone thinks Rich may be getting past his prime. He is 34 now and may be on the decline. There is no shame in losing to Anderson and Hendo, but where does he go from here. He has to stay at 205, but can he handle the bigger guys with some ground skills because some of the UFC LHW are HUGE.

by BNF on Jan 20, 2009 12:39 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

BNF: I dont think Franklin is declining just yet. Franklin bust his ass in the gym so he isnt going to decline as fast as some other guys like Hendo (who I have always felt under trains for certain fights).

I think Bisping has a better chance against Hendo then he would against Franklin…for what its worth!

I agree that he has to stay at 205…there is nothing less for him at middleweight unless Anderson makes a permanent change to LHW and Vacates the middleweight title. I HAVE nO idea how Rich will do with the Beasts that await him at 205. I would love to see a rematch between Franklin and Machida.

Other fights for Rich at 205:
THiago silva
Forrest “OVER rATED” Griffin
Brandon Vera
Jardine
Chuck Liddell

I am not saying Rich can beat all the fighters I just listed, but I know he can hang with those guys, with the only exception being Tiago, who I just think is a DESTrUCTIVE SOB, that Franklin should avoid!

in response to Realdrew (couldnt reply up there). what about when Bisping fought that one guy… about 4 fights ago… oh yea Rashad Evans. kinda went to a SPLIT decision and i think he may just be the champ now. i guess he hasnt fought any real caliber fighters though. he was over sized and still hung in there for a decision with who is now the champ. i dont think Rashad has changed all that much since then, he just really knows how to follow a gameplan in the way he baited in CHuck and Forrest both.

I like Bisping, even though i cant understand a word he says, cuz he seems to get better with each fight and he works for everthing to be a complete fighter, not just a one trick pony

John, anytime you have info of nude Arianne pics, feel free to hijack away. BTW, VM, I didn’t expect Hendo’s striking to be on par with Rich’s in the first place, and I didn’t think he would finish Franklin on the ground; to be honest the fight went about as I expected. But I will say, with the way he’s looked lately and with the way Bisping has looked, I will not be surprised at all if Bisping takes the fight.

And on a side note… it’s a slow as hell day, I know it we’re still in the A.M. (least in CO) but I feel like havin a few beers. Ah, beer, the reason I get up every afternoon.

Its not like I go off topic and talk about Politics or school work. AS long as I am keeping it mma related, whats there to complain about…

Ask around, my track record for what I post turning out to be true, is probably around 80%. Many people on this site can back me up on this….I broke the news about Randy Couture returning to the UFC to fight Brock at least a week before it was EVER posted on the internet. The news was so fresh at the time that even Mania didnt believe me and was laughing at me….Sure enough, Randy came back, and Fought Lesnar like I promised! THat was probably one of the biggest mma stories of the year, and guess who reported it 1st? YOurs f’in truly!

I am not newbie and have been checkig this sight for a few years I still google UFC Mania to get to it. Sometimes posting things that are compltely irelevant to a thread or off topic can be annoying, as it tends to completly change the flow and direction towards a different subject altogether. I do not mind skimming through the non relevant stuff until it gets back on topic again, but sometimes it is a pain in the ass. Some do not mind this, which is up to them, but it is not always news that may well be significant. The exclusives are good, but I am not too fussed wether I here it from Mania the following day or the day after. This is not meant to annoy John and his loyal fans, but since the issue was brought up, I thought I would add my two cents worth.

Didn’t Mania set up some community MMA site. Exclusives and off topic subjects could be posted there.
To all my MMA maniacs loyal followers and any who are interested, go to the community thread to hear my latest exclusive or off topic comments. I the oracle have spoken. PS, don’t forget to say your prayer and take your vitamins.
Some maniacs may get a little upset by this, and feel like ripping off there t-shirts in anger, but this could mean you have your game consoles taken away from you by your parents and sent straight to bed with no supper.

Boy what a trick Hendo did to Rich…Hendos known for dirty boxing. As Rich was mounting a good attack, Hendo pulls a Stooge move. Rich’s camp forgot to show him how to defend the eye poke.

by holmz76 on Jan 20, 2009 9:54 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

The standard Curly defense of the vertical hand between the eyes would not have worked there, as Henderson was a step ahead of it by attacking only the one eye and not both.

almost all old school people use dirty tactics.. hendo ALWAYS does something dirty whether it be eye pokes, covering peoples mouths when hes on top of them,or slightly headbutting in the clinch holyfield style

by randy murders on Jan 20, 2009 10:39 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

If you ain’t cheatin, you ain’t tryin!!!!

Afterall, it is a FIGHT!

No, but really, Hendo is not known for poking eyes, when you are in the clinch, heads are bound to collide occasionally, and covering the mouth of an opponent while on the ground is an EXCELLENT tactic that disrupts thier breathing and it should be used more in MMA. Whenever a UFC fighter does it, ROgan points it out and says how smart they are.

Hendo does NOT fight dirty. He fights smart.

There are only two things dirty with Hendo – his dirty boxing and that Filthy Stanking friend of his, Matt Lindland

Damn he looks like he got FUCKED UP!!!!!!!!… Had I not seen the fight I Would have thought that he was just beat down based on that pic.. Franklin is pretty much done in the UFC in terms of any serious title hunt in 185 or 205. I dont see him beating any of the legit title contenders or in the 185 I dont see him beating Silva. I do think that they can juice Franklins name and market ability for maybe three more fights but if he loses all three then he is more than done.

Franklins future should include fights against the following "Wanderlie, Chuck Liddell, and then maybe a fight against either Machida or maybe Forrest. Then they need to seriously think about allowing Rich to join the Announce team with Rogan and Goldberg because he is losing the appeal rapidly.

by Tommy B on Jan 20, 2009 11:24 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

The guy has only lost fights to Machida, A. Silva and Hendo; how the hell does that make him washed up?? Dropping a decision to a guy that makes most people’s top 10 p4p lists does not make you washed up…

by O damn he got caught on Jan 20, 2009 12:08 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He’s finished… Watch, Dana will now pair him with some guys who need to build their names up, Franklin has NOT LEGIT chance to win the Light Heavyweight or Middleweight Title… So as a SERIOUS title contender he is finished. You sound surprised when I say that he is finished as a Serious title contender.. I say it in the same way that Dana said that Tito Ortiz was no longer a serious contender when his only recent losses were from Machida, Liddell, and Couture. There is no difference Franklin cannot and will not beat ANY top 5 Light Heavyweight and even though he is the SECOND best Middleweight in the UFC that means nothing because as long as Anderson Silva is Champ Franklin will NEVER be champ of the middleweight division again.

by Tommy B on Jan 20, 2009 1:05 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

There’s a BIG difference, when was the last time Ortiz finished a fight?? No one’s takin Franklin to a decision since Okami; he’s only ever won 2 fights in the UFC by decision. He’s finished every other guy he’s fought with the exceptions of loss’s to A. Silva and now a SPLIT decision to Hendo. Franklin is 34 years old, nearing the end of his carreer? Sure. Washed up/finished? No way; this guy can still potentially hand anyone at LHW a good beating.

What I think people don’t realize is that when the Pride guys were at the top of their game, in the UFC the guys that were leading the pack were Matt Hughes, Randy and Chuck. Where are they now? With the exception of Shogun who has had some shoddy performances they are getting older. This sport evolves so fast and leaves a small window in terms of age were they can actually fight at their peak.

Dumas,
You are right on with that one. Pride had Hendo, Wanderlei, Mirko and Nog. UFC had Chuck, Hughes, Tito, Sylvia, Rich, and Randy. Excellent comparison. All of the guys from the 3rd dynasty of UFC have been left behind in the forward evolution of the sport (Shamrock/Gracie/Severn being dynasty 1, Coleman/Tank/Rizzo/Ricco being dynasty 2) We are now in the 4th incarnation of the UFC with GSP/A.Silva/Brock, with the 5th wave trickling in with guys like the Miller brothers and Bosch. The sport is finally maturing.
