UFC 97: Chuck 'The Iceman' Liddell vs Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua

Fresh off his less-than-thrilling victory over Mark "The Hammer" Coleman at UFC 93: 'Franklin vs. Henderson,' Mauricio Rua was rewarded (or punished, depending on how you look at it) by Dana White with a fight against former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell at UFC 97 on April 18 in Montreal, Canada.
Shogun — the 2005 PRIDE Middleweight Grand Prix winner — was at one point considered among the top 205-pound fighters in the world.
In fact, prior to his upset loss to Forrest Griffin at UFC 76: "Knockout" in September 2007, Rua had defeated a "Who’s-Who" of some of the best names in the sport such as Rampage Jackson, Ricardo Arona, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Alistair Overeem and others.
Hopefully the former ChuteBoxe prodigy will be out for redemption for his disappointing performance against Coleman, as well as for his stinker against Griffin. For a man with his talent, Shogun's time in the UFC thus far has been quite underwhelming, and left a lot of Rua fans scratching their heads.
Liddell defeated Wanderlei Silva in a thrilling three-round war back at UFC 79: "Nemesis" in December 2007. However, he could not capitalize on the momentum and was most recently on the wrong end of a vicious knockout at UFC 88: "Breakthrough" courtesy of Rashad Evans.
At this point, every fight for Liddell could be a dangerous one for his career — the "Iceman" has lost three of his last four fights and he’s no longer the same fighter who dominated the division for two years up until 2007.
Nonetheless, he still possesses the ability to win fights with just one punch, and from what we've seen of the post-PRIDE Rua, that could be all it takes.
Liddell is still a huge draw and a very popular fighter who is very capable of putting on a great show. It has the potential to be a big money match for both fighters, assuming they both stay healthy until April.
Time will tell.

Holy crap!!! All I can say is that Shogun must train and get in better shape cuz if he doesn;t…lights out for him :(
WAR SHOGUN!!!

Look at a fight where Shogun goes past the first, he’s never had good cardio! He just finished guys in the 1st! With Chuck training at other gyms for once, and being a veteran that will bring this fight into the later rounds, I see chuck KO’ing Shogun to the unemployment line! This is a punishment, big time! I guarantee you that Dana was on the phone right after the fight, asking Chuck if he can dispose of Shogun for him! Chuck happily obliged! This is coming from a guy who’s never been a Liddell fan by the way!

From what I have seen from Shogun since entering the UFC, I’m taking Chuck in this one! Shogun has NO CARDIO!!!

Chuck by TKO in the 1st. I doubt that fight will show us a new Shogun.
I’ve heard some things that could shake up the LHW division. Gegard Mousasi, Paulo Filho, and Alan Belcher are rumored to be headed up a weight class. Mousasi is also rumored to be fighting the winner of Soko/Babalu in Affliction. Just thought I’d stir the pot a bit.

I definatly see Liddell ko’ing shogun in this one. Shogun hasn’t looked good in his last two so unless he has a new found determination between now and then, he’s gonna get beat. I think we might see a much different Liddell in this fight.

I think Shogun will get it together and retire Chuck!
by brendan on Jan 18, 2009 9:37 AM EST up reply actions
brendan, I completely agree! If Shogun shows up in good shape, he still would murder most 205 ers. I think this fight was a good measuring stick for shogun and it should have told him that he has a lot more work to do, if he wants to become a factor in the UFC. He is going to have to bust his ass in the gym if he wants to beat Liddell. Its up to him. He has all the tools to beat anyone! If he puts in the work, he will be very tough to beat.
No doubt that Shogun will look better and better with each performance. Just depends on how much better he will look in this fight. I actuially dont think Chuck can Ko shogun. Shogun has an amazing chin…even when he gets rocked he recovers instantly.
Kev: The hate is oozing out of your nostrils. Shogun is not getting cut, win or lose vs. Liddell. Hopefully Wanderlei grabs a hold of Shogun and locks him in the gym with Alejandro the conditioNING COACH FOr like 3 months!
Skills are there for Shogun, once his conditioning is up to par, he will be destructive again!
Btw, he is going to Ko Liddell with Knees from the clinch or submit chuck. No doubt in my mind that shogun can take chuck down!~
by john on Jan 18, 2009 10:15 AM EST up reply actions
Chuck hasn’t ko’d anyone in a long time and Shogun has never been ko’d.
Rua will be in shape and will sub him or gnp him. I can’t wait for the odds on this because without a doubt Chuck will be a large favorite.
by R/p on Jan 18, 2009 10:35 AM EST up reply actions
Yeah, R/p I agree. As a betting man, I am salivating over this fight. Shogun is going to be a nice sized underdog and he is going to have his way with Chuck. Im gonna win big money betting on Shogun in this one. Shogun’s chin is extremely solid. He has never been Ko’ed and when he gets rocked he recovers instantly. Chucks chin is also pretty good (not recently though). Shogun’s chin will hold up against Liddell’s pounches, but Chucks chin will not hold up against Shogun’s knees.
I also think that Shogun can take chuck down and put him on his back! once that happens it wont take shogun long to eran the submission win.
I promise that shogun will get closer to his old form with each UFC fight. He has the skill set required to be a champion. The only holes in his game right nOw is conditioning and Takedown defense, which are 2 of the easiest thing for a fighter to improve on.
I also like the fact that this fight is booked and its just around the corner because Shogun will have to get right back in the training room, not being allowed to take any time off!
Shogun needs to leave his school for a few months and come train with wanderlei. Say what u want about wanderlei, but he is always in phenominal shape. Shogun could use a few months with wandy’s conditioning coach.
by john on Jan 18, 2009 11:10 AM EST up reply actions
A.Silva is suppose to fight against Leites, and Jardine vs Cane. I heard depending on GSP’s outcome a GSP vs Alves is still possible. If GSP wins it will also depend on any injuries he would need a good month of training for Alves? You know he would love to fight in front of his Canadian Fans.

The fights I mentioned in the above post are on this card with Liddell and Rua.
by Beaver on Jan 18, 2009 11:56 AM EST up reply actions
Shogun WILL NOT have his way with Chuck, or anyone in the UFC at 205 if he looks even remotely close to what he did last night. Rua/Liddell happens in less than 3 months, and I don’t think that will be enough time for Shogun to do anything but get Ko’d. Shogun may have a good chin, but if he gasses in the first, then he can be toppled with a jab, and killed with a Liddell overhand right.
by naturalshadow on Jan 18, 2009 11:59 AM EST up reply actions
3 months is more then enough time to get in good cardio shape. Fighters rarely even have training camps longer then 10 weeks. I dont see the problem. IMO he has all the tools needed to beat Chuck, its just up to him to put in the work necessary to go hard for 15 minutes.
by john on Jan 18, 2009 12:27 PM EST up reply actions
john, you have the blinders on my man. you were one of the guys on here saying that he was gonna kill coleman, and u knew he was gonna be healthy and in shape….et. HE LOOKED HORRIBLE. seriously, that was the most underwhelming performance from a supposed superstar that i’ve ever seen. I actually though the stoppage was a bit premature. coleman was startin to reach for a leg. if the ref gives him a second longer he grabs shogun and shogun was too tired to finish him if he got a hold of him. he was hurt no doubt and dead tired but that stoppage was quick. you’ve gotta consider that shogun just may not be the guy you think he is.
by Crowls on Jan 18, 2009 12:27 PM EST up reply actions
smart money is on shogun in this fight… sure he didn’t look great his last two fights but what about chuck? hes lost 3 of 4! and as said before chuck WILL be a solid favorite especially after shogun’s performance… but i truly believe he will make some changes and come back way stronger than lidell and take him out!
by brendan on Jan 18, 2009 2:33 PM EST up reply actions
Shogun looked terrible but i would still take him as an underdog. Like john said, pretty sure he’ll be forced to go to wand and alejarra to work on his cardio. Technique wise he was still sharp especially with the way he was swimming into the clinch. Also now that chuck is training at ATT, he will likely try to show off his wrestling/bjj in the next fight giving shogun more ways to finish him other than chase him down.
by NameNotRequired on Jan 18, 2009 3:14 PM EST up reply actions
name, you can’t really think chuck is gonna try to show off his bjj. he’ll counterpunch like he always does, go for a few takedowns and do a little gnp to solidify rounds, but he’s not gonna go out and change his game completely to try and make a point.
by Crowls on Jan 18, 2009 4:06 PM EST up reply actions
You said it right, he’s gonna try to show that he can do other things while being the same chuck. And anytime you go to the ground against shogun, it’s a liability even if you’re just hoping to score pts with the TD. But definitely agree with what you’re saying.

Not only that…he needs to look good while doing it. I cant believe this is Shogun I’m talking about. He has been in some hard fought wars and either he is not training properly anymore or still hasn’t got over his long lay off.
He has gotta get it together if he has any chance of competing for the title at some point and to be a big draw people have gotta know it is gonna be aa exciting fight not a tired Shogun unable to impose his will on Chuck or its nighty night!

Before this fight and even after the dissapointing loss to Forrest a lot of people (including myself) were calling him possibly no.2 or 3 in the LHW division but with a lack lustre performance like that its not gonna do his stock much good.
If he would have come in and destroyed Coleman like I thought he was gonna do he would have been highly touted for a potential shot somwhere in 2009 maybe with 2 more high profile wins for UFC fans who are unfamiliar with him.
He has a destruction of Rampage on his resume which says a lot for his potential and the UFC can easily use what he did in Pride to promote him as they did with Coleman but he needs to maintain that star quality or he could be left behind this year.
Kevin, do you realise Shogun won that fight last night and is nowhere near 3 strikes. He will come back I’m sure of it. Hopefully he will watch that fight and feel ashamed and come back properly for Chuck.
WAR SHOGUN!!!! :-)

I’m a fan of Shogun, but I also am realistic- dude needs to work on his cardio bigtime. If I were him I would start on that like today. Take a month to go work with Sherk, GSP, or Team Jackson Ive said in the past that I was afraid of Shogun possibly going out like CroCop. Based on knowing what he is capable of and his youth I hope thats not the case.
Overall, I think the card was a pretty lackluster. Now I wish I had watched the stream on channelsurfing.net instead of ordering it. I made money on Belcher though.

Last nights Rua v Coleman fight – was horrible… one of the worst/most frustrating fights I have seen in recent years.. What the F*UK has happened to Rua – If he doesn’t up his game considerably Chuck will Smash him!! and I hope he does… and I don’t want to see Coleman fight MMA again – he should retire and take pride in his former achievements
by DanP on Jan 18, 2009 5:41 AM EST reply actions
I gotta agree. Liddell may stand with him for the 1st round then look to take him down and GnP him to victory in the 2nd. I dont see Liddell being submited at all by anyone….ever. With that being said, I dont think Shogun can KO Chuck unless it’s with his knees, good luck. This will be a HUGE win for Chuck that he desperately needs. Chuck really has all the tools to be a top 5 fighter, he just chooses not use them, thus becoming more predictable than that the sun will come up in the morning. Hopefully he has reinvented himself after realizing he isnt as invincible as he thought he was and will utilize his all around game. I would also like to see Coleman vs Vera, loser doesn’t fight anymore.

Does this mean Wanderlei Silva vs. Luiz Cane at UFC 97 or 98?
Also, this match is not that great. If Shogun was the Chute Boxe Shogun, then this fight will be a dream match for the ages, but I think this is a ploy just to get Chuck back into the title picture, and Dana White/Zuffa will hype up the Rua victory making it seem like it was pure domination, and once Chuck wins, Chcuk will fight Wanderlei or Forrest then for a title.. so on and so forth.
But the great news about this Rampage/Jardine, Chuck vs. Rua fight… that means Lyoto Machida if victorious will get a title shot!
by "Mr. NC-17" on Jan 18, 2009 9:34 AM EST reply actions
I agree about this being a ploy. If Shogun gets with traing partners that take him out of his comfort zone and bring him down to earth a little he can get himself into the title picture. If Blowgun shows up again he’ll get KO’ed.

I must say I am one of the people that thought Shogun was going to come to the UFC and run through the 205 division like like Usain Boltn at the 2008 olympics. Man I feel stupid. So far his 2 performances have been crap. Surgery and time off aside he looks horrible. There have been many fighters who have come off of 1 and 2 year layoffs and looked good. Look at Forrest vs Rampage, there was nearly a year between the fight being set and the actual fight happening (the both of them had 10 months off). Granted they were not contending with injuries. Still none the less he fought a man in his 40’s who was gassed within minutes of the bel ringing. Yes Coleman is big, heavy, and strong, but either way he looked like crap. There is no way in hell that we are going to see an amazing turn around in Shogun. It takes time to develop great cardio. You think Shogun is going to come back the Shogn of old in 3 months, no way! I expect to see him checking the arena lighting from his back in less then 5 minutes. Even the few clinches he had against Coleman that sorta looked good will not be enough. Chuck has not looked great his last few fights but as long as he makes Shogun fight more then 3 minutes he will be in the clear to land a haymaker and put Shogun to sleep. Shogun seriously needs to reconsider his training camps.
by Da Monkey on Jan 18, 2009 9:54 AM EST reply actions
Hmm…3 months to the day. Quite simply not enough time for Shogun to fix his cardio. Unless he KO’s Chuck very quickly, he’s going to get hurt very badly in this one. Chuck is not what he was, but he has one of the nastiest right hands in the business. Shogun would’ve been destroyed by just about ANY other LHW besides the ridiculously washed up Coleman yesterday. He should look at himself as INCREDIBLY lucky to even have that win, and hook back up with Wandy in Vegas and re-learn what conditioning is. As a huge fan of Shogun/Chute Boxe in the past, I hope he can right his ship. As a fan of the sport, I believe its a total lack of respect to come into any fight in that condition. I’ll give him one more chance. If he pulls that shit again, I hope Dana fires him and he’s never sen again.
by --utaptout--..."The Prodigy's" 4th Biggest Hugger on Jan 18, 2009 10:06 AM EST reply actions
I agree with you 100%. Shogun’s conditioning has been terrible in his last 2 fights. He’s just lucky he didn’t get knocked out. If his cardio doesn’t improve (which I highly doubt after watching his last 2 fights), Chuck will get his first KO in a long time.

I don’t understand why some fighters won’t go out of their way to get better conditioning. I know if I was a fighter and my conditioning wasn’t up to par I would seek out a Sherk type camp for all my cardio training. I was so pissed off yesterday watching the Coleman/Rua fight where both men were gassed after 5 min that I just wanted the fight to be over with.

I know I’m being harsh here, and I usually don’t agree with Dana’s bull tactics, but I hope he made it totally crystal clear to Shogun that he’s got to come in in better shape than that. The guy’s 27 years old, for gods sake. He hasn’t even come close to peaking yet. Maybe he needs to sit down with BJ and realize that he has the potential to be a legend. Maybe he took Coleman lightly, maybe it was the time difference over to Europe, maybe something else. No matter what, he’d better fix it, or its going to be a total what if situation.

We really need to re-evaluate some of Shogun’s past achievements when discussing him. The PRIDE Grand Prix from 2005 was fantastic; but the fact is that most of those fighters haven’t panned out since then. Arona is one of them. Lil Nog is another. They just can’t be considered top fighters in any context, so that diminishes Shogun’s wins over them.
Does anyone really think that Arona (who got smashed by UFC reject Sokoudjou) would even be a contender in today’s UFC? No. Does anyone think that Lil Nog (also smashed by the rookie Sokoudjou) would be at the top of the UFC’s 205 lb. division? No. Arona and Lil Nog are both decent fighters; but they were overhyped because of their wins over Henderson and Arona’s win over PRIDE juggernaut Wanderlei Silva. That’s it. Therefore, Shogun’s wins over those two fighters means next to nothing. We are left with Shogun’s win over Rampage being his only impressive win over a top, current fighter. We can’t count Overeem because Overeem is not consistently fighting top guys these days.
Shogun has to rebuild himself in the UFC. The Shogun who just fought Coleman is not gonna make it, and he doubtless knows that. If Shogun can’t completely revamp his conditioning and learn how to strike with some power, he’s flat-out done in the UFC. It’s time to take the rose-colored glasses off.
by Fred on Jan 18, 2009 11:45 AM EST reply actions
Dana White says Liddell is still the most famous name in UFC (the advertising of the UFC on whatever channel promotes pay per view) and Dana doesn’t want Chuck to lose to his next fight so Chuck can be built up again and a fight against Shogun would be a breeze of a KO for Chuck the way Shogun has been perfoming.
I’m a Coleman fan as I knew him from the Columbus gym, but it’s time for him to retire unless his performance had some other legitimate cause such as cutting the 25-30 pounds.

Anyone that doesn’t have it I’m pretty sure chuck can defeat
Therefore shogun sure has kicks maybe with those
I don’t think chuck can ko rua but I see similar fight to wanderleis

Hughes was number 1 forever same with liddel shogun was number 1 for some time tito was a long time champ, how are these guys doing today? Remember how serra wasn’t even on the radar until he fought gsp and for almost 1 year was considered by mma weekly as the number 1 welter weight, now he’s number 7. And I sure after he fights matt hughes won’t even be on there anymore. 2009 will be a very interesting year as to who keep there title and how things will turn out.

I’ve been a shogun fan since his debut in pride…I have a few of his fights on dvd and especially his grandprix tournament performance from Final Conflict 2005…The only way I see Shogun winning is if his conditioning is superb…He is an aggressive fighter that never stops walking in front of you whether he is gassed or not…That can lead to his ultimate downfall against Chuck since the Iceman is an excellent counter puncher…Shogun wins the fight IMO..His last performance will make him stronger…Shogun by split decision (leg kicks will score big on the judges score card)

This is a perfect match for the Iceman to turn it back around if he is ever going to. I hope he does. Even for the ppl that do not like chuck, you know you enjoy watching him. At that any second he can KO anyone. Hopefully Rua will come in better than the coleman match, that was so unimpressive. Chuck by KO in round 1

This is a good comeback fight for Chuck, easy opponent that he will most likely KO in the first round.

Dude Anderson had like 4 fights in Pride, he made his name in Cage RAge! I’m pretty sure they test. Anderson was not very succesful in Pride 2 and 2 I think. You must admit the argument is there. With the exception of Rampage and Nog (the only true pride guys with any success in the UFC) the rest to step foot in the cage have looked like amatuers compared to the UFC fighters. BJ fought King of the Ring and Rumble on the Rock, not Pride.

So if Thiago Silva wins is he going for a title shot? I hope so…he’s young and very marketable to the average UFC fan.

While I agree that Shogun didn’t look his best, I don’t understand the apparent double standard that seems to apply to Shoguns detriment. Forrest walks around much bigger and stronger than Rua, as does Coleman. When Forrest cut weigh, the furor was over how much stronger a cut Griffin would be for Rua to contend with. Yet when Coleman cuts weight, it’s claimed that he must be weakened and it’s to Rua’s favor. When over 40 legend Randy fights, if anyone gets a glove on him they are annointed a hero. While when over 40 legend Coleman fights, if he isn’t devestated, the opponent must be a putz. While Coleman didn’t fight recently, does anyone recall that his most recent fight against none other than Fedor, he dominated and gnp’s Fedor until Fedor turned an arm bar, fortunately for him, and that’s Fedor, a heavyweight. I think the fight commentary by Joe had alot to do with this wave and would have appreciated a more balanced approach, such as Frank invariably presents. Just stop frame the begining ref instructions in this fight and look at these men shoulder to shoulder. Coleman’s shoulder towers over Shogun, is much thicker and muscular and his body much stronger, a different level physique to contend with. While Rua tired too easily, undoubtedly, he should get some credit for beating Mark Coleman, and looked one hell of a lot more in control and taking less pounding than Fedor did (again, short of the final arm bar). Shogun’s capable, and seems to have the ability to take fighters out of their game, so we’ll see.

If Chuck Lidell calls him self a kickboxer then why doesnt he fight the “Real” Iceman Fred the Iceman in a kickboxing match. We all Know you were a champion in UFC and a good one but if you are claiming to be a kickboxer step up to the plate and fight the man in kickboxing Fred The Iceman. Lets make the match happen and settle once in for all who is the real Iceman in the kickboxing world, even when Fred the icemans leg came off in a motorcycle accident and had 4 reconstructive surgeries and they wanted to amputate but he refused and 14 months later he fought again and won by ko in the second round with leg kicks at 44 years old so bring it Chuck!!!!!
