UFC Quick Quote: Dan Henderson on beating the poop out of Rich Franklin

"... I think the smack talk people are talking about was taken out of context. I said that if he was beating me in the stand-up then I would take him down and beat him up on the ground.... I want to beat him up on the feet and then beat him up on the ground. I’m going to keep him guessing and mix it up but I don’t really see his being south-paw a problem."
-- Dan Henderson (via The Mirror) clarifies the remarks he made about beating the shit out Rich Franklin at UFC 93: "Franklin vs. Henderson" at The O2 in Dublin, Ireland, on January 17. "Ace" had an amusing response in the UFC 93 "Countdown" show, which you can catch right here.

He could have said something like “I want to eat his children,” but Rich has no children I think.

i don’t know if anyone has said this yet. i have a feeling that Rich is goin to win this by KO or TKO in the first round. i know this sounds crazy, but like i said i have a feeling…

I’ve been watching Hendo fight for a long time – something about him rubs me the wrong way. He’s got skills and toughness… but I can’t find it in myself to root for him. Maybe it’s because he’s been a sore loser his entire career?
I am 100% pulling for Rich Franklin in this fight and if he loses I’ll be as devastated as I was when Forrest tapped out Shogun.

I know exactly what you mean i am 100% the same. I don’t think he comes off too well in interviews and stuff.
I like watching him fight but don’t like him as a person.
Sure he’s bothered tho!

I also used to be a big fan of watching him fight, but when he opens his mouth, it turns me off! I hated the comments he made in the ring after he beat Wanderlei in Vegas!
Im going to break the Rich vs. Hendo fight for you guys down in a little bit. Let me go smoke an blunt and I will get to work on it!

john i posted a long one on the UFC 93 link in the bottom right corner of the page that i dont think anyone has read. check it out.

John, I already smoked so I’ll break it down for everyone.
Franklin is a South Paw with a Soft Jaw
Hendo has dynomite in both his hands (especially the right) and has arguably the best jaw in all of MMA since Nog was just TKO’d by Mir.
Franklin has a slight advantage in the techincal aspect of the standup game, and I suppose that he may have a better guard, but that doesn’t matter because Hendo doesn’t end up on his back.
I see Hendo winning this fight by KO!
I haven’t had an opportunity to watch the online countdown show yet, wish it was on TV. DVR’d the Primetime last night thought, maybe I’ll watch both after work.

NIce work Synyster!
VM: Last week I was leaning towards Franklin. Right now I am not so sure. If this fight were taking pl;ace at 185 lbs, I would have no problem picking Franklin….BUt at 205, I feel that Hendo is a Beast eand performs much better! Its no secret that he hates cutting weight. I re watched the Hendo vs. Rampage fight a couple of times the other night, and I was very impressed with Hendo. No way Rich could go 5 rounds with Page.
I see this fight going to a decision….and unless Hendo implements a lot of takedowns, Rich’s technical striking would earn him the decision.
Would I be surprised if Hendo knocks Rich’s Head off his shoulders, not the least bit….
No predictions offered on this fight!
WAR Shogun!

I dont know why you guys dislike Hendo….he is a top bloke as we say over here. I think you may have mistaken his attitude as he has such a dry sense of humour. Most of the time he is just having a joke but people dont see it.
As for the fight I got Dan by TKO or Decision. He will probably take a couple of shots from Rich on the feet but will get tired of Rich moving around and come after him and clinch then more than likely end up on the ground and finish him or hurt him thoughout the fight there.
I really like both of them but want Hendo to win this one bad so he can hopefully drop down to get at Anderson again.
by Ca$z on Jan 15, 2009 11:11 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Franklin will use his superior technical striking skills to pepper Henderson and frustrate him until Rich lands a big left to drop him. Then Rich will work some GnP until it’s stopped.

pw: Props to you for keeping the Cabana boy nickname alive! that was some of my best work! lol Its so fitting for Gurgel! haha
my beef with Hendo is that at times I feel that he comes into fights under trained! He seems lazy to me! Think back to the Yuki Condo fight, he was telling his corner how tired and under trained he was. I dont like that crap! When he is in top form, I love the guy….but I am sick of wondering which Hendo will show up to fight. He is a professional at the top of the food chain….act like it on a consistent basis. Thats why I never bet $ on Hendo and rarely even bet against him. Too tough to predict how he will look on any given night!

I completely agree with this post too. I can’t like the guy for some reason even though he is a great fighter. He is just such a bad loser.
by JJ on Jan 15, 2009 9:51 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
A bad loser???? Why because he made some comments about how he didn’t feel like himself right before the Anderson Silva fight? If I were him, I’d feel like I can beat Anderson in a rematch. Round One of Hendo/Silva was the best round any opponent had against Silva.
Can any of you “Hendo is a bad loser so I hate him” people name me one or two other fights in which he was a so called “bad loser”???? Also, its not like he disrespected Anderson in the octagon after losing the fight.
I mean, if you want to talk about bad losers, then you might as well bring up one of my other favorite fighters – Nick Diaz!!!!!

Yeah Rich is easier to like. All the heart of Dan, but little less ego, little better sense of humor, little better back story. I’m a Rich nuthugger. I want to see him get a LHW title shot at some point. Of course, the stupid Bisping thing is in the way. And I wish he would go against the UFC for once and refuse the TUF show.
by Punch You in the Ovaries on Jan 15, 2009 9:58 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
The last thing Rich wants to do is be on TUF again. I don’t blame him he looked out of place on the show. Not to mention the asinine advice he gave Matt Serra on TUF 4. But luckily for him he isn’t going to beat Henderson and will no longer have to worry about being a coach on that sinking ship.
by Kick you in your Tits on Jan 15, 2009 10:17 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, he wasn’t the best coach. I can’t say with certainty that Rich will win, but if I had to bet, I’d put money on Rich. I do believe that Dan will find Rich’s striking hard to deal with. And Rich is crazy good at standing up. If Hendo can’t hold him down and pound him out, Rich will catch him.

Of topic, but did anyone else think the way the UFC Primetime show was a strange way to promote a fight? The whole “BJ is f#cking around and not training” came out of left field, I thought. For us that have watched MMA for a while now, we know the history of this, but if I were a noob to the sport and watched that show, I be saying “why would I pay to watch this lazy guy from Hawaii get his ass kicked?”
Dana should have just said “don’t buy this PPV…it won’t be competetive.”
This event will get great PPV buys from the loyal MMA fans, but I think if they stayed away from that storyline and tried to make “both” fighters look professional, it would result in more buys from the new fans.
JMO.

by OJR on Jan 15, 2009 10:16 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
No I think they did a great job on getting people interested for this fight. If someone doesn’t know who GSP and Penn are then they probably don’t like MMA at all and didn’t watch this show anyway, so I don’t think this will deter them from ordering the PPV. If anything I’d say whenever I watch Penn’s training videos before a big fight, I like seeing how he is out of the workout as well as in it. You can tell Penn is relaxed and comfortable coming into this fight which could be dangerous for GSP. I’d say the view they provided in the episode allows you to feel like Penn is a real human being an not some crazy mindless fighting junkie . If anything I think they should avoid letting GSP talk and only show his work out, he is one of the most boring champs ever to exist. (but he is still great and I still like him as a fighter)
by Cogito Ergo Sum on Jan 15, 2009 10:20 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Totally agree with you Cogito. My wife’s words “GSP looks like a tool, I really like BJ now.” As far as taking a break, I really don’t have a huge problem with it. BJ has been training straight since before the Joe fight. I DVR’d so I missed if they had ant preview for next week, but I would assume all of that “vacation” stuff will be long forgotten when it shows how BJ is busting his a$$ and trying to time his training to peak on fight night. Also, lets see if he is laying around smoking and drinking, NO WAY. If you did see the preview, please let me know what it showed. Also, GSP looked a little nervous and upset in those interviews, not his normal self. Good or bad? Probably not a good thing if BJ can get him to fight an emotional fight.

Yes, but we are fans.
These types of promotional shows aren’t made for us…they’re made for people who are on the fringe. If I were on the fringe, that show probably would have turned me off.
The strange thing about it was that it was obviously staged (the whole BJ ignoring Dana’s phone call and stuff). I just don’t see how that scenario would get more buys.
by introvert on Jan 15, 2009 10:59 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
yeah I’m with you guys here. I thought it brought a lot of drama to the show. Kind of stupid really. They might have staged it. I dunno. But I didn’t like it either.

i dont think last nights show will hurt the event at all. it is kind of obvious that they are trying to make b.j. come off as the heel, but b.j. is making it easy for them to do that. imo he is really just trying to hype this fight up as much as possible. he always says these kinds of things before fights. the only thing i disagreed with bj is his assesment of gsp being a frontrunner. bj was the 1 ahead in the 1rst and gsp was the 1 who came back to win it. i watched the 1rst fight again for like the umpteenth time and have finally come to the conclusion that that fight was a draw. 1rst rnd to b.j.(no way it was 10-8) 2nd-even, 3rd-gsp, but since they rarely score even rnds in the ufc, gsp barley won. as far as last nights show went it wont matter to any of the hardcore fans, but the casual fans always love a hero vs heel fight. i dont think anything bj is doing anything( like taking a break in kona) that will hurt his performance at all during this fight, its all just editing. bj will be ready and so will gsp. i’m still as pumped for this fight as ever. cant wait!
by b.w. on Jan 15, 2009 11:20 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
So you thought BJ came off as the heel. Funny… My wife said the exact opposite. IMO, BJ comes off as charming and funny, while GSP looks like the angry serious dude who dances like a douche to lame French hip hop.
by BNF on Jan 15, 2009 11:39 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
BNF.LOL! different strokes for different folks. i dont think bj came off as a heel, but i think the show tried to portray him as one. i disagreed with the frontrunner comment, but wasn’t offended by it. your’e right gsp did come off as a bit lame in that nightclub, but i’m still leaning slightly towards gsp winning this fight. i think whomever people are picking to win this fight will view this show in different ways. :)
by b.w. on Jan 15, 2009 11:55 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
i should add that a b.j. interview is 10 times more interesting and funny than a gsp interview, but some of that has to do with the language barrier. fedor and a.silva give pretty bland interviews as well. as far as 1 fighter seeming nervous and worrried and the other coming off as cocky and lazy, i dont see that having much impact on the fight itself. the best fighter will win regardless.
by b.w. on Jan 15, 2009 12:05 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
For sure… This whole thing started because introvert said it made BJ look bad and what person on the fence would buy the PPV to see him get his a$$ kicked. My only defence to that is watching with my wife. She doesn’t care about MMA, but really enjoyed the show, laughed and really liked BJ. So now, she has an interest in the 2 personalties and will watch the fight with me because of the show. So much for that logic, introvert.

You want this to happen or this a real prediction I can hold against you?
by Punch You in the Ovaries on Jan 15, 2009 10:14 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t really care if it happens or not, but I feel that it will.
Not a huge fan of either Hendo or Franklin…I just think Hendo will be too strong in the clinch and take Rich down for some Gnp…pretty much at will.
Bisping couldn’t beat Hammill, and won’t beat Hendo.
As far as Silva goes…by the time this fight comes around, Silva will probably be bounced back and forth from 185 to 205 for a while and will most likely face some serious competition in those fights…that, and the fact that we have yet to see him fight an incredible wrestler like Hendo is. It would be tough to call, but if anyone is going to take the strap from Silva it will be Hendo. Going out on a limb and taking Hendo.

Jesus – do you even watch the fights you comment on? Henderson had ground control the entire first round and looked every bit himself. He got caught with a knee in the second round and that was what did him in.
Henderson looked like he did in all his other fights only this time he got caught. I would love to see this rematch and would root for Henderson if it happens, but stop making ridiculous excuses for Henderson because you are not doing him or yourself any favors.

Finally we can agree on something. I think Hendo will beat Franklin and Bisping, im not so sure about Silva.
Silva is a much better striker, and his submissions look real good. It would be a better fight but Silva still wins that one I think.

Henderson would have to win by GNP as he did in round 1 of the first fight. I am sure Silva is aware of that so it won’t be so easy next time. Silva is better everywhere else so he would still have to be a heavy favorite, but I would love to see it!
by noneed4name on Jan 15, 2009 12:23 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
That was LNP that Hendo used in the first round. Hendo looked real scared of Anderson in that fight, IMO. I would like to see a rematch though, just cuz.

so when he had his hands over Silva’s mouth and was throwing punches, that was LNP? Hardly.
by noneed4name on Jan 15, 2009 1:40 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
When he got Silva to the ground, he ended up in some awkward, reverse half guard. For however long he was there, he didn’t try to advance his position AT ALL. You are right NN4N, he covered Silva’s mouth and threw little punches to the side of his head. That was IT! For some great wrestler Hendo is thought to be, he couldn’t, or wouldn’t, do anything to improve his position. I thought it was LNP, imho

…and I dont see how Hendo will be stronger that Franklin. Ace has had way more time to pack on weight for 205 and in one of the interviews or blogs, Hendo was at 199 and Franklin was at 210.
Franklin will be the stronger guy, just because he has had time to prepare for 205 while Hendo has not.

I am willing to bet whoever wants that if this fight goes to a decision, that Henderson wins. The UFC has very little to gain if Franklin wins this fight. Why would they want him to fight against Bisping? If Franklin beats Bisping, then what? Bisping is out of title contention, and Franklin then goes back up to Light Heavyweight? Now, if Henderson beats Franklin, then the fight between Henderson and Bisping has a lot more meaning. The winner will get Anderson Silva (assuming he is still champion) for the middlewieght title. The winner will be well-deserving of that title shot also. I have said all along that a Henderson/Couture like fighter has the best style of beating Silva. Henderson deserves a rematch and can beat Silva in my opinion if he could just repeat his 1st rd perfomance of their 1st match for the majority of the fight. Meanwhile, if Bisping beats Henderson (which won;t happen) then he deserves a shot against Silva. My point is that both the UFC and Franklin really don;t have much at all to gain with an Ace victory in this fight. Any thoughts???
