Programming reminder: 'UFC Primetime' debuts on Spike TV tonight

Finally ...
The much ballyhooed three-part series titled "UFC Primetime," which features an in-depth look at the colossal UFC 94 welterweight title fight between current champion Georges St. Pierre and former welterweight and current lightweight champion BJ Penn, will debut tonight (January 14) at 10:30 p.m. ET on Spike TV.
Episodes two and three will air on January 21 and 28, respectively.
Penn and St. Pierre have already met inside the Octagon at UFC 58: "USA vs. Canada" in 2006, which resulted in a controversial split decision win for St. Pierre. 'The Prodigy' brutalized St. Pierre for much of the first round, but 'Rush' was able to storm back and hang on in the final two frames to get the winning nod.
Most at the time felt at the very least it should have been a draw because of the lopsided opening stanza; however, the judges ringside did not agree. Regardless, it was a great fight and the encore will likely be even better since both fighters have improved significantly over time.
And that’s a scary thing to say -- these are two of the most gifted pound-for-pound talents in the sport going up against one another in the prime of their careers. Its historical significance cannot be overstated.
UFC 94: "St. Pierre vs. Penn 2" takes place January 31 live on pay-per-view from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada and also features the highly anticipated showdown between light heavyweight unbeatens Lyoto Machida and Thiago Silva.

I think more people are looking at this fight from an offensive stand point. I think BJ is the better striker as well as on the ground as well as many others. GSP is better Defensively, intelligently, at wrestling, athletically, and at speed. So if GSP doesnt allow BJ to do anything to him, and is most likely going to be twice as fast as him, I really dont see how Penn can win this one. This is will a very fast 1st round TKO won by GSP.

brutalized? draw? – well mania isn’t biased whatsoever. Won’t matter though when GSP is straight up assaulting him in the cage. GSP! GSP! GSP!!

Yesterday i mentioned a rummor KJ-Guillard***
It’s now Ronnys Torres vs Guillard. Ronny is a big balling prospect out of Nova Uniao so sorry guillard but you’re gonna get chocked.

Melvin is always getting strangled!
Prior to the airing of this episode tonight, there is a new episode of UFC unleashed, and the UFC unleashed at 11:00 (after gsp vs. Penn show) features Brock vs. Herring and BJ vs. Sherk

gsp certainly will not be twice as fast as bj, not close. bj is the smaller and faster man, faster hand speed, faster everything
by gobrowns on Jan 14, 2009 3:50 PM EST up reply actions
I believe Gsp is the faster of the two but to say twice as fast is a stretch. Bj fights in a lighter weight class against smaller, faster fighters. More like a 10-9 edge. A slight advantage to Gsp.
by Kdog on Jan 14, 2009 4:45 PM EST up reply actions
i agree with almost everything c-war. Except the BJ is better on the ground. They are both good and BJ might be more technically sound on the ground but I think GSP strength advantage will allow him to GnP BJ? Can’t wait to see this UFC Primetime!!

BJ rd. 3 TKO. I think with the improved gas tank BJ will be able to unload on GSP consistently until he buckles.

Yet another fan to add to the list. Should I make t-shirts now? Anyway, got the DVR set for this. Hope it lives up to the hype.

ya right saint pierre couldnt even finish fitch if penn would have fought fitch he would have destroyed him
by The Philicutioner on Jan 14, 2009 2:59 PM EST reply actions
I doubt that also. BJ is tough but I don’t see him being that much better or harder than GSP. Maybe with a submission.
by DDT on Jan 14, 2009 4:25 PM EST up reply actions
Some ppl also think BJ could defeat Lesnar
by Anger Jack on Jan 14, 2009 3:23 PM EST up reply actions
Hahaha,BJ would probably take a fight with Lesnar in a heartbeat.BJ is a crazy mofo. He’s a real fighter. He would literally fight anybody
by Flying Knee on Jan 14, 2009 3:55 PM EST up reply actions
LOL Instead of talking hypotheticals, let’s talk about fact. It took BJ 3 full rounds to finish Sherk, and GSP did it in 1 and a half.
by Pat on Jan 14, 2009 3:23 PM EST up reply actions
LOL at GSP’s demolition of Fitch being anything but amazing.
Fitch would murder Sherk. GSP did murder Sherk, in just over 1 round. BJ took 3 full rounds, and Sherk only tried a single TD the entire time. Penn would have his hands more than full against Fitch.
by Hardcharger on Jan 14, 2009 4:11 PM EST up reply actions
Thats because that fight was at 170. I dont know if Gsp could finish Sherk at 155 (at least not as fast). But then again I don’t think Gsp could get down to 155 and fight effectively.
by Kdog on Jan 14, 2009 4:49 PM EST up reply actions
That’s terrible logic. Sherk is the same fighter at either weight. His game doesn’t change. Penn took 3 full rounds to beat him. GSP ran over him like a semi.
by Hardcharger on Jan 14, 2009 5:03 PM EST up reply actions
Those were two completly different fights. In GSP and Sherk’s fight EVERYTHING significant happened on the ground and with Take downs. Penn and Sherk’s fight was soley a striking battle. GSP couldn’t TOUCH sherk with the stand up, he didnt land ONE significant shot to sherk while standing. Watch the fight and tell me otherwise.
by The Anomaly on Jan 14, 2009 5:27 PM EST up reply actions
I didn’t recall that BJ was not allowed to take Sherk down and TKO him or sub him.
GSP also got the better of Sherk standing, throwing off Sherk with his reach advantage (surprise) and his left high kick.
by Hardcharger on Jan 14, 2009 5:50 PM EST up reply actions
Hardly terrible logic. If Gsp cant make weight at 155 then Sean Sherk would beat him at 155.—- Its like me beating Lesnar at 155. I totally stand behind that statement because Lesnar would have to cut off a leg to get to 155.
by Kdog on Jan 15, 2009 1:37 AM EST up reply actions
So you’re argument is that you could hypothetically beat a 1 legged Brock Lesnar? Briliant.
Fact: GSP ran through Sean Sherk much quicker and easier than BJ Penn was able to do
by Hardcharger on Jan 15, 2009 9:57 AM EST up reply actions
let’s make a BJ’s hit list for you (he needs to prove is uber-awesomeness after the gsp victory):
Anderson Silva
Lyoto Machida
Brock Lesnar
Fedor
by Anger Jack on Jan 14, 2009 3:25 PM EST up reply actions
I actually think the exact opposite. I love both BJ & GSP but GSP takes it to another level in this one & we see BJ get totally dominated. I dont think there will be any doubt at the end who the best is.
by Spyder on Jan 14, 2009 3:05 PM EST reply actions
Only time will tell, both guys look determinded as hell, and I don’t agree with most who think penn wants it more, I bet gsp want to get revenge on someone who put him in the hospital and made him look bad. I’ve noticed the more shit an opponent talks the more aggressive gsp is with them, those who thing gsp will be tenative and cautious think again, I think he’ll come out aggressive and try to finish penn ASAP.
by nathan on Jan 14, 2009 3:09 PM EST reply actions
I really think gsp is going for the ko, maybe by knee’s or submit penn, crazy talk I know but penn won’t expect gsp to sub him, remember kos/gsp? It would shock me as well if either of those happened but would make the win that much sweeter. :P
by nathan on Jan 14, 2009 3:13 PM EST reply actions
That would mean that he would finish Penn and i dont see that, remember Kos/GSP . . .

I wonder how they’re going to stretch this out for 3 shows? does anybody have any ideas?

One on Penn. One on Pierre. One of them together?
by c-war on Jan 14, 2009 3:31 PM EST up reply actions
they spent 1.7 mil just on the production of this show. it will be very similar to the 24/7 series hbo did with oscar/floyd. they will go back and forth with showing each fighter in depth on all 3 shows. needless to say, it’s not gonna be yuor average run of the mill countdown show. cant wait!
by b.w. on Jan 14, 2009 4:04 PM EST up reply actions
I really can’t wait… I watch those 24/7 shows and don’t even care about the actual fight. If they can come even close to that I will be very happy. I can only imagine how much more excited I am going to get. Jan 30th I will feel like a kid on Xmas Eve, no sleep.

Honestly, After recently watching their first fight & the Serra Upset, I think GSP Should not strictly stand, He should use his take downs and pound, In the first match with BJ, George stood with him the first, got face tenderized, and then did the smart take downs & grinding out the victory, BJ’s Boxing is as good as the top guys in MMA, & and not to take away from GSP’s Stand-up, but I just don’t think that is how George can win.
by Ben Richards on Jan 14, 2009 3:35 PM EST reply actions
I predict GSP wins by murder. He will wear down then beat down penn.
by mooseknucks on Jan 14, 2009 3:37 PM EST reply actions
I’m as big of fan as anyone of this fight but I think BJ is a punk for challenging GSP because of personal vendetta. There are plenty of lightweight contenders in line that he hasn’t fought yet and he is moving up in weight? Furthermore, he is putting NOTHING on the line while GSP’s belt is up for grabs.
by bostonmmajunkie on Jan 14, 2009 3:40 PM EST reply actions
Cool, we’re just a couple of weeks away from seeing the big mouth Penn KTFO. Can’t wait!
by SilasM on Jan 14, 2009 4:04 PM EST reply actions
I would like to see penn fight alves, fitch, diego, koscheck and hughes for a third time I think it would be interesting. Hope to hell gsp send’s penn back to his division with his tail between his legs and I have to be honest, if that happens I can’t wait to hear what revjames13,((adamg))kevin etc etc will have to say. :P
by nathan on Jan 14, 2009 4:21 PM EST reply actions
There are some serious Penn nuthuggers out there. Penn will not only lose this fight but will lose his title to Florian.
by c-war on Jan 14, 2009 11:19 PM EST up reply actions
I can actually see that 2 .. I see GSP whippin Penn with some kness .. ala GSP vs SERRA 2 .. then 4 some reason I see Florian grinding out a win for the belt
by Jakob on Jan 14, 2009 11:40 PM EST up reply actions
I’ll be the first to proclaim GSP the #1 P4P if he beats BJ.
But when he loses, I will be curious to see how BJ’s detractors respond. Will there be excuses for GSP or will everyone just jump on the Penn bandwagon and say he’s the better fighter?
by revjames13 on Jan 14, 2009 4:41 PM EST reply actions
Bj would be more than willing to fight at 155 and put his belt on the line. I just dont think Gsp could make the weight.
by Kdog on Jan 14, 2009 4:52 PM EST reply actions
Ktown your a mad man. Wow revjames13 you actually used if he beats bj, seems like your making progress. I’ll never jump on the penn band wagon because I don’t like him, and would love to see him get the shit kicked out of him. It depends how the fight goes before I’ll declair him the better fighter, if it goes anything like his last 3 fights ya he would obviously be the better fighter, I’ll be the first to admit it. I seriously can’t see it happening, gsp is rediculously better than those guys. Fitch would destroy any of those guys and gsp destroyed fitch, penn has his work cut out for him, saying gsp has no chance is completely illogical. He’s techically better now, at least in bjj he’s now a black belt, penn has shown he’s has good conditioning at 155 and has yet to prove it at 170. Hello gsp has ALREADY beaten penn, and a smart betting man would predict a fight similar to the first one without the blood and a more decisive decision for gsp, logically. But I’ll be the first to admit also that logic and MMA don’t always go together which is why I say anyone who guarantee’s something in MMA is a fool, escpecially when two fighters of a very high caliber are fighting each other.
by nathan on Jan 14, 2009 5:08 PM EST reply actions
Can’t wait I give GSP 70% to Win. For Penn to win he will have to submit or KO GSP and regardless of who’s better in any given fight one little mistake can end your night. I think forrest fought a better fight vs Evan’s and ahead on the scorecard but one mighty punch and lights out. If Serra could do for sure BJ could?
by Beaver on Jan 14, 2009 5:53 PM EST up reply actions
Fighter’s dont get k0ed at WW as much as they do in LHW.

KO’d are submission’d. Yur probally right about this fight c-war and if you are I think GSP will win. But one guy that might change that in this division is Alves?

I like bother fighters in the ring…maybe a small edge to GSP but after this first Primetime it’s getting bigger. I hope Penn was just trying to sell more PPV with his smack talk? I hope now that GSP shut’s his mouth with his fist. Hopefully this brings out the angry GSP. Could be scary!
by Beaver on Jan 14, 2009 11:55 PM EST reply actions
Bj doesn’t only need to be taught an MMA lesson by GSP, he needs to be taught a lesson on being a man. Bj is a straight up spoiled little bitch.

I think that by showing BJ “slacking off” they are just preparing to have an excuse ready for the beat down GSP is going to give him, I know alot of BJ fans on this site will be using the old “BJ did not come in shape but if he did…”excuse
by jet99 on Jan 15, 2009 8:47 AM EST reply actions
A real betting man would take onto account all the necessary criteria, then throw it all on GSP. It ain’t no doubt about it. If you want the sport of professional MMA to positively move forward and grow, then St. Pierre is the front-runner man of being professional about it in and out of the fight. I cant’ see Penn being the face of anything, but being a Tito-like Shithead. GSP runs this shit.
