Marcus Davis vs Chris Lytle UFC 93 fight ... an instant classic?

Props: Sherdog.com

Quoteworthy:

"I think that this has the makings to be like the Griffin-Bonnar fight. I don’t want to compare anything to that because that fight was unbelievable. But that’s what I’m hoping we have. I’m hoping we have the kind of fight that people are going to be talking about not just at the water cooler the next day, but five years down the road…. We both know none of us have been knocked out in our careers and we’re going to put it all on the line for us, our families, our friends and the fans of MMA. We want to have one of those fights like Hagler vs. Hearns or however you want to look at it."

UFC welterweight Marcus Davis (15-4) hypes his upcoming fight against Chris Lytle (26-16-5) at UFC 93: "Henderson vs. Franklin," which will take place at The O2 Arena in Dublin, Ireland. this weekend (January 17). Davis and Lytle have both done their best prior to the fight to promise fireworks, which is a very real possibility considering that the "Irish Hand Grenade" and "Lights Out" hit hard and neither of them have ever been stopped by strikes in their respective mixed martial arts careers. That could all change in early 2009 … at least for one fighter. Will it live up to expectations and emerge as a an early "Fight of the Year" candidate?

I give the edge to Davis for his quickness, but I’m pulling for Lytle.

this will prob. be a 1st rd tko.. these guys can strike

by mikeybear2009 on Jan 14, 2009 11:34 AM EST up reply actions

Nah. Davis by decision. I don’t think it will be a good as they’re hyping it to be. I think it will be a good fight, but not FotY or even FotN. I think the Franklin or Kang fight will be fight of the night, if they go at least 2 rounds.

I think Davis will use takedowns, and Lytle will clinch alot. Maybe some good exchanges, but no KO.

Davis by UD.

by Synyster [[2009 Year of Gegard Mousasi]] on Jan 14, 2009 1:07 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed synyster, Davis will be the first to start diving for takedowns. But I got Lytle by UD or late late stoppage in the 3rd. I don’t think he will have enough gas to keep up like Taylor did.

I think it will end up just like Rampage/Wanderlei. Everyone expected an amazing war, but when two people hit as hard as they do, someone is getting knocked out. Same with this fight. Although I say Lights Out for Lytle.

It’s not gonna be FOTY but definitely worth watching.
I have a feeling 1 of the fighters will take it to the gound later in 2nd or 3rd round

by Anonymousf*ck on Jan 14, 2009 10:20 AM EST reply actions

Davis will but Chris like 2 standup 2 much.

by Gweedo on Jan 14, 2009 10:21 AM EST up reply actions

I don’t know, Davis is the one who said the first guy to go to the ground is a pu$$y

by O Damn he got caught on Jan 14, 2009 10:36 AM EST up reply actions

which is exactly what he should want his opponet to think

by Gweedo on Jan 14, 2009 10:43 AM EST up reply actions

IMO, thats good for Lytle then, his ground game is better than Davis.

by O Damn he got caught on Jan 14, 2009 10:50 AM EST up reply actions

u think so? I’m not sure. Delagrotte has done wonders for all the “Boston” guys

by Gweedo on Jan 14, 2009 10:52 AM EST up reply actions

I hope it is a stand up and bang war. The only thing I’m worried about is if all the pre-fight hype is dooming the fight to be just the opposite.

by El_Mexicutioner, formerly The_Mexicutioner on Jan 14, 2009 10:23 AM EST reply actions

This fight better be good with all the hype, but it seems like most of the talk is coming from Davis. That dude runs his mouth more than a teenage girl. I believe Lytle will stay true to his word to stand and bang, but I think if it goes down it will be all Davis.

by BNF on Jan 14, 2009 11:09 AM EST up reply actions

Stand up goes to Davis. His form is better. Lytle wings his jabs and cross punches too much. Lytle will have the edge on the ground, no doubt. Davis by decision.

by OJR on Jan 14, 2009 12:12 PM EST up reply actions

I feel that the difference in the stand up will be Lytle’s lack of defense. He likes to bang it out a lil too much, and leaves himself open for big shots. I dont know if he can afford to do that against Marcus.

If the fight goes to the ground it will be Marcus’s doing!

by john on Jan 14, 2009 12:20 PM EST up reply actions

Knowing Marcus personally, I think he is the last person you want to compare to a teenage girl!!!! Fight was awesome!!!! Both guys are classy as hell and have worked HARDER than any person who isn’t a professional fighter would ever understand to get to where they are today! Long live the Irish ‘MFing’ Hand grenade!!!!!

by Kiwi Girl on Jan 17, 2009 4:08 PM EST up reply actions

I think Chris will put Marcus’ light’s out by TKO. Don’t care much for either fighter but they can both put on a show.

by Graham on Jan 14, 2009 10:24 AM EST reply actions

what round?

by Gweedo on Jan 14, 2009 10:45 AM EST up reply actions

Davis by TKO in the 2nd, around the 2:13 mark.

Watch!

Pulling for Lytle, I think he’s the better all around fighter, IF this fight does happen to hit the ground Chris wins easy. Unfortunatley he won’t use his ground game cause of the 65k fight of the night bonus. I’m looking forward to this brawl, but starting to get the feeling someone’s getting their first KO in rd 1.

by O Damn he got caught on Jan 14, 2009 10:29 AM EST reply actions

I got mad respect for guys that fight to impress the fans. None of this “play it safe” garbage.

by JB on Jan 14, 2009 10:30 AM EST reply actions

no such thing as playing it safe in a cage

by Gweedo on Jan 14, 2009 10:44 AM EST up reply actions

See Starnes vs. Quarry.

by stevo on Jan 14, 2009 12:42 PM EST up reply actions

The reason Griffin-Bonnar was such an important fight was because it validated the TUF experiment and proved that those guys were legitimate fighters, not reality stars. Davis-Lytle should be an entertaining scrap, but they’re just a couple dudes. Nothing that will happen or could happen in the Davis-Lytle fight will even begin to approach Griffin-Bonnar.

by PW on Jan 14, 2009 10:39 AM EST reply actions

its like comparing apples to oranges, just 2 different fights that have different meanings

by Gweedo on Jan 14, 2009 10:46 AM EST up reply actions

Griffin-Bonnar was impressive at that time, it was a lot of Casual fans first experience watching an all out war, but putting it up against todays standards for a fight, it’s not all that; they both gased by the beginning of Rd 3, technique wasn’t the best but both showed a lot of heart, I’m not debating that for its time it was a great fight. But better fights had already taken place in Japan prior and better fights have taken place since. That fight just took place in the right place at the right time. Truth is we’ll be watching 2 fighters with superior technique and cardio to both guys we saw fight in Griffen-Bonnar 1 (not to say either is even remotley the same fighter today).

As far as garnering the attention that that fight did, or having people talk about it as long as they will Griffin-Bonnar; I agree, this fight will fade a lot faster whereas Griffin-Bonnar will always have a place in UFC history as the “break out” fight for MMA. Technique/skill/cardio wise, this will be a better fight. Assuming someone doesn’t get decapitated in rd 1.

by O Damn he got caught on Jan 14, 2009 10:48 AM EST up reply actions

I agree with everthing you said…….Davis needs to calm down a bit comparing himself and Lytle too Hagler vs. Hearns..both guys are legends in the sport of boxing and this is MMA! 2 different sports.

I watched both Lytle’s and Davis’ last fights. Davis is a very accurate and efficient striker. His leg work and head movement is excellent. Lytle, on the other hand, tends to throw loopy punches leaving himself vulnerable.

During his fight was Paul Taylor, Lytle looked sloppy and gassed out early.

When Davis fought against Paul Kelly, he looked very shop, very aware, and even though he didn’t throw a ton of punches, he avoided everyone punch thrown by Kelly.

Also take into consideration that Davis has an ever-improving ground game.

I really think Lytle will leave himself open, and after the first round when Lytle is gassed, Davis will land some clean shots either KOing Lytle or taking him to the ground and finishing it off there by TKO.

by J on Jan 14, 2009 11:19 AM EST reply actions

Agreed. Lytle is sloppy. He’s gonna get caught by a hard punch. He got hit a lot by Taylor, but Taylor has no power. Taylor hits everybody a lot, and doesn’t do any damage. Davis, Early 2nd Rd. TKO. Time to give this guy some respect.

by FCfightfan on Jan 15, 2009 1:41 PM EST up reply actions

Davis with a first round knock out. This will be the fastest fight you guys have seen.

by What? on Jan 14, 2009 12:09 PM EST reply actions

I see Lytle winning this fight by TKO.
Davis’ striking is crisper than Lytle’s, but Lytle’s is furious and non-stop, and I see him catching Davis with something that will rock him.
I can see it going the way it did with Alves (minus the defeat, of course) when Lytle pushed him up against the cage with a barrage of punches, although I see Davis either dropping or falling to the ground, where I believe Lytle will finish him.
