GSP via absolute beatdown. I just don’t see how penn wins anywhere.
by NameNotRequired on Jan 14, 2009 1:17 AM EST up reply actions
It actually does look like a British flag from that picture.
The actual Hawaiian flag does contain a Union jack of England following the invasion in the 1800’s. Hawaii actually used to have a solid Union jack until the British withdrew which is when Hawaii adopted the US flag and then the current flag which is a combination of the US and British flag.
DING Thats the school bell you can all go home now!
by Ca$z on Jan 14, 2009 7:19 AM EST up reply actions
I know….What I meant to say was “Union Jack after England’s invasion in the 1800’s”
Do I only get an A- now sir?
by Ca$z on Jan 14, 2009 9:31 AM EST up reply actions
Yeah, at first glance I thought it was the British flag as well. I figured it was probibly the Hawaiian state flag, but I’m not firmilliar with all the state flags.
by DB on Jan 13, 2009 9:51 PM EST up reply actions
well, if he’s got the hawaii state flag, then why doesn’t gsp have the province of quebec flag?

That was the best joke Ive ever heard!!! BJ winning, LMFAO!!! Ok, Ok, back to reality! GSP via what ever he wants!
by JV on Jan 13, 2009 8:58 PM EST up reply actions
ok JV, so if GSP wants to slapp a GOGO on BJ he’s just gonna go ahead and do it right…..come on guys, GSP has limited ways of pulling this off. BJ has far more options.
by Crowls on Jan 13, 2009 9:05 PM EST up reply actions
Yes he does Crowls! “Limited” LMFAO! That was another good one!
by JV on Jan 13, 2009 9:10 PM EST up reply actions
u like that huh?? GSPeePee Toucher is goin down.
by Crowls on Jan 13, 2009 10:41 PM EST up reply actions
I wouldn’t mind hearing the multiple ways you think BJ can win.
by MM_Eh on Jan 13, 2009 11:53 PM EST up reply actions
BJ:KO, TKO, Cut, Decision, and any variety of Sub
GSP:TKO, and Decision
BJ has never been knocked out, only TKO’d while not hurt after the gassing/rib scenario. I don’t think he’s ever been cut either, he looks untouched after every fight. BJ has never been submitted and GSP sure won’t do it.
by Crowls on Jan 14, 2009 12:25 AM EST up reply actions
Ummmm, I really doubt BJ will sub GSP, he didn’t even come close in the first one, and I think GSP’s wrestling and BJJ would prevent that from happening, remember it’s easier to fend off subs then to execute them. If BJ can get a cut stoppage, GSP can as well. Skin is skin. GSP has never had a really bad cut, so if you’re refering to the bloody nose in the first match, or the minor scapes he’s had over the years, I wouldn’t count on that ending a fight. Saying that BJ could win a decision is putting too much stock in his ‘new found’ cardio I think…this is a 5 rounder remember.
Just my two cents…I like both fighters, but I’m giving GSP this one.
by MM_Eh on Jan 14, 2009 12:47 AM EST up reply actions
i’m not fully sold on the cardio either but bottom line is BJ doesn’t need to blow a ton of energy defending the takedown. If he paces himself then he should have no problem taking the first 3 rounds on the score cards. I don’t think a cut will end the fight either, but i see bj posing more danger to GSP in more positions than i see the other way around. For instance, GSP poses absolutely no danger to BJ off his back. BJ does pose some danger to GSP off his back. And if u think you won’t see GSP in any bad spots on the ground in this fight think again.
by Crowls on Jan 14, 2009 12:52 AM EST up reply actions
Well judging from the first fight, I don’t think we will see GSP in any bad spots on the ground. Nobody knows how GSP is off his back, but that’s only because he’s never (rarely) there. He could be the next coming for all we know. I think BJ will have to spend a lot of energy trying to stuff takedowns, and I say trying for a reason because when GSP wants to take someone down, that’s where they are going to go.
I guess it’s a matter of opinion, and like I said, I like both fighters a lot (#1 and #2) but I just see GSP getting the W.
by MM_Eh on Jan 14, 2009 1:07 AM EST up reply actions
Crowls, when have you ever seen GSP on his back, for like 20 seconds in his whole career? He certainly was never on his back in the first fight and he won’t be in this one either.
by Jake on Jan 14, 2009 8:42 AM EST up reply actions
Can anyone explain why BJ is whering a UK flag on his back?
by GSP4Prez on Jan 13, 2009 8:54 PM EST reply actions
Nvm did not realize the Hawaii flag was so close to the British flag.

Brits colonized the hawaiian islands which is why the state decided to keep the brit flag in it. (8 stripes for the 8 islands that make up hawaii)

What’s up with BJ wearing the Hawaiian flag? You don’t see GSP wearing a Quebec State Flag. Put an American Flag on BJ for God’s sake

Great poster, IMO.
by El_Mexicutioner, formerly The_Mexicutioner on Jan 13, 2009 8:58 PM EST reply actions
It is the Hawaiian Flag. Although it looks very similar and carries a piece of the Union Jack flag, it is indeed the Hawaiian flag. Could have done better positioning though.
Not sure why GSP gets the National Flag and BJP gets the State Flag.
by Gogoplata on Jan 13, 2009 8:58 PM EST reply actions
Probably because Penn is all Hawaii’n pride, Hawaii as a culture is differnt and more specific a culture than to just say “American”, its not like a Quebec or Montreal or Canada are in any way different cultures.
Anyway, that’s my take on it.
by The Anomaly on Jan 13, 2009 9:02 PM EST up reply actions
Wait what, Quebec does not have a different culture than the rest of Canada? It’s a french province in an English country, right there that shows you that there’s bound to be a lot of cultural differences. I could literally do an essay on how the two cultures are different.
I think the reason why GSP has the Canadian flag is because GSP himself has always portrayed his colors as being those of Canada, and not those of Quebec. BJ on the other hand always talks about Hawaii and the pride he has of being Hawaiian, so obviously they’re going to put the Hawaiian flag on him. It’s simple really, when people think of GSP, they think ‘Canadian’, and when they think of BJ, they think ‘Hawaiian’. Voila.
by GrahfZilla on Jan 13, 2009 9:12 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah he only has the Quebec emblam tattooed on his leg!!!
by 1-0 via Arm Triangle on Jan 13, 2009 9:35 PM EST up reply actions
Actually, GSP already said in a french interview that he’s for the seperation of Quebec. But that doesn’t mean he’s not a proud Canadian.
That’s what many Canadians can’t understand…
anyway, politics!
and for the color of Quebec… we see the “fleur de lys” of Quebec almost everywhere we see his name so…
by Jee on Jan 13, 2009 9:40 PM EST up reply actions
cant stand coconut heads… hawaii this hawaii that, youre still part of america you douche’s… come back down to reality with the rest of us
by brendan on Jan 13, 2009 10:16 PM EST up reply actions
Jee, are you suggesting a lot of Canadians don’t like GSP on the assumption that he’s a separatist? I’m fairly certain GSP has always been fairly assertive in calling himself a Canadian, and not a Quebecer. Although yes, he clearly isn’t an English Canadian.
Either way, I’ll never let a fighter’s political views shadow my views of him as a fighter. GSP is in my Top 3. That being said, BJ Penn is still my favourite MMA fighter.
And I say this as an English-minded bilingual Canadian, born in Montreal.
by Dredg XI on Jan 13, 2009 10:16 PM EST up reply actions
I’d like to read this interview where GSP said he is “for the separation of Quebec”. I don’t necessarily disagree with your next point about that precluding him from being a proud Canadian.. but i’d like to read the interview nonetheless!

the anomaly, i’m guessing you aren’t from canada…
by JB on Jan 13, 2009 10:04 PM EST up reply actions
You are right. Hey when people corrected me I didnt argue back, I didnt claim I was an expert, was just under the impression there was no real cultural differnce between Quebec and the rest of Canada, and a west coast east coast style rivalry is not what I mean when I say cultural difference. However, I was apperently completly wrong?

so you trash Canada and than I make a point and you jump on me with “whats your point the past is the past” if its ok for you to say your piece should I not be able to say mine?
by jet99 on Jan 14, 2009 10:15 AM EST up reply actions
You said your piece did you not? and I questioned what your statement had to do with my statement… considering it happened almost 200 years ago. You obviously didn’t like my comment that nobody fears Canada (which is 100% true) so you made your comment stating that you guys used to beat the US when we fought with muskets and I say who cares? When we bring the muskets out again then maybe I’ll care man.

jesus thats one amazing poster, makes this event more epic i want it!!! i dont really have a person i can pick winning, its the same as the hendo fight. im leaning towards hendo and bj but gsp and franklin i can see winning too. that being said hmm i just want to see two good fights
by Jared on Jan 13, 2009 9:56 PM EST reply actions
For me, this poster just doesn’t do it!
Let alone the initial confusion many will have about Bj’s flag, but they have it set up as Country vs State!??
Also, they don’t have their belts and this is a history making fight between two current reigning champions!!
The belts should be there and BJ should have an American flag!
But really, who cares i just can’t wait to see this fight!
should be amazing!
anyone heard the numbers for 92 yet? Dana said it killed 91.
Also, lets not forget about 93!

BJ is one hell of a fighter, but since he comes off as a total tool I’m hoping that GSP destroys the SOB. I know Rush will win, but I want to see destruction. GSP by TKO in the 4th.

I read something a while back that was very interesting. George said he was really working his Jits game, and that he is confident he can submit BJ. IF it was any body else other than George I would laugh my ass off at something like this. GSP became arguably the best wrestler in the UFC in only the past few years…so he didnt really “learn” wrestling until about 2 years ago. So what if, he decided to do some secret jedi ninja jits training, and gets straight nasty like he did with wrestling. Then comes out and ends up submitting GSP. That would make him the best P4P in the world. GSP is all about making a legacy for himself, he says it all the time. I could see him trying to do something like this. In his past few fights he has tried to outperform his opponents at what their best at. Take GSP v. Koscheck, for example. I dont want GSP to win, but i could see him attempting to do this. Even though BJ has out of this world jits, GSP coming out with nasty jits would probably surprise BJ to say the least. I think Bj expects a striking war with GSP..Im not saying they wont strike, but GSP might just drop some jaws if he submits BJ on the 31st. Think about it.

It’s really messed up how he is only wearing the Hawaii Flag and not the flag of the United States!!! WTF!!!
Should be USA flag! I hope GSP deforms him for such a diss to the rest of us who live in the other 49 states that supported him! Effing moron!

Don’t get your little werewolf panties in a bunch…. He’s a Hilo boy, that is where he is from and gueass what Hawaii is in the U.S. so it kinda says USA there. People walk out with Texas flags, Mexico Flags(when they weren’t even born there) and etc…. did you cry then?

GSP will destroy Penn. The first fight wasnt as close as the biased Joe Rogan would have you believe. The only reason it might have looked close to some people was because BJ poked him in the eye twice making his eye swell up and bleed. Penn is a dirty fighter who shows no respect to his opponents before, during or after fights. I cant wait to see GSP knock him out. GSP is twice the fighter he was back then and BJ would be foolish to think he can stand with him now. Penn’s only hope will be a submission but he will not even get the chance because he will be too busy eating leather. It could be a bad year for BJ because i think Florian ( who is big for a lightweight )will probably take his lightweight belt from him via KO as well. BJ Penn is the most overrated fighter in the UFC.
by mike on Jan 13, 2009 11:00 PM EST reply actions
Yeah round one was only 10-8 round for B according to one judge, Joe had a lot to with that.

florian big for a lightweight? are you crazy? the guy could easily be 145. easily.
by Andrew on Jan 14, 2009 9:33 AM EST up reply actions
Strength- Gsp fights at a heavier weight and is bigger. Bj has fought at 185 twice and won. Fighting at 170 shouldn’t be a prob. Edge Gsp 10-9
speed- Gsp is explosive.Bj has been fighting smaller, faster fighters. Edge Gsp 10-9
Wrestling-Gsp outwrestled Kos. Bj showed that crazy split/spawl in Hughes 2. Edge Gsp 10-9
Cardio- Gsp went the distance against kos & fitch. Bj seems to be training seriously. Edge Gsp 10-9
Boxing- Freddie Roach said Bj has great boxing. Gsp overwelmed fitch in the standup. Edge Bj 10-9
Flexibility- Bj’s flexibilty is better than most fighters. Edge Bj 10-8
Jiu jitsu- Bj won the world championship. Gsp just got his black belt. Edge Bj 10-9
Focus- Usually a fighter that has a chance to avenge a loss is the one that wants it a little more and Bj seems focused. Gsp is a professional and will be ready as well. Edge Bj 10-9
Overall a slight edge to Bj but its so close, it could go either way.
