Ive never seen or heard of yvel but he seemed to be great at one point? a total psycho? anyway this promo is brilliant and i want to see this fight so much as Barnett looked good laa=st time he fought.

Agreed. Also, with all the training that Barnett does, you would think he’d be able to get rid of that spare tire. I guess its just genetics.

Matt Serra is saying that the Hughes fight will go down May 23

I don’t know about you guys but I couldn’t possibly be less interested in Hughs/Serra
by McArthur on Jan 13, 2009 9:51 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
If they make Hughes/Serra the main event, I will not but the PPV for the first time in probably 5 years.

I’m interested in this one; I really don’t like Hughes so I’ll watch for the chance that maybe Serra puts a good beating on him and sends him into retirement for good. Either way, I think this will be a measuring stick for Hughes; if he loses it’s probably a 100% chance that he’s done. If Serra loses there’s always 155, and at that weight I think he can be competitive. WW, is too much; win or lose he should drop to LW, I can’t imagine what Thiago Alves vs Serra would look like, like a LW vs a MW.

lol at imagining Alves vs Serra. I don’t like Serra at all (Matt Hughes has always been one of my favorites), so if he manages to get by Hughes, and stays at 170, I’d LOVE to see Alves whoop up on him. Not gonna happen though.

If its the main event, I wont order it. But I always enjoy matt hughes getting beat up and I like to root for my fellow Italian, Serra! But if this fight were to never materialize, I could care less

Known dirty fighter or Josh Barnett? i choose known dirty fighter. I can’t stand Barnett, i see him in the same light as Pee Wee herman; both are f’n weirdos.

I’m not a big fan of Barnett either. Dunno why, I just don’t like him. Unlike some others though, just because I don’t like him doesn’t mean I don’t ever want to see him fight ever again.

barnett has had some trouble with good striker’s in the past (cro cop, rizzo) so this could be a competitive fight, but im thinking barnett by kimura round 1 or 2

I think the size and wrestling ability of Barnett will be too much for Gilbert to overcome. Josh likes his leg locks so I think he will end it with one of those. He is going to want to show off against an inferior opponent.
Imo, If Barnett were in the UFC today. he would easily become the UFC Heavyweight champion.

i co sign that. It’s funny cuz Dana doesn’t even ackowledge Josh Barnett. The weakest division in the UFC is the HW. I don’t care what.. and whom will try to tell me other wise.. but the cream of la cream of HW’s are non ufc. They have Nog.. and the super universal solider in Brock.. and some tuf.. and young and up and coming fighters.. but if Fedor, Josh, AA, Roy nelson.. and some other dangerous cats out there.. then the UFC would have the best stable of HW’s on the planet.

Ahk, I agree with everything except for Roy Nelson; I’ve never been impressed with him or Rothwell; the only IFL guy that ever impressed me was Chris Horedeci, or however you spell the young guys name, I see a serious top contender in the future in that kid. Nelson definatley needs to drop some weight, he might be “in shape” but no one can tell me that useless excess fat isn’t seriously hampering this guys potential.

I liked Horodecki in the beginning – but he became too much reliant on decision vistories – also too 1-dimensional – no BJJ or wrestling game
by Anger Jack on Jan 13, 2009 11:20 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
yeah Phil…anyone with a clue knows that the uFC HW division is weak, and it always has been. It NEVER had the best hw’s.
Horodecki is the M’fin man!
War Polish Hammer!
I would give my left nut for dana to squash his beef and sign Barneet!
Barnett vs. Brock would be badd ass
and I want to see the rubber match between Nog and Barnett
Also a rematch of Couture vs. Randy!
by john on Jan 13, 2009 11:41 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
i agree john, barnett would beat any ufc hw. and the ifl had some other good fighters i like chris but i would take the miller bros over him and fabiano is good, nelson and rothwell are good hw’s not top tier but could do good in the ufc except for maybe there top 3-4 guys.

I think you mean a rematch b/w Couture and Barnett.
And a rematch b/w Nog and Barnett would be fireworks (with Barnett smashing an old and tired Nog).

I agree with your comment about Barnett, I have been saying that for a long time. He can take a hell of a beating and still get those submissions in. I was amazed when I first saw him way back fighting Semy Schilt. Mir is not in the same league as him. He needs to take this fight to the ground and not think that just because he knocked out Peddro Rizzo who was way past his prime, that he has the skills needed to take out Yvel in the stand up. He may have the power but he shouldn’t take the chance as Yvel is a very dangerous all round striker.
by Ade on Jan 13, 2009 9:46 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yvel has no business fighting, I can’t believe the athletic comission gave him a license.
Barnett ought to get a tetanus shot and invest in protective goggles…
by MattNY on Jan 13, 2009 8:58 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Yea no doubt; I got sick of this guy in Pride. IMO there is no way Barnett keeps this standing; as soon as he eats a combination from Yvel the wrestling instincts will take over and he’ll end this fight on the ground. I don’t care how much submissions/wrestling work Yvel has done he is light years behind Barnett’s ground game. Though I will say that with the way Affliction is going they need more draw’s and building up a KO artist/controversial fighter like Yvel wouldn’t be a bad idea; just put him up against lesser comp/primarily strikers and at least compile an Affliction highlight reel.

I still predict affliction goes out of business in ’09

I don’t know. For some reason, my spidey sense is telling me we might see an upset here.
by JB on Jan 13, 2009 9:14 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
He (Josh Barnett) has a good wrestling base.
He used that (and ROIDS) to win the UFC Heavyweight Championship.
Just correcting the Yahoo Sports guy’s comment.
Not saying that JB is not a good or even great fighter. Just saying that doesn’t ROIDS negate a win, whether it’s for a belt or not? He was stripped and kicked out of the UFC because of cheating with ROIDS. I don’t see why people still claim he was the UFC Champ, when the win should have been voided due to the chemical enhancement.
Anyway, 2 cents.

Every time I see Tom Antencio comment on fighters I feel ill. I respect the guy for what he is doing however I do not think he should be commenting on fighter skill or fight outcome. It just looks like he is doing it because Dana does in his promo video’s.
Barnett by brutal G n P Round 2.

Yvel had a 2W – 8L Pride Record … I thought he did better than that … Hurricane my ass .. more like light Southwesterly coming off the bay.
by DownUnder on Jan 13, 2009 2:09 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
JB will destroy this ogre. Yvel will kick him in the jewels or bite his hand or something once he starts getting his a$$ handed to him. Then Dana will sign him to meet up with Brock, if Dana can’t get Fedor or AA if AA beats Fedor.
Dana likes money, steroids??? what steroids?
Barnett is a great fighter who can take a beating, and the submissions are excellent for a big man. JB and Fedor in the cage would be a great match.

I’m a little surprised at Barnett saying he intended to come out and bang with Yvel, unless it’s just an attempt at deception. There’s one thing I appreciate about Gilbert Yvel, and that’s his striking ability. Don’t get me wrong, at times his behavior in the ring has been deplorable, and his striking is really about the only thing about him I can like.
If Barnett actually keeps it standing, it would be pretty entertaining. I don’t know why he would do that though, a stand up fight is about the only way Gilbert has a chance of winning.
by Scott on Jan 13, 2009 4:12 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
He might though cause I think Gilbert has a glass jaw. He got KTFO by a left hook in Pride.
