Adios! Roger Huerta passes on UFC contract to chase Hollywood dream

Sherdog.com has the scoop:
"I saw that you have to dedicate as much as you do to training for a fight as you do for an acting role and I’m intrigued by that. I’m 25 years old. I see Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture and they didn’t really hit their primes till their thirties. I’m only going to be young so long and I know that movies and agencies and what not want the young look.... The UFC is my home and it is my family and eventually I’ll come back. Pursuing the modeling and acting thing, that’s kind of where I’m at right now. The fighting will always be there. I’ll always have that in me. The truth is I’ve been fighting my whole life for everything, and this to me, is something else."
Former top lightweight title contender Roger Huerta talks about his fighting future in this recent interview. "El Matador" apparently did not re-sign a contract extension as MMAWeekly.com incorrectly reported back in December. Huerta most recently lost a unanimous decision to Kenny Florian at UFC 87: "Seek and Destroy" back in August 2008. He will honor the last fight on his contract before bolting to the silver stage.

roger you tool get back in the octagon you are a good fighter and you can bang Arianni after each win. Come on dude you arent going to get any major roles nor will you get some marquee modelling job. There are other people!! COME ON STAY FOR ARIANNI!!

His next fight will be against Sean Sherk. I can’t imagine the UFC to happy to see their latino sensation go so they might try to cut him down before he leaves. I wouldn’t mind seeing that match tho so I can’t complain.

hmmm, well then more power to him i guess..roger’s a good fighter but his heart isn’t for mma 100%,better this way than fight top fighters half-heartedly..

Good for Huerta! only hting is his career was on the rise…hard to get back to where he was if he takes a lot of time off
by john on Jan 9, 2009 8:27 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
The UFC made him famous, if he put more of an effort as a fighter than he’d be making tons more money. There was a huge market waiting to be tapped, Mexico! He could’ve led the way but now we got Cheeto Ortiz.

His last fight is against Spencer Fisher, I hope the King KOs him. poetic justice haha

ehoglund: Is that true? Is he really fighting The King? If so, so you know at what event?

UFC 96 and at that event we will see the return of the Barbarian.

Chuck is headlining i think. This should be a pretty solid card, its got a lot of fighters that are on the bubble and need to win to either stay in the UFC or to really progress their career.

ehoglung – please tell me you have more info on my boy Tim Boetsch. Also i got the King by UD.

Besides the fact that he is going to face slam his opponent. He is fighting Jason Brilz, and i have never heard of him. Also Neil Grove is fighting Justin McCully in his UFC debut at 95. I think we may see a KO by grove or a sub by mccully, but i am pulling for Grove.

Brilz is on a 12 fight win streak which he won his debut agaisnt Brad Morris (never saw this fight though)

Yea i know brilz midwest guy- good wrestler. He was on the omaha card. I agree boetsch will have too much power for him. The barbarian is one of my 09 fighters to watch.

Yeah i really hope that he goes far, he is a monster. I like his style too, a lot of push kicks and the knees. It was unfortunate he didnt show better when he fought hammil
by ehoglund on Jan 9, 2009 3:22 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I actually really like his performance with Hammil. The elevation killed his cardio though which resulted in the loss. Everyone else on the card was dying too so i don’t hold that performance against him. He also has the best entrance music – The Anvil of Crom.

True, and i do remember the altitude effecting everyone and i wouldnt hold it against him. I think he also took that fight on a couple weeks notice, so i actually give him mad props. I wonder when he is going to a bigger camp and who it may be.

Hey Mike D, i gotta disagree. Just because Roger could have been the fighter that brought the UFC, ultimately it is Dana White that will reap all the rewards. Huerta can bust his ballz fighting in Mexico for maybe $60k a fight, but i think he is smart enough to know that Dana will be raking in millions so whats the point. They already had a disagreement about a damn lunch allowance. Let the kid do whatever the hell he wants. It’s his life to do with whatever he chooses. but i can almost guarantee that if he fought say 3 times a year for his UFC pay and had a 3 decent roles in a movie in a year.. well let’s just say that Hollywood pays better than Dana.

can’t blame him for making that move… he has good character, he’s good looking and he has the oppurtunity to make big money but i just don’t see him coming back and being a contender. i think this is it for roger

Sherk would be what everyone wants to see, but i bet the ufc will give him a new guy, or just some shit guy like they did to arlovski when he left.

Spider, I don’t see him having 3 decent roles (hopefully he’ll have success for his sake). I just saw a lot of potential in his fighting career, I thought he would pull a GSP and throw a brick or something. Ahh well

Roger isn’t fighting in UFC 96. He said himself he would like to fight in UFC 97 in Montreal….that’s the card he’d like to get in on but he hasn’t decided when his last fight will be. either way more power to him in whatever he decides….i’ve known him since he was younger and if he sets his heart to do something he’s going for it no matter what anyone says….God Bless Roger in his Future but I will definately miss seeing him in the octagon.

Man, I don’t blame him at all. If he wants to try something else, I say go for it. But, I wouldn’t stay away for too long as careers of the lighter weight-class fighters do not last as long as that of the heavier guys.

Don’t get me wrong. Arianni is smoking hot, but if he actually becomes famous w/ this acting stint… he’ll be banging the Cameron Diaz & Meagan Fox’s of this world. It’s a no brainer. Definitely upgrades in my book.

100% agree, if I could choose between being a fighter vs being an actor, I’d choose acting, but that’s what I’m saying, not everyone has the heart for being a fighter, some ppl may choose to be a fighter because of all the glory and recognition, it’s a harder lifestyle but it’s paid more by the Pride they get than the money they receive.
by caveira on Jan 9, 2009 8:03 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs

doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know there is MORE money in acting than there is in fighting, doc… now, if he’ll be a good actor and get paid like one is a different story.

Who here honestly thinks Huerta will make it as an actor?? I definitly dont… I bet he spends more time asking people if they’d like a refill then actually rehearsing lines. Just like fighting, acting takes a certain amount of skill and Huerta is not gonna be the next Antonio Banderas so he should stick to what he’s already semi-good at.

My heart would totally be with fighting cause I’m one competitive sob, but can you really blame Roger? I say my heart would totally be with fighting, but I haven’t had to fight my entire life (hell i’ve been in one fight and we prob. looked liked girls) like Roger has. Most of don’t even know what it feels like to be hit in the face and those of us who have know what it feels like, I don’t think we’ve been hit by anyone like him.
Rogers a pretty boy and its not hard to see why he’s making this move, but I don’t think he’ll make it into anything really big, maybe a few magazines but nothing huge. I totally expect Roger to be back fighting 2 years max. The love for fighting will never go away, plus I’m sure some of his training partners will be bugging him to come back and we’ll see him back sooner then later.

Well, I respect his decision! He’s definitely proved he’s a good fighter! I’m surprised he didn’t make a last good run for the title. But, even if he won every fight from now on, that could take a long time just to get a shot. Unfortunately, if he does return to MMA after Hollywood, he’ll most likely be only a shadow of the fighter he is now!

He’ll make a few dopey, straight-to-video action flicks and then flame out. He’ll then come crawling back to the UFC. The UFC will welcome him back with open arms because of his raised profile from his “movie” career.
by Ernesto on Jan 9, 2009 1:08 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Nice career move. More money, less pain and creating a much bigger name for himself outside of MMA. He is extremely marketable and using his existing fame has set him well on his way.
Also, he is never going to be Champ while Kenny and BJ are around, so why not waste time and try and beat them at their prime … come back when they are on their way out.

Roger Huerta is not a household name, there are casual fans out there that know Chuck/Fedor/GSP/Silva(pick one) but would not know the name Roger Huerta so Im not convinced of his present fame at this point. I will admitt in the world of MMA he is somebody but outside of it he is not, we will see personally I think he would ahve a better chane getting famous fighting to become champion, maybe he knows he wont be.
