Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson: Guns are scary, Wanderlei isn't

Props: Sherdog.com
Quoteworthy:
"Wanderlei has a problem. Back in the day he wanted everyone to be afraid of him. You guys don’t know the behind the scenes. Fighters were afraid of Wanderlei in Japan and Pride. They were scared to be in an elevator with him. They were scared to eat next to him in the hotel or the restaurant or something like that. I was one of the few guys that wasn’t afraid of him and that’s why he didn’t like me. I’m from the streets. I ain’t afraid of no man unless he has a gun in his hand."
Former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson talks about trying to co-exist peacefully in a universe with Wanderlei 'The Axe Murderer' Silva now that the two former PRIDE warriors are together again in the UFC. Jackson recently defeated Silva via crushing knockout at UFC 92 to avenge two previous losses to the Brazilian back in Japan.

Rampage couldn’t act scared. When he first went to pride they made him out to be some homeless black street fighter. Like Kimbo but his was all image. You know how those asians love freaks.

When Wandy was fighting Guy Mezger.. that Wandy was a bad bad man.. The axe murderer was and still is a great title for him..
Wandy’s stare downs.. are serious.
I hear what Page is saying though..
Wandy is just a scary looking dude.. I would fight him.. for only a million+.. a round.
I’ll make sure I’l take as many shits as possible before getting into the cage with him.

Lol Phil re the shits!!! Yeah think my arsehole would be quivering too.
Don’t care what Rampage says, Wand is a scary dude.
Scary doesn’t mean good tho, cause so is kimbo, go figure.

This is only a part of the Sherdog piece. The Rampage/Wanderlei “animosity” is old news now.
I have to laugh when the press conference/weigh-in turns “violent”. Like that isn’t staged. It’s like a pose-down or a contract signing in the WWE.
by Graham on Jan 8, 2009 10:20 AM EST reply actions
Don’t know if you read the whole interview but Rampage said “… whatever happens i’ll just keep on trucking…” bad choice of words Quinton.
by Nick J on Jan 8, 2009 10:47 AM EST up reply actions
What are you talking about?!?! That was a fine choice of words! Perfect.
I only hope that now he’s got his truck back from the shop, they took his picture off it so next time he runs from the cops he’s at least anonymous to passers-by.
by Graham on Jan 8, 2009 10:49 AM EST up reply actions
I’m sure the reason he didn’t like Quinton is because he is a moron that used to talk crap about Wandy and in general rarely makes any sense when he speaks.

This is the same idiot that said he was scared when he got in the cage with Silva at UFC 92, but yet he was never scared of the guy in Pride. Moron.
by El_Mexicutioner, formerly The _Mexicutioner on Jan 8, 2009 12:04 PM EST up reply actions
Sorry, he said it was the “most nervous” he has ever been, but I guess fear of possible getting KO’d by Wandy like he had been twice previously didn’t have a role in that.
by El_Mexicutioner, formerly The _Mexicutioner on Jan 8, 2009 12:11 PM EST up reply actions
Being nervous does not mean that you are scared. There was a lot of pressure on Rampage to win. Who knows what would have happened to him if he had lost for the third time to Silva. A lot of self imposed pressure and a high level of anxiety will cause you to become very nervous. But that doesn’t mean that you have doubt or you are scared. I’ve never competed in fighting but I have competed at a very high level of sports and I used to get ridiculously nervous. I wouldn’t ever vomit but I would feel sick to my stomach and have a very hard time eating before competition.
by Adam T. on Jan 8, 2009 12:41 PM EST up reply actions
Fair argument Adam, but I’m more than positive that Quintons nervousness was from fear of possibly getting KO’d for a third time by Wandy. This was pretty evident in how he was when walking to the ring.
by El_Mexicutioner, formerly The _Mexicutioner on Jan 8, 2009 12:54 PM EST up reply actions
being nervous is something positive, being scared is negative.. he was nervous when he made his UFC debut against Marvin Eastman too, do you think he was scared of Marvin? no he wasn’t he was nervous because it was a must win situation and it was the same thing here.. you can twist his words to make it sound however you want to, but you could do that with every fighter..
by RoB on Jan 8, 2009 1:02 PM EST up reply actions
We don’t have to twist Page’s words. He contradicts himself all the time.
by OJR on Jan 8, 2009 1:35 PM EST up reply actions
I think Dana White is respnsible for reinventing the word Moron.
either that or this sites moderation has caused it LOL
by dia mette on Jan 8, 2009 1:40 PM EST up reply actions
Really, OJR. I’m waiting for the next statement to come out where he says he was never nervous during the third Wandy fight.
And RoB: how can he say that he is not afraid of no man unless they have a gun because he is from the streets, but yet he is nervous (seemingly a lesser emotion than fear) from getting ready to fight a guy that doesn’t have a gun? Makes a lot of sense to me. Also, did you know Eastman had beat Quinton in Eastman’s first professional fight in 2000?
by El_Mexicutioner, formerly The _Mexicutioner on Jan 8, 2009 1:46 PM EST up reply actions
Nice comments Rob. I agree completely. I did, however, notice that Rampage looked different walking to the cage and the fact that he never stopped to howl had me going bananas. This could just be a new, more serious Rampage. But I have to admit that when I saw him walk in, I was worried for him simply because of what I mentioned above. Obviously those worries proved to be incorrect.
by Adam T. on Jan 8, 2009 1:51 PM EST up reply actions
Nervous and scared are different things in the fight game and most sports actually. You can be nervous because of performance anxiety; you want to perform to the best of your abilities so badly. That’s a good thing. If you can channel your nervous energy properly it’s a big positive.
Hell he admitted to being nervous before he fought Forrest and Forrest is not at all intimidating and he doesn’t possess crushing KO power. Nervous due to the pressure and magnitude of the occasion, not scared of his opponent. If you’re scared of an opponent you’re in the wrong line of work.
I think he said he’s been nervous before all but 2 of his fights actually.

ya i agree with that comment…. i can see alot of ppl not liking jackson just cuz when he speaks he sounds retarded. he’s a funny guy, but sometimes that humour gets very VERY annoying. i like him personally as a fighter, but as person he gets annoying with his comments that have nothing to do with nothing…. and its easier to say to someone i ain’t afraid of them after beating them, WAR WANDY

Agreed Adam. I fought amateur in HW and some of the guys just look like they can hurt you. But you get through the first couple minutes and you’re still there and you’re like, “This isn’t all that different from sparring and rolling in the gym” I think the fear though is more of losing in front of your team.

as much as i like rampage, i have got to agree with him here. i often felt that wandy was indulging himself in his self-importance over in japan; he didnt take too kindly to fighters who didnt show him a certain amount of respect, such as rampage and cro cop, and hence the beefs. that being said, rampage needs to understand that not everyone is as jovial and welcoming of his eccentricity as he may assume. calling wand out (all be it in a sportsman-like fashion) after beating randleman when wand is watching from ringside is just plain stupid and completely misreading how wand would respond.

I know what Rampage means….he isn’t scared of any man, but thats not the same as being “nervous” before the fight like Rampage said he was in the post fight conference. I can totally see Wanderlei acting like he’s some bad mofo (which he was and still is) and trying to make people afraid of him.
I saw an old pic online from Pride when Chuck was over there fighting and the pic is of him sitting next wo Wanderlei backstage waiting for his fight and hes throwing his Kempo sign and Wandy is just sitting next to him looking pissed off and mean muggin lol. Rampage is right about Wanderlei wanting people to fear him…..

All humans fear. It’s part of what makes us human. It’s controlling the fear is what makes us fearless. For those who are interested, search some quotes and philosophies of boxing trainer cus d’amato, who spoke extensively on fear and fighters relationship with fear. I’m a big fan of the subject and It’s something I think all fighters/fans can learn and benefit from.

I could see Wandy trying to punk ppl back in the day. i dont get how ppl are scared of other ppl for whatever reason.
by SluggerCitySoldier on Jan 8, 2009 11:57 AM EST reply actions
Nah, I don’t see him trying to “punk” anyone, there were definatley language barriers especially when you look at the variety of fighters in Japan: Brazilian, Japanese, Americans all sitting in this melting pot so to speak. In America they aren’t a big star unless they speak english and the people here can get to know them normally, with the exception of A. Silva, but back in Pride it seemed to matter a lot less. Well where I was going with the language anyway, was if you can’t understand someone its a lot less likely your going to try to communicate with them, and this could be misconstrued as some form of intimidation given Wandi’s already intimidating appearance. Add to that that the fight is in Japan, these guys are sitting around together maybe 1 week out or a couple days out from their fights! Their in the zone! No one’s thinkin about makin friends, their thinkin about knockin someone the F*** out.

I’ve been backstage at many fights and always before fights everybody is very serious. Game faces on. Mean muggin’ and everything. After the fight, that’s when everybody is relaxed, talking, laughing, and making friends. Before the fight is just a very tense time for everybody.

I can’t see why any top MMA fighter would be afraid of anyone. Ya silva’s ugly and looks weird but look at what just happened silva got KTFO, jackson knows he has that ability as do most MMA fighters. I really don’t know what goes on behind the scenes but maybe silva is a psycho or something, I don’t know, but like I said a high level MMA fighter should feel pretty confident in themselves.

UFC brawler ‘Rampage’ Jackson pleads guilty
High-speed chase in July left crumpled cars, scared pedestrians.
By LARRY WELBORN
The Orange County Register
SANTA ANA – Ultimate Fighting Championship brawler Quinton “Rampage” Jackson pleaded guilty today to felony evading police and misdemeanor reckless driving for a high-speed chase down Newport Boulevard last July that left a wake of crumpled cars and scared pedestrians.
Jackson, a former UFC champion and one its brightest stars, was ordered to complete 200 hours of community service, seek mental heath therapy, and pay restitution to the people whose cars he damaged.
Superior Court Judge Thomas Goethals said if Jackson, 30, successfully completes those terms, the felony charge will be dismissed against him and he will likely serve no time in jail when he is officially sentenced on Jan. 7, 2010.
Jackson, who said he was delirious from a lack of sleep and a lack of food when he launched the wild police chase on July 15, said he was ecstatic that he wasn’t going into custody.
“No one wants to get to jail,” he said after in an interview after pleading guilty. “But my main concern was that no one got hurt. I am so relieved and happy that no one was injured.”
He said he decided to plead guilty because he didn’t want to put the other drivers through the ordeal of a trial.
“I feel sorry for everything that happened, and I apologize,” he said.
Carol Lavacot, his attorney, said Jackson wanted from the beginning to take responsibility for the episode.
She said he will spend his 200 hours of community service speaking to youth groups.
“He has learned a great deal about his physical body and about mental health” she said.

Beside Rampage and Hendo, Wandy only beat japanese fighters in PRIDE. I don’t know much about japanese fighters, but they’re small guys. He lost the rematch again Hendo, lost against Arona, Hunt, now Rampage, lost the long-awaited fight against Liddell. And he would lose against Machida, Franklin, and Evans as well.
Plus the fact that many strikers soften up once they get knocked out. After CroCop knocked him out he wasn’t the same.
