Lesson of the day: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu>Rabid Pit Bull

MMA has really gone to the dogs lately.
Nine-year old Drew Heredia of Bakersfield California made a hero out of himself - and mixed martial arts - when he saved a 12-year old girl last week from certain death at the hands of a bloodthirsty pit bull according to a report by The Bakersfield Californian.
"Man's best friend" was having a neighbor's Dachshund for an afternoon snack, much to the chagrin of a pet-loving good Samaritan.
When the young girl tried to intercept, the malicious mongrel turned his fangs on the youngster's shoulder, prompting the nearby Heredia to jump into grappling mode and submit the mangy mutt via rear naked choke.
The Drewster kept the animal subdued for nearly twenty minutes until Animal Control officials arrived.
Once again, the evolution of combat sports puts MMA ahead of boxing. Unless of course any purists of the sweet (and ever-increasingly salty) science think Lil' Drew could have dropped the killer canine with a stiff jab.
Heredia recently started taking jiu-jitsu lessons with his mother, an avid MMA and UFC fan about two months ago at Bakersfield Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy in California. Drew had learned the choke hold and practiced it at home on his mother.
If that doesn't get her "Mom of the Year" award than I don't know what does.
While the girl suffered bite wounds, both Heredia and the troublemaking Dachshund were not harmed. The pit bull remains at an animal shelter until the city of Bakersfield can figure out whether or not it deserves a dirt nap.
Whatever the outcome, it's nice to see mixed martial arts getting some positive press for a change.

Thats actually pretty sick news, but plz ppl don’t think its the pitbull fault its THE OWNERS. im not gonna make this a huge deal but, pitbuls are one of the most loving dogs just brought up wrong owners that can’t handle the dog they’ll attack like everything else, just they don’t give up as easy as the rest.
i already put this in another thread but i must know the reason to how the cro cop vs hong man choi was stopped, i really wanna know if it was fixed or not.

Cro cop leg kicked him a few good times and Choi’s knee was really banged up. He might have popped his knee out, it looked pretty bad. It didn’t look like it was fixed.

That’s insane!!!!! Love the story!! I agree Ricky I had three pitbulls at one time before and no one was ever attacked by anyone of my dogs!!

You can’t ignore the fact that Pitbulls have the most deadly jaw of any dog…Plain and simple.
Most dogs would stop with a swift kick but once Pitbulls clamp down…That’s it.

Now is that there fault that they are incredibly strong and have a higher drive than most dogs?
As owners we need to take the responsibility for our dogs!

My Pitbull “Dollar” is a mONSTER!!! Most beautiful animal alive, weighing close to 100 lbs. Nicest Dog in the world only problem is that he gets jealous. When me n my girl try n go have sex in the bedroom, we lock the door and leave him outside. The entire time all he does is sit at the door, scratching it trying to get inside the bedroom. lmao…crazy but one of the most loyal loving dogs I have ever seen.

I have owned four pits.never had a problem with any of them.but trust me they are not the most deadliest dog trust me.If any one who know about exotic breeds then they would know canary dogs would swallow a pit whole.canary dogs is an island dog, basically a bigger, stronger, meaner, more athletic pitbull.most people confuse them with pitbulls.good job kid!

ViolentMike is back from his holiday hiatus!
People bad mouthing pit bulls is one of the few things that really get me going, as some of you already know.
I didn’t read the entire article that was linked, but where did this attack happen? Who’s property was it on? Which dog was not on a leash or tied up? That’s what I want to know. For all we know, the pit could have been tied up outside to go to the bathroom. Then the dashound could have been on the loose and started antagonizing the pit. Trust me, Pit’s instincts are NOT to attack other animals. Mine wants to play with every dog it sees and cried if he can’t get to him to play. He just got scratched in the face at my friends house cuz he wanted to play with the cat. Did my “vicious pitbull” eat the cat after it was attacked? nope. He was cool, as always.
Besides, 3 on 1 doesn’t sound like a fair fight. Plus the pit was blind sided. 1 on 1 against any of the 3, my moneys on the pit if he is provoked and not properly trained by its owner!!!!!!!!!!! LOLOL

Vm: w3elcome back my dear friend! U have been missed around here for sure.
I read the entire story this is whatr happened.
A little girl was walking her lil dog, the pit attacked the lil dog, the lil girl tried to save the pit and started being attacked by the pit as well. Some lil Jits kid came over and slapped a rear naked choke on the dog.
Like, u I am a proud pit owner and for the most part they are such amazing animals. Much love for Pits!
Jeff: What is it with these dogs that are jealous of a man’s girlfriend? lol… NOt sure who is more jealous: My dog of my girl, or my girl of my dog.
Either way, I like my woman the same way that I like my dogs….ON ALL Fours!

well John, it’s simple…the dog gets jealous when you’re banging your girl, your girl gets jealous when banging the dog!
welcome back Mike, hope all is well bro! How’s the wife?

My biggest pet peeve (pun-intended) is when dog owners have too much confidence in their pit bulls/Rotty’s/etc. and let them go up to complete strangers saying, “oh he won’t bite”. Owners need to realize that even though THEY are comfortable with their pet, other people may not be and it’s proper etiquette to put their damn dogs away when people come over to their house. It doesn’t matter how good a dog may be, If they smell fear from a stranger it could set them off, they are still animals and could turn into a raging force of destruction at any given moment. So I agree, dog owners need to start taking responsibility for their dogs.

I like pit bulls….well I care about all dogs! This is Drew’s mom and thank you to all of “you” who understand we too feel bad about the dog who do not get the love and care each and ever animal deserves! I hope all of the people who hear about the story “see” how important it is to learn BJJ and it is not a sport of violences. I thank God I feel in love with the sport of MMA, thanks to UFC:) I also hope this story will develop more MMA fans:)

What exactly was the point of taking a shot at boxing in this article when it had absolutely nothing to do with the story?
by prophet on Jan 8, 2009 12:57 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
its just saying that if he had been taking boxing instead of Jiu-Jitsu then the out come could of been different. besides lots of boxers take cheap shots at MMA saying its not a real sport. i’ll never forgot after the oscar del ahoya fight and floyd mayweather, when that old announcer was like “what everyone witnessed here today is epic, not something you’ll ever find in MMA”

because the average pit bull can stick and move, whereas they have a weak guard mostly due to the lack of hands.

Wow, What an amazing kid with amazing heart. This story really grabbed my attention because bakersfield is my hometown and I also used to study jiu jitsu and muay thai (at eric nolans academy). Eric nolan and Dan camarillo were great instructors but $80 a month is expensive for a college student. Anyways, this kid deserves a medal for his selflessness and bravery.

Thats a hero right there. In the proper context, MMA or BJJ training is great for kids. I wonder what John McCain has to say about that.

Good to see mma getting some good headlines but it makes me sad that i keep hearing about pitbulls like this.
I have 3 pitbulls and say what you want about them but MY pitbulls are some of the best dogs you could meet.
There are so many reasons people end up with these type of pitbulls, Buying one from a bad breeder, neglecting the dog, ignorance and then there is always the people that wants his dog to be mean.
Responsible owner = Good dog

I don’t know if the fat head of a pit makes it more susceptible, but I have 140lb Akita and it can get out of the rear naked. I can’t say that I’ve ever really squeezed it like my life depended on it b/c she’s a good girl, but I don’t know if this would work across the board. Maybe they should have BJJ Dog defense classes.
As for the Pit debate that always rages. Is it people’s fault? Yes, one for being slack or bad owners and two for breeding them to be violent. There’s a fighting mechanism in their brain waiting to be activated and unlike many other breeds their anatomy allows them to be higly lethal. My Akita’s the nicest dog in the world, but I never let my guard down with her around children and strangers even after years with no incident or even aggression for that matter. If a dog were to vilently attack my child, my compassion for animals is gone. And my reaction would be a lot different with a breed ike a pit. It comes with same responsibility of owning a weapon, even if you have the nicest little pupply in the world. When I think of an attack on my child, my compassion for animals is out the window. Dead dog and severely injured owner if it was violent breed with an irresponsible owner.
by Punch You in the Ovaries on Jan 8, 2009 11:11 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I used to have two Akitas, and they ate my next door neighbor’s two dogs and we had to put them to sleep. They had never been trained to be violent, but the damn neighbors little punk dogs kept coming into our yard and starting crap with my dogs. I wanted to shoot my neighbor for making us have to put them down because they were too lazy to keep their dogs out of my yard.
