Trainer: Gabriel Gonzaga will earn title shot with win over Shane Carwin UFC 96

From Team Link Lead Trainer, Marco Alvan, via BrasilCombate.com.br:
"Gabriel is in Brazil training a lot of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu where we believe will be the key to win this match.... It’s going to be a tough fight and [if he wins] Napao (Gonzaga) will have [earned the right] to face the winner of Mir vs. Lesnar. But we’re not thinking about that because we have to respect Carwin and we’re focused on this fight."
The trainer for former heavyweight division number one contender Gabriel Gonzaga feels that his fighter will get another shot at championship glory if he can topple undefeated heavyweight specimen Shane Carwin at UFC 96 from the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, on March 7. "Napao" failed in his first attempt to become champion, losing to Randy Couture via bloodbath at UFC 74 back in 2007. He is currently on a two-fight win streak after enduring back-to-back losses. He submitted Justin McCully with a first round kimura at UFC 86: "Jackson vs. Griffin" in July and then crushed an overmatched Josh Hendricks at UFC 91 with a first round knockout. It won't be so easy against Mr. Carwin. Not even close.

are they saying that they feel he will have earned a title shot with a win over Carwin, or they deserve a title shot?
I wouldnt mind seeing Brock vs, Gonzaga or Carwin for the title. tHose are some big boys.
Speaking of UFC Heavyweights:
Lesnar will spend time at extreme Couture training with Randy for his fight with Frank Mir. Dana said that he expects Mir vs. Lesnar to take place in April cause Mir suffered nO Damage vs. Nog and Brock wants to fight him really soon.
Also, Dana said he will welcome back cro cop with open arms. I have a feeling we might see Cro Cop fighting in the UFC in June at the Germany show. Makes sense. I wouldnt mind seeing Randy vs. Cro Cop in June. Mirko also said he would be ready around May, so the June Germany ppv is perfect.

i wouldnt mind seeing a rematch between Nog vs. Cro Cop in Germany either

Yeah definitely. That’s a nice fight right there. Hope it happens.

I’ve always wanted to see Liddell / CroCop and still do even though they’re both on the downside.
by Tyler on Jan 7, 2009 3:32 PM EST up reply actions
I wouldn’t mind seeing Cro Cop take on the winner of Nog vs Couture, but imo that fight NEEDS to happen first. Its wierd that Couture is training Brock, does this mean he has no intention of challenging Lesnar in a rematch should he be presented with that opportunity? I’m taking Carwin in this fight, not that I don’t think Gonzaga could beat Lesnar, I just wanna see Brock fighting someone his size.
by O Damn he got caught on Jan 7, 2009 3:34 PM EST up reply actions
So Randy is training Lesnar even though Lesnar just whooped him? Interesting. Like Lesnar wasn’t dangerous enough before.
by PW on Jan 7, 2009 3:41 PM EST up reply actions
He’s definitetly handling the cro cop thing correctly. The man, no matter how far he has fallen, has thrilled MMA fans for years and needs to good send off. I don’t wnat him to go out like Igor V. Brock and Carwin have a good chance against GG because -well Gonzaga quits under pressure.

Depends on how this fight goes, no ones ever made it out of the 1st round with Carwin, how much heart does he have? We know Gonzaga may/may not quit, but really don’t know much about Carwin’s resolve.

I really want to see Cro Cop back in the UFC, bring in Overeem too while your at it! I have been wanting to see Gonzaga vs Lesnar for a while now, hope it happens!!

I would like to see Overeem in the UFC but the steroid testing might present a problem for him.
by GregC on Jan 7, 2009 4:46 PM EST up reply actions
Crocop is having surgery and taking some time off. I have heard some site say 3 months and others say 6. He said he would like to have 3 more fights in DREAM and then a farewell fight in the UFC. The best IMO would be Nog/CC 2. That first fight demands a rematch.
by stevo on Jan 7, 2009 5:20 PM EST up reply actions
lame, what is he getting surgery on now? He just had knee surgery not long ago didn’t he?? Or did he put that off until now?
by O Damn he got caught on Jan 7, 2009 5:22 PM EST up reply actions
ODAMn: Couture training Brock wont be a problem down the line. THey would still fight if a rematch presented itself. Randy has had an open door policy when it comes to training with other fighters. For example: He trained with Tim Sylvia for a while but then ended up fighting. Randy would fight Brock any chance he gets, thats a Big money fight for Randy. Training together wont keep them from rematching down the line, but it will make Brock even harder for Randy to beat.
If Randy isnt careful he will create a MONSTER!

I had mentioned this earlier though, Drysdale is the BJJ coach at Couture as well as Mir’s personal BJJ coach. I don’t know how this might work.

I thought that Drysdale just opened his own gym. I doubt he’s training at his gym and at X-treme Couture as well.

by 1-0 via Arm Triangle on Jan 7, 2009 4:35 PM EST up reply actions
Is Nate really a breakout? I think he is pretty dangerous to any fighter in that division, save BJ.

by 1-0 via Arm Triangle on Jan 7, 2009 7:05 PM EST up reply actions
Anthony Johnson will make a big splash in 09, but I’m not a huge fan of his. Dunno why. And I wouldn’t consider Nate a breakout either. I was thinking Jim Miller, but I’m stuck on who I want to win between him and Gray. I actually like Maynard.
Ok so my WW will be Dustin Hazelet, and my LW will be Joe Lauzon (not really new guys, but I think they will burst onto the scene in their respective divisions this year)

May not sound right……But it makes perfect sense
by Psyqo78®™ on Jan 7, 2009 6:15 PM EST up reply actions
It makes sense because Couture has transitioned wrestling to MMA himself. He knows things that Brock could benefit from given his wrestling background.
by RyanHobbs on Jan 7, 2009 6:34 PM EST up reply actions
Some juicy news there JOhn…In any case, who do you think will win this one? The wrestler carwin, or the ground specialist Napao?
IMHO, BJJ right now is easily negated by wrestling. It seems like it’s happening all over again. You know, like in the MMA dark ages, you must have BJJ.then the wrestlers arrived like Randleman and Tito…Then again, as we speak, it seems that wrestling is a must have to succeed in MMA. Makes sense because if you’re good at wrestling, you won’t be taken down.
by Syd[a.k.a. "The Negation"] on Jan 7, 2009 6:34 PM EST up reply actions
It is pretty juicy isnt it? I have no idea who wins this fight. The longer the fight goes the more of a chance Carwin has of Gonzaga breaking down mentally. Carwin should be able to use his wrestling to keep the fight standing, but Gabe is no slouch on his feet.
This will be a great barometer of what level Carwin is at right now. Great match up! I would like to see Cain Vallesquez fight the winner as long as cain wins his next fight at the UFN.

by Syd[a.k.a. "The Negation"] on Jan 7, 2009 6:38 PM EST up reply actions
There aren’t many heavyweights in the UFC that have strung together a few consecutive wins, so Gonzaga isn’t too far off for a title shot. I think he’ll take Carwin out.
by Scott on Jan 7, 2009 3:20 PM EST reply actions
Gonzaga has beat Justin McCully and Josh Hendricks since his back to back losses hardly stellar Comp. If he beats Carwin I’ll be surprised. Gonzaga has shown a habit of folding up in his losses when things don’t go right for him.
I’ve got Carwin by 2nd rd. TKO.
by Tyler on Jan 7, 2009 3:35 PM EST up reply actions
What about Kongo? I think he is getting shafted a bit. I guess he did drop one to the crazy horse.
by LJ on Jan 7, 2009 3:36 PM EST up reply actions
He’s in the mix, but after the Herring loss he’s got to beat a quality guy before he’s talked about getting a title shot.
A fight with Cain Velasquez after Cain wins in Feb. would be a good match-up for both guys.
by Tyler on Jan 7, 2009 3:40 PM EST up reply actions
I like the idea of a fight between Cain and Kongo. It would be a good step-up for Cain and Kongo needs to beat quality opponents if he wants to talk about a title shot. Even if they were impressive stoppages, beating Dan Evensen and Mustapha al Turk doesn’t earn you a title shot. Stylistically I think that would also be a good match for Cain if he can get Kongo to the ground.
by GregC on Jan 7, 2009 4:11 PM EST up reply actions
Cain would control that fight on the ground. I could see that one getting boring. A victory by dry humping.
by FukStyck on Jan 7, 2009 4:49 PM EST up reply actions
i got to go with gonzaga in this one.hes known to completely fold under pressure but after seeing neil wain wobble carwin and the fact that gg hits incredibly hard with both hands and both feet im going for a first round ko in a barnstormer!!ive got a feeling though that the winner of nog/randy will get first shot and the winner of this will fight kongo for the next no 1 contender.

i said in an earlier post that they will have cro cop in the germany show because of the fact k-1 is big over there due to the eurosport channel.the ufc is not big over there and will need all the help it can get.
by SCOTT on Jan 7, 2009 3:25 PM EST reply actions
Why would he earn a rematch with a win over Shane Carwin?
His losses to Couture and Werdum (back to back) and the fact that you have a decent top layer in the HW division (Couture, Nog, Mir, Kongo…possibly, etc) have to set him back in the pack. Plus, were his last two wins over guys like McCully really impressive enough to move him to the top? Seems odd to me.
by K Campbell on Jan 7, 2009 3:25 PM EST reply actions
Hopefully he learned a lesson by watching Werdum. Except I think Carwin is a much bigger problem for Gonzaga than Dos Santos was for Werdum.
I can’t wait to see Carwin in this fight. I think he poses a lot more problems than Randy and Randy destroyed Gabe (MMA math, but I don’t care). Carwin vs. Brock for the title in 09?
by BNF on Jan 7, 2009 3:34 PM EST reply actions
if carwin starts training full time i could see that happening
by connor on Jan 7, 2009 11:54 PM EST up reply actions
Napao can and will defeat Carwin imo, Carwin’s chin hasn’t been properly tested and but Gonzaga will quickly change that. Whether Napao can handle Brock’s wrestling if they fight for the title is another issue altogether…

naw, kongo has nothing off of his back and if brock was even a little worried about his striking he’d take him down.
that wasnt a slight to kongo’s striking by the way, jsut not sure if you can knock someone out when there head is that freaking big
by connor on Jan 7, 2009 11:55 PM EST up reply actions
I like Kongo as much as anyone, but Gonzaga would take him down and destroy him. IF Kongo can keep improving his takedown defense, he will be a FORCE in the HW division!!

Kongo has been on a preety good run, his competition has been moderate however when he decides to turn up hes the real deal.
His only TKO loss came at the hands gilbert yvel, but hes fought some pretty tough competition and kongo has improved loads since then. Kongo has had a couple of split decision losses so IMO they are disputable.
I like Kongo he just has to get in the octagon with the same attitude as he finished off al-turk!!
by mo on Jan 7, 2009 4:07 PM EST reply actions
saying his competition lately has been moderate is being generous. to be a contender you have to beat contenders not the bottom half of the division. i think he has the tools but he needs to prove he has the tools against solid competition.
by Buttcrack Obama bin Laden on Jan 7, 2009 7:50 PM EST up reply actions
He doesn’t choose who he fights, that is the UFC’s fault. His take down defence in his last fight was excellent. On his feet Kongo can more than likely beat anyone. He is definately lacking in a ground game but the majority of the big fights have been won because it was the striking that set up the win. Kongo is one of the best strikers in the division and is improving his overall game all the time. He was supposed to be fighting Lesner before Randy did, and now they have given him some pretty mediocre opponents, why I don’t know, but the guy has the tools to definately take out anyone in the heavyweight division.
by Ade on Jan 8, 2009 8:03 AM EST up reply actions
I have been calling for Carwin vs Velasquez for quite sometime, and i dont think Carwin necessarily derserves or is ready for Gonzo, yet. But he still has a good chance of winning with his fast, powerfull hands and stellar wrestling, not to mention size (his hands are bigger than Lesnars and he cuts to 265 as well). Carwin vs Brocl would be great, down the road!
i think Lesnar training with Cotoure could be dangerous for other competitors, because as Randy said, Lesnar was like him 10 years ago. Plus he’ll have the opportunity to spar and get hit in the face by Wandy, Cotoure (again), Forrest, etc. This training will help!
Doesnt Mac Danzig train at XtremeCotoure!? and wasnt he the one talking sh*t about Lesnars tattoo!? haha!

Carwin vs. Velasquez would be an interesting fight, but I don’t think it’s in the best interest of the UFC to match them up at this point. They are the two most promising up and comers in the HW division, and I think it’s better for the UFC if they can both keep winning. I like the fight between Carwin and Gonzaga because it’s a big step up from the guys that each has been fighting recently and would put either guy close to a title shot with a win.
