Don't call it a comeback: An MMAmania.com interview exclusive with Mark "The Hammer" Coleman

Mark Coleman has been here before. No, not in Dublin - he's never been there before. But facing stiff odds overseas against a younger, highly touted opponent? He's made an entire career of it.

In fact, 13 of his 23 professional fights have been outside of the United States. From 1999 - 2006, Coleman fought almost exclusively for PRIDE FC, and made quite a name for himself in the Land of the Rising Sun.

You don't have to have English as your first language for "The Hammer" to want to punch you in the face.

On Saturday, January 17 at UFC 93, Coleman will face one of the toughest challenges of his career. And ironically enough, it will be against a man he's already beaten.

At PRIDE 31 back in 2006, Coleman was matched up against a Brazilian that many were considering the best light heavyweight on the planet, despite the fact that he wore no championship belt.

With just 13 fights to his name, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua had practically walked through an entire division, defeating the likes of Ricardo Arona, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, Alistair Overeem and Antonio Rogerio "Minotoro" Nogueira.

But at "Unbreakable," the PRIDE 2005 Light Heavyweight Grand Prix champion succumbed to one of Coleman's trademarked double-leg takedowns early in round one. Falling awkwardly, he dislocated his elbow and brought a halt to the match, awarding a shocking victory to "The Hammer," a competitor many had already written off as being long past his prime.

Post-fight mayhem ensued when Chute Box stormed the ring to protect the injured Rua. A pumped-up and screaming Coleman was intercepted by Rua's older brother Murilo and then Middleweight Champion Wanderlei Silva. Mild-mannered Coleman stablemate Phil Baroni threw his hat into the ring and well, it's probably better if you just YouTube it.

Suffice it to say Team Hammer House and Chute Boxe haven't been on each other's Christmas card mailing lists for quite a while. They have however, been waiting for a rematch.

Enter UFC 93.

On January 17, Coleman (15-8) will face Rua (16-3) once again, in front of thousands of screaming Irishmen at the O2 Arena in Dublin.

Hopefully they have tight security.

We caught up with Coleman right before he jetted over to the birthplace of Guinness to ask him his thoughts on the fight, how important a win is at this stage in his career, and if he thinks "Shogun" is overrated.

Star-divide

Adam Wagner (MMAmania.com): You were supposed to fight Brock Lesnar at UFC 87 but had to pull out with an injury. Is that a missed opportunity you would have liked to have - a shot at Lesnar when he's green?

Mark Coleman: Yeah, any time you miss a fight of that magnitude, it's a huge missed opportunity - especially at my age. It was very disappointing. It would have been one hell of a challenge, but something I was definitely looking forward to.

I'm not going to complain. I've been pretty lucky throughout my career. Injuries happen, and that's just the way it went.

Adam Wagner (MMAmania.com): Were you surprised that Lesnar went on to beat Randy Couture for the Heavyweight strap?

Mark Coleman: No, not really. I've always said that size does matter, and that's one very big guy. I anticipated Randy having a lot of problems with him.

Adam Wagner (MMAmania.com): You're set to fight Mauricio "Shogun" Rua at UFC 93 in Dublin. Do you look forward to fighting overseas in Ireland?

Mark Coleman: I've been fighting overseas for the last eight years, but yeah, I'm just excited to be fighting. I've never been to Ireland, so I think that could be pretty neat to go over there. I know they got some great fight fans over in Ireland.

I would prefer to fight in the United States, but I don't pick or choose where I fight or when I fight. I'm just excited to be fighting, and I think it'll be a great fight. They're known to have great fight fans over there, so it should be a special night.

Adam Wagner (MMAmania.com): This is your first fight since being inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame. Is there any added pressure to come out on top?

Mark Coleman: I remember Quinton Jackson telling me about coming back to the UFC, and mentioning the pressure of fighting for the UFC. I'm definitely feeling the same way. It's huge fighting back here in America, and where the UFC exploded so big. I'm trying to keep my emotions in check and trying to keep myself mentally strong.

I definitely feel the pressure, and I'm going to have to deal with it. But then, that's what I've been doing all my life is facing pressure, so I'll have to handle it, and I expect to.

Adam Wagner (MMAmania.com): This fight is a rematch from PRIDE 31, where you obviously got the TKO victory, and Rua got the elbow injury. Does that make this fight mean anything more to you, the fact that there's a history there, some unfinished business?

Mark Coleman: No, I think because we've already fought once, and "Shogun" has decided to make the fight personal, and everything involved in the whole situation definitely makes it a little more important to me. It's not personal to me ... Well, because he's made it personal, I've had to make it personal. But really, he's just another opponent - a very good one at that. But I just need to win this fight to keep my career going.

Adam Wagner (MMAmania.com): I read that you'd like to keep it standing, if possible. Is that true?

Mark Coleman: Well we'll see what happens. I've been planning on keeping a fight standing for a long time. It's just once a fight starts, it seems that my wrestling instincts just take over. But I have been working on my standup, and I wouldn't mind trying to trade with him - especially for the fans. I'm sure they'd like to see us trade.

But if it ain't going so well on our feet, certainly my bread and butter is going to be taking him to the ground and trying to ground and pound him. But I would like to try to stay on my feet, yeah.

Adam Wagner (MMAmania.com): Should you want to take him down, do you think you'll be able to at will?

Mark Coleman: If I decide to take him down, I'll take him down.

Adam Wagner (MMAmania.com): Strength-wise, I've heard you mention that you feel you definitely have the strength advantage on him. Can you comment a bit on that?

Mark Coleman: Well, I did last time, that's for sure. Hopefully cutting down to 205 doesn't take away too much of my strength. So far, I still feel pretty good. Actually the weight's coming off a little easier than I thought. I do anticipate having the advantage in the strength area, which is important, because that's one area that I do have an advantage over him.

Adam Wagner (MMAmania.com): Did you bring in a nutritionist or anything like that to help you make weight?

Mark Coleman: No, I've been reading about nutrition all my life. Basically, back when I fought at heavyweight back in the day in the UFC, I really wasn't following a strict diet because I needed to be big. I needed to be heavy, so I really didn't eat that clean. But I was carrying around way too much extra fat and extra muscle.

Phil Baroni is the one that kinda convinced me that I ... he basically said I eat like a pig. At first we had a nice little argument, but I went home that night and absorbed what he was telling me and realized he was right. So after having a talk with him, I changed to eating completely clean, and the fat came off, and I feel like I'm a better athlete because of it.

It's really not that scientific, dieting. To me it's pretty simple knowing what you should be eating and what you shouldn't be eating. A lot of it is common sense.

Adam Wagner (MMAmania.com): Before he came to the UFC and lost to Forrest Griffin, some had called Rua the best light heavyweight on the planet. Do you think he was overrated?

Mark Coleman: Well he had a heck of a run over there in Japan. He beat some good guys and performed very well. So maybe at the time he deserved that ranking. But in this sport your ranking can slip very quickly. Injuries and other aspects of your life - you know, fighters do have lives - and maybe some other things became more important to "Shogun," and you add the injuries in there, it'll take its toll on anybody.

So I think he's a great fighter, but to be the best, sometimes things have to go your way, and I think lately he's had a little bit of bad luck on his side.

Adam Wagner (MMAmania.com): As a fan I'd like to say welcome back, and good luck on January 17. Would you like to thank any sponsors or do you have any parting words for your fans about what they can expect to see at UFC 93?

Mark Coleman: I definitely need to thank CageFighter, MMAAuthentics and MMAElite. Without those guys, this comeback probably would have been much more difficult. They've helped me stay in the game financially and given me the ability to train for this fight. So I have to thank them big time.

Also, I'd like to thank my Aunt Mary and my late Uncle Ray, who have been helping me out my whole career when I ran into some troubles. And thanks to my mother and father and my kids. I want to thank my team, Team Hammer House, for all their moral support and their support in the training camp.

And most importantly, I'd like to thank the fans because they just really have been so kind and so supportive of me, and I really do appreciate it. I always have fought for the fans, and I always will.

If the weight is coming off as easy as he says, I definitely think he wins this fight…I’m in the minority, but will stand behind my pick!

I’m startin to feel the same way. With the Nog/Mir fight, my guy said Mir but everything else said Nog. I’m getting that again here. I smell upset special. Parlay Coleman with the early +160 line on BJ….niiiiice.

by Crowls on Jan 6, 2009 10:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

by “guy” i meant GUT. just a feeling. goes for the Fedor/AA fight too. I got Coleman, AA, and BJ.

by Crowls on Jan 6, 2009 10:35 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I know all about that gut feeling. I started to get it when I would see so many upsets happening. It just helps me to analyze the fights more thoroughly and to take a more realistic approach with my predictions. There is nothing in the world that would have made me think that even a highly motivated Frank Mir would dominate and be the first man to stop Nog. I felt that he was certainly capable of the decision upset because I didn’t think he could get submitted by Nog. I felt and still feel that Patrick Cote could have beaten Anderson Silva if the previous injury hadn’t been a problem for Cote. I wrote up the reasons as to why in previous articles if anyone is interested in my reasoning.

As far as this fight goes, Mark could defeat Shogun. More than anything, I am worried about Shoguns knee blowing out while Mark is going for a takedown. Shogun has had to get surgery twice on his knee now. Once you get surgery on your knee, it is never quite the same. They move tendons and stuff around from within and it just leads to future problems. I can’t imagine competing very well for too long after two injuries and two surgeries on a knee. I could be wrong and I really hope that I am.

Regardless, if Shogun comes out the victor, I want to see him fight Rampage. It would be a good rematch for Rampage and a great opportunity to move up in contention for Shogun. Plus I want to see Lyoto get a title shot and I feel that Thiago should be a major underdog in their upcoming fight being as I feel that Thiago is overrated. This is his first fight against a top fighter. His undefeated record will shine should he win but until then, I have no way of concluding that he is a top light heavy.

yea i hear what you’re sayin, thanks for the well thought out reply. I didn’t get that feeling with Cote. And I didn’t think Mir would dominate Nog, Just feel like these guys are some very live dogs. Odds are they don’t pull it off(especially AA, i think he’s a longer shot) but I just like their chances.

by Crowls on Jan 7, 2009 11:35 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I dont know how some of you guys can be predicting upset in this one. Can it happen? Absolutely, but none of you guys seriously thinks its going to happen for real. I doubt anyone on this site has the stones to lay down a big amount on a Mark Coleman bet…I sure dont.

I have a feeling this is just the uFC making money off Nostalgia. I honestly believe that they are selling us a washed up fighter with a big name (Legendary). They do this once or twice a year with guys like Ken Shamrock, Royce Gracie. NOne of them really even put up a fight. Not to mention Coleman hasnt fought in like Forever./…Long Lay offs are very hard to over come and at his age…I think its way too much.

I think Shogun is hungry and Healthy. He was embarressed by his UFC debut. I dont think he would have accepted a fight had he not been back to his normally Killer self.
I think its going to add badly for Colemna….But I do like and respect the Hammer. He is a stand up dude and a legend in the sport. I think as a heavyweight, he has even had a better career then couture.

I would have loved to see Randy vs. Coleman in their primes.

adam Wagner: As usual, great interview my friend!

by john on Jan 7, 2009 2:32 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

John, first off, he’s an underdog so why ever put a “big” amount down on a bet. And i’ve said before, Shogun should win and in all likelihood will win. But everyone on here keeps saying “if shogun is healthy….if he’s back to the shogun we saw in Pride”…etc. I’m just not gonna assume shogun is back in form until i see it. Knee injuries are a tough thing to come back from so i expect Coleman to put up a fight and will not be surprised if he wins. U take too much personal offense to ppl picking against your guys. I never said shogun sucks or is washed up…I’m just not back on board till i see him fight healthy. Don’t get so upset when someone picks against sho, page, fedor….etc. On a side note, i think Page is gonna be the first man to beat Machida.

by Crowls on Jan 7, 2009 4:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Where in my post do I seem upset? I was just writing my opinion. NO feelings attached. I respect what u r saying and I dont even disagree. But my belief is that Shogun is the most well rounded fighter at 205 and I absolutely EXPECT him to be back to his normal and HEALTHY self. He was embarrassed by the FOrrest fight and he will not step into the cage until he is back to top form. If Shogun steps into the Octagon on the 17th, it will mean that he is healthy and ready to hand out ass whoopings!

I will admit that I hate to see shogun lose!

ok yes he is the dog so you wouldnt have to bet big on him, but I dont even think anyone on this site has the stones or confidence to bet even a modest amount like $200 on Coleman. I just dont believe anyone can like this match up for Coleman.

Predictions arent an exact science. Its easy to know who is the better fighter, but there is no way to find out who the better fighter is on a given night. Anything can happen in the cage due to training, injuries, personal stuff.

What I am 100% positive is that if the best version of Shogun shows up to fight the best version of Coleman, then Coleman takes the beating of his life? U cant disagree with me on that! THats REAL TALK 4 you!

by john on Jan 7, 2009 7:38 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Shogun has said in interviews his walk around weight is 230 pounds so he also has to cut weight. I really hope Shogun has trained 100% for this fight cause he is one of the best all round fighters in the UFC.

speaking of which, I just looked at your myspace link for the first time. Nice family. I just found out we’re pregnant again. My daughter is just over one year old so I didn’t want two in diapers at the same time, but the wife convinced me that because it took 6 months to get preganant with our first, it would probably take a while for the second as well. Wrong. Immediate.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Jan 6, 2009 11:53 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

thats great buddy! My wife and I have been trying for 2 and a half years. No luck, been to fertility doctors, everything is fine, just no luck. I really don’t want any more, but don’t mind trying. I think we’re about to give up actually (not trying), but goning to get the big V I think! The deal last year was try for 1 more year!

by kevin on Jan 7, 2009 2:52 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t know if I wrote it, but thanks! What do you do in real estate, and where? My wife currently wants to buy in Houston! Lot of house for the money, warm weather and we can both transfer! We lived n FL for 5 years until a hurricane (charley) came over our house! My dads a builder, he went from 60+ closings a few years ago to like 5 in the last couple years. He’s vacationing a lot, and is lucky he can afford it, I feel for anyone in real estate right now! I sold my house in Massachusetts 3.5 years ago, the house is now worth 40k less than I got for it…crazy sh*t!!

by kevin on Jan 7, 2009 3:09 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Thanks, I’m in albuquerque and I have a license, but I mostly invest for my own company. I’m like those guys on the flip that house shows. They fudge their numbers by the way. I’m in Albuquerque. I did okay during the boom so I can ride out the drought. I usually say I’m immune to market fluctuation because in the times the market sucks I can get properties even cheaper and sell cheaper, but lately it doesn’t matter how low I list them, no one is out shopping.

Sorry to hear about the baby struggles. My sister had to have all kinds of surgery to remove scar tissue from endometriosis (sp?) and then take a shot every day for a long time all to open up a small window in which she could get pregnant. Just when she was ready to give up, it happened. I think preganancy prefers being unexpected.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Jan 7, 2009 12:31 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, my dad flips houses sometimes, but 99% new construction! Yeah, those guys definitely fudge the #‘s! I’ve been around the business my whole life, it will get better buddy! My dad lost everything after the boom in the 80’2, I actually think that was a worse market than now! I’m loving it, I’ll be able to pick up a 5 bedroom, huge house for under 200! I’m actually renting right now (dread writing the check), but the market keeps getting worse! I keep up with it, I want to but at the very bottom! My rent is double what my mortgage was! lol, and it goes to nothing…ridiculous actually!

hey congratulations bro! i’ve got a 3 year old little girl and all i can say is, no more for me! it’s wierd but every couple of months or so i say to myself,“i love this age and i can’t imagine how being a dad can get any better.” but it does with every developmental step. one thing im not looking forward to is the teenage years based on my experience.

Thanks Jonsey, yeah having a little girl has really softened me. I didn’t expect much of a relationship with a one-year-old, but she makes me laugh every day. She’s a blast and it keeps getting better.

Jesus H Christ, all this talk about Shogun being overrated and you’d think he had lost 3 or 4 fights consecutively. He injured his knee in training for Forrest and having underestimated Forrest, Shogun decided to take the fight and paid the consequences. He says he is close to or even 100% now (relatively) so believe you me, he will cause havoc in the UFC LHW division this year. Coleman is first, then hopefully Rampage and if Rashad still has the bely by the year end (which I doubt), Shogun WILL be the LHW champion by mid-2010 at the latest.

by jayshogun on Jan 6, 2009 9:53 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

by bushswinger on Jan 6, 2009 9:55 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

In Shogun’s run in Pride, there was only one real controversial fight – that being the Rogerio Nogueira fight where a minority thought the latter had won the fight. No other LHW in any organisation has had such a dominant run against top 15 fighters than that of Shogun’s in Pride.

by jayshogun on Jan 6, 2009 9:58 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Shogun had a tough run in that tournament. He had rampage in the first round. He absolutely destroyed Ricardo Arona… and his a good fighter. I enjoyed the rivalry between BTT and Chute Boxe.

Yes but not when its Mark Coleman. The guy is an absolute meathead. But in recent interviews in the lead up to this fight he seems ok…. but back in the Pride days he and Randleman were so funny to watch in pre and post fight interviews.

two most likely opponets for the following

Shogun Rua: Rampage or Griffin (if he beats coleman)
Rich Franklin: Manchida or Jardine (if he beats Hendo)
Rampage: Rashad or Shogun
Rashad: Lyoto or Rampage
Griffin: Jardine or shogun
Lyoto: Rashad or Franklin (if he beats thiago
Chuck: Vera or Hendo
Wanderlie: move to 185

Walk around weight or not, skills pay the bills – Shogun has them… Coleman doesn’t.

Listen to jayshogun. If Shogun is any where near 100% he will crush Coleman. Coleman is a lot closer to Ken Shamrock than a contender in the stacked 205 division.

And Shogun will be back. I love Chuck so I hope he doesn’t draw him next since he is in a must win.

Dont worry mark, the last thing ill do is label this fight “your come back” LMAO! Is this old timer for real??? Just the thought of Gun losing 2 in a row after being out of action forever and a crap debut against Forrest in the UFC makes me laugh uncontrolably!!!!!!!!!!!! The odds on that happening have to be the same as the odds on the Celtics losing 2 in a row this year and the 2nd loss coming by way of my Golden State Warriors . . . Oh wait . . .

well…Coleman should be fighting Couture..that fight makes more sense and more of an interest…SHogun is my favorite fighter and i cant bear to see him lose…Shogun has to win to regain his confidence and climb his way back to the top….
Shogun wins then it will be
UFC 97: Shogun vs Rampage for the title contention
then,
UFC 105: Shogun vs winner of Evans vs Machida/THiago Silva

Someone really needs to start a league or division for old school fighters Theres alot of fans out there that would love to see some classic rematches.
Bas
Frye
Coleman
Shamrock
Kerr
Tank
Royce
Rickson
Miletich
Severn
Oleg
I would love to see Bas Vs Rickson or see a rematch between Bas and Ken. Bas vs Coleman would be great too.

Bas wouldn’t fight; he could fight today if he wanted to, he’s in great shape, but he’s suffered too many injuries. In his match against warpath he went in with a leg injury and a seperated rib; can’t remember all that went wrong, but he was jacked up, he says he can’t fight anymore due to injuries.

Bas, Frye, Coleman, Shamrock , Kerr, Tank, Royce, Rickson, Miletich, Severn, Oleg, Igor

I would love to see Bas Vs Rickson or see a rematch between Bas and Ken. Bas vs Coleman would be great too.

haha that would be entertaining to say the least.. I would love to see coleman win, however if he does, where’s he going? He’s not got the youth or skill set of shogun to actually make a run at the belt.. and if you’re not in contention for the belt then what are you doing? Shogun to win, for sanitys sake.

I’m with you rc, OLD HEAD LEAGUE!

It would be killer. I think Coleman is trying to make as much money as he can while he can still fight. I agree though he has no chance at a title run, maybe Dana wants to bring him to the LHW division to be a high profile gate keeper. Now if they still allowed headbutts and knees to a downed opponent Shogun might be in grave danger.

did anyone see colemans second fight with fedor? after the fight he brought his two young daughters into the ring to meet fedor, aka the guy who just made his face look like a hamburger patty. it was disturbing to watch his daughters sobbing uncontrollably and to see the fear in their eyes as they shyed away from fedor. after that i’ll never pull for coleman. the dude might be the father of gnp but he’s not a good parent!

and he was dropping mad F-bombs in front of them as well. It was very disturbing indeed.

Some people forget that Shogun weighed in HEAVIER than Coleman last time they fought. (Rua-227, Coleman-224) We’ll see if he still has the strength now that he’s older. Shogun’s hips and balance should negate any minor strength advantage.

If Mark decides to stand, it won’t be long before he’s getting tooled and goes for a double leg. Shogun, Sub, late round 1,or early round 2.

I hope that the Hammer takes this fight, but if he doesn’t Owell it’s no big deal. because evryone considers Shogun to be a top 5 Lhwt.so if Shogun wins it just means that Shogun is back on his way to the top of the Lhwt division.win or lose I would like to see the Hammer fight the Natural at Lhwt or even Hwt if that’s what they want.who Shogun fights next depends on if he wins this fight.even if he wins I think that he needs another win o2 before he is back in the top 5-77 of a stacked Lhwt division.
