UFC Quick Quote: Wanderlei Silva open to middleweight move ... maybe

wandi ufc

"[Light heavyweight is] my normal weight. I never cut down too much weight for a fight. Maybe I go to fight one more time at light heavyweight, and after I go down.... I am thinking I want to fight Chuck [Liddell] again. I want to fight with him again because I had a good match with him, and his style is a good style for me, and my style is good for him. It’s good for the show. Maybe it’s good for Dana."

-- Former Pride FC middleweight (205 pounds) monster Wanderlei Silva tells MMAWeekly.com that he would consider a drop to 185 pounds if UFC President Dana White wanted him to make the cut. "The Axe Murderer" has lost four of his last five fights, three of which have been via brutal knockouts. Quinton "Rampage" Jackson was the latest opponent to put him to sleep, scoring a vicious one-punch knockout at UFC 92: "The Ultimate 2006." Before he sheds the 20 plus pounds; however, he'd like to challenge Chuck Liddell one more time. The pair -- who were at one time the sports two biggest stars -- duked it out in a thrilling three-round bout back at UFC 79: "Nemesis" in December 2007. Liddell is penciled in to return at UFC 96 in early March against a yet to be named opponent. Silva will more than likely not be ready in time -- he has to serve a mandatory medical suspension until February because of the most recent knockout. Perhaps a change and some new scenery at 185 pounds would revitalize his struggling career.

A fight with Chuck has obviously been discussed! First chuck mentions it, then wand, and chuck needs an opponent! Hopefully this fight will happen, and wand will knock chuck into retirement this time! I’ve bee calling for a move to MW for a while now, he’d be a beast!

by kevin on Jan 5, 2009 10:52 AM EST reply actions

Or he’d be malnutritioned and uncomfortable.

by O Damn he got caught on Jan 5, 2009 10:59 AM EST up reply actions

if he only has to cut 20 pounds over a training camp?! I could do that in 2 weeks, never mind 2 months!

by kevin on Jan 5, 2009 11:02 AM EST up reply actions

if you could cut 20 pounds in two weeks you would, we’ve seen your pictures. i don’t know about you, but dropping 20 pounds when it isn’t all water weight isn’t the easiest thing to do.

by newkoba on Jan 5, 2009 11:17 AM EST up reply actions

Yea Wandi is pretty solid at 205 as is, thats 20 lbs of muscle, sucks to cut muscle, thats burning a lot of energy.

by O Damn he got caught on Jan 5, 2009 11:27 AM EST up reply actions

I’m up and down bro. I took 3 months off work, and put on 15 pounds! I’m around 220 right now. I go back to work wed, I’d put money on the fact that I’ll be back to 200 by febuary! I lose weight fast when active! I’m also going to start working out after work (hopefully it sticks). My birthday is in june, my realistic goal is to be under 200 and in decent shape by then! You’re right about tough to lose non water, but wand is a professional, he’ll do it easily!

I have NO Problems with Wandy wanting a rematch with Chuck. I do however feel that its pathetic of Chuck to ask for a rematch against Wandy. Chuck won the 1st fight. what winners can u recall asking for a rematch with a guy they beat? Tito and Ken maybe. Does chuck really want to be in that group?

Asking to rematch a guy u beat is just LOW if you ask me. I wouldnt mind the rematch because I truly believe wandy will kNock his head off, but its pretty petty of Chuck “IU fight whoever, whenever” to ask for a fight against a guy he beat just a year ago!

wanderlei needs to move down to middleweight to fight Hendo. THat saga deserves closure! At midleweight he would still destroy 9/10ths of fighters!

by john on Jan 5, 2009 11:46 AM EST up reply actions

Wrestlers have an easier time than strikers, also he’s never cut to 185 before, I don’t doubt he can do it, I just think there’s enough reason to suspect it will hamper his performance until he’s adjusted to the weight. He should move down and fight Cote or even Chris Leben after his suspension is over; but not until he’s adjusted. IMO it’s definatley not something they should rush.

by O Damn he got caught on Jan 5, 2009 11:48 AM EST up reply actions

These guys (Chuck and Wandy) need to do what De La Hoya is doing, get as many high profile fights in before you retire. Hopefully they will get major paydays from them.

I’m actually really interested in Cote vs Wandi or Leben vs Wandi, battle of the brawlers. A fight with Leben would be an awesome scrap, and a great chance for Wandi to get his carreer back on track hopefully with a fight of the night KO.

while this fight is still and will always be an entertaining bout

i dont think this fight should be booked for a couple of reasons.

-1. chuck just fought and beat wand 1 year ago.

-2. wand should be fighting at mw. theres no question there.

nuff~ said!

i say chuck should fight forrest and wand should drop down

and fight bisping or hendo[after frank beats him]

wand needs to drop down~ at this state in his career i dont

see him winning lhw gold[ever].. he is just too small.

I’ve been proponent of Wandy’s drop to MW for some time. I’m happy he’s considering it. The fact that he doesn’t cut much as is means he shouldn’t have trouble dropping to MW with a good trainer.

Kevin, I dropped 20lbs in 10 weeks by simply avoiding sugar and swapping carb’s for beans at restuarants. Don’t drink any calories either. Simple things that work. Complicated diets aren’t necessary.

ok, just email me whem you get back, we’ll do lunch!
they got a great no limit game in hayward and pai gow (I like the action).
I’ve been getting killed in NFL/bowl games. went from up 30 something units to down almost 20 in a matter of a month!

by kevin on Jan 5, 2009 12:43 PM EST up reply actions

you’re right punch/ovaries! I cut out coldstone for 6 months last year and lost 15 pounds, did nothing else! I’m notoriously lazy, no getting around it! I used to be a great athlete, now I’m a husband and dad! I play football/basketball with my son, and have decided it’s time to get into better shape! It is very easy for me to lose the weight and keep it off, but 3 month “vacations” don’t help!

Since I’ve been stuck in Florida, I’ve been playing at this place called the Isle in Pompano. They have a ton of 1/2 No limit fish there. Easy money. I cant wait until I can play at Commerce again.

I like liting weights but I’m no fan of cardio. I’m a dad of a one year old girl and I have another on the way so I don’t have as much time to train as I used to either. Anyway, I always think of how running a mile burns approximately 100 calories and how a soda has more calories than that. Not that I like diet soda, but if it means I can skip running a mile, I’m all over it. My other lazy solution is the good old George Foreman grill. Slap chicken breasts in it and plug it in. Litte hot wing sauce(0 calorie) and eat as much as you want. My wife buys terrible shit though and she’s a string bean so that doesn’t help.

i hear that! i dont bet football cause i always get killed.

i bet on almost everything but football.

most of my bets are on mma~ since its a year long sport.

i did great in mma this year.

did horribly bad in nba[i will stab paul when i see him.lol]

did good in hockey.

cleaned up at the olympics~

and my casino bets did just over 50%..

2008 was a profitable year for me..i keep track of everything.

this year i plan on having a better year

so im not betting

nba~mlb & and nfl..

but i will be betting during march madness.

and i am only betting 7 fights at most[per card] 5 at least..

no parlays.

and i will do less casino gambleing.

I did great playing poker. won double digit tournaments and cashed 30+ times.
pai gow (action game ) did pretty well.
had a good NFL year until the past month, hopefully can pull even in the next 2 weeks!
I’ve taken a month off of playing poker, but that’s my bread and butter. the no limit game I play in, I buy in for 500-1000 usually. If I had a “sponsor” I could buy in for more and make a lot more. I’m a very good poker player, it’s a good 2nd income!

Both Chuck and Wany are past their primes..This fight is just for drawing more ppl to watch than making any complications to the title hunt.
There is a new breed of fighters emerging so these so called hall of fames should have their time up

by Anonymousf*ck on Jan 5, 2009 11:02 AM EST up reply actions

Because they were cotenders or champ’s for so long, they are always facing the stiffist competition. Do you really thing they’re washed up or just not what they used to be? I think they can still take out at least half the division. So I say keep fighting.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Jan 5, 2009 1:18 PM EST up reply actions

I agree Ovaries, past there prime doesnt mean they should retire… so they arent champs anymore, but they are still very dangerous fighters… that being said, I would LOVE to see Wandy move to MW and fight Okami, then get a shot at Anderson (Silva vs Silva)

I like both Chuck and Wanderlei but if they fight i will be rooting for Chuck and if Chuck was to beat him then he needs to rematch Jardine and KO him after that if Chuck truely wants his belt back he must fight big named fighters that cant hit hard or have a glass jaw e.g. Griffin, jardine machida because although Machida is smart i dout he could KO Chuck or take one of his best hits so they are who Chuck must face to get his belt back.

by JUMBO JOE on Jan 5, 2009 11:11 AM EST reply actions

Regardless of what the scale says Wanderlei, you’re done. Thanks for the memories but it’s time to retire. How many more losses will it take to convince you?

by Graham on Jan 5, 2009 11:13 AM EST reply actions

Hopefully a few more, cause at 32 yrs old, he’s far from finished; he’s on a skid and going through a bad period right now, but that doesn’t mean he’s finished. Wandi can definatley come back, before getting KO’d by Rampage he just came off a KO win over Jardine, and there is absolutley no shame in losing to Chuck Liddell, Rampage Jackson, Mirko Cro Cop or Dan Henderson, your talking about 1 Heavy weight and the other three are/were known as the best fighters in the world at one time.

age has little to do with it after getting KOed so many times

by McArthur on Jan 5, 2009 11:44 AM EST up reply actions

He’s been KO’d 4 times, thats it, the other TKO on his record is a cut, Belfort tko was back in the day, Cro Cop, Hendo and Jackson were viscious, but these aren’t carreer ending IMO.

by O Damn he got caught on Jan 5, 2009 11:51 AM EST up reply actions

they were big time KO’s though…my point is that severe concussions can age a fighter faster than usual…when do you stop, after perm brain damage…honestly do you think Wand looks 32…not me, he looks dam near 40

by McArthur on Jan 5, 2009 12:04 PM EST up reply actions

I think thats more scar tissue than anything else though; he’s definatley fought through some pretty nasty cuts and swelling. Shoot, look at Coleman, he’s 40 and lookin like he’s damn near 60, thats stress/roids aging the fighter imo. I think Wandi has put his body through some punishment, he’s definatley gone through some wars but he’s still got another KO streak left in the tank imo.

by O Damn he got caught on Jan 5, 2009 12:17 PM EST up reply actions

unless chuck comes out and drasticly changed his game like gsp did after serra i dount that match will happen

by R.e.s on Jan 5, 2009 11:25 AM EST reply actions

Wanderlei and Chuck only have about 2-3 fights left each unless both of them mysteriosuly start KOing guys or just plain winning. At least Wanderlei can still KO someone, he just cant get hit or else hes goin out. Chuck might still have some KO power, but we havent seen it in a while. He was close with Wanderlei, but it looks bad when Rampage KOs him with one punch and Liddell coudlnt do it with 20. Maybe Rampage hits that hard though…..

by Chadx23 on Jan 5, 2009 11:26 AM EST reply actions

That left hook would have KO’d just about anyone, it was on the button; tagged right on the lower jaw, Wandi went toe to toe with Chuck took some of his best shots and still kept fighting; can’t stand this talk about how he’s shot or how he’s done; the guy isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Just cause Joe Rogan says “you can only get your card punched so many times” while commentating on a fight doesn’t mean Wanderlei is finished.

by O Damn he got caught on Jan 5, 2009 11:36 AM EST up reply actions

I agree ODHGC! That punch would have KO’d anyone. Same goes for the Rashad shot on Chuck! Look at Mark Hunt this weekend, everyone was saying he had an iron jaw, but he got ko’d in 15 seconds! If a shot lands perfect, you’re out! Some guys’ “button” is smaller than others, but a “perfect” shot, and anyone will get KO’d!

by kevin on Jan 5, 2009 11:45 AM EST up reply actions

I guess your right. It just seems that Chuck and Wanderlei used to take bombs and still kept fighting. I dont know….time will tell.

by Chadx23 on Jan 5, 2009 11:55 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah that would have KOed anybody for sure. If you really look closely at Wanderlei’s record it’s not as impressive as you might at first think. I really like Wanderlei, he’s really exciting and truly is a fan favourite but it’s not 2003 and he’s not fighting in Japan anymore.

The bar is constantly moving as the sport is growing so fast. I hope he can put together one last run.

With the exception of the 2 wins over Rampage he has lost to pretty much all the top guys:

Rampage (Fair enough he beat him twice before)
Chuck (Good fight but Chuck clearly won)
Hendo (Brutal KO, does hold a decision win over him)
Crocop (Nasty KO, also has a draw against the ’Cop)
Arona (A win and a loss)
Hunt (Split decision loss)
Tito (Loss)
Vitor (Quick TKO loss)

He also lost to some other brazilian guy. Not sure how much a hat trick of wins stands for over Sakuraba, or wins against Yuki Kondo, Fujita or Nakamura. Yoshida’s not the best either imo.

So I’ll give him the Jardine win, no debating that one, Keith is probably top 10, also the 2 over Rampage, the Hendo decision and the Arona win. That’s 5. 8 losses against top guys though.

Against good competition he’s really 5-8!!!…Still he’s a huge fan favourite due to his wild, aggressive style and charisma.

I’m a big fan and without sounding too harsh, he made a good living beating up Japanese competition. I’ll refrain from the use of the term cans but let’s say journeymen.

I used to think he’d fare better at MW but not so much anymore. I’ll admitt I thought he was “back” after demolishing Jardine. I also thought the fight with Rampage was a toss up but the closer it got to the fight the more I leaned towards Quinton. Good thing I had Quinton in the parlay haha. I don’t see him really challenging at MW now. Not because he’s getting worse but moreso because the game is moving on at a fast pace and he has been left behind. Also like many of the Pride fighters it might be fair to say he was somewhat overrated, or maybe not overrated but overhyped.

by RobH86 on Jan 5, 2009 1:15 PM EST up reply actions

K the split decision to Hunt was debatable, as he had like 8 take downs in that fight; the only reason the Cro Cop fight is a draw is because there were no judges, Wanderlei clearly dictated the pace and won that fight; and Tito Ortiz had to turn into a human blanket to save his ass in a fight against Wanderlei. He is one of the best fighters in the world, period, and can hang with ANYONE in his division; Jackson landed a nice left, Cro Cop caught him with a nice head kick, it happens, but how often does ANYONE steam roll Silva?? Not very. This is a real fighter, who’s fought 14 times in the last 4 years; yes, he’s going through some bad times at the moment but overrated? I think not.

by O Damn he got caught on Jan 5, 2009 3:18 PM EST up reply actions

Great Post ODAMN!
Wandy clearly deserved the win against Hunt and if the Cro cOP fight had judges he would have clearly won that one.

as for the tito fight, what a joke…Tito Turned his back and ran away from Wandy to the other end of the cage with the axe murder chasing him. it was much worse then what Kalib did IMO

Wandy would be on the Mt. Everest of mma….Nuff said!

by john on Jan 5, 2009 4:59 PM EST up reply actions

The second time Crocop was dominating him. Tito clearly won but I had to laugh at him turning his back and running away from Wanderlei. Yeah the Hunt fight was debateable. Still lost them all though.

I have watched the Crocop Wanderlei second fight numerous times, that would be as close to a steam rolling as he’s suffered I suppose. He got caught cold against Vitor but even now I’d pick Vitor over Wanderlei, call me crazy haha. Still I reckon he kind of needs to win a few more of the big ones to be considered great. Maybe I’m wrong, it’s not boxing so perhaps the records count for less.

by RobH86 on Jan 5, 2009 6:41 PM EST up reply actions

CroCop vs. Wanderlei II was about as one sided a beatdown I can remember for a fought that was suppose to be a competitive toss up. That was one of the more entertaining fights I’ve see the way CroCop dismantled him. Even during the stoppage to check Wanderlei’s eye (which seemed to take forever the 1st time I saw the fight) I was on the edge of my seat. That’s the CroCop I’ll always remember. As far as the Tito fight definitely not the best fight either has been in, but clearly a win for Tito.

by Tyler on Jan 5, 2009 6:59 PM EST up reply actions

Tyler I agree. He got molested by CroCop the second time. Don’t think we’ll see Mirko in that form again. His heart isn’t in it anymore I reckon.

Well he has a record of 17-1. 11 wins by TKO or KO and 4 by sub. Only twice has he gone to decision. But yeah, only really two KOs on the record the rest are TKOs. He did throw more haymakers and power shots in the Cage Rage days but his more measured approach has served him well in the UFC thus far albeit not against the top tier yet.

bisping could not fight his way out of a wet paper bag, much less knock wandy out! come on man

Some british fans don’t allow objectivity into their posts. Bisping even admitted that he fought for a decision against Leben. I know he had no chance of beating him by KO, but cmon man. Bisping has above average striking skills, with below average KO power. He is merely an average fighter, who avoids damage pretty well. He really should try to evolve into a wrestler/ground and pounder or something, because his striking isn’t going to be exciting anytime soon. I am starting to wish the guy would just go away. Its already bad enough that we have to watch him as a coach on TUF. More annoying rambling and stupid comments are on tap from England’s “best” fighter. If Bisping is the best that the queen can offer us, she should have her boys stick to cricket, soccer and rugby. Listen to Joe Rogan’s comedy CD “I’m gonna Be Dead Someday” for a funny view on that subject. I wonder if Bisping has ever heard it…lmao.

Im not a huge Wandi fan, but i do tip my hat off to the guy. His last 4 fights have been against great competition. No cans. Henderson in Pride, and Chuck, Jardine, and Page in the UFC. Those are all great fighters, Jardine is a tough guy because of his strange style. So 1-3 over tough competition. Maybe he does need to drop to 185. There are ton’s of interesting match ups at 185 for him. Leben if he is able to return, that would be a bang fest, Cote another bang fest, Marquart, Anderson, Okami, Bisping, Maia, I think those are all interesting match ups. Best of luck to Wand whatever he does

personally i see leben knocking wandys head off. leben has a granite chin and anderson silva ko’d him with his precise striking. wandy would go guns blazing catch leben a few times but im pretty sure leben would hit him with a bomb and it be over.

THERE is a fight that is guaranteed to end in a KO. Probably one of the most exciting fights of all time. Think about it. I’d love to see that one.

he wants chuck because he thinks it will be a big payday. im really not that interested in that fight though, definately not as a main event. i would like to see him fight cote or some of the other studs at 185. his muscle isnt natural, he lifts a lot of weights. dropping wont be hard for him. glad to hear is might make the move.

Dude, get a life. You make a very compelling argument when you use such such juvenile insults…even changing your name and all. What are you trying to prove? What are you like 14? Go post on some WWE forum and get the hell out of here.

All this talk about Wandy cutting 20 pounds of muscle is BS. If he fights at 185, he’ll probably lose about 10 pounds of muscle, and walk around at about 200. Then he’ll cut the excess water to get down to 186 before the fight. Plenty of other guys do that, and he’s already a cardio machine, so his body can take it. Rich Franklin is a perfect example. He walked aqround at about 210 when he was fighting at 185, and dominated for quite a while. Wandy at 185 could go either way, but I envision a devastating striker, with even FASTER hands and feet than before. Plus, there atrent many good enough wrestlers in the division to put him on his back and keep him there. Hendo is probably the only one.
