Phil Baroni to headline XMMA 7 against Guillaume De Lorenzi on Feb. 27

Phil "New York Bad Ass" Baroni will be back in action on February 27 at the XMMA 7: "Inferno" card, set to take place at the Bell Center in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He'll face off against undefeated XMMA veteran Guillaume De Lorenzi in the night's main event.

Baroni (13-10) went (3-2) in 2008 after making only one start in 2007. He started last year with back-to-back losses to Kala Hose and Joey Villasenor under the Icon Sport and Elite XC banners. Those defeats came at the end of a streak that saw him lose five of seven fights.

After dropping down in weight to compete at 170 pounds, NYBA started to turn things around near the end of the year and rebounded with three straight wins over Scott Jansen at Cage Rage 27: "Step Up", Ron Verdadero at Icon Sport: "Hard Times", and Olaf Alfonso at Palace Fighting Championships 10: "Explosive".

He'll be looking to continue his recent string of success but won't have an easy time against the hard hitting De Lorenzi (5-0). The Brazilian Top Team (BTT) Canada product has sent his last four opponents home with first round technical knockout losses on their records.

He should make for a very exciting match up against Baroni since both guys like to throw leather.

We also reported last week that ex-Elite XC female standout Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos would be a part of this card as well. The talented Brazilian striker signed a one-fight deal with the promotion and her opponent is expected to be announced shortly.

Here's the current lineup for XMMA 7 "Inferno":

Star-divide

Phil Baroni (13-10) vs. Guillaume De Lorenzi (5-0)
Cris Cyborg (6-1) vs. TBA
Light Heavyweight Champion Martin "The Stress" Désilets (8-2) vs. Todd Gouwenberg (9-4)
Ryan "Big Deal" Jimmo (9-1) vs. Mike Nickels (6-2)
Lightweight Champion "Ragin" Kajan Johnson (14-10-1) vs. Steve "The Snake" Claveau (8-7-1)
Thierry "The Surgeon" Quenneville (12-8) vs. Douglas Evans (6-4)
Dan "The Bighouse" Grandmaison (8-6) vs. Markhaile Wedderburn (8-3)
Tim Wadsworth (3-0) vs. Shane Rice (4-3)
William Romero (3-0) vs. Mitch Gagnon (2-0)
Valerie Létourneau (N/A) vs. Kate Roy (1-1)
Daylin Logan (1-0) vs. Dominic Poissant (0-1)
Sebastien Deroy (N/A) vs. Jeff Royer (N/A)

It looks like a solid card for the Montreal fans. If you're in the area, be sure to check it out.

You know, I seriously hated this guy after watching his ridiculous entrances mixed with poor efforts. But after seeing how he handled on that b.s. in England (?) with the brother headbutting him and the girlfriend giving him some hand gesture, I actually gained a smidgen of respect for the guy.

by chefdaddy on Jan 5, 2009 8:25 PM EST up reply actions

Dont think i heard about that? someone fill me in?

by medecine balls on Jan 5, 2009 8:27 PM EST up reply actions

He KO’s the guy after some ridiculous officiating from a shitty ref. The guy’s brother runs to check on him, Baroni goes to make sure he’s ok – then bam the guy headbutts him. The GF then proceeds to spit on him and flip him off. Everyone was expecting “the best eva” to start KO’ing mofos but in twist of events, he was very complimentary in his speech.

I wanna see cyborg vs kaufman. That would be sick.

They had the video up on Mania when it happened. Some crowd favorite got Knocked the F OUT by Baroni. And when Baroni went to check on the guy, his brother headbutted him while the girlfriend cursed him out and gave him something resembling the finger. Dont know where to look for the link though.

by chefdaddy on Jan 5, 2009 8:31 PM EST up reply actions

Oh yeah ive seen that, he was definitely classy there. I still hate him though.

Baroni is a has been that never was. The guy is a fucking mediocre ass clown. He will lose just like his butt buddy Coleman is going to lose. I dont know why anyone would waste inches on a monitor and KB’s (MB if you count the picture I guess) on a story about Baroni.

Is this going to be on TV? Because I could sure go for some of that soft core gay porn that his entrance passes for.

Why are you commenting then? What do you care?

by Smash your Testicles with a Hammer on Jan 5, 2009 10:02 PM EST up reply actions

Smash: It’s my opinion of the guy. I just stated what every Baroni nut swinger fails to admit about the guy. In case you didnt know, a 13-10 record isnt exactly a good record in MMA. Sorry if I dogged on your man crush.

I don’t know about you MexiMelt but I don’t go by records as far as judging fighters I like to watch. If I did I’d be a huge fan of Tony Bonello and Philip Miller.

by Tyler on Jan 5, 2009 11:01 PM EST up reply actions

I dont see why anyone would purposely watch a Baroni fight, unless it’s solely to watch him lose

De Lorenzi will smash Baroni, De Lorenzi will be a major force in the WW division in the future, I think he’ll make quick work of Baroni but at least headlining what I assume will be a televised card (XMMMA 6 was on the fight network) will get De Lorenzi some recognition because the UFC should definatly be scouting him.

Seriously, will baroni ever go away. I’m from NY and he gives us a bad name, which is pretty hard to do.

by Hughes sux on Jan 5, 2009 8:24 PM EST reply actions

how does a guy go from being “da best eva!” to 13-10. ouch! i think half of baroni’s training camp was focused on his entrance.

by jonsey on Jan 5, 2009 8:24 PM EST reply actions

It looks like he borrows some of “Nature Boy” Rick Flair’s wardrobe.

by chefdaddy on Jan 5, 2009 8:26 PM EST up reply actions

This guy has basically pro longed his career by 10 years cause of an enterance and a lil personality…not a good one though.

Sorry to get off topic, but Baroni sucks anyway.

Props to the Wolfsliar Gym in England! I just read an interesting piece about how they test ALL of their fighters for Roids/Drugs before all the UFC events. They do this cause they dont ever want to tain their name in the eyes of the UFC.

More camps should be doing this!

by john on Jan 5, 2009 8:31 PM EST up reply actions

That seems like the right/classy thing to do!!! Other camps should definitely follow their lead.

by chefdaddy on Jan 5, 2009 8:32 PM EST up reply actions

That is very very smart to do for the management company because they are going to get a cut of each fighters pay and they wouldnt want to get fined for a part of the purse, and its good for the whole ethical part of the business too. And they are going to get a huge amount of PR for doing that too. I think the bigger camps will start to follow

by ehoglund on Jan 5, 2009 8:39 PM EST up reply actions

trying not to get bashed here, but if baroni strings a few more wins together, is it possible that we’ll see him back in the ufc, even though the ww division is pretty stacked?

by jslim on Jan 5, 2009 8:25 PM EST reply actions

Don’t worry about being bashed! Especially over that! I think he will either need to string a sh!tload of victories or it will take a very big and exciting win in order for Baloni to get back in to the Octagon®.

by Psyqo78®™ on Jan 5, 2009 8:30 PM EST up reply actions

he’ll need to rack up more wins than jeremy horn with 10 losses!

by jonsey on Jan 5, 2009 8:40 PM EST up reply actions

you are probably right……. That’s why I used sh!tload….lol

by Psyqo78®™ on Jan 5, 2009 8:54 PM EST up reply actions

not bashing ya jslim haha, and i replied to your comment ref the UK vs Ireland too. I agree i thnk if he wins a couple more esp if it is dramatic fashion we could see a return of the NY badass, just because he will be a fan favorite and think if the ufc is in NY when they bring him back. Prolly not a bad idea

by ehoglund on Jan 5, 2009 8:41 PM EST up reply actions

jslim: How long have you smoked crack cocaine?

by El_Mexicutioner, formerly The _Mexicutioner on Jan 5, 2009 10:21 PM EST up reply actions

ya no problem ehoghlund, sound for the reply horse! nott a bad idea is right bout baroni/ufc/new york, especially since dana and co are really pushing for new york!

by jslim on Jan 5, 2009 9:02 PM EST reply actions

Yeah..Question for everyone to chime in on. If UFC goes to NY do you think that they would put florian, lauzon, and all of sityodong (or tong) on the card along with the other New Yorkers? OR keep them off of it due to the NYC vs Boston rivalry and just wait until they go take it to Boston to put them there.

My thoughts are they would bring them in as well, just for the attraction of everyone to attend the event from the whole region.

What do you think?

by ehoglund on Jan 5, 2009 9:29 PM EST up reply actions

Why hasnt the WWE signed Phil Baloni yet ? His ring entrances are priceless. He put some much effort into his entrance that he usually gass’es out and winds up with the Loss. He is a showman would be perfect for good ole Vinny Mac and the WWE

by See What Had Happend Was !!!! on Jan 5, 2009 11:16 PM EST reply actions

The Ufc should have brought Jabroni back to fight Koscheck in England. It would be more intresting than this Brazilian dude he’s facing.

by Flying Knee on Jan 5, 2009 11:48 PM EST reply actions

Baroni is one of the biggest chumps around, I cant believe people pay him to fight. He is nothing more than a steroid injected bouncer.

by the spyder on Jan 5, 2009 11:49 PM EST reply actions

People pay to see Baroni do to the simple fact that all his fights are entertaining. Love him or hate him, every time Baroni sets foot in the cage you know your going to witness a good fight. If he isn’t knocking the guy out… he’s getting knocked out. Better than watching two guys role around trying to take eatchothers backs for 15 minutes or watching someone like Lyoto Machida dance around for 15 minutes.
