MMA Quick Quote: 'Fireball Kid' gets doused (again) at Sengoku

"He looks strong, but I think I hate him; I don't know why. After this fight, I don't think I'll ever talk to him ever again, no matter the result.... I told [Shinya] Aoki, from here on out, I'll make it so that you won't ever hear anything about Gomi anymore. It's going to be too long for me, but I don't intend to let it go long. Gomi says he wants to show speed and strength. So I'm thinking, 'Fine, let's finish it fast.' If I go as usual, this will be a quick fight."

-- Satoru Kitaoka tells Sherdog.com before his fight against Takanori Gomi at Sengoku: "No Ran 2009" that he doesn't like the lightweight sensation and predicted he would finish him fast. He did just that, locking in a fight-ending heel hook in less than 90 seconds and winning the promotion's first-ever division title. "The Fireball" kid -- the Pride FC posterboy for years -- was widely regarded as the top lightweight fighter in the world not too long ago. But with two consecutive losses and having won just two of his last five fights it's safe to say that he has lost much of his luster. Perhaps as Kitaoka suggests Aoki is now the man to worship in the division in the "Land of the Rising Sun." And maybe he should have been all along.

The pride days are over yet Gomi still thinks he’s at that caliber! I’ve read where Dana wanted to bring him in right away (after buying pride) but his list of demands were worse than Fedors! Gomi needs to get back to basics and training hard, but I don’t see it happening! I loved pride, but this is just going to show the influence that pride might have had on the matches in pride!

True stuff, pride was obviously a little biased. Its still depressing to see some of their stars fade away like they have been. Sigh :(

yeah, the joe stevenson of japan was too good tonight..

Difference is most stars are getting old, Gomi is all mental/dedication.

Kitaoka said he wants a rematch with Gomi.

by R/p on Jan 4, 2009 3:08 PM EST up reply actions

Why rematch? It was decisive and quick. After this fight, I am definitely putting down cash on franklin-too many upsets grouped together.

Don’t be so hasty. Don’t forget he went the distance with Rampage. I like Franklin in this fight too but anything is possible. I hate to see anyone lose a large sum of money in this economy.

Kit said he felt that that wasn’t the real Gomi and wants to fight him again to prove no fluke.

Wow, I wonder if Gomi just fed into his own hype after a while or he really is fading… Aoki IMO has always been the fighter to watch in the lighter division so its good that Kitaoka gives him respect for bein a top 10 LW fighter that he is. It would be nice to see either Aoki or Kitaoka in the UFC, possibly to drive an event towards the Land of the Rising Sun coupled with Yushin Okami and Yoshiyuki Yoshida. Or maybe Gomi’s price tag will be significantly lower and the UFC will add him….

MMA in a ring is just plain wrong, like football in an Arena. Thanks for posting the Vid Mania. Back to GTA 4 now………

by RiverHorror on Jan 4, 2009 1:33 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, it just doesnt fit in a ring for me either./

Aesthetically-speaking, arguing that MMA looks better in a cage is an uphill battle.

Wow! Satoru Kitaoka was able to turn into that RNC so easy…
Gomi could possibly be the most over-rated fighter to date…talk about a fall from grace….

by jin on Jan 4, 2009 1:08 PM EST reply actions

Overrated? No; his run was unreal and he was the rightful #1 LW. Times change as they do in all divisions but especially in LW which is the most competitive in all MMA>

by R/p on Jan 4, 2009 3:09 PM EST up reply actions

Gomi looked tenative, didn’t want to engage with Kitaoka. The Prodigy would blow both these characters up!
