Chuck Liddell says he'll take the light heavyweight title from Rashad Evans

chuck liddell

Props: Sun Sentinel

Quoteworthy:

"I'll fight anybody they put in front of me as long as it gets me back closer to the title. I have to try to be the best at what am I doing. I want Rashad Evans, he's got the title and I'll take it."

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell -- who was most recently on the wrong end of a vicious knockout at UFC 88: "Breakthrough" courtesy of Rashad Evans -- wants another crack at "Sugar" when asked who he'd like to fight next. That more than likely isn't going to happen anytime soon -- Liddell has lost three of his last four fights. And he no longer appears to be the same world beater who dominated the talent-rich 205-pound division for two years up until 2007. "Iceman" is expected to return at UFC 96 at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, on March 7; however, his opponent remains a mystery. With a win in March, Liddell -- who has been getting some extra training at American Top Team (ATT) recently -- could very well begin to mount his final assault on the light heavyweight hill before calling it a career. Because of his celebrity and drawing power it's not crazy to imagine that two impressive wins could get him to the top, regardless of what else is happening in the division. Can he pull it off? Does he have enough gas left in the tank? Has he been surpassed in skill by the other top fighters in the division? Let us hear your opinions in the comments section below.

-Wanderlei wants another shot at Liddell before moving down to Middleweight.

Dean LIster asked the UFC to be released and they agreed. Hew is negotiating with DREAM and Affliction already in hopes of getting a crack at someone like Jacre.

bwahahah~ bad move for lister!!

jacre would mess him up pretty bad.

not a big fan of lister~ i hope to see jacre fight someone better.

I agree (put it in another post but moderated), but what do you gain from going from the best mma organization to another? good call John on the loser of that fight being let go! He says he asked to be let go, but we know different!

by kevin on Jan 5, 2009 12:17 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Pretty pathetic. Jacare will outwrestle him and can probly outstrike him.

by NameNotRequired on Jan 5, 2009 3:36 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Kev: I agree. I think he ask for his release before being FIRED!!!

NO Doubts Jacre will eat him alive!

He also asking to fight Jorge Santiago! I would think the winner of the Sengfoku Grand Prix would have bigger fish to fry than Lister.

By the way, not to be biased, but I cant stand Lister, He is one of my least favorite fighters. He reminds me of B*tch a$$ Royler Gracie!

come on man chuck still has a chuck v wanderlei no2 in him and he still has to have a fight with kurt angle(joke). not to mention another fight with keith jardine and a fight with brandon vera or shogun. come on he shouldnt retire yet
that said he aint gonna beat rashad or rampage

i for one was never a chuck fan but what i want to know is where are all the chuck fans right now? the guy has 3 losses in 2 years and now he’s a lepher. what ever happened to loyalty. this is only directed at former champ nut huggers who hopped of a bandwagon once their hero was bested a couple of times. if you like gsp now and he loses to bj, anderson and alves in his next 3 fights (which i believe he will) are you gonna say he should give it up? be honest you fickle bastards… you know who you are.

by jonsey on Jan 4, 2009 11:02 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

spot on i was never a big fan but i dont think he should retire. he still can fight so let him fight. in fact id be closer to saying wanderlei should retire! wanderlei is getting hurt too badly these days

by the heat on Jan 4, 2009 11:20 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That’s just what happens man. In the fight game a fight is a big portion of your season. Losing a fight is like an NBA team dropping 20 games. He’s lost what…3 out of his last 4? That’s terrible, I don’t care who he used to be, he’s not the best man for the job anymore. If GSP loses 3 straight he’ll be in the same position Chuck’s in.

by ja434650 on Jan 4, 2009 11:22 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

you know what actually- i can SO see chuck vs Brendon Verra, why cuz its a easy win, both fighters are coming off loses, and realisticly chuck could knock him out COLD, just cuz of the style. so that would make everyone say"he’s back to his old self" then give him again to keith Jardine, (keith has a very weak chin) this time he just has to not chase him and he’ll get a title shot WATCH!! im calling it now,

by ricky on Jan 4, 2009 11:38 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

so your the kind of guy who liked the bulls in the 90’s and the celtics now cause there hot huh? you see what i’m saying? if he wins his next 3, which he totally could, would you like him again? it’s like the wandy lovers who didn’t give page a chance and then after he got ktfo said he wasn’t the same man he was in pride and he should retire! if you don’t like rashad now but he beats machida page and shogun (which he wont)are you gonna swing from sugga’s testes?

by jonsey on Jan 4, 2009 11:42 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i have always been a fan of liddell, and cant wait for his next fight, some of whom are reporting a franklin vs liddell fight, regardless if franklin beats hendo or not!

rashad could beat everyone in the UFC and i still wont like that cocky clown

by brendan on Jan 5, 2009 1:36 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i completely agree with jonesy, but its like that with every fighter. Chuck was the fighter everybody loved when he was knocking every body who stepped in front of him cold for two straight years, and now that he has faced a coupld of loses to top fighter such as number 1 and 2 ranked lhw evans and jackson, and his other loss is to top ten ranked jardine, its not like he is losing to scrubs out there. He fights the best every time out and puts on exciting fights he is a ambassador of the sports, a sure-fire hall a famer and a legend in mma. He loses a couple of fights and all of the sudden he is a nobody? i dont get it. I HATE BANDWAGON JUMPERS!!!

by matt on Jan 5, 2009 1:56 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I was actually thinking where are all the die hard Matt Hughes fans who used to slag of GSP and BJ. Now that Hughes is past is see by date and the rats have left that ship, are they now sailing ship GSP or ship BJ Penn. I picked Liddel to lose against Jardine and Rashad and am not particularly fussed what he does next. Status or no status before Soko got booted I though that he should fight either him Houston, or Vera, but they will obviously put him where the money can be made, and where he can maintain his ticket selling status.

easy Jonesy with this ball licking- im not a chuck fan at all im stating the facts, cuz of his name and draw power by winning his next 2 fights against weak fighters, he’ll get the hype he needs and will get a title shot.

by jonsey on Jan 5, 2009 12:29 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

as a responce to ade, im a big fan of hughes, bj, and gsp, and will never go against them…which means a lot of welterweight fights have kinda sucked for me recently, i just shout for the underdog at any given point in the fight, then promptly become depressed when the winner is called

by connor on Jan 5, 2009 7:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

jonsey, you think Chuck could win his next 3 and GSP will lose his next 3, time to open up the bottle of reality pills. Take a handfull.

by Gord on Jan 5, 2009 10:38 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

chuck will always have a chance against any fighter the guy has ko power. He is not as fast as he used to be, and i don’t think he will ever be the champ again cause I don’t think he can win consistently. I don’t think he should retire cause I rather see chuck fight than a Lyoto fight any day. So due most of the fans look at the ratings this guy produces. As long as he and Wanderlei put on good shown their will be a demand for them. After all UFC is a business why fire or retire your money maker.

by TKO on Jan 5, 2009 12:02 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Chuck has been on the card for 4 of the top 10 grossing UFC PPV’s of all time. Dana will get him a fight he can win next. Then Chuck will have to win another against someone good to “earn” a title shot. Dana would definitely like at least 2 more big pay days via The Iceman.

by Vic Mackey on Jan 5, 2009 1:16 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Since when did you have to “earn” a title shot? Did you already forget Brock Lesnar is a UFC champion?

thats what he meant with the “earn” sarcasm

by brendan on Jan 5, 2009 2:40 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I think Chuck has a few fights left. You guys need to remember…GSP,Randy,Forrest,Rampage,Urijah, have all lost and Been knocked out. So, I would’nt count chuck out yet. But hey, thats just my opinion.

by EIGH8T TCO on Jan 5, 2009 12:25 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Besides Randy all those fighters are still in their primes and age has nothing to do with it…Chuck just looks like his best days are behind him….he has lost his ko power, ability to take a good punch(he used to take bombs on the chin and still keep coming= Belfort and Overeem fights) and punching speed is wayyyy down. Yes I can say all this becuase I’m a Chuck fan but reality is what it is……

by Robert(1) on Jan 5, 2009 9:19 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Robert I agree, I am a die hard Chuck fan, but dang! He used to take BOMBS on his face and not even block them or anything and just keep coming at you trying to KO you. Now after years of that harsh abuse, his chin seems to have faded and he has been knocked down or out in his last 4 fights from SINGLE punches. He couldn’t put Wanderlei away and Rampage did it in one shot. I love to watch Chuck fight, and he still has ability to win fights, he just needs to chane up his gameplan big time and learn some STRIKING defense….forget the takedown defense we know he can get back up easily if taken down anyway. Good luck to Chuck! He’ll need it these days!

Agree! If he fights Shogun in March and beats him then wins another fight probably at UFC 100, he’ll have a title shot at the year end show in December. Like you said though I just don’t see him winning two in a row at this point in his career.

Alistair Overeem is in negotiations right now with the UFC and Affliction at the moment. Would be nice if the UFC got him to add to the horrible Hw division. And Cro Cop has said that he will fight 3 more times in dream and have one final match after that in the UFC. Hell Chuck there you go right there. Chuck vs Cro Cop, loser to never fight again for the UFC. Damn thats sad im saying that since im a Chuck fan

by brendan on Jan 4, 2009 11:43 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

How bout Lesnar . . .2 fight win streak, right. Werdum was on a 3 or 4 fight win streak before he departed, Nog had won 2 in a row til last week, as well, Randy also was on a 2 fight win streak til last month. . . Besides Fedor, AA, Sylvia (who was just in the UFC and fans hate him so i dont think you mean him, right?) CroCop (who couldnt win in the UFC at all) BabyFace Assasin, and Hong Man Choi, what Top HVWT’s arent in the UFC??? . . . Not to mention that only Fedor of the names i named is a top HVWT sooo . . . Come on B, you’re rediculous man, the HVWT division is fine, complain about something else cause you’re just treading water with this conversation.
Lesnar
Couture
Nog
Mir
Herring
Kongo
Carwin
Dos Santos
Gonzaga
Hardonk
Cain
O’Brian
Hell, even Dan Severn is still part of the UFC HVWT roster. But yea, Sylvia is whats missing in the UFC, or maybe Babyface, they can both come back and do some roids and take on all comers. Theirs a reason these guys arent in the UFC, figure it out bro.

by ( (Adam G) ) on Jan 5, 2009 1:45 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

ummm you should read before you comment, i said MORE than a two fight win streak… and i never said anything about the best heavyweights being outside the UFC, but since you brought it up… overeem, arlovski, fedor, barnett, hell even dave “pee wee” herman could probably make a run at the title in the UFC… oh and one more thing, werdum was only on a two fight win streak as well, get your facts straight

AA would be nice but Barnette no thanks, i dont like roid users. Fedor should come on down and show he doesnt use roids either, come to somewhere that they sanction fights with a commision and prove it. CC . . . Do i really need to say anything about this guy, wasnt he gonna grapple some 12 year old Gracie for no real reason recently, nough said . . . And besides Fedor, you actualy think any of those guys will put up a real fight to Lesnar . . .

by ( (Adam G) ) on Jan 5, 2009 4:46 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

youre delirious if you dont think overeem couldnt knock lesnar out on the feet or put him in a guillotine

by brendan on Jan 5, 2009 6:21 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

If you’re going to question Fedor on the roids topic, you damn well better question Lesnar too. As far as I know they aren’t able to test for HGH either. Adam, you’re crazy. Besides there are like 7 very competitive HW’s that would be on par or above pretty much everyone in the UFC’s HW division.

Shit man, I’ll stand up any day and say “I am a Chuck Liddell fan”. He ruled his weight class for nearly three years & helped make the sport as big as it is today. However, I think that “Punch you in the ovaries” hit the nail on the head. Its not his age, its his life style, hes been living the “hollywood lifestyle” & it just caught up to him!! Im holding out hope beyond hope that he can get a grip before what time he has left passes him by. I hope he comes back in a big way because Im gonna be in the crowd to watch him beat someones ass in Columbus at UFC 96. Wake the hell up Chuck!

i like it that he is training somewhere else . i think that was a big problem for him always having the same trainer and the same fight plan. he could get away with fighting as the “hands down” favorite when there weren’t many strikers in the division but now he can’t strike with complete disregard for his opponents anymore. I don’t think he’s washed up as much as i think others have surpassed him and he’s been too stubborn to improve on other areas that are important. He needs to keep them hands up when he throws a punch

This quote is taken out of context. If you actually watch the interview, you’ll see that Chuck is actually answering which fight he would most like and he answers that he’ll TAKE a fight with Rashad. He doesn’t actually mean that he’ll take the title from Rashad. If you take his words literally then you have the interpretation of the article but the way he says it, it’s clear that he means he’ll take a fight with Rashad, not take the title.

tho Chuck is on the tail end of his stellar career there are still some interesting match-ups out there for him:
Chuck/Shogun
Chuck/Jardine II
Chuck/Forrest (especially now with both coming off losses to the same guy)
Chuck/Anderson Silva
Chuck/Wandy II
Chuck/Sokodgui (too bad they let him go, itd be perfect)
Chuck/Franklin
Chuck/Henderson
Chuck/Vera

Even if chuck is on the downhill slide, he is STILL fun to see fight, cuz he will always have the KO power! id rather see chuck fight and lose, then to watch any fight with Machida in it! so what if hes lost 3 of his 4 last fights, he still had a big part in making UFC what it is today, because of the huge drawing power he has. Chuck will know when to hang up the gloves, until then, ill wish him the best of luck and STILL buy the PPV’s when he’s on the card!

by thewhat on Jan 4, 2009 11:15 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

regardless of whether or not he thinks he’ll get another crack at it in the near future, he’s got to face the facts. Very few guys have 2 primes. He should consider calling it a career without too much delay. His KO power has been missing in his last few fights and his hand speed and awkward style leave gaping holes in his stand up. Don’t end up another ken shamrock.

by Fidel Cashflow on Jan 4, 2009 11:18 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Chucky needs to utilize his takedowns! Chuck has awesome takedown ability, but doesn’t use it often enough. He’s still relying too heavily on his ability to induce very unpleasant sleep time for his opponents! He should start taking people down for some heavy ground and pound! And even now, his takedown defense is second to none! Chuck’s got quite a few a@@ whippins’ left in him! He’s just gonna have to find a different way to dish em’ out!

But do I think he will do it. Probably not. I dont think he should retire but I think he has to change up his gameplan if he wants to ecome the champ again…

by Brett on Jan 4, 2009 11:55 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

It funny how quick people turn on fighter. Come on people loosing a few fights does not make u a has been or over the hill. These guys are fighting the best, anyone can loose at anytime or even a few in a row. Couture lost a few in a row and everyone thought he was done, then he comes back and wins a few, and everyone is oh wow he is the best and he can beat Fedor… BJ Penn lost a few in a row, did that mean he was done? No so everyone stop over reacting, Its not like chuck was just getting the crap kicked out of him the whole time, with Rampage he got cought, then a split decision, and with evans I think he was so dominating him and chasing him that led to his over confident that he left himself open to get KTFO, but its not like it wasn’t competitive and he was just getting dominated, where its time to call it a carrier. All I’m trying to say is that all it takes is a few wins and he would be the greatest ever again. if he quit, and came back few years later and won few fights the loosing streak would be forgotten, and he be the greatest ever again.

by Riskreturngroup on Jan 4, 2009 11:55 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

There’s some truth to what you say. But do you think he’s the same fighter he was a couple years ago? I don’t, but I think he’s still dangerous. He was 20-3 as R.e.s. mentions before losing his belt. He had this unbeatable stigma. Even if he miraculously obtained the belt again, I think the unbeatable reputation is gone. I don’t think people would jump back on his nuts like before. My solution is to not write the guy off, but just lower your expectations and enjoy him as a gatekeeper.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Jan 5, 2009 12:15 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Chuck Liddell isn’t a gatekeeper at 205. I think that’s Rich Franklin’s job now.

I agree but Chuck got ko’ed with one pounch or floored one punch where before he would take bombs on chin and keep coming forward, also not having a ko in a while is not a good indication. Bj is still in his prime along with Rampage, Randy is just Randy.

chuck should go to heavyweight. First because he has lost hand speed and cant throw hands with a rampage/evans/or Sypda Silva. Secondly, Chuck could contend at heavyweight, he is big friggin dude for LHW. He walks around at like 230 plus these days..Chuck vs. Lesnar would be a moneymaker for the UFC. He could fight couture again (if he did that it would be overseas, that fight would be more marketable there). Or hell throw him to Junior “Mortal Kombat Uppercuts” Dos Santos. Just like Wanderlei silva will probably move to middle weight to give him an advantage..Chuck will should move to HW where he would be the best striker again.

Your football fans. Go find another sport to bitch about. Any Chuck fight is still fun to watch, regardless of who wins. What? Who cares if the guy is past his prime, does that make it any less exciting to watch? I guess every fighter in every fight has to be at their absolute prime for you people to enjoy it. Really guys, you sound like a bunch of women bitching about their hair. I long for the days when nobody knew what this sport was and I rented old UFC’s from my porno……..I mean video store.

Rashad Evans isn’t worried about Chuck who has been getting some extra training at American Top Team. He is trying to take the light heavyweight title away from him. Rashad has get good coach corner’s Greg Jackson’s MMA. He gonna to knock his ass out again. I am sure…

Chuck has always been entertaining to watch, win or lose! That being said, I’d still like to see him get his shot at the title if he can put together a couple wins.

It’s funny how people write a fighter off who has went through a few losses.(Should Wanderlei retire?) Yes Chuck has seen his better days go buy, but he lost to the former champ and the current champ. Its not like he losing to bad competition. Heck anyone in that division can lose on any given night. Thats why I don’t see a champ having a very long run with the title, to many good fighters. Chuck should keep going till he feels he is done. It’s not like he was getting killed in any of those fights, he got caught happens to the best.

It’s funny how many people were huggers when he was champ, then Rampage beat him and everyone wrote Chuck off. Then Rampage lost then he sucked. Some people just have no clue!!!

I think Chuck was extremely over rated…I always said it but he was way too much of a fan favorite for anyone to even consider it, people probably still won’t consider it. For me, I’ll never call the guys he fought during his reign “cans”, but they definately seemed handpicked for him. He always got the match up he needed, a grappler who had a less than stellar stand up game… During his reign he beat Coture twice (which I think had a lot to do with Randy aging and losing some explosiveness and agility thus moving up a weight class, heavyweights aren’t as quick and explosive as light heavys. He beat Tito twice (never had a stand up game whatsoever) He beat Jeremy Horn (in the same boat as tito when it comes to throwing strikes) All these guys were dudes who couldn’t hit back. Chuck has that awesome sprawl so they couldn’t take him down. But he kept getting those grapplers who weren’t known for striking…give him guys who hit back and you’ve got two losses to rampage, a loss to a more explosive coture, a loss to Jardine, a win against a wanderlei who isn’t the same ax murder, and a loss to evans. Thats 1-5 against guys who can stand and trade…Chuck was a very good fighter…But only truly dominate against fighters with skillsets that matched up well for him.

i like how you discount his two knock outs of randy but count the one time randy beat chuck.

any way would u consider vitor belfort a striker? how about allistar overeem?

by matt on Jan 5, 2009 2:10 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I never discounted any of his wins…I knew bias people couldn’t read this with an open mind…but I said it wasn’t the same Randy that he fought the first time….and you are right about vitor and overeem so that makes him 3-5 with two out of the three wins being decisions…and 3 out of his losses being either tko or ko…like I said he was still a great fighter…just only truely dominant against a certain skill set, he isn’t the guy people made him out to be…and thats why the game has finally passed him by…he can’t beat these well rounded fighters the game has now.

by dnth8me4this on Jan 5, 2009 2:27 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I dont know if my first response went through so I’ll respond again to matt….I counted Couture the first time for a reason…I said he was aging and lost some of the explosiveness he beat chuck with the first time…though I should give him some kudos for being the first guy to knock him out…but even with all that he is still known for grappling…and yeah I should have counted overeem and Vitor my bad on that…that still means he is 3-5 against quality fighters that are strikers…with two of the 3 wins being decisions…and 3 of the 5 losses being either tko or ko.

by dnth8me4this on Jan 5, 2009 2:43 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Does Wandi not hit back??? So Chuck beats him but its not the same Wandi, and with Randy, same thing as what Matt said, again to you, its not the same Randy? But then Randy goes out and beats a HUGE Sylvia and a game Gonzaga plus gives Brock the first run for his money since Mir. But yea, not the same, old man huh . . . Make sense when you come to MMAmania and give your opinion, unless thats your thing, being wrong.

And i couldnt give a sh*t about chuck or the entire LHWT division really, im a BJ Penn fan, the other fighters are great but i wouldnt call myself their fan. I think chuck is one dimensional, 5 years ago or today, he sucks! Any fighter like that SUCKS!! He would still fight the same if he lost all his limbs except his right hand and was in a wheel chair, overhand right coming at cha, LAME! OUTDATED! OLD SCHOOL!! So dont think im a chuck fan, just calling you on your BS.

Ok I will say it I still believe Chuck is he best. he just has got to keep his hands up both times he got ko’d or tko’d one hand was being thrown and the other was at his hip. If he keeps his hands up chuck will be ok!!!!!!

by DBG on Jan 5, 2009 2:03 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I always thought chuck was very over rated but he was too much of a favorite for anyone to even have hear what I had to say with out some extreme bias. I will never call the guys Chuck fought during his “reign” cans, but he did continue to get the match ups that favored him. He would go up against grapplers with less than stellar stand up games. During his run he beat Randy twice (an aging Couture who didn’t have the explosivness and quickness he had the first time they fought, which he won, so he moved up a weight class) He beat tito twice (no stand up game whatsoever) He beat Jeremy Horn (in the same boat as Tito when it comes to striking) He always got that match up against grapplers not known for striking at all, and often these guys didn’t even try to take him down, probably because they knew his sprawl was too good anyway. When you put him up agianst guys who hit back he’s got Two losses to Rampage, a loss to a younger more explosive couture, A loss to Keith Jardine, A win against Wanderlei but not the same axe murderer from pride, and a loss to Evans…That puts him at 1-5 against top opponents that are also strikers…Don’t get me wrong he was a great fighter…just to me he was never truly dominant…only dominant against a certain skill set.

I’ve watched this interview , and that quote is taken completly out of context. He said it like ‘well, Rashads at the top of the pile so if I could choose anyone too fight next, of course it’d be him like any other light heavy would’

Not the ‘Im Chuck, i’ll beat him for my title asap’ way that people have taken it.

by Jay on Jan 5, 2009 2:08 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Your comment is over rated. No disrespect. Chuck fought the best the UFC had to offer at the time. I am a huge fan of Chuck win or lose. I think he has a few good fights, but he has had trouble with strikers, but That is more of the way he carries his hands. styles make fights and he was taylor made to destroy a grappler. They could not stand with him and they could not get past his takedown defense. Chuck got to sloppy with his hands and he has paid for keeping them low and not being more technical. I am intersted to see if he is working on a few things as he has said or if he will go back to same old Chuck and hold them low and wait for that right hand to land, and possibly pay for it.

by miles on Jan 5, 2009 2:17 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I agree that he fought the best the UFC had to offer, which is lucky for him they were all grapplers, but that doens’t disprove anything I’ve been saying. But you are kind of defending what I’ve said by saying he was taylor made to destroy grapplers has had trouble with strikers…thats pretty much all I’m saying. He is a great fighter and dominant against grapplers…but less than stellar against strikers which is why I’ve always felt he was over rated. I’m not a GSP fan in the slightest but a guy like him is truely dominant against any type of fighter, same with Anderson Silva, and Fedor…those guys are truely dominant

No offence to Chuck but earn your shots dont just expect them every two fights.

You just lost to Rashad, fight Forrest. Fight Rampage. Fight Jardine again. Do something that makes people say “DAMN Chuck really needs a title shot!” Cause I have not heard that in a while.

by DirtyML on Jan 5, 2009 2:19 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Chuck is still my favorite fighter. Win or lose, it doesn’t change the fact. I think he can beat Rashad. He just needs a good game plan and to use all of his tools, not just his right hand bomb.

If chuck fights at UFC 96, then I’m going to be there.

by natedogg77 on Jan 5, 2009 2:20 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

As stacked as that division is. Two fights could earn you a shot. Depending on who wins and loses. I feel Rampage should get the next shot. Then who is next?

Just imagine if Shogun was to lose and machida. Who would be next? Winner of Franklin and Hendo fight thiago for number one Contender Fight. The winner of Hendo and franklin is suppose to do tuf so that puts then out of the mix. Not just saying it will be Chuck, but one or two big wins can give anyone a shot.

Don’t underestimate The Iceman! He’s distancing himself away from the overrated and out of touch Pit camp and John Hackelman. He has a few fights left in him and I think he can do a lot of damage to a lot of these guys in the light heavyweight division. The beginning will be in March, let’s see where it goes from there!

by Sofa-King-Toasty on Jan 5, 2009 3:14 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I agree that chuck may be able to step his game up now he is training elsewhere than just at the pit. For a long time he was the number one striker and youd have thought Chuck would have woken up to the fact that this had changed since his k.o loss to Rampage. Sadly he didnt and hopefully since being k.o’d by Rashad, someone who was considered an underdog going into the Lidell fight, he will be able to work much more on keeping his hands up while striking as he no longer has the reflexes he had when he was younger to keep up his counter punching style. However i feel he should keep away from the top tier of LHW’s until he has at least 2 wins under his belt perhaps against Vera and Jardine and then i feel he should fight for the number one contendership.

i WAS a huge Chuck fan and I STILL am a huge Chuck fan!! Agreed though that many donkeys jump ship all the time, glory hunters!!

I for one truly believe that Chuck still has the beating of most of the lightheavy division, and i believe if he sticks to a game plan he wins easier, his biggest problem is all of you guys, the idiots that boo at fights and have no idea what a fight consists of!!

chuck for once do what you have to do to win fights, dont try and crowd please cause lets face it, when you get caught now and again which everyone does, these idiots are just waiting to shoot you down, like they enjoy seeing a great go down like that. You are still the man and im sure whoever steps in there with you will still be intimidated thats for sure, just get a game plan and stick to it, KO’s are nice but you dont need them every fight!!

Good luck Chuck I hope you back to where you deserve to be!!

by mo on Jan 5, 2009 7:33 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

good post. Chuck does respond to crowd displeasure which usually leads to him leaving himself open to a counter as he moves in. I hate when fans boo just because the fighters are being cautious and feeling each other out in the early goings of a fight, especially against that of a KO striker.

I would love to see Chuck fight my man Forrest at UFC 96, that would definately have me buying a ticket.

"I’ll fight anybody they put in front of me as long as it gets me back closer to the title. I have to try to be the best at what am I doing. I want Rashad Evans, he’s got the title and I’ll take it."

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell

NOW re- read the quote again and read this part very carefully, now say it out loud, now say it aloud as if you here chuck, with chucks voice and body motions emphasized, method acting damn it! Ok so ya see we all ain’t never heard a "Chucky" talked like this a’ before a, now a, would a, could a should aaaaaaaa!!!! /. Nope Chuckey is a changed man shall we say or is it that technical striking has finally evolved past him, and now he goes to (ATT) American Top Team???? ATT took guys with a ground game and made them better more well rounded but they all have a great jiu jitsu moves and they all are from Brazil mostly. Yeah! I can’t wait to see Liddell " AMA-PLATING " out guys in 205!!!! They call him da ice man cuz he puts you out COLD!!!!
Chucks better days are behind him. I mean it Chuck, it’s downhill from here just like Wandi. Yeah two guys that NOWADAYS in the UFC look like they just two new school brawlers with a little more technique in their brawling style. This is especially true for WANDI!!! Add this to Chucks back peddling bike legs with low held hands at the waist, and that right cocked somewhere, "ALL THE TIME., and a I’m not going on the wet slimy dirty ground attitude and take down defense like Chuck, then …THERE YOU GO!
Chins have a life too!! Look at boxing: a boxers chin worsens with time say all the possible data, and head injury inquiries, which baffle me really! How can you quantify and qualify on a Brutal strike thrown with either leg, or a fist, a knee, an elbow, an overhand right, a left counter hook, and KO KTFO we go!. We can just see it. We see that WANDI is a one-punch knockout from here on out. He can’t take a punch anymore. HE flails his arms in a cyborg windmill of left and right hooks I guess is what he looks like. WANDI learn to punch straight!!! Oh yeah and get rid of your EURO trash pride roid days by changing your, stupid glow stick shacking, Webster Hall Dance Music Making, and X-TASY Taking entrance song and FLUSHING IT! And Chuck. He has no gas tank, no ground Game, no submissions (even he knows only one, the RNC). His seemingly former or co-trainer’s name is even a "HACK" JOHN HACKLEMEN, who look s really more like a 60’s biker dude you really don’t wanna mess with, or a former member of ZZ top dressed in a GI! Chuck had only other people at his gym because people thought if I do what chuck does, I’ll be great!!!! Who was chuck even sparring with? Probably a 17-year-old member of the "HACK JIT SU" class, and "Chuck looks great!" CHUCK is DONE in the cage. Now he trains at ATT? ATT has not seen anyone this old since some old Brazilian BJJ’er took his sorry broke arse from poor Brazil and moved it here in the USA to make a lil’ money, ya know what I’m a saying?"…Until my next little secret….

Some of the comments are unbelievable, band wagon jumpers all over this site, if liddell wins the belt then everybody, would be like Liddell is the best, look what happened to Randy Couture, he got KO twice by Liddell then he retired and came back, Liddell is not anywhere near 45 years of age, plus Liddell has been one dimensional, but you see I believe Liddell knows he has to change up some things, if we see Liddell do some wrestling, some take downs, work his ground game, I am telling you, and the fact he working at another camp right now suggests big change, Against Rampage he made a mistake and got caught, against Jardine got outscored and probably underestimated Jardine, mental mistake, against Rashad, they both threw punches at the same time, Rashad got there quicker, but if Liddell would have landed his first Rashad would have been KO, plus Liddell was winning that fight, the LHW division is scary, anything can happen and everybody in that division all have the potential to be on top, plus many of these guys are evoled martial artists and way younger then Liddell, Liddell win streak before he got tagged by rampage was impressive, even wanderlai still has a chance, he just got caught, I do not like a Liddell vs Forrest match up at the moment if either one of them loses that sucks, but that is thw way it right, I hope Chuck comes back, I am disappointed that Chuck has lost 3 out of 4, but I do not thin he is done yet, cut out the limelight, the partier, the interviews, get some top training partners , mix up your game and remember who you are iceman and I foresee dominance again in the Light heavyweight division by the iceman, just like ramapage said, if liddell does that he will be singing were taking over, oh yeah final comment, GO GSP

I totally agree that Chuck’s past his prime! The thing is, he was so dominant in his prime, that being past it may have only brought him down on an even level with his opponents. Meaning Chuck may still be as good as almost everyone in the LHW division. But, he needs to realize this and loose his “dominant attitude” when he walks into the ring! A confident winning attitude is good to have, because he can still win any fight. But, fighters at LHW have progressed and some of them are too good to Dominate. He must respect their ability to take his best and keep coming! Mix it up, Chuck! You can do this!

I was and still am an ICEMAN fan, but see with both eyes open. He was the man for a long time and its clear to me that he is not anymore. Dont get me wrong I think Chuck still kick some ass and if he were to beat Rashad I would not have to jump on or off any wagon as I have always been and always will be an ICEMAN fan regardless(in fanatsy league I would still take Rashad if this fight ever happens). You cant stay on top forever (unless your Fedor), so dont take it so personally man. He used to destroy people now people knock him out and personally everytime it happens Im like “oh no not again, I hate to see Chuck get KO’d”. Its a newer, younger, stronger, faster group of guys moving up the ranks and taking over, if you watch, it would be clear to you. You need to be on top of your game mentally & physically or you will not suceed at this point & Chuck isnt doing that anymore. So its not like band wagon jumping (as you would put it) as much as it is just stating the obvious.

I couldn’t agree with Cory more. Chuck is one of the best fighters in the 205lb division and anyone that says otherwise probably has only been watching MMA for the last 8 months. Chuck has always been a force because people didn’t want to stand and bang with him. A slugger is not going to match well with Chuck were as a fighter like Rashad didn’t just wade into Chuck throwing crazy punches. If you watch the KO you will see that Chuck could have gotten away from that punch, easy! He chose to go for the KO counter like he always does (probably thinking he could take a shot for Rashad) and it dropped him. I think he knows that he has to change his game up or he’s going to be nothing but another Tito :P. Cant wait to see his next fight.

by MickiB on Jan 5, 2009 2:36 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

the problem is, he HASN’T changed his style…not after getting knocked out by rampage, not after losing a boring standup battle against jardine, and he won’t change his style after getting KTFO against evans. he needs to do more than stand and bang, but it looks like the old “can’t teach an old dog new tricks” scenario.

by B_Hos on Jan 5, 2009 3:17 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

MickiB.. Chuck was one of the best fighters at LHW, he is not anymore.. Tito Ortiz has more left in his career than Chuck does, Chuck is too onedimensional and he’s almost 40 when he fights someone who can strike he loses cause his poor technique and his poor defense gets exposed and he’s lost some speed and power over the years..

Personally I would like to see Chuck fight S.Bonnar. If Chuck still “has it” he will gain some much needed confidence. If Bonnar wins he gains some momentum. Moreover,if Chuck looks good Bonnar really does not loose much clout. If Chuck loses he knows it is time to hang it up.

I am a Chuck fan and still hoping he has a few wins left and would be pumped if he went on a tear. It is disheartening that people jump ship so quickly when fighters hit hard times but hey, fair-weather fans are everywhere and they always will be. People like to root for winners.

Me personally I will always root for Chuck hands down even if he’s fighting Godzilla. I hope the UFC finds a good fight for him that people would like to see. If he can string a couple wins together people will start jumping back on the bandwagon once again. Time will tell.
