Shaping up to be a decent card. I don’t know about the Main Event. Its a toss up to me. Since everyone is hating on Mir, I guess I’ll go with him, but the only prediction I’m making is Mir by sub, or Lesnar by tko.

And please Matt, FINISH SERRA!!! Serra has/had NO business in being talked about among the elite of the WW division. He is taking up space on cards for all I care. This one time I’ll use a quote from John and say I could care less if Matt Serra ever fights again. Hughes will tool this fool. Serra has NO chance, and he already cashed in the upset of his career. Would this fight have ANY relevance if Serra did not do TUF? No. Would Serra have ANY chance if he didn’t do TUF? No. Hughes by tko, sub, or decision.

Sherk/Edgar should be FIREWORKS.

Irvin/McFedries ends with _ by Knockout of the Night.

I think you should add mir or lesnar by decision to really cover all your bases.

by Duff on Jan 22, 2009 2:01 PM EST up reply actions

You think so? I did at first, but thought against it. Oh well, Mir by Decision or (T)KO and Brock by Submission (lol btw) or UD. There. Now I whatever happens I can say I told ya so! Unless its a draw.. crap.

by Synyster [[2009 Year of Gegard Mousasi]] on Jan 22, 2009 3:21 PM EST up reply actions

Ok, revised picks are:
Brock
Hughes
Sherk
Nover
Kos
Irvin
Roop
Yoshida
Alexander
Barry
I’m thinking about going to this. There is not really any fight that I wouldnt want to see.

by Synyster on Feb 28, 2009 7:52 PM EST up reply actions

haha! good call… no seriously though I gotta go with mir.

by Mark on Feb 21, 2009 2:02 AM EST up reply actions

While I agree that Serra is not the best fighter ever… ummm… whats wrong him being on TUF? Forrest Griffin (former champ) was on TUF. So was Rashad (champ), so was Jardine, and Koscheck, kenny Florian, Chris Leben, Diego Sanchez, Joe Stevenson, Michael Bisping, Matt Hamill, Joe Lauzon, Nate Diaz, Mac Danzig, bla bla bla………….But maybe im missing your point.

by Dave on Feb 3, 2009 1:27 AM EST up reply actions

He was on the “I had my chance to become a successful fighter but I sucked in the UFC so I came here” season of TUF. The UFC reject season. Those other guys where all up and comers. Nothing against them. I just think TUF 4 was a joke and hasn’t done anything for anyone except for Cote. Other than Serra’s 2 fights since of course.

And there is 3 sides to this fight with Hughes, and everyone is 100% on one of 3. Hughes side, Serra side, and Octagon falls and kills both side. I’m with Hughes

by Synyster [[2009 Year of Gegard Mousasi]] on Feb 4, 2009 10:05 AM EST up reply actions

If this was the main event I’d go with Octagon failure side but I do kind of want to see Mir/Lesnar.

Time will tell, but i really think Brock will not lose another fight and will retire as champ before he turns his attention to the big screen

by Gareth on Feb 27, 2009 8:18 PM EST up reply actions

I think McFedries is going to have another win against a decent apponent like against Eastman and then lose his next 3 fights.

im gonna be the next heavyweight champ belive it

Lesnar vs Mir: I don’t know how you can go against Lesnar. Dude is a machine…. A machine that spits out douche bags but a machine nonetheless. Highly doubtfull that Mir gets the sub again. I am by no means a Brock the cock fan, but dude is MASSIVE! How he didn’t make it in the NFL I’ll never know?
Hughes vs Serra: ZZZZZ
Sherk vs Edgar: WOW this should be a slugfest. Possible fight of the night right there.
Irvin vs McFedries: Irvin looks HUGE at 205; How ripped is this guy gonna look at 185? And you’re right someone is getting KO’d in this one.

by redrhino24 on Jan 21, 2009 11:20 PM EST reply actions

My picks:

Lesnar—-By way of Dana paying off Mir since UFC fights are sometimes rigged

Hughes—-TKO since Serra sucks

Sherk—-Decision

Irvin—-by way of KTFO of McFedries

Kaplan—-by way of whatever cuz Roop sucks

by ~MMA~GURU~ on Jan 22, 2009 3:24 AM EST reply actions

rigged? LOL Brock is for real Mir won’t get a leg this time. Brock By the same way he should of last time TKO. Mir is tough but not tough enough.

by Beaver on Feb 28, 2009 5:57 PM EST up reply actions

Why because Brock is preparing for the Kneebar?? He was preparing for it the last time to myfriend!!!

by belfort_fan on Mar 18, 2009 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Brock’s inexperience is what allowed Mir to get the sub last time. How many experienced guys would have left their leg in there like that against a Jiu-Jitsu black belt.As a person Mir is a douche but in terms of skill I think he’s excellent.I hope he wins for the sake of the sport coz I really think Lesnar is too inexperienced to carry a whole division, but it’s gonna be a big ask of Mir to do it.

I cant start thinking about UFC 98, when we still have UFN and UFC 97 coming up. I hate it when we start covering events so early, because my the time the event rolls around, I am sick of talking about it. I will be staying away from this thread…anyone have anything to say to me, you can find me on the other threads…Im out!

fyi: that JOhn post above was not me! U will never hear me rooting for Mir, thats for sure!

by john on Mar 25, 2009 10:10 AM EDT up reply actions

yes brock lesnar did lose to mir by a BIG mistake! BUT go back to shortly after the fight started, brock was killing the guy! pounding him on the side of the head, the fight was stoped . what did mir do he said he hit him in the back of the head. wow (he should not have turned his head to receive the hit!! to me that was submitting! so the baby mir cryed foul.in that fight i think it was 2 against 1 mir @ the ref. against brock lesnar.(i rest my case)

by fran stein on Jan 25, 2009 9:25 AM EST up reply actions

True it was stopped, but in case you didn’t notice, Lesnar had him back in the same place and still lost. Its not like Mir was like “oh can’t get taken down again” he still went to the ground and so any ground Mir might have gotten from the ref’s stoppage was taken back real quick. And there was Mir, with a knee bar from hell, making Lesnar tap.

by Anthony on Jan 28, 2009 1:38 PM EST up reply actions

I say Mir wins this one by submission again. As far as Mir being paid off by Dana… doubt that will happen… Mir wants it too bad for that. You can say that their last fight was BS because they got stood up but it was a clear violation and the ref did the right thing. Lesner showed his inexperience after that several times almost getting arm barred and then finally not recognizing that Mir was working at an ankle lock/knee bar when he swung his legs arounf Lesner’s. Lesner has only foght 4 professional MMA fights going to a decision with Herring and then beating a 45 year old Randy Couture (no offense to Randy). But even in those fight Lesner looked less than impressive… he is just massive. And when he had Randy or Herring on the ground I don’t remember either of them trying too many submission attempts. With Mir Lesner can expect reoeated attempts until he finds himself in something unexpected just as he did last time. I personnally want to see Lesner come out of the gates and try to get Mir to the ground only to find himself in a tight guillitine and tapping out at like 20 seconds into the fight.

by ufcnewbie on Jan 26, 2009 11:05 AM EST reply actions

a lot off ppl agree with you about the ref doing the right thing. hitting the back of the head is in fact a foul. i think a bigger peave (at least for me) is the inconsistency(sp) in actually calling the fouls. i havent watched the even in a while, so i cant remember who, maybe Herb Dean, but there were a number of blows from someone who had their back to the cage to the person who was pushing him. right to the back of their head and not one word was said. deffinately didnt stop the action. yes i agree with the foul but not the way it was handled during the fight. mazzagahti shouldve warned first during the action, just like all the other refs, and he shouldnt have taken a point either. at least not without a first warning.

also agree about lesnar not showing very much skill. for me at least i saw great wrestling and IMPROVED stand up. not good stand up, lol. he has a lot more potential right now and someday it will turn into skill. thats why hes trying to work with the best, to become better

by wingblade on Jan 28, 2009 4:31 PM EST up reply actions

Honestly, in the Mir – Lesnar fight, Mazzagatti(the south park character!) saw the opportunity to get some limelight, he should’ve warned Lesnar before standing them up, then he took a point away (wtf!) and when Brock was tapping, he hardly rushed in to stop the fight. Watch it again and tell me i’m wrong.
Go on Lesnar, revenge is sweeeet!

by Leeboy83 on Jan 29, 2009 8:50 AM EST up reply actions

The same thing with the Joe Lauzon KenFlo fight. The back of Joe’s head was all kinds of fucked up. No points taken. No action stopped. But for Lesnar, “Whoa shit! Uhhhhh, Stop! Stop! Uhhhhhh, One point! One point!!”

by Dave on Feb 3, 2009 1:35 AM EST up reply actions

Have to agree with Mazagatti standing it up when Lesnar hit the back of the head but you’re right dude GSP hit BJ in the back of the head loads of times and HERB DEAN warned him like 4 times but Lesnar got no warning it just got stood up.The only thing I can think for this is that GSP could not see BJ’s head when he was striking so he was not aware he was hitting the back of the head till the ref warned him but Brock had a cclear view.Mir turned his head but Brock hit him like 6 times in the back of the head. After the first 2 or 3 shots he should have changed his striking angle but I agree calls need to be more consistant.

by mearls on Jan 26, 2009 11:59 PM EST reply actions

i think lesnar is going to beat mir, lesnar is a wrestler and everyone knows that wrestlers have a more renowned training ethic so i think that brock will work his jiu jitsu much more for this fight to stay safe. hughes is getting old so i dont think any more of his fights will be exciting and serra will win. then the sherk edgar fight is going to be fight of the night and i hope edgar wins because i train with him up in NJ.

Frank Mir needs to take that fool to school! I don’t care how hard you’ve trained, or who you were in the wwe, noone who has had only 4 pro mma fights, lost 1, should be a World Heavyweght Champion! Its absurd! I think it brings down the meaning, and the status of the UFC championship in general as long as he has that belt. Now they’re saying Fedor and Lesner! C’mon! There are many other fighters in the UFC I’d rather see fight Fedor the this guy! Get that belt away from him Frank, please!

by FlorianFighter on Feb 16, 2009 11:05 PM EST reply actions

FlorianFighter if you had a decent MMA IQ you would realize why Brock is fighting for the title. He is a great wrestler combined with a decent stand up. Add the fact that he is the strongest and yet still on of the fastest fighters, he has great endurance! He’s a Freak a one of a kind fighter! You won’t see this in any other division because the division weight is what the fighters need to weigh and some will be 10 to 15 pounds morethan the weight if they are good at cutting. The average HW is 235ish, Brock is 285 the night he steps in the ring!! He’s a freak with a great work ethic every fighter that has seen him train will tell you he is one of the hardest worker in the UFC if not the hardest. If a fight between him and Fedor does happen it won’t be tell next year and Brock will destroy him.

by Beaver on Feb 28, 2009 6:10 PM EST up reply actions

I’m not saying that Lesner isn’t good, or that he doesn’t have potential to be a legendary fighter in the UFC. But right now he’s not deserving to be a world champion. Most fighters have to win more then 1 in a row to get a title shot, no matter how hard they train. Sure he trains hard….but so do alot of fighters. He lacks experience, and the only reason he’s in this position, is because of his name. Promoters trying to sell the PPV. Not because he works harder then everyone else. It takes more then great wrestling and “decent stand up” to be world HW champion. I’ve been a fan of MMA since UFC 1 in Denver, and the best fighters, the ones deserving to be called champions, are the well rounded fighters. Not just a superior wrestler with freakish size. Lesner may be deserving one day, but not now. Not yet

by FlorianFighter on Mar 2, 2009 11:03 PM EST up reply actions

I see what your getting at FF but your not accurate on your view of Brock. First off wrestling is a huge advantage for a fighter(Hughes, Barnett,Couture,GSP & Evans to name a few) alone his calibure of wrestling combined with decent striking that has KO power is a lethal combo. Yes his submission knowlege & experience is sub par but really he just needs to know how to avoid and defend. If you look at Barnett who is 250 pounds of muscle has done pretty well for himself by simply bring the guy to the mat and controlling his opponent on the ground and GnP or subing him. Now add 35 pounds of muscle, more speed, more strength, better wrestling skills, more KO power to Barnett!! The best fighters in MMA control were the fight is going to take place and Brock has a huge advantage with his wrestling skills, size and strength to control were the fight is going to take place. If you really have been a fan from UFC one how can you even say “the ones deserving to be called champions, are the well rounded”!! Gracie,Chuck,NOG,Hughes,Barfnett…I can go on and on but these guy’s to name a few were great at one thing and if you took that ability away from them they would not be top ten fighters? Being well rounded is good but if your a good wrestler, good boxer, good BJJ you will be able to have more gamplans but if your just a good wrestler and the guy your fighting is the best wrestler and has you on the ground most of your well rounded skills mean nothing. Not everybody works out the same anyone who knows MMA knows some work harder than others and Brock works harder than almost anyone. Facts are facts Brock has the ability to control anyone in a fight and thats why he’s on top so early most fighters with his experience would not be able to conrol a more experienced fighter but Brock is one of a kind and can step in the ring with anyone.

Yeah, there’s a lot of going down weights I guess. Seems like when you’ve had a fight with one of the top 5 in a division, if you don’t win- you think about moving down a weight.

Obvioulsy, that’s not a sustainable plan! It’s a bit of a shame for guys like Rich Franklin- probably the number 2 185-er out there (I think that he won the fight with DH [also assuming that Lyoto Machida is going to stay at 205]), but has no where to go. He’s doing something unusual in going up a weight, but it demonstrates a point I think- lose a couple of fights, or even just lose the wrong one, and you’re in danger of dropping right out of the UFC. That’s one of the things that boxing has on the UFC at the moment- there are more threads in the plot lines there. Guys can sustain a couple of defeats and still be a big deal.

The whole Pride fiasco has recycled a lot of careers I guess.

Peechida has never seen the combo of speed and power that shad possesses. It will take em a couple rounds to get peechidas head movement down. Once he does I expect rashad to land a few good ones standin up,then go for takedown in round 3(like vs forrest) and pound his head thru the mat. Lyoto is very elusive and one of the best counter strikers in mma, so I don’t expect it to be easy. But rashad is unbeaten and no way his first L comes to peechida.

I think Nover is really being over valued here(-350 ish). We saw how easily Efrain got his takedowns. cant wait to see the odds on Larson v Wilson and Roop v. Kaplan. Kaplan’s got no business as a UFC’s LW. He’s a FW if there ever was one.
I used to think Sherk was a lock on this one cause Frankie is such a lay and pray boring fighter and it’s unlikely he can take Sherk down. Now I’m thinking he has a chance to beat Sherk just with stand up. We’ll see.
