The Incredible bulk: Alistair Overeem putting the heavy in heavyweight
MMA metamorphoses via Free Fight Videos:

It's hard to imagine Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem, who weighed in at 253 pounds at Fields Dynamite!!, ever making the cut to light heavyweight.
Yet that's exactly what he did in 2005 when he took on Vitor Belfort at the 2005 PRIDE Middleweight Grand Prix (under 205 pounds).
What a difference a few years makes.

I did not expect him to even win that fight. Then he goes out there and completely dominates. Wow.

I’d love to see Overeem in the UFC against HWs like Carwin, Kongo, Dos Santos… those would be great stadn up wars. He is a beast, no doubt, but I dont accuse people of steroids until I see a failed drug test, so he is innocent until proven guilty in my book!

Carwin in a stand up war? hehe, Overeem would pick him apart..

STE-ROI-DS!!!!! they had Badr Hari listed at around 203 pounds when he fought in the GP Finals..

F Off! Rob! U may be kind of new to this site, but around here we dont throw around baseless allegations. Wow, he is bigger in one picture then the other…He must be on Roids. GROW UP!!! As if you cant put on 15 pounds of muscle with 3 years of professional athlete training!
I lOVE this sport and I have a crap load of respect for the warriors who train for months for only 15 minutes of action to entertain us fans… I dont like hearing people taint fighter reputations without any type of proof what so ever!
Get your Mind right, and get that Hate out of your blood!

john, maybe you need to get a education about building muscles… whatever if i’m new to this site, i’m not new to life or sports.. I don’t give a damn about how long you’ve been on here or how much you like the sport, cause i do to and i respect every single fighter.. only thing i can’t respect is the fact that they don’t do tests for steroids in Japan..
by RoB on Jan 2, 2009 1:46 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
So everyone who fights in Japan is Dirty? I know all about Muscles Trust me! All I know is I dont throw around roid accusations without having any proof! I have NEVER done this about any mma fighters! I know they dont piss test over there and I wish that they would but, reality is that they dont so we wont know….THerefore I chose not to start rumors like you unless I can actually back it up!
Hey, to each his own….If u r one of the fans that feels the need to bash fighter, enjoy yourself.
by john on Jan 2, 2009 2:57 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t feel a need to bash anyone.. and no everyone who fights in japan is probably not dirty, but take a look at some of the guys and ask yourself if you think they’re clean.. just look at what happened with Chris Leben when he used steroids, his physique totally changed for one fight and i’m pretty sure he was training hard before using roids..

50 lbs. of muscle is a ton to gain in 3 years. That is a lot for a bodybuilder. I just don’t see how it would be possible for someone who trains primarily as a fighter to make gains close to that without the juice. It would be one thing if he was smooth after that kind of a weight gain, but he is still pretty ripped and vascular.

That would be Godzilla[cuz Jesse Holland thinks he looks like a dinosaur] VS. King Kong!

hahahahahahaha King Kong whooped up on the T-Rex. Not so sure that would be the case in this fight…then again.
by RyanHobbs on Jan 2, 2009 1:42 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
King Kong was an early jits student.
He goes for the single leg more than once, gets a takedown, side control and some GNP.
He takes the back and seems to go for the RNC before ripping the jaws apart.
by KS on Jan 2, 2009 5:23 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
KS, that was amazing. Truly, Kong dominated in the stand up which allowed him to take the fight where he wanted it. Godzilla didn’t have an answer for Kong’s striking.

alright, one more. you could say Kong has great “Ape technique”.

I would be shocked if that bulking up is ‘all natural’.. they don’t test for steroids in Japan, do they?
Of course there are always those who find ways of beating tests here too.. ahem cough.. maybe a certain welterweight set to fight GSP next?? ;)
by phatchance on Jan 1, 2009 11:42 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
No they dont test in japan…
But did you just accuse bj of using steriods???
I think your on your own with that thought process!

Thiago Alves has already been caught … I think he has been training with a racehorse :)

thiago alves never got caught for steroids. it was this stuff that made you sweat more
by phil on Jan 2, 2009 12:56 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Thaigo got caught using a dieretic (No clue how to spell it) which is a supplement used to lose weight. Very different from steriods. Dieretics cause you to lose waterweight easier and more frequently.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he was juicing. They do test in Japan, for the record.
BJ juicing? Hah.
by clayton on Jan 1, 2009 11:55 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
maybe “serious” BJ is taking steroids because he actually cares about his conditioning now lol
by brendan on Jan 2, 2009 12:43 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Pretty sure he was talking about Thiago not BJ douche. No one would accuse BJ of juicing.

They don’t test in Japan. Just ask Bob Sapp
by Bluepit360 on Jan 2, 2009 12:16 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
The buliking up is definately not natural but being that he was no older than about 24 in 2003 and the height he is, part of the size he has could have been natural, but not all of it.
by Ade on Jan 2, 2009 10:21 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
BJ isn’t a true welterweight. Alves guys.. geez :)

No idea. It had better be some top competition though. This guy is pretty huge. I’d like to see him throw down with Tim Sylvia.
by RyanHobbs on Jan 1, 2009 11:57 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I think he would handle big tim pretty easy! saying that i still wouldn’t mind watching that fight.
Overeem is pretty damn good but no matter what he does in the ring or cage i can never like the guy, he personifies douchbaggery!
by mike22 on Jan 2, 2009 12:03 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
He is certainly a douche but I still like to see a good fighter compete.

Oh yea i like watching the guy fight. he’s definitley a top heavyweight.. His personality just bugs me.
by mike22 on Jan 2, 2009 12:32 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
hes improved so much the last few years skill wise also, i could see him making a run at the heavyweight title considering how weak that division is right now
by brendan on Jan 2, 2009 12:38 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Absolutely. He obviously has heavy hands and has good striking. He dominated Cro Cop on the ground and in the clinch. Could do big things if the UFC signed him. I wonder if they are even trying to make it happen. I hope they do. I’m tired of seeing fighters do big things in Japan then getting signed into the UFC after they peak in their potential.

He knocked Badr retarded too. I was shocked by that fight.

no way he’s gonna be cleared to fight in the ufc.. though i think he’d do pretty damn well against the ufc’s heavyweights

If light heavyweights walk around at 230 than why is it so hard to believe that a former lhw who is also I believe around 6 ft 6 to weigh in at 250???

I just watched both fights back to back. After seeing the K-1 match I had to dig out his PRIDE fight with Chuck to see if it was the same guy.
Overeem is HUGE. Wonder if he had any help that comes in a vile.

What a difference a few years makes, coupled with a few roids. They don’t test in Japan. Thats why everyone uses them. They have to keep up with the curve.

It’s amazing how often I have to babysit posts because guys like you are so wrapped up in semantics. It’s a simple post about how much Overeem has bulked up since his early days in PRIDE and your only contribution is that five is more than a couple. I’ll change it so that you and jj aren’t so distracted.
by Jesse Holland on Jan 2, 2009 1:49 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
i hate how everyone makes it seem like chuck owned overeem, overeem was handling chuck easily until he gassed. this guys always been an amazing fighter he just had one of the worse gas tanks ever. WHY? because he cut way too much weight. simple as that no need to question mr. overeem
by Jared on Jan 2, 2009 12:54 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Overeem wasn’t handling Chuck. As I recall, it was pretty close up until Chuck knocked Overeem out.
by RyanHobbs on Jan 2, 2009 4:58 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Nah I just watched that fight last night, chuck was getting handled till he landed a nice uppercut in the clinch, seemed to daze overeem a little bit and then he caught him with another good right hand; and of course then the big overhand right.
by O Damn he got caught on Jan 2, 2009 9:26 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
yea you forgot about when Chuck had Overeem on the ground and was landing knees also….dont act like Chuck was losing and then got a KO. It was a good fight with Overeem winning in the first couple minutes, then Chuck came back and finished him.
by Chadx23 on Jan 2, 2009 11:00 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Which knee’s actually landed? Cause they were all blocked by the forearm of Overeem, he didn’t catch him clean with one knee. Matter of fact, Chuck was the one that initiated the clinch and went for the takedown, must have felt he was losing the stand up.
by O Damn he got caught on Jan 2, 2009 12:17 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I highly doubt that they test for roids in Japan. Look at WS when he fought Crocop. He ballooned to 225lbs and it was not from protein shakes & creatine.

i don’t take any juice but i physically stronger than overeem i think for black people or mix race or Latin the darkest is your skin the physical stronger you look and if you training hard like in my case and also alistair plus around 30 the age help a lot as well
by HALEXTITO on Jan 2, 2009 2:33 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Now thats a juicy look – but tbh I am suprised that people just now noticed that? When he fought CroCop and laid on him it looked like child molestation to me.
He has been calling out everyone, including Fedor. I say if he gets a shot, then under Afflication and in the US, preferably in Nevada where the Commission kinda has a clue by now about testing MMA fighters.

LOL … Im amazed at the vast “fighter” knowledge in here thanx for bringin back a childhood memmory I remember I loved Superfly Snuka i remeber he used to finish opponents off by jumping from the top rope. Why doesnt that happen in the UFC .. Its a wellproven way to knockout your opponent.

Most obvious case of steroids i have EVER seen, anyone who disagrees is an idiot or a braindead fan of his who don’t want to know the truth.
by Lester the Pimp on Jan 2, 2009 7:48 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Why does everyone automatically assume just because someone has gone considerably more muscular that he MUST be on steroids. Just because he is in Japan, doesn’t mean he’s on AAS. And considering theres 5 years between them pictures, I belive he could of easily made that transition naturally. And to the comment about the bloated face….yes that is a side effect of certain steroids but you can get that by being natural too. To get that big he must of been eating like a demon, he’s obviously not as lean as he was in the 2003 photo so like everywhere else, he’ll put fat on round his face and neck.
At the end of the day he may well be on steroids, but i feel unless proved, it shouldn’t be automatically assumed. I know how i’d feel if i’d worked 5 years to put on that much muscle just for everyone to be like “oh, he’s juicing”
by danny on Jan 2, 2009 8:20 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Like I said earlier why is it so hard to believe that a former lhw who is 6 ft 6 weighs 250 when most lhws that are shorter walk around at 230 he was also pretty damn big muscle wise to begin with. He might have great genetics I am half samoan half irish and pretty much gain muscle doing everyday things if I worked out as hard as him I bet I would be bigger and its all thanks to mommy and daddy :)
by haze on Jan 2, 2009 9:47 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
It looks like Overeem’s using some performance enhancing drugs. He is HUGE compared to win he fought Liddell. They don’t test in Japan though from what i’ve heard.
by Chris on Jan 2, 2009 2:54 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Yeah he really looks roided , but come on most of you are Americans so why are you shocked US sports and performance enhancers go hand in hand Im sorry to say. Off course there are people juicing in the UFC .. A certain Sean Serk comes to mind. I mean come on the guy trains 2hour sets .. 12 times a day!! :)
by Bl@DE on Jan 2, 2009 8:38 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Anyone who says that Overeem is not on something is naive and border line brain dead. If you knew anything about steroids you would know how easy it is to pass a drug test. The idiots who know nothing about steroids and use them are the ones who get caught.
Great genetics, does anybody even know what that means. Stop throwing great genetics around as if it means something substantive or serves as a legitimate excuse.
I don’t know what his height has to do with anything. Height has nothing to do with putting on muscle, as a matter of fact it is more difficult to fill out a larger frame than a smaller frame. Ten pounds of muscle growth on a man under six feet will appear as a drastic change in comparison to someone of Overeem’s size.
Quite honestly I don’t care if he uses or not but lets not kid ourselves.
by Mack on Jan 5, 2009 10:09 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
If you dont think he is roiding you’re lying to yourself the man gained at least 30 pounds of pure muscle, he went from a undersized heavyweight to one of the biggest in 2 or 3 years. COME ON NOW! I’m not hatin on him, but the man juiced.
