Shinya Aoki submits Eddie Alvarez at Fields Dynamite!!; earns WAMMA title of worlds best lightweight

While the New Year has yet to arrive in North America, New Year's celebrations have already begun in other regions of the world. In Japan, the New Year has already been ushered in with its annual tradition of promoting major combat sporting events.

With FEG holding a massive 17-bout show combining fighters from its K-1 kickboxing and DREAM mixed martial arts rosters, the promotion held one of the biggest shows ever with their presentation of "Dynamite!!" at the Saitama Super Arena.

"Dynamite!!" featured the crowning of the second-ever undisputed champion in World Alliance Mixed Martial Arts (WAMMA) history with Shinya Aoki defeating Eddie Alvarez via heel hook submission at 1:32 of round 1. In the process, Aoki became the first-ever WAMMA lightweight champion.

WAMMA would like to publicly congratulate Shinya Aoki on his historic victory and looks forward to presenting him with his championship belt at a ceremony to be scheduled at a later date.

"Dynamite!! was phenomenal event and quite possibly one of the best New Year's Eve shows in Japan's history," said WAMMA Chief Operating Officer Michael Lynch. "We're also delighted to have a fighter the caliber of Shinya Aoki representing WAMMA as its lightweight champion. On behalf of WAMMA, we'd like to congratulate Mr. Aoki on his sensational victory."

WAMMA would also like to wish everyone a Happy New Year. The organization is already looking forward to a big 2009 with its recognized undisputed heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko scheduled to defend his WAMMA belt against Andrei Arlovski on January 24 in Anaheim, California during Affliction's "Day of Reckoning."

FUCK WAMMA! How can he be the "worlds best lightweight?
come fight sherk, get through the gate keeper Huerta, try and beat kenny Florian, then you’ll be the #1 contender…which is first in line to get your ass kicked by BJ Penn. Wamma is like the step brother who thinks he’ll get the same inheritance even though it’s not his real dad…in a dream land!

weren’t “The Law” & Belfort going to fight for the MW WAMMA belt. That just shows it for what its is. Worthless.

Fedor is the best Heavyweight without doubt (and we don’t need WAMMA to tell us that), but the rest is rubbish.

IF Lindland and Belfot fight for the WAMMA MW tite, that would be the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard!!!!!

I think that was just speculation and never actually finalized as a deal.

The original fight in October was going to be for the Wamma, but Victor broke his hand. The rearranged fight 24th Jan will not be for the Wamma, for some stange reason. However the fact they were even mentioned is a complete joke.

True that

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Dec 31, 2008 12:32 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

They’re tryin to be slick and claim that BJ is a WW so it makes sense that #2 and #3 fight for the belt regardless of its meaninglessness or stupidity. BTW, i called this fight even though Shinya failed at his jumping/flying guard. Alvarez thought he was fighting a Hellboy with no standup but similar ground.

There are serious doubts about Fedor.
He’s never fought in a cage, hasn’t fought half of the current top ten heavyweights and apart from Sylvia and Nog his record over the past 6 years has seen him face only average MMA fighters, kick boxers, freak shows, cans and 185/205 pound guys.
On top of that the majority of his success was in Pride, an entertainment organisation known to have been loosely regulated and use biased officials.
Fedor is truly a paper champion and WAMMA titles are meaningless.
Of course I could be wrong about Fedor and would love to find out for sure. If Affliction would just go away and Fedor, Arlovski, Barnett and Sylvia join the UFC ranks we could find out. And have some amazing heavyweight matches over the next few years.

just watched the fight….SOMEONE PLEASE TELL BJJ guys that they shouldn’t act HARD! I was really disappointed by this fight. Aoki is a PHENOMENAL JJ guy, but he has ZERO standup. He caught a kick, got Eddie down, Eddie mounted him and Aoki was able to transition and pull off a lame(yes, any ankle locks, toe holds, heel hooks are a little anti climactic and thus bogus in my eyes in an MMA fight…legit wins but bogus)submission. I hope Eddie’s knee is ok, but that’s a separate issue. Iposted this here cuz i know U are a jitz guy Phil. No offense, but i just don’t get when a guy like Aoki comes out to the ring acting like a tough guy, wins with an ankle lock and then struts around the ring and talks to the crowd like he just smashed somebody’s face in. It’s impressive yes and he is incredibly talented(i’m not a guy who doesn’t appreciate the ground game so don’t go there ppl) but just carry yourself like you are the better/more talented guy, not a tough guy/badass. comes off a little disingeniuous.

by DDT on Dec 31, 2008 1:57 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That was the 2nd time they fought. Aoki beat him just as convincingly the 1st time. That makes them 1-1 so I imagine that had some influence in the decision making.

If your gonna call brock the heavyweight champion after 3 fights just because he caught couture, and because he can sell PPV’S, then naming FEDOR and now a very deserving aoki wamma champ just doesnt seem so bad…im sorry but it doesnt! sure, BJ should hold that lightweight distinction since we all know he may very well be the 2nd best guy in MMA behind fedor of course, especially if he beats GSP. But until then, aoki is not half bad to the ones that actually know his fights.

They called Brock the champ because he BEAT the champion.

They just handed Aoki the belt because they needed someone to give it to (and decided to give it to the winner of a #2 and #3 contender match)

Aoki would submit every lightweight in the UFC penn included. Take that to the bank. Penn and UFC nuthuggers. Stop and be objective Aoki’s the best lightweight in the world his submission game is sick! Admit it and be honest! Aoki is the best!

In an MMA fight, he would lose to (I believe the majority of times)

I’m not even looking after this first comment before replying and just agreeing sayin WAMMA is a bag of shite. Also saying Sherdogs rankings of K flo as no. 7 are too. I do look out for lightweights outside of UFCs stacked division but really do think that between BJ, K Flo and possibly Sherk that Aoki is not there.
OK he did good but he lost his last fight and then got a submission which he wouldn’t have got against K Flo sho in my opinion could avoid his subissions and is a WAY better striker! Really want to see a K-Flo rematch. Don’t want to call it but think it would be more competitive. Diego at LW now too. I dunno………

kev, couldn’t have put it better myself. especially your passion. reading that i could hear the tone of your voice and i feel the same way. Wamma is a joke. They must feel like they can make a buck if they claim to be like a non denominational championship org especially if they tie themselves to the only legit non ufc best fighter in any weight class(Fedor). It’s a shame cuz WAMMA starts it and others will follow and we will inevitably run into the same problems boxing has with the devaluation of the titles. That’s why i disagree with ppl like Tyler who are so anti-UFC. yea typically in business competition brings out the best and improves the product for consumers, but not all businesses are the same. There’s a reason that there are government supported monopolies for such things as electricity, cable, telephone….etc. certain businesses call for 1 true leader. the success of other organizations may get us a few more free cards, but if they are trying to have top level talent and pay for such…that will dilute the talent pool, rob us of seeing fights we want to see and prevent a true champion. WAMMA is straight up hurting the sport we love

Aoki is a freak, I would love to see him turn Sherk inside out. Im not sure who watches what but Alverez and Aoki are 2 of the best lightweights on the planet. Sherk is a steroid junky thats what makes him tough, you saw what he was like when he came back clean and fought BJ, BJ beat him into a bloody pulp. I dislike Sean Sherk very much and am sure that both of these guys would take him out.

by the spyder on Dec 31, 2008 12:02 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I actually think Aoki wouls submit Sherk. But it would be a good fight. I wish the UFC could import some of these top contenders. There’s a pretty good crop of Lightweights in Japan.

by DB on Dec 31, 2008 12:21 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Sherk is too much of a muscle freak to be submitted by Aoki. I believe that even BJ respects Sherks ground game.

“Ceritus Paribus” I agree

by I Fart Therfore I Smell on Dec 31, 2008 3:04 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

BJ beats almost everyone to a bloody pulp, so Sherk gets a pass there. Sherk would beat Aoki because he can take him down and pound him out. Sherk has only ever lost at LW and WW when he faced someone he couldn’t out-wrestle (BJ, GSP, Hughes). Sherk has great top control and is very hard to submit. And Aoki also doesn’t have the stand-up to hurt Sherk like BJ and GSP did.

by Pat on Dec 31, 2008 12:12 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Aoki and his butt scoot would get ground and pounded to death by Sherk. Alvarez is a solid fighter but he doesn’t that great of a ground game. I think Aoki would be the #4 lightwieght in the UFC behind BJ, Sherk and Kenflo.

by DDT on Dec 31, 2008 2:08 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

No right to call him a steroid junkie. Don’t like sherk at all but still hate all that shite. Aoki just got 1 good win there. Ha just thinking Chonan got a great (freak) win once!!!! and lost to Brad Blackburn or whatever last weekend

by MMAGreen on Dec 31, 2008 11:17 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

No right to call him a steroid junkie are you kidding, he has been busted twice in the UFC for steroids and personally I think once is enough. Steroids are the reason he is considered one of the top guys in his division, without them he is nothing. Sorry dude but once you are tested positive then you should be labeled a cheater. Alverez, Aoki, Penn, Kenflo are all guys that deserve to be at the top. Pure skill is why they are there and I would hate to see any of them lose to a 2 time cheat like Sherk. He is not marketable, he does not talk well to the media, he has no respect and is a cheat. I just cringe at the thought of a legititmate clean fighter losing to him. Im not ignorant either I dont believe he is the only guy out there doing the shit but he always seems to be in the mix when it gets brought up. Then he fights it in court like it wasnt his piss that got tested. People that get tested and busted then come out and say they got shafted are the dumbest people on the planet, you cant fake that shit and you cannot lie your way out of it. Didnt anyone watch or listen to all the Baseball shit, everyone that said they didnt do it eventually came out and said they did except for the Rocket, he is an idiot.

How the hell does this organization have any money to continue this shit? Are there actually companies out there that sponsor these douche-bags or are they privately funded?

I completely agree with Kevin on this one. There are so many tough guys in the UFC’s LW division that would tool Aoki. The myth that the fighters in Japan are superior to the ones here at home has been vanquished time and time again.

Sherk, Florian, Penn, Stevenson, and even Gray Maynard would beat Aoki. Yes, Gray Maynard.

Here we go again. Post after post about how UFC fighters are the only top fighters to consider. Take your blinders off people. Open your minds up just a little. Do you realize that many of your favorites started their careers in other organizations? Sherk, GSP, Rampage, Anderson Silva, Forrest (pre-TUF) and the list goes on and on. How many of you who posted negatively about Aoki have actually watched more than one of his fights? IF so, how much did you really know about his opponent at the time? Eddie Alvarez is nasty and a victory over him deserves just as much praise as someone beating a top 3 UFC LW.

Yamamoto is outstanding and I’d love to see him and many others fight in the states. You gotta remember that these guys aren’t Americans and they’re fiercely loyal to their country just as we are to ours. The money and fame isn’t any greater here than what they’re already getting in their homeland. None of them are going to jump ship and immigrate to America just to get locked into an exclusive UFC contract. Trust me, if the UFC ever decides to co-promote we’ll get to see how these guys stack up for real. Like MikeD said in his post below, the UFC does have MOST but not ALL of the best fighters. THat means there are still others out there who are just as good or better.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the UFC, but some of you people who think that is all MMA is really need to open your eyes. I’m not saying that most of the best fighters in the world are not in the UFC, but that is only because UFC fighters get PAID. WAMMA is a terrific idea in the world of MMA. It allows fighters in all parts of the world to fight “the best”. As it stands I believe the UFC is the only organization that doesn’t allow it’s fighters to fight elsewhere, simply because THEY (Zuffa) want to make money. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying there is anything wrong with this. It is a business, and a damn good one. Good enough to bring MOST of the best fighters in the world to. After all, you can’t let your fighters go elsewhere, make money for someone else, or possibly get hurt and not make any money for you …

It would be a great Idea, and is a great concept, except for a few crazy things:
bj=#1 LW
GSP=#1 ww
anderson silva=#1 MW
who knows who the best LHW is, but he’s not outside the UFC!
so unless the UFC recognizes wamma or cross promotes, Fedor is the only true champion they can have…until AA beats him or he fights 3 times a year!

What has WAMMA done for MMA so far? Aside from introduce two goofy belts, can anyone name one good thing WAMMA has done for any fighter? Probably not. All WAMMA consists of is a couple of outsiders (aside from Militech) trying to get a piece of the pie- trying to get money from promotions for doing nothing. All their officers, aside from Militech, have no qualifications to be authorities in MMA. They are all a bunch of lawyer, accountants, and a guy that used to be an assistant director of the FBI. Oh yeah, I almost forgot about that moron Goldberg-great MMA authority there. You can read their bio’s here:
http://www.gowamma.com/officers.asp
Read these bio’s and tell me how many of these “officers” are true MMA fans and actually care about the fighters. One, maybe two? All WAMMA seems to be is a big hedge fund looking to profit from the hard work of the fighters and different promotions.
The idea that the fighters should have an organization to look after them is a great idea, but WAMMA is definitely not have the make-up to ensure fighters’ best interest.

by the_mexicutioner on Dec 31, 2008 1:32 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe the UFC should let their fighters fight for the Wamma belt then. If all of there title holders are always the best in the world and everyone else couldn’t touch them in a fight, then there is no risk right?…..wrong!!!! I say that (if) the best guys outside the UFC could fight the title holders in the UFC…the UFC only wins 50% of the fights.

I’ll give you Babalu but Soko’s a one-round wonder. Rashad & his camp are too smart to play stand in the the pocket with him. They’ll just let Soko burn himself out in the 1st and have Sugar pick him apart come the 2nd.

Introvert-

I stand by your 1st post, not really sure about who’s in your wammma vs ufc tournament and agree with the BJ assessment. You’re totally right. Hansen is the real deal now, Aoki is a submission robot and Alvarez has very crisp stand-up. I’d pick all 3 of those guys over Joe Stevenson and at least 2 of em over Sherk.

by brendan on Dec 31, 2008 6:49 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Hold on now, CHuck landed a solid shot and he bounced back. Shad’s been cracked a few times in his career. I know Brad Imes was green at the time but he was like 70 pounds heavier and several inches taller and Rashad ate plenty of his punches and managed to recover. The chin is definitely there.

I can think of 5 UFC LHWs that would beat little Nog in decisive fashion. Greg Jackson would put together a killer gameplan for Rashad. Rampage would knock him out. Machida would beat him by decision, Shogun would beat him again, Thiago would probably beat him too. He got knocked out by Sokoudjou. You must be impressed by his 3 fight winning streak to people not even ranked in the top 20. UFC has has the best LHW division in the world period. Hed be a perect WAMMA champ though. lol

Woot Aoki is #1 LW in the world!!!!Thought Eddie was gonna take him after that loss to Hansen but i guess Aoki is stronger mentally then i thought came back wit it baby!!!!!

Wish BJ would stop fighting cans and leave the UFC would be great to see him fighting the best.

He almost got mounted. Eddie made a very good attempt to mount him and almost did but Aoki is badass.
