Georges St. Pierre wants to finish BJ Penn; is a better fighter than Thiago Alves

Props: Sherdog.com
Quoteworthy:
"This time, I want to go for the finish [against BJ Penn]. I don’t want to go to a decision. I want to take him out.... The way [Thiago Alves] beat Josh Koscheck was very impressive, and it proved he’s a very serious contender for the title. Right now, I’m focusing on B.J. Penn. When the time [comes to face Alves], I truly believe that I’m a better fighter than he is, but there’s only one way to find out."
UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre talks about wanting to erase any doubt that he is superior than BJ Penn (there is some doubt after their first encounter) at UFC 94 on January 31 and how he stacks up against the number one contender behind Penn, Thiago Alves. Whatever happens, there are several great welterweight fights in store for mixed martial arts fans in 2009.

BJ could go toe-to-toe with everythin’ GSP’s got. Just my “biased”[based on the 1st fight]opinion, hehe!

Gsp will win bj
he’ll only win bj if he keeps it on his feet
and then he’ll fight alves
he’ll only win against alves if he takes him down and alves’ takedown defence is alot better than it was
i think the next 2 fights gsp has are gunna be W/L

Why is it that BJ fans think we are calling him a can when we claim he’s overrated. I say he’s overrated because you fanboys have elevated him to a godly status. Am the first person to admit that he’s a great fighter but not as great as you guys make him out to be. Anyways, GSP GSP GSP!!!

& lets not forget his “DOMINATION” of St. Rush.
You only need look at a pic of a dejected BJ in his locker room after the fight, covered in Rush’s blood…not a mark on him…to know he got ripped off.
His cardio was his nemisis in that fight…it’s no longer an issue.
BJ by total domination!

I’ll be highly impressed if either one of these guys finishes the fight. Outside of an illness or injury, these two are too good and too evenly matched for one to completely dominate the other. I see a split-decision in their future but a KO or Sub would be a nice treat.

Unbiased opinion…BJ wins by KO or submission
GSP takes a decision!

Is your statement a testament to BJ’s chin or are you saying GSP doesn’t have the tools to finish Penn?
by Machine on Dec 31, 2008 12:49 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
BJ WON’T be KO’d or submitted. unless the referee stops it (which would take a dislocated rib), I don’t see GSP finishing BJ. If you can give an example of how you think he can, I’d love to hear it!
BJ=better stand up
bj= better BJJ
GSP=better cardio which only assists in him getting a decision!

LOL Gord
Kevin: You’ve gotta understand I’m a Penn fan too bro but I’m also a GSP fan. I lose no matter who wins here but I’ve gotta stay objective.
Stand-Up: BJ had, I repeat, had better stand-up in the 1st fight. He may still have the edge but realize that even though GSP’s style of striking hasn’t changed since then, his power and hand-speed have. They’re much more even than you think.
BJJ: no doubt Penn is a wunderkind in terms of how fast he developed his BJJ but outside of RNC’s what has he really accomplished with his Jits? GSP will put him on his back and Penn hasnt submitted anyone from there.
I can see GSP winning by GnP TKO just as easily as I can see Penn doing the same.

“but outside of RNC’s what has he really accomplished with his Jits?”
LOL BJ has only really needed to use the RNC b/c that’s all he usually needs! Who cares if he doesn’t do mounted gogoplatas or flying heel hooks. And the subs is only half of BJJ, the other half is positioning, and that’s where BJ excels at. He’s very good at advancing position, and rarely loses it.

Pat and Machine, great posts…I love this site!
Pat – Great Analysis of BJ’s ummm…BJJ :)
“Position before submission” is the second thing a good BJJ coach will teach you. Right after RELAX! Penn’s flexibility makes him Dangerous off his back.
Machine – I agree. Test of mental toughness. Either could take it…In ANY fashion. This will be a classic.
My 2 cents: Is GSP looking past Penn at Alves???? and if so, will that be his fatal mistake?
by Ground-Game on Dec 31, 2008 4:20 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
MM_Eh: Just because Nog was groggy when bein’ stood up, doesn’t necessarily mean he got KTFO. It’s still TKO…And oh, Happy new year to you maniacs and junkies!![not necessarily from dat other website].

Pat-
You bring up a good point but what I’m trying to get at is BJ is not as aggressive with his Jits as he could be. Sure he can still win but his track record of submissions shows a pattern which slightly limits his chances of submitting GSP. Taking your opponents back is a trump card as far as positioning goes but a RNC will not be Pierre’s undoing.
by Machine on Dec 31, 2008 6:15 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
After all of my wrong calls on this past weekends fights, I can’t even hazard a guess as to who will take this one. I want to say BJ, but if I do, bet the house on GSP.

GSP by ref stoppage in the later rounds. He is too strong for BJ to control him. I love BJ, but he’s going to get sent back to the LW division. He’ll dominate there for a long time.

Reading comprehension. GSP is totally focused on Penn. He’s addressing Alves when asked about Alves. GSP knows Penn is the only guy to worry about now, and is likely the more dangerous opponent anyway.

There was a split decision last time they fought. I agree with you that they are two great fighters, but I don’t see this one going all five rounds again. They both seem very determined to get this finished. As who is going to win…I have no idea.

there is no way bj will be able to keep up with gsp. Bj will be completly gassed out by the 3rd round. Only hope for Bj is that him and chris leban have been doing lots of roids before this fight!

I’ll be totally suprised if GSP doesn’t finish Penn. They aren’t even close to evenly matched in cardio. A tired BJ vs a fresh GSP = BJ getting finished. Just because BJ went from shitty cardio to good cardio, doesn’t mean he won’t gas when up against GSP’s insain cardio.
by Gord on Dec 31, 2008 12:40 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
just because GSP’s stamina is great when doing cote from behind, doesn’t mean it will be enough to get him out of the 2nd with BJ!

A tired Penn vs a fresh GSP = Penn finished? Who says BJ is hella gassed and GSP is fresh?? More like a tired BJ vs a broken nose having and busted up GSP = BJ Wins via Sub. Whatever, no reasoning with Gord BJ BJ BJ!!!
by ( (AdamG ) ) on Dec 31, 2008 1:11 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
AdamG, we still havent seen evidence that BJ’s cardio is improved! BJ was dead on his feet after the Stevenson fight! And Sherk didnt go for a single takedown, which would have caused BJ to expend energy to stop! So to say BJ “fixed” his cardio problem remains to be seen!
Striking: goes to GSP cause all BJ has is good “boxing” theres no kicks in BJ’s game!
BJJ: SLIGHT edge to BJ, but dont forget GSP is a black belt. Look at how GSP transitioned from a kimura to an armbar in the Hughes fight, that dam good JJ!!!
Wrestling: Is that even in question? GSP!
Cardio: That is not even a worthy question either! GSP!
So where does BJ win this fight????

Why does everyone think BJ has improved cardio? He hasn’t gone 5 rounds yet, after stating he has improved cardio. I thought his rib injury was the reason why he lost to hughes not cardio right. If it was the rib then why say I need to improve cardio? That’s like a fighter breaking his hand and saying man I need more cardio!!!!
This is coming from a big Penn fan that knows BJ has no cardio past the 3rd, nothing has really changed, I think Penn doesn’t get to GSP in 2 rounds the fights over. Which is why GSP will not engage standing for 2 rounds and then pounce.

Kevin, you sure talk a lot about cock. I hope this is not the real reason you watch MMA.
I like to watch these two guys fight about as well as anybody in MMA, but IMO GSP will drag Penn into the later rounds and then GSP will start to really gas and then GSP will GNP him into a tko stoppage. The only real advantage Penn has is his bjj and GSP will nulify that with his superior wrestling. I believe cardio will be a huge factor in this fight if it goes past the third round and again GSP will have a huge advantage there as well.

I’ll give a slight edge to Penn in BJJ but definitely not in the stand up. How many times has GSP really done a GNP stoppage? Sherk, and Serra… against Hughes, the ground came after the head kick, not what I’d call GNP. In the 3rd fight, Matt did very well avoiding damage, more like LNP there, and he was looking for subs more than a stoppage. Point being, real ground and pound is Kos/lytle, hughes/penn 2, thiago silva/mendes, things like that. GSP HAS NEVER GNP’ED ANYONE! Penn by sub.

Both are great fighters. I do think GSP will have the advantage as he is a much stronger and a better conditioned athlete than BJ.
I think GSP should be concerned about BJ’s great striking abilities.
I think BJ should be concerned about GSP’s strengths & conditioning + all his strengths in all disciplines.

Mad A, I never wanted to root for a French Canadian. I am very pro-America and thus I think French people are gay althought the girls rock b/c they’re super easy (by good friend in college sponsored our France/America exchange program) Although you have to watch out for garden maintenance if your not into that. Anyway, I degress. I also don’t usually root for Canadians since South Park draws you all differently. But Georges won me over here in Albuquerque by being one of the nicest guys you could ever meet and exhibiting some of the craziest athletic ability I’ve ever seen. If you would have told me a few years ago I would have been pulling for him over salt-of-the-earth American Matt Hughes, I wouldn’t have believed it. GSP rocks and it’s nice to have the most talented fighter and the most honorable fighter be the same person. Good on you Canada! Produce more people like this.

BJ will be held down and pounded until the ref stops it. BJ is going to feel soft and weak underneath him compared to GSP’s training partners. No amount of limberness will compensate against this level of tight GnP. Oh, and there is no takedown defense on this planet that can stop GSP from getting it to the the ground if he wants it there. I’m so certain that it’s starting to feel painful to me. I wish we all hung out because I would love to place some wagers like loser takes a dart to the ass. One of my alltime favorites even though a chick in college missed and planted one in my hamstring which hurt even after several shots of Crown.

Last fight card was full of surprises and even though they talk about this fight ad nauseum I still enjoy reading the post’s which are very predictable. They kept on going on how nog is unfinishable, is like frankenstein coming back from the dead, went to two decisions with fedor and then gets finished by a guy like mir, and fights like shit, LOL. Guys MMA is so freaking unpredictable its not funny, if gsp subbed a dazed penn I wouldn’t be overly surprised, like some on this page think is impossible or if penn ko’ed gsp I wouldn’t be too surprised either or vise versa, anything could happen in this fight. Both these guys are very talented, top fighters, it could be over in the first round or go to the 5th for a decision. I have no freaking idea how this fight will go or who will win and to guarantee one or the other is just shows MMA ignorance, I hope gsp wins thats as far as I’m willing to go, as I like him more. How many of us would have thought rampage would ko silva in the first or mir finish nog in the second? Gsp seems to be very confident in himself these days and he was confident before his first fight with penn and after the fight I’m pretty sure he felt he underestimated him. Another thing I notice is how people here seem to judge a fighter based on so little information, forget how penn out boxed gsp for a couple of minutes 2 and a half years ago who says he could do the same today? Look at anderson silva’s resume, not one tko loss and his tko wins, it means something, he’s freaking good, but by the same token doesn’t mean it can’t happen. Serra tko’s gsp his only in his career and suddenly gsp has mediocre stand up and serra has heavy hands. Its like feeling an elephants tail and knowing all about the elephant, very naive. Serra, koscheck and fitch have much more credentials than gsp at grappling but look at what happened gsp out grappled them. To say gsp has no chance on the ground with penn is premature, like I said not much would surprise me in this fight, about the only thing that would really surprise me is if gsp gassed before penn or penn man handles gsp and over powers him. One thing I feel pretty certain on is both these guys(if there’s no injuries) will bring there A games and fight like there lives depend on it.

Great post Nathan! It’s the emotional aspect of being a sports fan that clouds most peoples vision. But it makes for some entertaining posts and some funny wars of words. MMA has definitely taught those who are paying attention that it’s very unpredictable. In my opinion, the main reason why is the intangibles. Things beyond physical ability (illness, mentality, lack of proper training in any aspect, bad ref) that a fan simply cannot know in advance and account for. Take away the intangibles and I do believe an educated student of the game can consistently pick a winner while maintaining a winning average. Maybe not 100% of the time but 60% or better.

I called it for Mir, Rampage, but not Rashad. Not too predictable when we arent talking Penn huh = ) And i posted those predictions on here so you may check to check = ) I think the only fight i missed was the Rashad fight including how they would in, came pretty close with all of those also.

Apparently scott you haven’t watched a lot of MMA and are wrong a hell of a lot. Gsp CAN ko penn(he’s human right?) and CAN submit him(can he get hurt, exhausted or rocked badly)……(hughes almost subbed royce gracie but didn’t want to break his arm) ,he CAN posture up for ground and pound without getting caught. I’m tired of everyone getting off on Bj “skills” vs Gsp’s cardio and athleticism, gsp is very technical and other then bjj IMO is more well rounded technically than penn. Forget the fight back in march 2006 this will be jan 2009 and most likely will be a very different fight. Look at gsp’s two loses, he completely outclassed serra than hughes after he lost to them, just goes to show you guys past fights aren’t good predictors of future fights. Not saying gsp will win just that one performance in one fight doesn’t mean a whole lot.

I could not agree more. Your post hits the mark.
Facts since last fight:
GSP is now a Black Belt in JJ.
GSP has trained with olympic wrestling team
GSP has trained some MT in Thailand
BJ has been sleeping in his plastic tent.

To compare GSP’s bjj to BJ’s, is like comparing his striking to Anderson Silva’s
by Parks1 on Dec 31, 2008 7:30 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
you are right ,but not the way you are trying to make it out to be,I also think that GSP has the best striking next to Anderson Silva ,that is why I also believe that after GSP beats BJ and Alves.I believe you will get to see Anderson Silva vs GSP at Ultimate 09

To be honest BJ impresses me with his ability to take a punch, his ability to land a punch and ability to keep his balance with his enormous flexibility. I am sure in a pure BJJ competition he would dominate. However, in MMA I would rather place my money on GSP’s ability to dominate on the ground. I hear what Rogan and Goldy say but most of it is geared towards marketing and I choose to think for myself and have the ability to slow down fights to see what actually is happening. For example, I know BJ landed some punches and drew some blood in the first fight but slow it down and count how many kicks GSP landed and see who had control of the ring. It is amazing how biased we can become by listening to Rogan and Goldy. Dont get me wrong they both make good points but they need to be considered in the context of marketing. BJ is awesome, but my point of the initial post was that George appears to be doing more to improve in different areas than BJ. It will be a great fight but I am thinking George has a foot or knee followed by some sort of choke out. We will see and hopefully Kevin wont asphyxiate with all his laughter.

Lemme add a different spin on things… IF BJ wins, he’d never get past Alves…
but it doesn’t matter, GSP is going to win.

gsp more fast ! more athetic ! more powerful ! so with teamjackson in is corner and his train (big) partner (evans, jardin, marquard) you have better chance to win…like bj penn who beat the little lightweight (stevenson, sherk, pulver(haha)

It’s kind of absurd to say “what has BJ accomplished with his jits besides a RNC”. Firstly a finishing move is not the only aspect of bjj—controlling, manuevering and downright dominating the ground is just as big a role. Secondly, if the choke is there—if someone gives up there back—should he ignore the opportunity at the RNC and wait for something else.

I am more pumped for thiago and GSP fight I think GSP walks through BJ and will have harder time with thiago but I think he will eventually get the win.
by TKO on Dec 31, 2008 7:10 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
GSP he’s just the better fighter only chance bj has is to land a lucky punch, hes not going to submit gsp be realistic and hes not going to win a decision so gsp wins

I agree I think thiago is a much more dangerous opponent for gsp than bj
by FJM on Dec 31, 2008 7:32 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I agree TKO for some reason I think alves will be a tougher fight than penn, but I’m biased because of his fight with koscheck, but only time will tell we can only speculate right now. As far as gsp walking threw penn that would surprise me but gsp has been on a tear lately, penn walking threw gsp would surprise me a lot more. People seem to forget that slow matt hughes got thiago down in the first round while koscheck didn’t in his fight. I think koscheck had a bad game plan and hughes was only thinking of take downs and koscheck badly wanted the ko forgetting his strengths and only resorting to them in desperation. I still think with an intelligent game plan both koscheck and fitch have a great chance at beating thiago. Just look at serra/lytle and there pathetic controversial fight, and then hughes/gsp’s fight where gsp destroyed hughes the greatest welter weight of all time. People place a lot of emphasis on the last fight, for all we know if alves fought koscheck again he might get ko’ed in the first round or get dominated badly by take downs. My point is serra had a bad night with lytle and had the best night of his life with gsp, gsp had the worst fight ever with serra and had his best performance with hughes in both of his last fights with him. I have a good memory with MMA fights and know how inconsistence fighters can be. I remember when diego sanchez had a spectacular ko of riggs and thought he was the next chuck liddel, LOL and then he fights koscheck …he looked horrible. The most consistent fighters I know of are fedor and anderson silva. Anderson silva is heads and shoulders above anyone in MMA in mauy tia and fedor has an amazing record fighting a lot of tough opponents. Personally I think if fedor fought silva he would win only because he would take it to the ground, but if silva really improved his take down defense so fedor couldn’t take him down fedor would be in for a bad night and get picked apart. I think its too early to crown gsp or penn as the greats yet, in time one of these guys just might be the top pound4pound in the world only time will tell.

No way, Alves doesnt last 3 rounds with Penn Or Georges. The way he cuts weight is amature and its going to catch up with him, hes an old school BJ Penn attitude trapped in a bigger body.

ok first off it is really funny how much people here sweat gsp. has bj ever gotten really owned before gsp did.. by matt hughes and matt serra, bj did not ok once when he had a broken rib but he still did not quit gsp tap on a arm bar to matt hughes and there is no way that alves is better than bj. bj will be a tougher fight for gsp.

Honestly people are crazy if they think either fighter can only with a luck shot or something. Both are very talented, elite level fighters and this fight could easily go both ways. Penn might have a slight advantage in the hands but Georges does have better kicks and is faster. Penn got the better of Gsp in the first round but couldnt capitalize and finish Gsp (not that he was in trouble). Gsp worked with a game plan after that and was able to get the win. Wrestling, Gsp has a huge advantage but Penns flexibility almost equals it out, again though if Gsp wants to take you down your going down. Gsp won the first fight with his wrestling and I’d expect him to do the same thing in this fight, just with a little more gnp. BJJ obviously goes to Penn, Gsp does have a black belt and could use his wrestling to utilize his bjj on the ground. Cardio goes to Gsp, but Penn has the better chin everything evens out. This is going to be one hell of a fight I cant wait!! Its soo hard to picks whose gonna witn this fight but I gotta go with Gsp in the 4th round with the ref stepping in on a little gnp.

really a good post, and i am agreed just i think for more than gsp want the TKO, IF gsp is winning this, will be by decision.. bj penn is more than ready.. but onot to beat the WW championn
i think thiago alves is a very hard time to gsp and i think thiago can beat bj penn relative easily
by JoW on Jan 1, 2009 7:40 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
A match between BJ and Alves would be very one-sided. Alves wouldn’t mess with the ground at all and there is no way BJ can take him down. The GSP fight will be more even but I see GSP by TKO. I would hate to see BJ with both titles cus I hate his ego and if he does win he’d defend eath title like only once a year. We already have The Ultimate Fighter to drag out title fights.
