Wanderlei Silva video: 'Axe Murderer' wants to return at UFC 100 in July

He seems to be in real good spirits, looking forward to fighting Quinton "Rampage" Jackson for a fourth time (says Rampage should enjoy this win) and more than likely Chuck Liddell again:

WAR WAND

by DustOne on Dec 30, 2008 12:43 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Wandi should drop down to 185 lb. He is a small LHW. He would most likely destroy most if not all MW, and would set up quite a showdown with A. Silva.

by c-war on Dec 30, 2008 5:11 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree. Wandy seems like a great guy, and I will cheer no matter if he wins or loses.

by naturalshadow on Dec 30, 2008 11:30 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

he was pretty cool about it…said it wasnt a lucky punch, was humble in defeat. im wondering if all these ko`s as of late are affecting him??

by texen_1 on Dec 30, 2008 12:47 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

He doesn’t even look like he has been in a fight. This knockout was probably not a big deal to someone who used to train in a camp where getting knocked out had actually occurred during the training.

I hate to wait till UFC 100 to see Wandi compete again but if that is the amount of time that he needs off then so be it. I can’t wait to see who they pit him up against.

by RyanHobbs on Dec 30, 2008 2:52 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Wanderlei is the Man! I knew he wouldnt beat Rampage but sop what? Rampage is the best LHW in the world, nO shame in that loss! He is a class act!

Wanderlei has never lost to a B level fighter. He only loses to top fighters. When 2 top fighters face off someone has to lose. Doesnt mean that he is done.

Imo, he should drop down to middleweight NOW! His saga with Henderson needs closure. I rubber match at 185 lbs should be booked! Wanderlei spent his entire career fighting biggfer and stronger guys. I dont think he could do that successfully anymore, but that doiesnt mean he cant be a TERROR fighting against people his own size. He is a Bisping sized HW, TIME TO MOVE DOWN!!!! Since he only likes to fight at the major events (UFC 100 in July), he has plenty of time to lose weight properly to come in at top form in july at 185 lbs.

Just my 2 cents. What do the maniacs think?

i was hoping after chuck he would drop down…i jsut thought once the chuck fight got him into all the american fans minds…he would drop down and get serious. he is still too hard headed though… him vs dan at 185 after dan loses to franklin should be good.

by josh on Dec 30, 2008 12:33 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed. . I am WAY more interested in a 185lb rubber match with Hendo then a rematch with Chuck.

by haglnuts on Dec 30, 2008 2:10 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

What I dont understand is why chuck would have gotten to fight wandy if he won. Chuck is coming off of a loss so it would make more sense for them to fight now wouldnt it? Is it because of the medical suspension?

by Brett on Dec 30, 2008 2:35 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Wandy only has 1 fight left on his contract! The UFC better give him a BIG Extension. Win or lose, his fights are the best!

by john on Dec 30, 2008 8:52 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Wandy is the best….. but unfortunately I’m a Kinesiologist and once the neurons open up after a knockout like that…. it’s only that much easier to do it again. It’s like trying to wiggle your ears, really hard at first but in due time it becomes second nature. The knockout is the same thing your body goes into defensive mode by shutting down and now that the pathway has learned to do it well it’s real easy to do it again. Just goes to show you how much Chuck has fallen with his knockout abilities.
Wandy go for broke next like the Jardine fight!!!!!!

by Robert(1) on Dec 30, 2008 11:28 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

for some reason I think the reason why he is getting K.O.ed is because he is getting kicked in the head by cro cop which alpways results in a KO unless u are a freak of nature like BIG NOG, or because he got hit by a haymaker from Hendo, or because he got hit by a hook from Rampage. all of which is enough to KO anyone.

by Wanderlei Fan on Dec 30, 2008 12:04 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I’m curious about the whole “only so many times you can be out cold” thing that Rogan was talking about. It would be interesting to hear from a nuerologist or read some medical studies. A a dead Wandy would be no good for anyone. I think middle weight is calling.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Dec 30, 2008 12:57 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Yeah it is a very valid point Rogan made … we are not designed to take shots to the head, so once you have 1000’s of shots, many knock outs, it’s not going to take much the next time, and the time after that, etc

I really hope Wanderlei comes back stronger than ever.

by DownUnder on Dec 30, 2008 1:16 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I get what you guys are saying but the stress a boxer takes from punches is much more than an mma fighter. Remember that the head is designed so that if any or the pressure points are hit hard it knocks you out. This is a safety measure that the body has. Boxing gloves were designed so that boxers did not get knocked out so that fights would last longer and fights would be more exciting. This is not natural, getting knocked out is narural.

I’ve been knocked out cold 6-7 times (playing rugby mainly) but have received flash knockouts dozens of times and doctors have explained that this is natural and that their would be no lasting effects.

I think the only lasting effects after being knocked out are mental ones.

by MoonUK on Dec 30, 2008 5:54 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I’ve had the flash knockouts as well in my fightng days, but never out cold. I’m curious if that constitutes something different. I absolutely agree about boxing doing more damage over the long run and I always preach that case to non-MMA people, but does getting knocked out cold several times make you more likely to go out cold or worse in the future? I don’t know.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Dec 30, 2008 10:35 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The problem they are worrying about is how many concussions you get. A lot of the time you get a cold knock-out, like loss of consciousness for more than a split second. Once you get a concussion it is easier to get them the next time.

This happens a lot with NFL quarterbacks. Some of them get too many concussions and have to quit playing….I’m thinking that it happened to Troy Aikman.

Let’s say Wandy got a concussion (which I’m sure he did since he was out so long) in that fight. Let’s say there is a strength ratio to getting hit and his threshhold for getting a concussion/knockout was 100. Now after this fight, it might be down to 90. The next time he fights a punch that previously he could’ve taken would now put him out and possibly give him another concussion.

Concussions are a brains way of trying to protect itself when it gets injured seriously. It is way different than just getting hit a lot like in boxing.

by joseph.67 on Dec 30, 2008 11:13 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

A concussion is a bruise on the brain. I got one jumping off the school bus in Junior High. I could only speak jibberish for hours. After that, I would get migrane headaches maybe once a year where my speech was affected. Residual brain damage is a scary thing. Anyway, at MW I think Wandy will deliver more concussions that he receives so I hope someone can convince him to do that.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on Dec 30, 2008 11:50 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Guys I’ve had a read up on the internet and like I was told by the docs there are no lasting side effects of being knocked out (fully or flash).

However there is a theory (although not proven) that every time you get knocked out the effects are slightly worse (ie. out cold longer).

by MoonUK on Dec 30, 2008 2:21 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I was upset when i observed the outcome of this fight. I was totally pulling for wanderlei but hey he got caught with a clean punch, and I like that he stated that it wasn’t luck and that Rampage was not just lucky but his technical punching won it. I respect Page for his skill even though I’m not happy with the outcome of the fight, and also respect wanderlie’s response i think it is quite classy.

by JoW on Dec 30, 2008 2:36 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Good question. I would like to see him fight Thiago Silva…or maybe a rematch with Dan Henderson. The rematch could either be at middleweight or lightheavyweight. I kind of want to see Wandi fight at light heavy still. People talk about the reach advantage being an issue, but I don’t think there was much of a difference in the reach between Rampage and Wandi. Rampage was maybe 2 inches more if I recall correctly. It could have been visa versa. Either way, the reach advantage issue isn’t a valid arguement when the top of the middleweight division is a long limbed accurate striker in Anderson Silva and the top of the lightheavyweight division is a condensed-built Rashad Evans.

by RyanHobbs on Dec 30, 2008 3:02 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Wanderlai is awesome, I liked when he said it wasn’t luck that he got KO and gave credit to Rampage, I do take what Rogan said seriousely, that KO was crazy, I mean some crazy KO’s I’ve seen started with Gonzaga over Cro Cop then that KO by wanderlai over jardine and Rashad over liddell holy crap, and that Fight Night for the troops, we may very well see a death in the octagon one day, and I hope that never happens, but lately I have seen some crazy stuff, I hope wanderlai is Okay and comes back really strong

Wandy is a true class act. He is a perfect representation of an MMA fighter. Axe Murderer in the cage and ring but classy guy outside. Even though I like Rampage more its always exciting to see Silva guy fight. He is all about putting on a good show for the fans. As a fan how can you not like this guy?

Interesting match-ups that make sense

HOUSTON ALEXANDER
Houston has the popularity. They both like to brawl. Definitely marketable. Reasons why I don’t see it happening is because Houston is not even close to Silva in the rankings. If he wins could discredit Silva’s status but this is MMA anything can happen. Never say never Brock Lesnar got a title shot after only 2 fights in the UFC which is BS because he lost to MIR.

MATT HAMILL
Marketable. Both are stalky and great fighters. Wrestler vs Striker. I don’t want to see either lose.

BRANDON VERA
Somewhat marketable. Vera used to be a top ranked guy. Both are stand up Muay thai fighters. I think this would be pretty exciting match.

by skelow on Dec 30, 2008 5:03 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Correct me if im wrong, But I think Wanderleii needs to get him self a real boxing coach, He needs to change his style in fighting, To be able to win over Jackson again.

His style hasent changed since he started to fight, So thats why im saying that he maybe should anyone agrees ?

by Il Nino on Dec 30, 2008 6:14 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I agree that he should work on his striking. I am assuming that he has been working on his wrestling and ground game with Xtreme Couture but a new boxing coach could be what Wandi needs. He needs to protect his chin.

by RyanHobbs on Dec 30, 2008 6:32 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I look at it this way Wanderlei was doing great up until Rampage hit him with that beatiful counter punch. Im a Wanderlei fanatic, but he got caught. Look at it this way Wanderlei still has two wins over Rampage’s one win. Wand will come back strong and I hope he goes back to chute boxe. It was war wand before the fight and its still WAR WAND!

by XxShogunXx on Dec 30, 2008 8:53 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I think Wandy was doing good as well, stuff the takedown attempted and was able to pull his leg out once or twice when Rampage got a hold of it. I was getting more excited as the fight went on because I thought that a takedown was Rampage’s best bet. He was winning most of the exchanges and was looking real good. He got caught and it can and does happen. I can’t wait to see his next fight. I’ve been saying for quite a while that he should be at MW I’m kind of nervous now with Anderson Silva having such KO power.

On behalf of all your fans Wanderlei, I would like to say thank you for all the wonderful memories and great fights you’ve been in. Whether it was stomping out Yuki Kondo, beating the utter crap out of Sakuraba thrice, or striking with Liddell, you always put on a great show for the fans. You will go down as one of the all-time greats of MMA. Through your lifestyle and fighting career, you have truly suffered for your fans’ sake, and I want to let you know its appreciated tremendously.

So, for the good of your health and your legacy, please retire. You are 1-4 in your last five fights against top competition, and three of those losses have come by brutal KO. Your body cannot keep up with your desire any more. I would hate to see you turn out like Muhammed Ali. You don’t owe the fans anything, nor do you have anything left to prove.

Rampage is a beast in this point of their careers Wand can’t hang with page no more. But I agree Wand needs to make one big fight in this point in his career. Or if he does well 1-2 more. He’s 1-4 against top competition and lost 3 of them by terrible knockouts. I want to see him against Henderson again and maybe Chuck. But that’s it. His career is coming to an end. His iron chin is fading away and he’s a total shell of his former self. His mind is there but his body and fighting skills are deteriating.

I think as well 185 would suit him better. But I really think he needs to get the coaching of Freddy if he can to teach him how to technically box. I know his fight style is all about explosiveness, which is fine when fighting in other organisations. Even though if Pride was around today and still put on fights like they did I would have to admit I’d be more excited to watch a Pride event than an UFC. With that said and done I do believe this that the UFC have better technical boxers now than Pride did. Jackson was taken on by Juniato after his losses in Pride and he turned him around and gave him the boxing skills that he has. Wand still has the same wild punches, if he could get more technical and use all that power that he has I don’t believe too many would stand and trade with him. Just my Euro cent

No expert, but had a feeling this was going to happen, I love Wand, the only pay per views I buy is when he is on the card, but he came out, all smiles, relaxed, the stare down wasn’t one of his classics, and his head was high up, it usually is tucked into his shoulders, and he looks mean and angry, ready to destroy. He just didn’t look line Wand that night.

I want to see him fight as a big fan, but don’t want to see him turn into Tommy Hearns either, speaking with marbles in his mouth.
